Dr. David Jockers author of Supercharge Your Brain as well as the creator of the Cancer Cleanse program. Today we talked about the dreaded "C" word, cancer. It seems like we all have been touched by cancer in some way. The latest stats I checked showed 21 thousand people around the world die each day from cancer. One out of every two men get will get a diagnosis and one out of every three women will get a diagnosis of cancer. These numbers are absolutely huge. That means every man women and child on earth will be directly or indirectly affected by cancer. After president Nixon declared The War On Cancer back in 1971, nothing has changed. When you declare war on something, be ready for a fight. And we've been fighting ever since to no avail. We need to understand that cancer is a teacher and we need to work with it and re-educate cancer stem cells so that they can do their job and kindly exit the body. This whole idea of fighting and killing only makes matters worse. Our language has been militarized and because of this we fight and oppose everything. In this episode Dr. David Jockers shares his own journey with what he believed was some kind of possible skin cancer that he got rid of by applying the principles he's laid out in The Cancer Detox Program. We talked in depth about exactly what he did on an emotional level, spiritual level and a physical level to successfully overcome what he thought was skin cancer. We talked about sugar and how to avoid eating too much sweets that feed cancer cells. We discussed grounding and getting fresh air and sunlight to help the body become healthier and many other cleansing and detox protocols that help the body build its immune system so it can allow cancer to do its job, then exit the body. As most of you know I got into this whole world of alternative health and natural healing because of my own mom's cancer back in 1995. This was an eye opening thing for me to witness how chemotherapy has affected her. I thank God every day she's still with us and actually thriving. Do I know that she would have lived this long (given a less than 10% chance of survival) doing something like the Gerson therapy instead of chemotherapy and radiation? I want to say yes but the reality is, because I can't clone people, I just don't know. It appears as though chemotherapy, radiation and her bone marrow transplant might have saved her. I know it's shocking for a truly alternative health guy to admit that isn't it? But chemotherapy does kill cancer cells, it just kills everything else also. Regardless she's alive and I am grateful. But let this be a lesson, how about we take care of ourselves so that we never get a diagnosis? This takes true personal responsibility to the next level. Are we willing to fully take charge of our health and our lives? I believe it's our birthright and our destiny. Thank you all for supporting us by making all of your purchases via our Amazon link as well as those of you who donate to us we cannot thank you enough. And I thank you all for shopping in our store. Supercharge Your Brain: How to Maintain a Healthy Brain Throughout Your Life by James Goodwin 'A remarkable book, which turns cutting-edge science into simple strategies for a healthier life that all of us should use.' - Phillip Polakoff ----------------------------------------------- The definitive guide to keeping your brain healthy for a long and lucid life, by one of the world's leading scientists in the field of brain health and ageing. The brain is our most vital and complex organ. It controls and coordinates our actions, thoughts and interactions with the world around us. It is the source of personality, of our sense of self, and it shapes every aspect of our human experience. Yet most of us know precious little about how our brains actually work, or what we can do to optimise their performance. Whilst cognitive decline is the biggest long-term health worry for many of us, practical knowledge of how to look after our brain is thin on the ground. In this ground-breaking new book, leading expert Professor James Goodwin explains how simple strategies concerning exercise, diet, social life and sleep can transform your brain health paradigm, and shows how you can keep your brain youthful and stay sharp across your life. Combining the latest scientific research with insightful storytelling and practical advice, Supercharge Your Brain reveals everything you need to know about how your brain functions, and what you can do to keep it in peak condition.

He has developed six revolutionary online programs with thousands of participants. These programs include E-guides, recipe guides, meal plans and video instructions including “The Sugar Detox,” “The Cancer Cleanse,” “Navigating the Ketogenic Diet,” and “The Digestive Health Restoration Program,” and “The AutoImmune Elimination Program” and the “Super Brain Program.” Dr. Jockers is a sought after speaker around the country on such topics as weight loss, brain health, functional exercise, natural detoxification, and disease prevention. Dr. Jockers sees patients at his clinic, Exodus Health Center, to help customize specific lifestyle plans to help individuals improve performance and beat chronic disease. In this episode, Dr. Jockers opens the show by describing the inspiration behind his latest book, The Fasting Transformation. Next, Dr. Jockers reveals his favorite fasting facts. For instance, fasting is part of many religions and has been around since humans have existed. Dr. Jockers dives deep into fasting and explains how fasting will help you lose weight, the benefits of autophagy, and why you may want to switch from cow dairy to sheep or goat dairy. Plus, we speak about the importance