It's a Thursday edition of Glenn Clark Radio and we have a great one for you. The legendary DJ Kool joins us to kick things off at 10:15 ahead of his CIAA Tournament Party tomorrow at Ram's Head Live. At 11, Towson basketball star Nicolas Timberlake will join us to talk about Towson's win and hot streak, and at 11:20 Kevin Goldstein from Fan Graphs joins the show to talk about their Orioles prospect rankings. In the final hour, Ramie Makhlouf was joined by Ricky O'Donnell of SB Nation to discuss the first-place Bulls as they've hit the All-Star break and whether star forward DeMar DeRozen deserves more respect in the MVP race. Later, Makhlouf listened back to FanGraphs writer Kevin Golstein's interview from earlier in the day on the Parkins & Spiegel Show in which he discussed the MLB lockout.
In the second hour, Danny Parkins and Matt Spiegel were joined by FanGraphs writer Kevin Goldstein, who has been in both the media and in MLB front offices. He let us know if we should, in fact, be panicking about the MLB lockout. Then, what's the worst advice your significant other gives when you're just not feeling your best? Danny's wife thinks water solves everything, and Spiegs' just tells him to go to bed. Also, Wanny isn't going to be on with us today because he's … doing something.
Liz Roscher of Yahoo! Sports and Kevin Goldstein of Fangraphs defied the MLB lockout to join us for The Rookie, an above-average baseball movie about Jim Morris's midlife journey to the majors that is therefore below average generally. How's Dennis Quaid's pitching form? How's his dad-cap form? Is the fictional Jim Morris a solid DILF but a bad high-school coach? Why didn't the nuns in the (interminable) first act go off in the third? And does the movie make the lede in the obit, or get crowded out by classics like Jaws 3D? Editing actors to look like athletes, a suicide-squeeze play only one panelist noticed ('cause she has to), and yet another guest who's "more of a Randy Quaid guy": it's an all-new Quaid In Full. With the imminent expiration of Major League Baseball's Collective Bargaining Agreement, Alex and Bobby are taking some time to break down key concepts that will be on the table in the coming weeks and months and examine what's at stake for each side. This week, they look at salary arbitration, tracing its roots back to the end of the reserve clause and outlining its occasionally-squishy boundaries. They talk with former reliever Jerry Blevins about his personal experience with the arbitration process and how players navigate the system. They also bring on Kevin Goldstein, current FanGraphs writer and former Houston Astros executive, to demystify the financial approach that organizations take to arbitration and the role that player evaluation has in it. Consider Kevin our palate cleanser, coming in to lay down some home truths concerning our nomination process. It's a fun conversation that you'll not want to miss.

Some strange Mike Elias discourse popped up on Twitter last night thanks to former Deadspin editor Tom Scocca. We discussed it at length to start today's show. Is there a relevant gripe? Is he blaming Elias for things that aren't Elias' fault? We discussed all of that. Zack Goodman is just 20 years old-he sat in for Kyle again today. Late in Hour 1, we brought back "How old ARE you?" How on top of things is Glenn that young people care about? We revisited it late in Hour 2 with "How YOUNG are you?," going the opposite direction. At the top of Hour 2, Fangraphs' Kevin Goldstein (former Astros scouting director) joined us for this week's MLB Draft segment, discussing what the Orioles might do at 5, the Elias chatter and John Means/Trey Mancini's future.

How have the White Sox managed Michael Kopech during a season with limitations? Kevin answers all that and more on this episode.

The conversation goes on to give an insight into Major League Baseball trades in practice, the relationship between opposing front offices and a view on what the Astros were looking for in players they were interested in. Following this, we discuss where the future of analytics in baseball lies, before moving on to an open and frank look at the Astros under the Jeff Luhnow regime and how the public fallout from the 2017 sign stealing scandal unfairly absorbed undeserving individuals, namely including Goldstein himself in connection to an email he had sent at the time. Plus, find out who has won the 'Astros: Generations' competition for the three Astros caps with the last three club logos!

