Lee Bratcher, President of the Texas Blockchain Council, explains why Texas is the bitcoin mining capitol of the world and the industry's plan to use off-grid natural gas to power bitcoin mining (gas that would otherwise be flared into the atmosphere, representing lost revenue for natural gas producers). Bratcher describes bitcoin as de-centralized, censorship resistant, and the opposite of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). He explains the plan for bitcoin miners to help balance demands on the Texas grid. Texas is the only state with its own grid.

Lee Bratcher is the President of the Texas Blockchain Council. In this interview, we discuss Bitcoin mining in Texas, the North American Blockchain Summit 2023 and the regulatory challenges miners face. We also talk about the potential impact of politicians embracing Bitcoin, the importance of mainstream media presence at the upcoming conference, and efforts to attract professionals to Bitcoin events. - - - - This podcast was made before the start of the Texas Bitcoin Summit in Fort Worth, which started yesterday and runs through until Friday. The summit is expected to be the biggest one yet, with over a thousand attendees and a focus on mining. And this year the Texas Blockchain Council has excelled at attracting some major political figures, including RFK, Vivek Ramaswamy, Ted Cruz, Cynthia Lummis, Andrew Yang and Warren Davidson. Texas seems to understand Bitcoin better than other states, which is attributable in part to the independent thinking and educational efforts in the state. The Texas Bitcoin mining industry is a catalyst for Bitcoin mining across the world, leading the way in developing use cases such as demand response grid balancing services and the incentivisation for the build-out of renewable energy. However, the path to wider acceptance of mining in Texas has not been foregone, and the future is still uncertain. The challenges the industry has faced have been significant. For example, Senate Bill 1751 in Texas sought to ban miners from the very same ancillary services that have benefitted ERCOT's grid balancing objectives. These efforts have been pushed by traditional legacy industries in Texas aided by their strategy of regulatory capture. Traditional industries such as steel mills and petrochemical refineries have been frustrated by Bitcoin miners bidding down the price for demand response services (which in turn has benefits consumers). The bill passed unanimously in the Senate. The fact the bill was ultimately killed in the House was thanks in large part to the efforts of the Texas Blockchain Council under Lee Bratcher's presidency. The issue highlights the problem of getting a political consensus on Bitcoin. Elizabeth Warren, for one, makes it difficult for Democrats to openly support Bitcoin. However, a few Democrats are showing a more practical and nuanced understanding. And, being anti-Bitcoin will become a risky position to take in the future due to generational-led shifts in opinions. Until then, it's up to bodies like the Texas Blockchain Council to continue to fight for Bitcoin. - Show notes: https://www.whatbitcoindid.com/podcast/ensuring-bitcoin-wins This episode's sponsors: Iris Energy - Bitcoin Mining. Lee Bratcher is President of the Texas Blockchain Council. In this interview, we discuss the important work of the Texas Blockchain Council in educating decision-makers and providing a link to Bitcoin businesses, which has helped Texas to become a global leader in Bitcoin. We also talk about the risks of introducing any form of CBDC. - - - - Texas has become the US's home of Bitcoin, maybe the global home of Bitcoin. A state whose motto is friendship has extended its hand to those seeking to mine and develop Bitcoin. Why is this? Texans are independent, hard-working, freedom-loving people. As our guest Lee Bratcher states on the show: “The ethos of Texas just matches up with the ethos of Bitcoin.” But, there is a more pragmatic reason why this has happened: Texas's economic history shows a state that embraces opportunity. And with Bitcoin mining, we are seeing perhaps one of the biggest opportunities to present itself to energy grids. Governments across the world are seeking to transition to more renewable and volatile energy sources. And, as we have seen, Bitcoin mining provides a range of tools to help grids in this transition. Texas's grid operator, ERCOT, has embraced Bitcoin mining, and as such, it is reaping the benefits. Bitcoin mining is making the Texas grid more resilient to peak demands, it is facilitating the build-out of stranded energy sources, and could potentially help keep energy prices low. A welcoming regulatory landscape and collaborative approach to planning are resulting in Texas working towards being the home for 20-25% of the global hashrate. But, Texas has not woken up to the utility of Bitcoin mining on its own. The fact the state has a dedicated Bitcoin advocacy group is a critical factor in this story. The Texas Blockchain Council was set up to make Texas the jurisdiction of choice for Bitcoin. To that end, it educates lawmakers, acts as a conduit between the state and Bitcoin companies, and actively defends Bitcoin against attacks from senators in DC. It's another inspiring and motivating Bitcoin story.