of fasting for our digestive systems. / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off Text me the words KKP +1 (786) 364-5002 90 Detox Program with Ben Azadi, Dr Daniel Pompa, Dr Mindy Pelz: http://www.ketokampdetox.com [01:00] About The Fasting Transformation Jockers wanted to write a book about the transformational power of fasting. Sadly, our society is metabolically damaged, causing us to be sick, exhausted, and overweight. Luckily, fasting is the most ancient, inexpensive, and most powerful healing strategy known to humankind. There are key strategies you need to know when it comes to fasting. People need to be aware of everything when it comes to fasting in order to have success. Every person on the planet should be fasting (unless you’re pregnant, a young child, or an elite athlete). Fasting once a week will reduce metabolic disease massively. [02:25] Favorite Fasting Facts Fasting is part of many religions. Spiritual people will practice fasting when they have challenges or when they have significant decisions that they need to make. Also, fasting is some of the best medicine. Throughout history, people have done fasting to hear from God, have greater levels of creativity, and achieve a higher level mentally. Fasting isn’t a fad; it has been around since humans have existed. [04:35] Will Fasting Help You Lose Weight? When you fast, your insulin goes down. When insulin is high, it tells all the other hormones to stop burning fat. That way, your body can focus on burning sugar. Plus, your body will increase inflammation. Throughout history, systemic infections have killed more people than anything else. So, the body created an inflammatory process to protect us against systemic infections. Overall, the body creates inflammation in case your body needs to protect itself. To burn fat, we need periods of time where insulin is really low. The best way to do that is not to eat at all. If we want more advanced weight loss, we may take a few days to keep insulin down by doing a five-day fast. [12:00] What Is Causing Your Insulin To Increase Unfortunately, stress could be a massive contributor to insulin levels. Poor sleep will also contribute to cortisol. Which will increase insulin levels. Cortisol inhibits insulin production to prevent glucose from being stored. Plus, if you drink too much caffeine, that could be an issue. Eating a lot of carbs can be a factor in your insulin increase. However, every time you eat anything, there will be a small increase. [19:10] Switching From Cow Dairy To Sheep Or Goat Dairy If you react to casein in dairy, then you may need to switch to sheep or goat dairy. Many people can tolerate sheep or goat dairy. If you think you have a sensitivity to cow dairy, then try and switch out your products. Test it out for a month and see if you feel any better. Everyone should take dairy out of their diet for one month of the year. That way, you can see if you notice a difference. [20:15] How Autophagy Works Your brain and body will do well on intermittent fasting because of ketone production and autophagy. The body needs energy. If we don’t get enough energy from our diet, then our body will get the energy from within our cells. Our body knows the difference between an old cell and a new cell. During autophagy, the body will break down old cells and creates stronger cells through recycled materials. If you don’t take the trash out of your house, what would happen? You would get sick, and it would be awful! Well, we need to take out the trash in our bodies. [23:25] The Building Stage vs. The Cleansing Stage Insulin will trigger building. We need a building stage because we need hormones and new cells. Also, we might want to build muscle – we need insulin for this. When insulin is low, we are cleansing. During this stage, our cells will get rid of toxins. Kids will need to be in the building stage more than the cleansing stage. Pregnant women need to be in the building stage too. Most adults don’t need to constantly fuel their system. Instead, they need more time with low insulin than high insulin. [30:00] How Fasting Will Reset Your Digestive System Fasting will take the stress off your gut. When you have gut problems, it’s like having a broken ankle. If you go out and walk every day on your broken ankle, it will never heal. For the gut, you can fast for a period of time each day to reset your digestive system and heal your gut lining. Fasting will reduce inflammation in your digestive system. [37:40] When Does Autophagy Start? We don’t fully know. However, it will depend on your metabolic flexibility. Other factors include sleep and stress. Someone who is metabolic healthy can reach autophagy at sixteen to eighteen hours. If you have high fasting insulin, you may need to fast for multiple days. [43:55] Extended Fasting Strategies When you do an extended fast, you’ll get higher levels of autophagy. Plus, you’ll get a higher level of stem cells. If you are battling chronic disease, it can be a powerful therapeutic strategy. Doing a three-day fast once a year will help prevent chronic disease. If you are underweight, doing a fast every three to four months may be a better strategy. [50:30] Fasting When Insulin Resistant You need to lower insulin. When you lower insulin, you will have lower inflammation. Fasting will help regenerate your insulin receptors. That way, your body will reset how much insulin it produces. AND MUCH MORE! [00:25] About Dr. Jockers Eventually, Dr. Jockers developed irritable bowel issues and lost thirty pounds. He went from 170 lbs to 130 lbs and had a chronic gut infection. Dr. Jockers started to listen to his body and only ate when he was hungry. At this point, he started playing with