Parenting young children can be extremely taxing, but also beautiful – and hilarious. That nuance is at the core of Loryn Brantz's new poetry collection, Poems of Parenting. The illustrated poems are based on Brantz's popular series of Instagram posts that give parents permission to laugh. In today's episode, the artist and author shares a selection of poems with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes. They also discuss Brantz's creative pivot from children to adults, the phrase "mom brain" and Brantz's relationship to her own children. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

This month marks six years of the Meet St Louis Podcast. With more than 280 episodes, it has been the biggest joy to share the stories of our city's local businesses. To mark six years – we thought we'd chat with one of St Louis' best – Loryn Nalic – the chef and owner of Balkan Treat Box and the recently opened Telva at the Ridge. We first sat down with Loryn back in 2018 – our first year of the podcast as she prepared to open their first brick-and-mortar restaurant in Webster Groves. Fast forward, and the growth and success has been incredible. Balkan Treat Box has landed on numerous best-of lists both locally and nationally, and Loryn has been named a James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest multiple times – basically the Oscars of the food world. I sat down with Loryn at their new café Telva for a revisited conversation about bringing Balkan food to the forefront of the restaurant world, plans for expansion and the biggest risks and rewards over the years as a restaurant owner. You can try these dishes and experience the Balkan food for yourself Wednesday - Sunday at Telva and Tuesday - Saturday at Balkan Treat Box. You heard Loryn mentioned plans for dinner, stay tuned to their social media for the official launch date of weekend dinner service.
This month's episode features Loryn Posladek and Kyle Leihsing who are leading the charge on national stewardship efforts representing Access Fund's Conservation Team. For the last five years, Loryn and Kyle have traversed the country dedicating themselves to assisting LCOs and other conservation partners on building sustainable trails and other critical infrastructure at our beloved climbing areas. Loryn and Kyle highlight trends they have noticed over the years regarding stewardship participation, what can be done to continue to improve the experience for the participants, and how to get more climbers engaged in stewardship activities. There appears to be a large gap in the number of recreationists that consistently access public land for recreation purposes but don't necessarily participate in the activities that are aimed at stewarding these resources. We round out the conversation getting into the multi-year process they have been a part of creating adaptive access at the Thumb and Needle in Estes Park, Colorado. 6:31 - Loryn and Kyle's intros 7:58 - Changes in the Conservation Team program 10:48 - What keeps them coming back year after year 14:28 - Current project in Rumney 18:21 - What areas are still left on the list to visit? 21:35 - Going from athlete to advocate 27:59 - onX Backcountry's Breaking Trails Report & the "stewardship gap" 42:58 - "Trail dogs" and the new archetype of climber 45:30 - Bridging the stewardship gap through mentorship 51:11 - Creating adaptive trails in Estes Park, CO 1:02:38 - 2024 plans for the Thumb and Needle Access Fund's Conservation Teams: https://www.accessfund.org/latest-news/meet-your-2024-climbing-conservation-teams onX Backcountry's Breaking Trails Report: https://www.onxmaps.com/onx-access-initiatives/breaking-trails Prospect Mountain (Thumb and Needle) on Mountain Project: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105860404/prospect-mountain
After years of working for other restaurateurs Loryn Nalic, together with her husband Edo Nalic, opened Balkan Treat Box in 2016 as a food truck. The inspiration for the concept came from falling in love with her husband and falling in love with his native Bosnian cuisine; but the development of the menu came from a deeply personal visit she took to Bosnia, which brought the entire Balkan Treat Box menu into focus starting with her favorite -- the cevapi. In this episode Loryn discusses with Meera and Michelle her experience in restaurants; her flagship restaurant and her new restaurant Telva at The Ridge; and the local restaurants that have captured her heart. Hosted on Acast. Loryn had an epic pumpkin spice themed baby shower, and with just about a month left, we're feeling the pressure to get everything done around the house before baby's arrival. We get a lot of questions about whether or not we'll show our baby on social media, and we examine how we feel about it. Shawn reveals what he think he'll be better at when it comes to parenting, and Loryn is thrilled with his revelation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Everyone's talking about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce this week and we are no exception! Shawn's all for it, while Loryn has different feelings. Speaking of superstars, N*SYNC had a helluva a week, and Loryn learned the story behind Justin Timberlake's infamous pronunciation of the "It's gonna be me." We also get into the frustration that is maternity vs. paternity leave, and why everyone expects Shawn to return to work immediately, but not Loryn. This week's "I Just Found Out" involve a fun fact about Cheetos, and how giraffes test for ovulation (they test for ovulation?!) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We went to an 8-hour birth 101 class and survived. You know what didn't? Our new couch. The sleeper sofa we JUST bought for our parents' to use once baby's here caught fire at the store before we picked up. Speaking of hot messes, we quiz each other on southern vs. midwest slang, and Loryn deals with a prenatal massage scam. There's a hilarious trend going around where couples are revealing the most embarrassingly cringey things they say in their relationship, and we had to bring up a few of our own. Shawn almost gives away our baby's name, so we decide to drop a new hint each week to see if anyone can guess it. Busch Light dropped a pumpkin brew (sort of), we learn more amazing Australian slang, and there's a new segment called "What made Loryn cry this week?" And yes, it's as irrational as it sounds. On this week's episode, Josh talks with Loryn Nalic from Balkan Treat Box about growing her wildly popular food concept from a food truck dream to one of the most versatile and exciting food brands in St. Louis. They talk about navigating the early chaos of the opening of CityPark, approaching business with the humility and willingness to ask for help, and mentoring the next generation of emerging food entrepreneurs. It's easy to see that Loryn's secret sauce is a quick smile and a hearty laugh…even when the lines are long. Let's go…
There are 2 types of people while traveling: the planner, and the one who goes with the flow. We're gearing up for our baby moon in Hawaii this week, and blindly ranking 5 cities/countries we've been to together.
