Media industry professionals have been in something of a crisis.Declining mental health, uncertainty over hybrid work policies, slow-moving DE&I policies, and still-large disparities between men and women in career progression and pay. These issues are not necessarily unique to media, and there have been improvements made over time in many areas, but there is doubtless more our industry could be doing to improve the lives of its workers. So, how should we unpack all of these challenges? Columnist and Creativebrief editorial director Nicola Kemp returns to the podcast to discuss, alongside reporter Ella Sagar.“The Covid pandemic has created a toxic storm of stress," said Kemp. "And I think that is really having a huge impact on the workplace right now. We might have stopped writing those headlines on the Great Resignation and moved on to the Great Regret, but the reality is a lot of people are still planning to leave the roles they're in in the next 12 months.”---This episode was edited by our production partner Trisonic.Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. According to the Labor Department, payrolls grew by 236,000 for the month, compared to the Dow Jones estimate for 238,000 and below the upwardly revised 326,000 in February. The unemployment rate ticked lower to 3.5%, against expectations that it would hold at 3.6%, with the decrease coming as labor force participation increased to its highest level since before the Covid pandemic. In this episode of The Higher Standard, Chris and Saied examine this news and determine the effect it will have on the economy as a whole. They discuss Nouriel Roubini's continued calls for disaster, stating that neither the US central bank nor the federal government will have the maneuvering room needed to sufficiently stimulate the economy.Chris and Saied look at a survey by recruiter Robert Walters of 3,000 white collar workers who moved jobs during the pandemic, found that 71% wanted to return to their pre-pandemic employer. They also offer some thoughts on a report from Walmart indicating that it expects about 65% of its stores to be serviced by automation by the end of its fiscal year 2026, just days after revealing plans to lay off more than 2,000 people at facilities that fulfill online orders.Join Chris and Saied for this fascinating and informative conversation.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Why job growth in March is not ideal when the Fed is taken into account. Why a strong jobs report hurts the services inflation, something that has not come down since the last CPI report. Why the Saudis and OPEC are moving away from the US dollar.Insight on community banks and their loan loss provisions. And so much more...Resources:"Bosses are training employees to be influencers - after long discouraging social media posts about work" (Forbes via Instagram)"Who is Nouriel Roubini, Wall Street's 'Dr. Doom' economist who has warned of catastrophe for 2 decades?" Businesses can gain ground, especially those needing employees, if they refocus their internal processes to enhance reviews, use this to teach about the value of loyalty, and grasp boomeranging.  Read to full survey at https://www.paychex.com/articles/human-resources/exploring-the-great-regret. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers

At its core, the WorkInSports Podcast teaches you how to sell yourself to an employer in the sports industry. Jennifer in Massachusetts is seeking some sports career advice on that front with this question for VP of Content and Engaged Learning Brian Clapp:“Hey Brian, it feels like 2022 was a tumultuous year for job seekers and employers. First it was the post-pandemic hiring boom, then it was the Great Resignation, then it was the Great Regret, and sprinkled in throughout the year was ghosting. On both sides. I was ghosted by an employer... and sorry to admit, I ghosted an interview I wasn't that interested in. What do you think are the trends and standards that employers will be looking for in 2023?”What Employers WantHiring managers need to feel confident making a hire, so they don't have to repeat the same process a few months later. So what are employers looking for when they scan resumes? Well, for one, your college GPA isn't a critical consideration, as only 37% of employers screen recent grad applications by GPA, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). On the other hand, here are six traits that employers seek when deciding who to hire:1. Problem-solving skills (61.4% said the skill was extremely important)2. Ability to work in a team (61%)3. Strong work ethic (52.4%)4. Analytical/quantitative skills (50.4%)5. Communication skills (50%)6. Technical skills (50%)

Since the pandemic, the workforce has seen some highs and lows. The Great Resignation, The Great Reshuffle, The Great Restructure, and The Great Regret are all terms used to describe the workplace's three-year roller coaster ride. The last few years have been a whirlwind of emotions for employees and businesses, and we are seeing a large number of people emerge from the pandemic even more confused about the state of the economy. Episode 30, host Jessica Fiesta George discusses each of the stages of these pandemic-led phenomenons. The "Great Resignation" was the unusually large number of employees who voluntarily left their jobs to pursue other opportunities. People were leaving jobs in search of better working conditions and remote work opportunities. The "Great Reshuffle" took place when employees decided to move from job to job in search of the best combination of opportunity and pay. Companies were transferring employees from one job to another in the hopes of retaining them, and they were offering higher wages and better benefits in exchange. The "Great Restructure" went hand in hand with the "Great Reshuffle" because organizations were forced to find ways to retain and attract employees. Employers were doing everything they could to stay ahead of their competition, throwing resources and money to ensure they were top of mind for many jobseekers, including increasing base pay, offering sign-on bonuses, accommodating hybrid work options, 4-day work weeks, and more. The "Great Regret" both employees and businesses are discovering that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Employees were drawn to all of the perks only to discover that it wasn't all that it seemed, and they are desperate to return to their previous jobs. Employers spent a lot of money on things they thought would help them attract talent, but they didn't consider the financial impact of increasing pay/benefits, and they're now regretting it. As a result, many businesses are facing financial difficulties and are laying off employees or slowing hiring. So just when many of us have accepted and gotten used to the phrase, The Great Resignation, another one has emerged, and that is, The Great Regret. What we are hearing is that a lot of people who participated in The Great Resignation are now experiencing feelings of regret – that new position they went to is a bit of a let down and not nearly as awesome as they thought it would be. Bummer. Intriguing? Confusing? Unexpected? We get into it! Key Takeaways: Wait. Wait. Wait. Are these really “great regrets”? Or are they doubts? It is pretty common to have doubts! If you are feeling doubts, gather your support people – your boosters! Remember what motivated you to make such a big decision in the first place. And slow down. If you are going to make any sort of “great” decision in life, it's probably worth putting in the time to really think about it!