intermittent fasting. Jockers developed skin cancer. It was a wake-up call to create balance in his life. After doing some research, Dr. Jockers found the ketogenic diet. Eventually, his skin cancer went away after implementing the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. [07:00] The Benefits of Fasting Jockers is trying to maintain his weight and muscle mass. It is easier for him to maintain his muscle mass with fasting. Dr. Jockers likes to fast for brain function – it allows him to think sharply and quickly. Fasting will also help you feel stronger when lifting. Plus, there are mental and emotional benefits of fasting. Jockers doesn’t eat while traveling – there is no need for it. It’s hard for Dr. Jockers to fast through lunch. He fasts through dinner quite often. Having a break during the day is a ritual for most of us. We are addicted to our rituals, and our rituals revolve around food. “The quality of our lives is all about building resiliency.” -Dr. Jockers [10:50] Fasting Fights Cancer If we are continually stimulating insulin in our body, then we are unable to heal. All of our cells need repair; they are damaged by stress, so we need a regular repair process. We need to take our damaged cells and repair them. It is more energy efficient to repair cells, then replace cells. Cancer is driven by the constant signal to grow. When we remove the signal to grow, then the body can repair. People are worried that fasting will remove muscle. However, the body will get the signal to stay strong and fast. Fasting will result in an increase in strength. Once you get going to the gym, you will feel just as strong if not stronger. Training is the number one stimulus for muscle growth. [15:50] Does Glucose or Fat Produce More Energy? Glucose is the fastest process. Burning fat is going to take a lot longer. Burning ketones and fatty acids will produce more energy with fewer waste. If we have carbs, we will want to burn those fast. Being metabolically flexible is the ability to switch back and forth. Without food, our body can burn fat and ketones for fuel. [19:15] The Best Foods to Eat on a Keto Diet Diets need to be customized. People do the best with grass-fed meats, organic eggs, avocados, olives, olive oils, green vegetables, dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, lemons, and limes. You can get most of the benefits of fruits from lemons and limes. Plus, the lemons and limes do not have sugar. Sour foods are good for stimulating bile and stomach acid. Most people have no idea how to stimulate these things. If you are metabolically flexible, then berries are a great source. Consuming too many berries will not allow your body to go into ketosis. We are not getting enough fat-soluble vitamin A. You can find in egg yolk, grass-fed butter, and organ meat. We should do things that stimulate our stomach acid and bile. Bile will sterilize the small intestine. [26:50] The Biggest Mistake on the Ketogenic Diet Not including enough herbs is the biggest mistake on the ketogenic diet. Often, people are eating too many dairy products and not enough herbs. Some people feel better with less vegetables. However, they will still do well with ginger tea and herbs with their meats. [28:00] What to do When You Are Plateauing Find out why you are plateauing. Are you actually getting into ketosis? When you are in ketosis, you should not have cravings. If you are not feeling energetic in ketosis, you may have a thyroid issue. Are the outer-third of your eyebrows thinning? This is a common sign of thyroid problems. Test your fasting insulin. You want to see it between two and five. Check for food sensitivity – you may have a sensitivity to coffee, eggs, or dairy. You can also do your own testing by putting something on your tongue and measuring your pulse. Some people need more stress on their system. Intermittent fasting will ramp up fat burning. Exercise will also help. You can also stress your body with temperature changes using cold showers and saunas. [38:30] About Keto Metabolic Breakthrough It’s a functional medicine approach to the ketogenic diet. In the book, Dr. Jockers explains how to carb cycle and how to overcome plateaus. If you have too much stress on your system, you may not be able to get into ketosis. The book is released on January 28th, and you can reserve a copy HERE. AND MUCH MORE! f you aren’t exactly where you want to be in your business… If you want more clients and sold out programs but it’s a struggle… If you are driven by impact but don’t have the cash flow to make the impact you desire… Here’s what’s blocking you: what you saw and heard when you were growing up impacts how you view money. Unpacking those money stories is the key to shifting from wanting success and actually attaining it. This week on the Epic Success podcast I’m helping you unpack your money story so that you can start to train your brain to transform your business, shift what is programmed in your subconscious to stop blocking you from what you know you are called to do, and tap into what stories you have hardwired and replace with the abundance mindset that you want. I want you to slay your business and have so much money because you’re impacting lives. Ready? Let’s go! The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: “Money is one of those things that touches on all those stories that we connected with from youth.” Start to ask yourself, what was money in my family? What phrases were commonplace to describe money? One of my stories was “you have to work really hard for money.” Having money stories are completely normal and programmed into your subconscious. Great news is it’s completely possible to rewrite those stories and