Loryn survives her first major holiday (4th of July) sober, which gets us thinking about how drinking in your 20s is so different from your 30s. Speaking of things that make us want to drink, we discover how ridiculously expensive baby strollers can be. Speaking of the word "speak", Taylor Swift just dropped her re-recorded album "Speak Now" that has sparked some controversy over a lyric change. We went to a Blink-182 concert and they have one of the craziest misheard lyrics of all time. Shawn wore matching swimsuits with 14 dudes in Vegas while Loryn got to go on the field at the Padres baseball game for Harry Potter night. Loryn experienced a first this week - going to a wedding sober - and it was a doozy. We also had our anatomy scan and the baby is measuring the size of a White Claw! April 27, 2023 marked 12 years since the devastating tornado outbreak in Alabama. Mike Dubberly got a chance to talk with former Alabama All-American Defensive Lineman and Co-Captain Shannon Brown, who's now the principal at Liberty Middle School in Madison, Alabama. On April 27, 2011, Shannon lost his daughter Loryn in the EF-4 tornado that hit Tuscaloosa. The college student was pursuing her dream of attending the University of Alabama and now, endowment scholarships have been created in her honor. Here's Shannon's conversation with Mike Dubberly.
Loryn Nalic of Balkan Treat Box joins us on the show. Hear about Loryn's childhood, her love story, and the passion that goes into one of St. Louis' hottest restaurants. The success in the kitchen comes as no surprise, the majority of Loryn's childhood revolved around cooking extravagant and fun meals for her family. When Loryn met Edo, she developed a love for Balkan food as she would cook to help him feel a little less homesick. The trajectory of Loryn's career changed on an intensive R&D trip to the Balkans. She quickly picked up on traditions that she could take home to St. Louis. After running a successful food truck, Balkan Treat Box found its home in Webster Groves in 2019. Nalic has been featured in Food & Wine, James Beard Finalist, St. Louis Business Journal, along with many other publications. Support the show

In today's bonus episode our host, Emily Landers, welcomes Loryn Taylor onto HSDT! Loryn is the founder of both LE Fine Jewelry and Lo Well. Loryn graduated from Texas A&M in 2019 with a degree in architecture and a minor in graphic design. Upon graduating, Loryn started a jewelry business to occupy her time during a lengthy job search. What started as a hobby quickly became her full-time business as Lo Well. And as if one jewelry company wasn't enough, Loryn launched a new company in the spring of 2020 that is solely fine jewelry - LE Fine Jewelry - short for Loryn Elizabeth. Loryn continues to use her degree in architecture to custom design her fine jewelry line. She works closely with manufacturers and jewelers locally in Dallas, Texas, and is currently in the process of attending GIA school to further her education in all things diamonds! When Loryn isn't working on new designs, shipping out her beautiful pieces, or speaking with clients, she is likely reading, dining out with friends, traveling, or enjoying time with her family. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howdshedothat/support
Speech-Language Pathologist Loryn McGill joins us for today's episode. With extensive experience in the field of speech therapy, particularly stuttering, Loryn tells us the arguably most important things someone who stutters and their loved ones need to know. What is speech therapy like? What should I think if my child stutters? Are there places where I can meet other people who stutter? Loryn answers all of these questions and more. This episode is especially dear to me, because Loryn was my very own speech pathologist when I was young. Check out all her work at http://www.ocfluency.com/! As always, thank you for your support, and I hope you got something out of this. If you did, share Stuttering Through Life to your friends and family to spread awareness about stuttering!