“This industry has so much potential to be a demand side battery for any grid (but especially the Texas grid, because we have so much of it and we have so much stranded energy that because of transmission congestion) that it could be revolution — it could do for the Texas grid what batteries will do for grids in the Northeast or in Western Europe.”— Lee BratcherLee Bratcher is President of the Texas Blockchain Council. Guests:Lee Bratcher (twitter.com/lee_bratcher)Ben Hertz-Shargel (twitter.com/benhertzshargel)Host:Richard Yan (twitter.com/gentso09)Today's motion is “Bitcoin mining is good for the grid.”Bitcoin advocates think bitcoin is a good invention for many reasons, one of which is that it makes the power grid more robust. In 2021, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas made the claim that Bitcoin is, and I quote, “a way to strengthen our energy infrastructure.”But is it? How exactly does bitcoin mining make the grid more robust? In today's debate, I wanted to focus more on whether bitcoin is good for the grid, not whether bitcoin is good. So I try to steer the conversation away from whether bitcoin is a societal good, independent of its impact on the electric grid. One of our guests today is a researcher in the subject matter of electric power grids. The other guest runs a trade group that tries to advocate for bitcoin and crypto industries in the state of Texas. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes. Dr. Lee Bratcher and Dr. Mark Turman dive into the world of cryptocurrency, why Bitcoin is uncensorable, how refugees use it to flee oppression, why Bitcoin will likely rival gold, and why blockchain technology is already being used by banks and governments. Show notes: Dr. Mark Turman and Dr. Lee Bratcher discuss the Institute for Global Engagement at Dallas Baptist University and the Texas Blockchain Counsel, the nonprofit run by Dr. Bratcher. They reflect on what money is, the basics of economics, and the history of Bitcoin (8:16). They discuss the power of Bitcoin to be uncensorable, how even the US government cannot track it, and how it's already helping refugees escape from authoritarian regimes (16:41). They discuss online “wallets,” how Bitcoin gained value, where it comes from, and how it uses the internet to be decentralized (19:50). Dr. Bratcher goes in depth into why Bitcoin is so secure and why Bitcoin has a market cap of around one trillion dollars right now (28:06). They consider why so many use Bitcoin and how it can be an asset like a stock (even though they are technically not) (38:25). Interestingly enough, they consider how this blockchain technology can make banking as a whole much more efficient and how China is using it already (45:35). Finally, they discuss why religious freedom and Bitcoin are connected, and why Bitcoin is fair according to biblical standards (51:25). Bitcoin is considered its own standalone asset class because features set it apart from others. Answering those benefits and more is Lee Bratcher, founder and president of Texas Blockchain Council (TBC), on this episode of Weaver's On-Chain podcast episode with host Tim Savage. Lee's interest in blockchain peaked about six years ago while researching property rights as an academic. Since then, he has been actively working with Texas legislators to advocate for beneficial blockchain policy and business development through the TBC. Tim and Lee focus on the importance blockchain technology solving consensus and double-spend issues that arise from decentralized network environments and how bitcoin was created to be a monetary good. With a inherently scarce denomination of 21 million bitcoins, the bitcoin network offers perfect scarcity as a digital monetary asset. It is further secured and given value through the conversion of energy through the bitcoin mining process, as miners consume energy to solve complex cryptographic puzzles to mint blocks on the proof of work blockchain network. The conversation shifts focus to the ethereum 2.0 network as they discuss proof of work vs. proof of stake algorithms and turing-complete vs. slower moving architecture in monetary and blockchain computing systems. Are bitcoin and ethereum comparable, or are these really fundamentally different systems with different purposes?

I don't know much about cryptocurrency but I'm sure that this is something that's not going away or be limited to 100 years as others may speculate. After talking to Lee Bratcher of Texas Blockchain Council, I just realized that it's as simple as making a technological advancement in the way we move money around. Bitcoin and blockchain technology can have a considerable impact on your business or company by reducing the transaction fees, processing time and improve cross-border payments. With this technology transactions are fast, digital, secure and worldwide that allows the maintenance of records without risk of data being pirated which is what your every transaction need.