replace them with abundance! [4:11] “Your money story is not your fault.” It’s a pre-programmed story from your childhood that your subconscious took and automated. Your brain is programmed to run off of the programmed stories running on autopilot. Your brain is efficient like that. We want to unpack your money story, take it out of your subconscious, so you can actually choose what kind of thought process you want around money and success. [7:52] “You can’t outperform your subconscious, you have to rewire it.” How can you really grow your business without knowing what’s governing it? Autopilot is a beautiful function of your brain...as long as what’s automated is serving you. The first step to making a change is knowing where you’re at now so you can begin to prime your brain for what you want. [16:36] Here are some questions that you can ask yourself and write down to begin unpacking your money story: What was said about money when I was growing up? How were people with a lot of money described? What do I make it mean about me when I don’t have money? Who am I being with money and who am I being without money? What does having or not having money mean about my worth? Those questions will get you started with retraining your subconscious to have the money mindset that you want. Why is it vital to know where you’re starting in order to train your brain for success? Our brain needs to see things before it creates things. What do I mean by that? Your subconscious mind is responsible for 80-90% of your decisions & actions. So you need to make sure your subconscious mind is programmed for what you want instead of just reacting. Your brain needs your directions, input, and belief in order to get to where you want to go… on purpose. On today’s Epic Success Podcast you’ll identify what type of entrepreneur you are according to how your brain is wired and learn how to turn what’s holding you back into your biggest asset. My hope for you is that you feel empowered after listening to this episode. I want to help you see where you’re at so you can create an intentional path forward to your next level of success. If you’re not sure what entrepreneurial type you are, get ready to find out! The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: “You need to make sure your subconscious mind is programmed for what you want, not just what you’re reacting to.” If you haven’t yet done the work to take your thoughts off auto-pilot, then you’re one of two types of entrepreneurs: a fight entrepreneur or flight entrepreneur. Until you take the time to train your brain, you will continue to create a future that is reactionary. [0:52] “The grind is not bad if you’ve really trained your thinking and you’re coming from a place of being that is different.” A fight entrepreneur is the one who is hustling and grinding. They’re often successful, but it comes at a cost. If the fight is not coming from a place of service then you’re trying to earn recognition and feel valued. Same is true of the flight entrepreneur who has perfectionist tendencies, is detail-oriented, and retracts at the sign of conflict or rejection. Your fight or flight mechanism can be your biggest asset IF you’ve trained your brain to come from a place of service. [6:48] “Am I getting my value from what I do versus just who I am from the moment I was born?” That shift is the difference maker! There’s a brain-training process I take my clients through that helps them become the person who has a million dollars before they have a million dollar business. That’s what opens doors and attracts people who know, like, and trust you - because you’re no longer trying to get value from them because you’ve done the internal work to know that is true. [14:53] Becoming aware of your thoughts and then intentionally designing the life and business you want is pivotal to reaching the next level of success you want. You were designed with an incredible brain! What is holding you back are your thoughts running on autopilot that drive your reactions of fight or flight. What great news that you can train your brain and turn those innate reactions into your biggest asset! So, what type of entrepreneur do you think you are? I’d love to hear! Tag me on socials. Ketogenic Diet http://learntruehealth.com/ketogenic-diet/ Ketogenic Diet for Detox, Weight Loss, Cancer, Autoimmune Disease, Neurodegenerative Disease and Diabetes I discovered my guest, Dr. David Jockers when I first listened to Ty Bollinger and his views about cancer. He's also a Doctor of Natural Medicine and a functional Nutritionist who is going to educate us today on the ketogenic diet for detox and healing other diseases naturally. Jockers is a phenomenal Chiropractor who only after his first year, had such incredible success. Holistic Background Jockers' mom was always very Holistic. She eventually became a Naturopath. So Jockers never took prescription or medication, and his family grew a lot of their food in their garden. He was already living a healthier lifestyle than most people around him. But Jockers struggled with digestive issues despite being athletic. In his 20s, his digestive issues were full blown. He dealt with irritable bowel syndrome and lost weight. His adrenals also were not functioning properly. Jockers started researching and made changes in nutrition and lifestyle. His health improved and that inspired him to go to chiropractic school. Developing Skin Cancer Jockers put up his clinic after he graduated. He was 27 years old and was working a lot. All of a sudden, he developed skin cancer on his nose. So Jockers had to work on his health emotionally, mentally and spiritually. And for his body consuming so many carbohydrates, Jockers usually