“Coordinating a Community Response to the Opioid Epidemic” was presented on June 18, 2019; by Molly Welch Marahar, MPP; WHI Opioid Project Coordinator, Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation; and Carrie Rheingans, MSW, MPH; WHI Project Manager, Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation, and a panel including Marci Scalera, ACSW, LMSW, CAADC, Director of Clinical & SUD Services, Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan; Matt Hill, Program Manager, Washtenaw Recovery Advocacy Project, Home of New Vision; and Dr. John Hopper, MD, Addiction Medicine Specialist, St. Joseph Mercy Medical Group. Opioid overdose was described as an “epidemic” by CDC Director Thomas Frieden in 2011. Since then, this epidemic has had a catastrophic impact on families and placed tremendous strain on communities, and our Southeast Michigan community is no exception. What is being done to change this? The WHI Opioid Project is a cross sector coalition that was formed to address the opioid crisis in Washtenaw County. The Opioid Project has members from the health systems, local substance use agencies, government, schools, law enforcement, academia and the recovering community who come together to collectively design and implement policy changes to stem the tide of opioid overdose. From Red Barrel Events, to Naloxone trainings, to prevention education in schools, the Opioid Project is the touchpoint for initiatives at all levels of public health intervention, from prevention to treatment to harm reduction to policy advocacy. This program will discuss coordinating a community-level response to the opioid epidemic from a public health perspective, and ways for all to get involved. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues. John worked in the construction industry during college and after college until he became a project manager with a large construction company. John worked his way up to be the head person in charge after the owners of the company, and was on track to be an owner himself because 2 of the owners were planning to sell out. John was putting his heart and soul into this company on the impression that one day he would be an owner and building a legacy for the future of the company. To his surprise the company was sold without his knowledge and he was not given the opportunity. John immediately went to work for a competitor and found the grass on the other side was not as green or as profitable. According to John, the company didn’t know how to make money. Frustrated, John decided he was going to start his own construction company and was doing well for a start up business with no customers, but things got even better as his previous boss from the company that was sold needed his help. Through that, John’s first year in business ,after starting Hopper Construction Company in 1999, he was able to contract six million dollars in construction jobs. In this episode of Business Playmakers John tells in detail the ins and outs of the construction industry, and gives a perspective that is rarely told. John has also started an employee coaching and retention business called The Greatest on the Planet, where he trains employers to have unifiable employees. John Hopper Show Notes John Hopper created the system The Greatest on the Planet to change the lives of millions of people. Two years ago he turned his proven system into an effective workbook that changes the dynamic between employees and their employers. For over 200 years the basic dynamic between employer and employee has not changed. Way back in the 1700’s when someone was hired to come work on the farm is was “do as I tell you and I’ll pay you for it”. That is the same basis we’re working on still today and it no longer works. John is a motivating speaker, and a highly sought after for his expertise on “the 6 key points to having irreplaceable employees”, limiting beliefs, money, and human behavior. Most passionate about Way back in 1992, almost 20 years ago, I was working for a large construction company. I was very high in the company, even thought I was very young; I grew up through that company very quickly. I became the first person outside of the owners in order of rank. There were four owners of the company, and then me, and everybody else was behind us. So, I was fighting to become an owner of that company. Right out from underneath me – and I was working on a really big project at the time – they sold the company! Well, I didn’t own it, so I didn’t get any ownership in the sale. So, I was very upset. They basically sold to an investment banker from New York City. I didn’t want anything to do with it. I wanted to own my own business one day; I didn’t want to be the top guy in a New York investment firms construction company. So, I quit. When I quit, my employer tried to convince me to go out and start my own business. I said, “Well, I’m not really ready for that. I’m too young.” You tell yourself all these excuses as to why you can’t do it. So, I go to work for another construction company and then I realized that it’s awful, just horrible. I was used to being spoiled where I’m at, I was the number 5 guy in the company! So, then I was forced to go start my own business. At 27 years old, I decided to take the plunge. I started in September of 1999. From September until the end of December, I sat at my kitchen table, got on the phone, called every single person I could possibly think of and I sold $6 million worth of work in four months. I was selling my construction services to help you build a building. John’s best advice about approaching customers If it’s just a one person show, without any employees; they need to be customer focused. If they have employees though, they need to worry about the employees. Let the employees focus on your customers. If you are focused on the customer and the employee is focused on the customer, then who is focused on he employee? Nobody! And they are the most important part of the company. So, the only thing I want you to worry about are your employees. Wake up every single day and worry about what else you can do for your employees, the same way you would if you were worried about a customer. Biggest failure with a customer I was focused on the customer, not on the employee. And because of that, I lost hundreds of employees. I wasn’t paying attention to them; I was paying attention to the customers. Biggest success due to the right customer approach In my own company, my life changed. As an example: getting materials to a job site. Oftentimes, that would become my responsibility because nobody else was available to do it. So I’d have to call and say, “We need a800 studs, 300 sheets of drywall, whatever it may be.” A foreman would call me on the job site and say, “We’re gonna run out of materials, so I need more.” After implementing this (focusing on my employees), I never have to make that call ever again. That call gets made for me, because they’re following things up, because they’re team players. But the biggest win out of it isn’t what I did for my own company; it’s what I can do for other

In this episode I talk with John Hopper, the Chief Development Officer and Director of Public Affairs for New Orleans City Park. We dive into the history of one of the largest urban parks in the United States. City Park in New Orleans was first envisioned as a public place in the mid-1800s, but as you'll learn, the land was first inhabited by Native Americans who found the land along Bayou Metairie suitable for their lifestyle. It was later the site of the Allard Plantation before being purchased by John McDonogh for the purpose of giving it to the city to be used as a park. John and I discuss the history of the park from its very beginning through present day. Along the way, you'll hear stories of duels, grand architecture, the Works Progress Administration, a Mexican sculptor with ties to Pancho Villa, and more! Green used to be just a color. Now it's a way of life. Everything from household trash to billion dollar industrial plants can be green meaning we undertake an activity mindful of the impact we're having on our environment. We use the word green because it's the most ubiquitous color in nature. In cities we've coined a term for urban nature Green Space. In New Orleans we have one of the oldest and biggest green spaces in the country. It's home to an 800 year old oak tree. A carousel. A sculpture garden. A farm. Festival grounds. And much more. You'd think we'd come up with a grander name for such a grand domain but we simply call it, City Park. John Hopper, Chief Development Officer and Public Affairs Director of City Park, joins Peter on today s Out to Lunch. One of the earliest elements of the green movement was recycling. Which is typically plastic, paper and glass. In New Orleans we also recycle houses. And paint. At The Green Project you can get paint that was otherwise headed for the dump, and almost any piece of building material, salvaged from demolished or renovated houses. The Director of Development at the Green Project, Christal White, is Peter s guest on Out to Lunch. In the You Heard It Here First segment of the show, Greg Harris introduces his entrepreneurial concept for resurrecting the spirit of community with a dash of commerce, MEUSU. You can hear a longer conversation about MEUSU here. The photos on this page were taken at Commander s Palace by Chet Overall. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