Cutternation Podcast #49 - Matt Antonelli Antonelli was originally drafted as a third baseman by the San Diego Padres with the 17th pick of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. In July 2007, Antonelli was named the best second base prospect in the minors by Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. In November 2007, Antonelli was ranked as the #1 second base prospect and #27 prospect overall in baseball, on a list polling 20 members of the scouting community and compiled by Jonathan Mayo of minorleaguebaseball.com Antonelli with the Padres in Spring training 2008 Before the 2007 season, Antonelli was not considered to have much power potential after having zero home runs in over 200 professional at bats in 2006. However, he hit 14 home runs in 82 games for High A Lake Elsinore, before moving up to Double A San Antonio Missions to finish the season. In 534 at-bats between the two levels, Antonelli finished with a slash line of .304/.404/.491 with 21 homers and 25 stolen bases along with a 94/83 K/BB ratio. He won the Texas League Championship with the Missions in 2007. In 2008, Antonelli played for the Padres' AAA farm club, the Portland Beavers. He struggled at the plate most of the year, hitting just .215, but kept his good eye and ended up with 76 walks. In August he found some success, hitting .290 for the month, with 4 home runs and a .393 OBP. Antonelli was called up to the Padres on September 1, 2008, where he promptly laced a single off Greg Maddux of the Dodgers for his first hit in the major leagues. He then went hitless in his next 20 at bats, but then got 7 hits in his next 13 at-bats with 3 walks, including his first home run, on September 15, off of Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh. He was unable to earn another big league promotion with the club and granted free agency at the end of the 2010 season. . Ben and Sam talk to Kevin Goldstein about the amateur draft, his scouting assignments, the Astros’ system, and more.
Ben and Sam talk to Kevin Goldstein about his life after leaving Baseball Prospectus to work for the Houston Astros, what he’s working on, and what he’s learned about how baseball teams work. Also, what he’s drinking.
Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus recently released his top ten prospects report for the Royals minor league system and was kind enough to talk with the Kansas City Baseball Vault about the rankings, the Royals development process and the level of talent in the Royals system. He also offered his opinion on the potential of a Wil Myers-for-James Shields trade, and the philosophy behind trading prospects in general. Parks offered a long-term look at each of his top ten prospects, including telling us about the two names he felt like he could have placed higher. Parks sees a lot of the Royals players as his initial work in baseball writing was in regards to the Rangers system, a team which shares a spring training complex with the Royals. He also weighed in on the Royals training methods, management, David Glass and gave an update on life at BP after Kevin Goldstein.
Last week The Royalman Report Ended, then the KC Baseball Vault ended on 1510, then we changed how we record things and reinvented the KCBBV Podcast. This week the new Vault of Jeff Herr, Mike Engel and Troy Olsen took to google hangouts and talked about the great August the Royals had, how much different the new additions have made and how much the removed players took away from this team. Then they talked about Kevin Goldstein going to the Astros and Kent Babb to the Washington Post and wished well to both of them. Then the KCBBV switched to the EKOH Sports Report. Jeff and Troy talked about the Chiefs preseason and what it means for the regular season before switching to Mizzou, KU, KState and Nebraska Football talk. We are looking for a studio or someone to host our studio. If this is you or someone you know, please email RoyalmanReport@Gmail.com
This week on the Kansas City Baseball Vault, we jumped right into the future of Royals baseball, welcoming Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus and ESPN.com and discussing Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi and their potential to reach the big leagues this year, Eric Hosmer's slumps, Mike Montgomery's trouble, Mike Moustakas's success and a few other prospects down the pipe. Goldstein and the Baseball Prospectus crew will be in Kansas City July 8 for an All-Star Weekend conference at the Negro League Baseball Museum where the KC Baseball Vault team will be co-panelists. We also talked with former Kansas City Athletic Joe Rudi. The three time All Star and Gold Glove winner talked about coming up through the minors, dealing with Charlie Finley, and world championships. Jeff Logan discussed upcoming events from the Kansas City Baseball Historical Society, including the monthly meeting this May 24 at the Westport Flea Market and the upcoming Kansas City A's reunion on June 8. We also gave away Kansas City T-Bones tickets to three lucky callers in our weekly trivia contest. We'll be back next week with more discussion of Kansas City baseball, past, present and future on ESPN 1510 Thursday at 6 p.m. CST.
We were out last week while we prepared for the debut of the Kansas City Baseball Vault but came back with plenty to talk about, including Danny Duffy's injury and his potential replacements in the rotation. We all figure he'll see DL time (and at time of the episode's upload no announcement had been made by the team), and we discussed the Royals injury problems this year and how it impacts the rest of the year. The team's been playing better, though, so we brought up the possibility of a resurgence. Much of the episode focused on two different trips to Northwest Arkansas to see the Naturals. Troy saw them a few weeks ago and Fake Ned went down for the weekend and, wouldn't you know it, ran into controversy. You may have seen the video on Youtube of Springfield Cardinals manager Mike Shildt getting ejected and tossing his helmet in frustration. It hit an umpire, though it was deemed inadvertent. He gave his side in an apologetic interview. There's also an interview with Naturals GM Eric Edelstein that includes an interesting tale about the Glass family. We announced our guests for Thursday's KC Baseball Vault - "Doc" Edwards, formerly of the Kansas City A's and Baseball Prospectus and ESPN writer and podcaster Kevin Goldstein. The Kansas City Baseball Vault will be on ESPN 1510 AM and 1510.com Thursday evening from 6-7 central time.