felt better when he was on a low carb diet. Because his body was always so exhausted, he would crave carbs and eat at night. Eventually, Jockers thought of moving out of his clinic, hire an associate doctor and change his life. Back in 2011, Jockers never even heard of the ketogenic diet. When he did his diet, the nodule on his nose completely went away. It was a confirmation that the body can heal itself. "When we remove the interferences---toxins, bad diet, bad thinking, too little or too much exercise, the body will do what it is designed to do, which is heal and repair," said Jockers. Healing With The Ketogenic Diet Since then, Jockers started researching on the ketogenic diet and lifestyle strategies. The ketogenic diet eventually became his tool to help many people heal naturally. Jockers says everybody will be able to benefit from ketones as an energy source at least for some period. There are two primary energy sources: breakdown of sugar or glucose and the breakdown of fatty acids. So when we think of ketones, we think of the body being able to metabolize fats as an energy source. People who will struggle are those who have adrenal fatigue because they are metabolically inflexible. Jockers also advises that pregnant women should not get into a ketogenic diet. He also says there are also different opinions on kids and athletes. Athletes could benefit from it, but I don't recommend it for extended periods of time. "People who will benefit from ketogenic diet have neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease," Jockers said. "I also recommend the diet combined with fasting and low carb diet to those with brain cancers and several other cancers." The ketogenic diet is also good for people who are trying to lose weight as well as individuals who have diabetes. In Jockers' experience, it's easier to get men into ketosis compared to women. This is because women have more hormonal fluctuations and stress issues. How Ketogenic Diet Works Everybody will benefit from burning ketones when at rest and burning sugar when we are doing something that is stressful or high intensity like exercise. "Glucose or sugar is what we call 'dirty fuel.' The reason is that it is very inefficient," Jockers explains. "So we don't produce a whole lot of cellular energy breaking down sugar, and we produce a lot of metabolic wastes." The benefit of burning sugar is that our body can do it very quickly. But again, we won't produce a lot of cellular energy. "The waste product is lactic acid. Our body can convert that back into a usable energy source, but it takes time to do that," said Jockers. "So when we're in the sugar-burning mode, we produce a lot more acid than we should, and we're also producing a lot more free radicals." Free radicals are wild electrons or wild atoms that are going around causing chaos like damaging DNA and mitochondria. As opposed to ketones, when we burn ketones, we produce an amount of cellular energy. Somewhere between 16 to 18 times more cellular energy from ketone molecule than glucose molecule. On top of that, we produce significantly less waste. Ketones are a fantastic fuel source for our body. So when our body is at its best, we are using ketones when we are at rest. Therefore, we have enough oxygen to be able to use these ketones as our primary energy source. So we want to have that flexibility on our metabolism wherein our body is very good at converting energy. It will eventually lead us to have anti-aging benefits and reduce our risk of chronic disease and improve our mental function. Ketogenic Diet To Beat Cancer "Ketogenic diet is beneficial to cancer patients because it helps keep inflammation under control," Jockers explains. "Cancer cells have a metabolic arrangement. The mitochondria itself is damaged by cancer cells. So instead, all they can do is burn sugar." The ketogenic diet lowers the circulating blood glucose or sugar. By reducing the circulating blood sugar, this hormone called insulin lowers. Insulin is supposed to get the sugar out of the bloodstream and into the cell. But insulin also is pro-inflammatory, so it increases inflammation when it's elevated and increases cell reproduction. So when we lower insulin, we reduce the rate of cancer cells reproduce quickly. Jockers also says that because there is a little amount of glucose or sugar circulating, the cancer cells are not getting the energy substrates it needs. And it depends on that energy substrates to create a defense system against our body's immune system. "When the blood sugar goes down, the ketones go up. And ketones can be used as an excellent energy source," said Jockers. "So the healthy cells are doing good because they are thriving with ketones. Whereas the cancer cell can't use the ketones." Now it will be easier for our body's immune system to target and destroy the cancer cells. Chemotherapy or any other therapy will be much more effective because the cancer cells are now weaker. Oxygen also kills cancer cells. Ketogenic Diet For Detox Ketogenic diet reduces free radicals and inflammation. So in general, our goal in detoxification is real to reduce inflammation overall. We can have some different chemicals that we don't necessarily want in our cells. The fat cells are burned and in effect, mobilizes the toxins in our body. "As long as our liver and bile production is working well, we can grab those toxins in the gut and help pull them out through the feces," Jockers explains. "Ketogenic diet is going to get those things mobilized." For people using the diet for a detoxification program, Jockers recommends the use of additional supplements particularly for phase 1 and two liver detoxification. Binders like activated charcoal can