Deena Pierott from iUrban Teen joins us on the PDX Black Rose Podcast for great conversation about Promoting science and technology in the Black Community. Deena Pierott is committed to her family and her community. In her own words, it’s “ family and community over everything.” But you don’t have to take her word for it, you just have to look at her track record. The founder of International Black Women's Collaborative, Black Women in Stem 2.0, Mosaic Blueprint and I Urban Teen; all organizations that serve to connect people to opportunities, Pierott has learned that building relationships is the foundation to building something that lasts. That mentality of being a builder and an advocate led Pierott to the White House in 2013 where she was honored as a Champion of Change. Always a student of entrepreneurship, Pierott learned from that experience that she needed a team, in particular a publicist to let people know what was going on. These experiences of triumphs mixed with stumbling blocks have taught her how to pivot as an entrepreneur on the grind. And pivoting is exactly what she’s doing now in these changing times. Although she is still on the grind, Pierott is learning to slow down, be present and “ meditate on what can we do differently, and what can we leave behind and not take with us after this [pandemic]?” There are so many wisdoms that Pierott has to share, it’s best just to listen in. Amir Morgan from Aesthete Society joins us on the PDX Black Rose Podcast for great conversation about being creative in Portland. Amir Morgan has an inventive spirit. Growing up playing baseball and basketball, Morgan always knew he wanted to work with fashion. But going to school and studying bioengineering, his plans changed from fashion to practicing medicine. It wasn’t necessarily Morgan’s idea to study medicine. His parents just wanted a secure job for him, but eventually Morgan had to listen to the voice within that said “it’s more important to have passion for a job” than job security alone. Following that passion, Morgan began to study textiles at North Carolina State University, eventually ending up at Nike in apparel innovation, and menswear among other divisions. But that’s all he’s done. Working with fellow colleagues and friends, Morgan has collaborated with Weiden and Kennedy, Portland Art Museum and others to bring together diverse audiences around fashion, technology and art for experiential events. Lisa Alexander joins us on the PDX Black Rose Podcast for great conversation about traveling and branching out of your comfort zone. Lisa Alexander has an enthusiasm for people. There is an openness and an encouraging spirit that accompanies her tone. You could say this is a part of what led her to hospitality and Human Resources. The other part...she isn’t afraid of adventure and trying new things. Originally from Portland, Alexander ventured across the country to attend Howard University where she studied hospitality and jumped at the chance to study language in Japan. In Japan, Alexander says her learning increased significantly, as she was made to feel right at home by her host mother. Upon returning to school, Alexander was offered a job on the spot from Disney at a recruiting event where she would go on to manage the German Pavilion of restaurants at Disney in Florida. Alexander says that her time in Japan as well as her love of languages was a big part of being chosen for the position. But even more so, Alexander attributes her parents with exposing her and her siblings to so many opportunities growing up. Pamela Madsen joins me on this episode about the importance of finding your YES. Pamela explains the conditioning women undergo, which rewards them for saying no and ignoring their desires. By 50, Pamela had tried over 300 diets and is therefore very familiar with this topic, having had first-hand experience. Pamela is the founder and CEO of Back to the Body: Sensuous Retreats for Women, providing women with permission to find pleasure. Retreats are held in exotic locations all over the world, allowing participants to immerse with a powerful sisterhood and a safe and supportive staff. Pamela has been an activist for women for over 30 years and was the Founder and first Executive Director of The American Fertility Association where she worked for reproductive freedom for all women. She has appeared in over 3000 media outlets including Oprah, CNN, NY Times, The Huffington Post and countless others. Tune in for an eye-opening episode! What about No? Pamela evaluates this with a few key questions. While consent can be a bit of a gray area, it's important to address. Understanding the root of your No's are crucial to know what you want and therefore shape what we ultimately say yes or no to. Pamela asks us to dig a little deeper and understand if our No's are established in fear. That will ultimately guide us. She points out that women are regularly expected to put themselves last and this spills into the bedroom. Say Yes Feeling safe in your own body plays a big part in saying yes. Pamela shares that this can be a direct impact of your physical environment, which then manifests in your decision making and your inner feelings. Once we are in a safe and supportive environment, she believes we are able to take what we truly want and “claim all of