MARIN HINKLE, “Rose Weissman,” joyfully gives Kevin her insights and loving memories, as she and he talk through scene for scene of season 3, episode 2. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We spoke with Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman, Marin Hinkle as Rose Weissman, Michael Zegen as Joel Maisel, Kevin Pollak as Moishe Maisel, Caroline Aaron as Shirley Maisel, Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce, Reid Scott as Gordon Ford, and Jason Ralph as Mike Carr. The cast was funny yet emotional as we spoke to them about where the show started and ended. We talk about the finale at GREAT lengths, so please ensure you have seen the show before listening. However, here is the cast talking about true soulmates, the journey, the evolution of their characters, and more -- and the legacy they leave behind. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Polina Jdanova Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: It's the late 1950s, and Miriam "Midge" Maisel has everything she has ever wanted -- the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn't previously know she had -- stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the "Tonight Show" couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls"). *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season five is available on Prime Video now. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 4 "Susan". Marin Hinkle as Rose and Tony Shalhoub as Abe. Image by Phillippe Antonello and Prime Video. Copyright Amazon Studios 2023. The fourth episode of Maisel's final season, "Susan", gave us what the Sherman-Palladinos have wanted to show us the entire time - but haven't been able to fit in yet: A full-on musical production complete with their trademark quirks and ridiculous meta-feeling observation that while they apparently really love musicals, they also know they are somewhat silly. While we may be in the minority of fans that actually enjoys the musicals they produce, we also missed the presence of a flash-forward in this episode. Plus, a crack in the armor hiding Susie's backstory jumped in her path. Listen to our coverage of previous seasons! How do you balance both the weight and the sense of possibility of pursuing a massive dream? Especially when you feel you're representing generations and building a life and living in a very public way, from your earliest years? We all know the story of the American Dream goes: move to America in pursuit of a better life. One with more resources, access, and opportunities, not just for yourself, but your kids, who so often hold in their hands the dreams and expectations and sacrifices of those who came before them and made it possible for them to be where they are today. It can be quite the burden. On the other hand, there's the dream side of the equation. The example of making hard choices and taking action in the belief that amazing things are possible. My guest today, acclaimed actor, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, learned this from her dad.In our eye-opening conversation today about the complexities of navigating Hollywood as a young child and woman, how the values instilled by her father molded her and the boundaries that sustain her career, and more, JoAnna and I explore the shifting nature of how stories are told in media and their ability to help us relate to one another, feel joy or even grieve. So join us, as she and I dive deeper into her background and then bring it back to the big picture, which is the powerful nature of dreams, joy, and storytelling. When we consider the qualities and traits passed down throughout our family tree, we may think of the curly hair we share with a sibling or a natural talent like singing. But what about the not-so-pleasant traits, beliefs, or patterns that appear generation after generation that are hard to shake? Do we keep making these same old mistakes just because "old patterns die hard," as they say? Or will you be the one who takes a new path, no matter how hard or long it takes?Jennifer Grey is no stranger to taking the road less traveled. From her most visible standout moments, like her iconic role as the star of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, to her personal journey to self-acceptance, Grey has found her way back to herself one step at a time. And you'll hear today that she's just as forthcoming about her journey as she is in her recently released memoir Out of the Corner. In this transparent conversation with her, we explore how Grey views and juggles her family's history and culture, her identity, and her role as the cycle breaker through the lens of her younger and present self. Her awareness of what her mother sacrificed to be a wife and mother shapes how Grey leads her life and chooses to tell her story now. And despite what patterns, gender roles, or responsibilities she was expected to bear or even did at one point, Grey is no longer worried about pleasing people but just being as real and true to herself as possible. Emmy nominated Actress Marin Hinkle is well known for her work on 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' "Two and a Half Men" and several other television series - but this is not necessarily the career that this theater actress set out to have. Similarly, Marin's personal life has been filled with unexpected twists, including her path to motherhood. Marin joined Abby and Leeds and shared the many insights she picked up throughout these journeys. And perhaps the best lesson came from the example she herself demonstrated in her willingness to treat every interaction in life with a boundless level of enthusiasm as well as vulnerability. Today, based on two listeners' suggestions, Ali and Asif discuss ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and Trichotillomania. Asif admits to only having watched the pilot of ‘Mrs Maisel' (2:26) and as such, Ali gives Asif a sales pitch on why the show should be watched. After a brief digression about TV shows that they were exposed to on airline flights, Ali compares ‘Mrs. Maisel' to Amy Sherman-Palladino's previous show ‘Gilmore Girls' as well as musicals. Then Ali gushes about the expert acting of all the principal characters in the show, particularly Alex Bornstein, Tony Shaloub, Marin Hinkle and especially Rachel Brosnahan. Then Ali asks Asif about trichotillomania (28:47). Asif talks about the definition, how often it is seen and how it is diagnosed. Asif then discusses how it is different from OCD and why we think it occurs. Asif then talks about the long term consequences of trichotillomania including compulsive hair eating (trichophagia) and the treatment of the disorder. Jason gives his Instant Reaction to the first four episodes of Amazon Prime's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3. Created by: Amy Sherman-PalladinoStarring: Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Marin Hinkle, Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, Jane Lynch.
Marin Hinkle plays matriarch, Rose Weissman, on the Amazon Original series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which just released its third season. You may also recognize Hinkle from her long-running role as Judith on Two and a Half Men, and so many other contributions in theater, TV, and film. We’re huge fans of Marin, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the entire ensemble cast. As we sat down with her in the studio, we discovered not just an incredible actor, but also someone who radiates kindness, warmth, and generosity of spirit, someone who is beautifully open, someone who left us feeling like we’d just spent time with an old friend. In today's conversation, we explored Hinkle's time growing up outside Boston, her love of the ocean and devotion to ballet in the early days that, after an injury, created the space for acting to emerge while at Brown and take center stage. We talk about the people who’ve touched down and served as teachers and mentors and explore candidly the tough decisions that came along the way as she stepped into the business of acting, the many learnings and how family began to take more of the spotlight over time. Marin also shares her very human experience with pain and how her time on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel became not just a job for her, but also a source of awakening and discovery, peace and ease.Check out our offerings & partners: ThirdLove: Go to ThirdLove.com/GOODLIFE now to find your perfect-fitting bra... and get 15% off your first purchase!Uncommon Goods: Go to UncommonGoods.com/goodlife to receive $5 off your first purchase.Enstrom: Shop Enstrom toffee and other sweet treats at Enstrom.com/GOODLIFE and receive up to 20% off your first order using promo code GOODLIFE.Have you discovered your Sparketype yet? Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Zachary Levi and the rest of the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel came out to the Paris Theater in New York City last night for the season 2 premiere.
Amazon Studios gave a two-season order for their period comedy show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starring Rachel Brosnahan and created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and they shouldn't stop there. The show follows Midge Maisel as a 1950s Jewish Upper Westside in NYC housewife who through some tragic circumstances in her marriage finds herself single and back living with her parents with two young children. Midge is bitten by the stand-up comedy bug when she drunkenly gets on stage at The Gaslight Cafe and performs an impromptu set. An employee at the cafe, Susie (Alex Borstein) sees potential in Midge and helps her hone her newfound passion. Midge's life isn't all roses as she has to navigate 1950 ideals (some she holds and some she fights), her parents in Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle who play Abe and Rose Weissman respectively, and her former life of privilege. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5939723/advertisement