also help the body grab the toxins in the gut. Jockers also says that the ketogenic diet is not bad unless one is a type 1 diabetic where one cannot produce any insulin at all. Having mild ketosis is very therapeutic for the body and helps our body preserve minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Ketogenic Diet Vs. Atkins Diet Jockers says some people just don't know how to do the ketogenic diet right. The Atkins diet is a high protein diet and not necessarily a ketogenic diet. He says that the ketogenic diet involves a lot of non-starchy vegetables and not high protein. Usually, 20 grams of protein a day is recommended. Shakes, salads, nuts, and seeds are also highly recommended. Avocado, coconut oil, coconut butter, and olives are also very beneficial. Just consume meat once a day like grass-fed beef. Vegans and vegetarians will have a harder time on this diet, but a lot of vegetarians will also eat eggs because it is a great fat source with moderate protein. If you don't do eggs, substituting with avocados is fine. Dr. David Jockers DNM, DC, MS is a doctor of natural medicine, functional nutritionist, and corrective care chiropractor. Morning routine versus an evening routine… which one is more important? Experts all over the world have been touting the benefits of having a strong morning routine if you want to be successful. The early bird get the worm, right?! So, whether you’re into eating worms or not (I did see a kid do it when I was in elementary school) I think you’ll discover today that success isn’t about what you do in the morning, it’s really about what you do the night before. You’re about to discover some mind-blowing science that links a consistent, smart evening routine with improved heart health, better brain function, protection against unwanted weight gain, and an overall better quality of life. Some of the things you’ll learn today will stick with you for a lifetime. I’m sure of it. And the best news is that taking advantage of these benefits does not require you to makeover your entire life (let me hear all of my night owls let out a collective, “Whooo Whooo!”). It’s simply the small things that you can add in or adjust that can generate some big changes. So, click play, enjoy, and take advantage of the tips that speak to you! In this episode you'll discover: The dangers and benefits of taking a melatonin supplement. Why sleep is like a crap-shoot for many people every night. What the science says about evening routines and children’s sleep. Why practice does not make perfect. What happens in our brains when we do something consistently. What the 4 stages of learning are. How processes become automated in our brains and bodies. The part of the brain responsible for habit formation. How to create a habit loop. The part of creating a “positive habit” that many people leave out. What it means to have social jet lag. Why it’s critical to understand our biological rhythms. How staying up later on the weekends can affect your body weight. How melatonin and cortisol compete to shape your body. What short-term sleep deprivation can do to your testosterone. How daylight savings time influences heart attacks (this is nuts!). What an optimal evening routine looks like. The problems that tech devices create with our sleep (and how to overcome them). How to use specific bodywork to wind down and improve sleep quality. Which mineral helps to optimize sleep cycles and naturally boost melatonin. Learn how cardio can supercharge your brain to increase mental and physical performance.
In the first part of this ‘Building A Badass Brain’ series, I shared how to begin mastering your brain from a more psychological perspective. If you missed that, I highly recommend you check that out here as it’s been one of the most popular podcast episodes so far. But today, I want to look at the other side of the coin and consider the more physiological side of brain performance. So rather than simply looking at our thoughts and why we tend to ‘self-sabotage’ in some areas of our lives, I want to look at how we can rev up our brain and get it functioning and performing at the very highest level. This means better focus, higher productivity, clearer and quicker thoughts and better decision making as well as the longer term benefit of reducing the risk of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. It’s obviously a pretty big subject. So to make it easier to consume, I’ve put this article into 10 simple action points you can start doing right now to start improving your brain function. #1 Improve Your Gut Health Believe it or not, your brain is intimately connected to your gut. In fact, the gut has its very own nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system, that has a direct connection to the brain via the vagus nerve. Now you would be forgiven for thinking that the brain is always the guy in charge and the gut is mostly receiving directions and signals from the brain. But the opposite is actually true, with the gut more commonly relaying and sending information to the brain up the vagus nerve. What Does This Mean? Well, essentially, the gut and gut flora are responsible for synthesising various vital neurotransmitters and sending signals to the brain. One of these vital neurotransmitters is serotonin, which is a main player in helping us stay in a positive mood and fighting depressive disorders. Studies suggest that the vast majority of our body’s serotonin is actually produced in the gut and passed up to the brain via the vagus nerve. So your gut health (or potential lack of gut health) has a monumental role on your serotonin levels, and, therefore, your propensity to feel low, apathetic and depressed. Not