ourselves.” Know Yourself We hear more about how vital it is to actually know ourselves in order to unlock our true yes's and no's. Pamela tells us about her retreats and the amazing results it has produced for women and men. Becoming unshackled from the expectations and conformity of society brings a sense of enlightenment that allows women to finally lose their fear of shame and put themselves and their desires first! This bleeds into our sex lives, our relationships with other women and our relationships with ourselves. Pamela's retreats attract cross-generational women. She has found that women leave knowing their boundaries and taking strides in their relationships, as well as in their careers. Healing through touch Pamela explores a different aspect of touch that she uses at her retreats. We learn how healing touch can actually be and that it can be transferred into our lives. With a special focus on somatic touch, Pamela highlights how significant external touch can be in our relationships and in our healing process. ADOPTION NOW - Telling Your Adoption Story
Out of a South Korean Orphanage: Glenn Morey's Story About Finding His Voice and Creating a Documentary [S5E4]

ADOPTION NOW - Telling Your Adoption Story

Glenn Morey has worked in film since 1981—as a writer, creative director, and a commercial and documentary filmmaker for many years. His documentary “Side by Side” is an Official Selection of the San Diego Asian Film Festival (organized by Pacific Arts Movement), and the Boston Asian American Film Festival, among many other awards. Key Links Website: sidebysideproject.com FB: facebook.com/SidebySideDocumentary/ Twitter: @sidebysideproj Glenn's personal story, as an inter-country adoptee from South Korea, was the initial motivating and creative force behind "Side by Side.” And in this interview, he delves into his own experience to build upon many common elements of the South Korean adoption experience. What follows in this podcast is a really interesting and layered talk on the complexity of the adoption experience for many South Koreans, and how giving them a platform to find their voice is so essential. Below are some (but not all!) of the most compelling aspects of the talk, ranging from Glenn’s realization that he had operated under a supplied narrative about his own racial identity, to the importance of communicating and being honest with your adopted children about the complete picture of their ethnic identity. [#1 Some Details on Glenn’s Adoption from Seoul] Glenn retells the details of how he came to be claimed from city hall in Seoul, later placed in an orphanage, and then how he found himself on a plane with 81 other babies to the U.S. This whole experience would eventually become the catalyst for “Side by Side” and would lead him to find how fortunate he had been to become adopted and have such a relatively positive experience. He was adopted by a loving family who lived in Littleton, Colorado. He joined 3 biological daughters, was the first of four adopted children in the family, and had multiple siblings. [#2 Important Conversations About Race] Because of Glenn’s experience with not having the proper amount of racial mirroring and acknowledgment during his upbringing, he didn’t fully understand from a sociological and psychological perspective that he was Asian until he was in his middle age. He understood it intellectually, just not culturally. So when considering transracial adoptees, he wants to stress the importance of having open, honest acknowledgments about race and what is apparent to the child. Don’t suppress it and don’t shut out their culture for your own. Glenn reminds us that a good rule of thumb when having conversations about race with your child is that if you’re afraid to have the conversation, you should consider having it anyways, despite the discomfort you feel because it really is that important! Glenn talks about how there was zero acknowledgement in his own story and he subsequently built up an identity that didn’t include the most essential aspects of his story. [#3 Film and Interview as a Platform for the Voiceless] After he worked through the counter-narratives of his adoptive experience in the U.S., he began to understand that his story was actually a cliche when compared with other Korean American adoptees. There was immense power in having that reinforcement of other South-Korean adoptees who had the same experience in America. And through interviews and what would lay the groundwork for the “Side by Side” project, Glenn gave a platform for those who hadn’t shared their story virtually anyone else before. He helped them find their voice. [#4 The Traditional Narrative of Adoption for Glenn] During the interview, he talks about some of the reasons for adoptees not telling their story. The most prominent one being that adoptive parents were told that assimilation into the culture had to be seamless--this generally meant that ignoring the culture of the adopted child was seen as the best way to achieve this assimilation. And because the standard narrative of adoption was often: “You are extremely lucky to have escaped poverty and abject conditions.” Most adoptees Glenn interviewed didn’t feel comfortable subverting this traditional narrative. They felt reluctant to go against that sentiment of how fortunate they were.