good for brain health and performance! Simply improving your gut health has been shown by several studies to improve brain health, emotional processing and all-round wellbeing. (1, 2, 3) Action Steps So a healthy gut, means a healthier balance of good bacteria in there, means a greater ability to synthesise the required neurotransmitters (including serotonin) and the brain is better equipped to do its job and function optimally. In short, better gut, better brain. I know this is easier said than done (and is something I will cover in much more depth in a future blog post/podcast), but some strategies you could start implementing right now are: Cutting out ‘usual suspects’ to gut problems, i.e. gluten, dairy, soy and processed foods, for at least a week and judge how you feel. Add them back in one-by-one and see if any give you particular jip. Consuming fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kefir (if dairy is cool with you), pickled vegetables or kimchi. Consider a good quality probiotic supplement that ideally has a pre-biotic built in there too. #2 Optimise Your ‘Neuroplasticity’ Your brain has an unbelievable ability to rewire, reorganise and heal itself by building new and different neuro-connections throughout our entire life. This ability is known as ‘neuroplasticity’. It’s how we learn new skills, take on new knowledge and entrain new behaviours as well as heal and build new neuro-connections around blockages that occur as a result of trauma and damage. In this sense, your brain is a bit like a muscle. If you train it, then you will have a greater ability to utilise ‘neuro-plasticity’. Improved learning ability, sharper reactions and, should it come to it, an optimised ability to repair and regenerate itself. Action Steps This ‘training’ of the brain comes as a direct result of placing it in new situations and environments. If you spend all day looking at the same scenery, staring into the same computer screen and doing pretty much the same things over and over, then your brain will become ‘weak’. Just as a muscle would fail to get stronger if you lifted the same weight every day, your brain fails to get stronger if you don’t ‘test’ it with new situations and environments. You can quite simply train your bran with puzzles and ‘brain games’. But a greater way to do it is by making a commitment to regularly do something you’ve never done before. Whether it’s rock climbing, jet-skiing, playing tennis or whatever! If you consistently seek out the learning of new skills, your brain will reward you! #3 Fuel Your Brain Right Your brain is mostly made up of fat and water. This means providing it with a healthy array of dietary fats as well as staying well hydrated are key components in fuelling it properly. But let’s go a little deeper than simply saying ‘drink more water, eat more fat’ (because, you know, I like to do that ;) ). Hydration For Brain Health First off, it’s imperative that you get enough water for your body size on a daily basis. It’s not secret that staying hydrated is key for general health as well as cognitive performance (4, 5). But It’s no good going off the standard, generalised advice of ‘two litres a day’ or ‘eight glasses a day’ if your body requires more or less than that. So basing your daily water intake off the current size of your body is the most logical way forward. I like to use the simplicity of drinking half your body weight (lbs) in fl oz every day, which is an equation suggested in Dr Feyredoon Batmanghelidj’s amazing book, Your Body’s Many Cries For Water. Many of my clients have found this one step to be extremely powerful in making them feel and perform better in as little as 24 hours! Fats For Brain Health The brain likes to run on glucose as its primary fuel source. However, our ‘standard’ high carbohydrate diets have seen occurrences of there being so much glucose available that the brain begins to fail to metabolize glucose effectively, as suggested by a University of Coimbra Centre for Neuroscience and Biology study. In fact, the evidence linking cognitive impairment to poor glucose regulation is so strong that some researchers have taken to calling Alzheimer’s disease “type 3 diabetes”. Moving into a state of ‘ketosis’ (where you either fast or go so low on your carbohydrate intake that you start running on ketones as an alternative to glucose) has been shown by Sherbrooke University in Quebec to improve brain and cognitive function. Now most people aren’t prepared to eat the restrictive diet required to live in a state of ketosis. But you can elevate your blood ketone levels even in the absence of severe carbohydrate restriction with regular consumption of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Several studies have shown that MCTs do elevate blood ketone levels, resulting in improved cognitive performance (6, 7). MCTs are readily available in coconut oil, but you can also get isolated MCT oils too. Another Fat to Mention Omega-3 fats also deserve their own special mention as well as they are integral in supporting brain health. They play a vital role in building brain cell membranes, reducing brain inflammation and promoting new brain cell formation. If you’re struggling to do this optimally, then it can play a vital role in diminished cognitive function and performance as well as incidences of depression, anxiety, dementia and other brain disorders. So ensuring you’re consuming Omega-3 fats regularly is another way of fuelling your brain in the best way possible. Action Steps Use the equation to work out your daily amount of water required to keep you hydrated. See how you feel with a lower (but not crazy low) carbohydrate diet, and consider a daily dose of coconut oil or MCT oil to encourage ketone body build up in the blood. Get your daily dose of Omega-3 fats via things like walnuts, fatty fish and even a fish/krill oil supplement. #4 Sleep Your Way to A Better Brain Of course sleep is important! As with every other cell in your body, it’s where your brain repairs, regenerates and replenishes itself to come back stronger the next day. It’s where you ‘connect the dots’ and turn short term memories into long term memories so you can put into long term storage the knowledge you acquire each day. And it’s also the time when your brain’s own detoxification system, the glymphatic system, has been shown to be 10x more active. In short, this means if you’re not sleeping right then you are leaving waste products and toxins in and around your brain that it would prefer to not be there, leaving you open to reduced performance and long term damage. All in all, better sleep means better cognitive performance, energy, learning ability and decision making as well as reducing the risk of mental and brain disorders in the longer term. I did an entire ‘Sleep Masterclass’ as episode #31 of the podcast with attached blog. Rather than go into all that again here, check that out by clicking here. #5 Use Brain Healthy Herbs & Spices Believe it or not, herbs and spices can have amazing benefits for the body. Now I want to be real about this… a sprinkle of something here and there in between meals of hot dogs and mac and cheese is going to do nothing. But there are a few things that can have real benefits for the brain as added extras to the foundational principles of healthy eating, hydration, brain training and sleep. So here are the main ones I want to mention: Turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, is a fantastic benefit to the brain with awesome antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (8, 9). Other compounds in turmeric have been shown to help the brain repair its own cells. Easily found in curry, you can also add turmeric to a salad or your morning eggs. Although not technically a herb or spice, garlic is very powerful condiment or flavouring (or whatever you want to call it) that thins the blood to help prevent blood clots. It contains compounds thought to protect neurons from injury and disease by stimulating the production of chemicals that help cells withstand stress. Several studies have shown the positive effects of sage extract when it comes to brain function and memory, both in health people of all ages and in those who already show symptoms of Alzheimer’s (10, 11, 12, 13). #6 Exercise For A Healthier Brain Turns out exercise make you feel and perform better. Yup, who knew? Neurogenesis (the growth and development of nervous tissue) has been shown to be induced by exercise, particularly in the hippocampus (14). This means exercise has a direct positive effect on not just our heart, lungs, muscles, etc., but also our brain health too. So regular exercise can help maintain and improve cognitive function, memory, productivity, neurological repair and positively affect emotions and conditions like depression and anxiety. Action Steps Move in some way on a daily basis! #7 Meditation For A Better Brain I’m not going to go on about this too long because, like exercise, the benefits of meditation are now pretty well known. That’s not to discredit it at all – it is still vitally important. But I don’t want to go over information that you’ve already heard over and over again. Studies have now shown that regular meditation actually positively changes the brain in a physical way (15), meaning meditation actually ‘does stuff’ and isn’t all about just being part of the ‘meditation clique’. However, it other studies have also revealed that meditation directly benefits cognitive function, learning ability, memory processing and emotion regulation (16). In short, meditation is real and has real benefits for your brain health in the long run as well as your performance and happiness in the shorter term. Action Step It can be hard to start meditating if you’ve never done it before. And once you start it can be hard to keep it up because you may not ‘notice’ the benefits straightaway. So I recommend just taking 10 minutes each morning before you do anything else to simply sit in silence. If you’re still struggling, try using Brain.fm (which is what I use) or the Headspace iPhone app. The Take Away There are a lot of things we can do to control and master this thing between our ears, whether it be from a more 'mindset' place that I lay out in part one of this blog or the more physiological side here. In all honesty, however, your brain will respond positively by simply looking after it as you would everything else. So building a foundation of health from the inside out will truly allow you to set your brain on fire and be the focussed, productive and happy person you want to be. We’ve talked about the importance of exercise before. The connection between moving your body and psychological and emotional health is no great secret. But if that’s the case, why is it so difficult to make the transition from a sedentary life, to an active one, and how do you build these new behaviors into your day, every day? This week on the show, we offer the 10 steps you’ll need to add supporting movement into your day, from finding the time to leaping over the shame of inactivity, right into action. This conversation is all about letting go of your feelings about not getting out for a walk yesterday, and moving forward, little by little, today. The good news: with as little as 30 minutes of walking 4-5 times a week, you may begin to notice changes in your brain in only a few days! Join us, and let’s get moving!
