LW1491 - More Thoughts on Project as Wall Art In the Editors Comments in LensWork #173, I discussed a presentation experiment that allowed me to exhibit a multi-image project on the wall using poster hangers. I just changed the presentation to a different project and that has me thinking about a few things I'm observed since the initial installation. I've been observing people's reaction to this type of presentation and discovered a couple of interesting and unexpected things about how people approach a wall full of art. This week, we're thrilled to welcome featured Ballard Designs artist Anne Bohne to the show to discuss her creative journey, the inspiration behind her coastal and Southern landscapes, and how she translates hand‑painted art into textiles and home decor. Anne shares the inspiration behind her techniques (why she loves watercolor for its immediacy and acrylic for looser washes), ways to collect and live with art, and playful ideas—like painted mats and wrapped frames—that make artwork feel personal and playful in a home. Key Takeaways: - Watercolor is forgiving and portable; acrylic on raw canvas or Birch board yields lively effects. - Layer florals with geometric or block motifs for balance—look to antique textiles for inspiration. - Start collecting with what delights you (prints included); rotate art through rooms to refresh a space. - Painted mats, fabric‑wrapped frames, and bespoke framing add playful, personal touches. Send us a Text Message. In this episode of the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast, host Angela Nicholson welcomes the talented Verity Milligan, an award-winning photographer based in Birmingham, UK. Verity is renowned for her stunning cityscapes of Birmingham and her breathtaking photographs of the natural world. Besides her personal projects, Verity creates content for globally recognized brands and has been a long-standing judge for the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. The conversation begins by highlighting Verity's enthusiasm for photography. Verity shares her exhilarating experiences of waking up at dawn, driven by the chance to capture unique, foggy landscapes. Her passion is evident as she describes the thrill of photographing rare weather conditions and sharing those moments with others.Verity's journey into photography is unconventional. Initially, on an academic path, she pivoted from a master's degree in American visual culture and a stint running an independent cinema to teaching media theory and documentary filmmaking. Her photography journey began as a hobby and gradually became her career, leading her to choose between academia and freelancing. Ultimately, her love for photography won, allowing her to embrace a creative and flexible lifestyle.Angela and Verity delve into the nuances of Verity's work, discussing how her background in documentary filmmaking influences her photography. Verity emphasizes the importance of storytelling and lighting, which she carries over from her video work to her still images. This narrative-driven approach sets her work apart, making her photographs not just visually stunning but also emotionally compelling. The episode also explores the practical aspects of Verity's career, including her approach to client work and the challenges of managing expectations. Verity shares insights into her freelance life, the joy of outdoor photography and the delicate balance of maintaining creativity while fulfilling commercial demands. She highlights the importance of personal projects, which not only fuel her passion but also attract clients who appreciate her unique style.Verity leads workshops, using her teaching experience to inspire and educate others. She emphasises the emotional connection with the landscape over technical perfection, fostering a supportive environment for her participants. The discussion touches on the representation of women in photography. Verity notes the progress made but acknowledges the need for more female voices in senior roles, judging panels, and editorial positions. Throughout the episode, Verity's genuine love for photography shines through. Multiple times throughout my life, I've learned HOW important it is to lean into my own intuition, instead of playing by other people's rulebooks. We all have that gut feeling, and little ‘inner knowing', but so often, we're afraid to tune into it (or we've forgotten how to). I even experienced this with my most recent Ascend retreat event, and the way I went about planning and marketing for it. While I believe it can be helpful to get other people's perspectives, in the end, you have to be able to trust that you really DO know what's best, and what will yield the most fruitful outcome.   In this episode, we cover: My recent experience with trying to create a fun and unique gym space in our (newly) renovated home, and my realization that came from this Leaning into your intuition and gut feeling, instead of playing by someone else's rules and what they think you should do Opening registration and marketing for my Ascend retreat a year in advance, and the results that came from that Choosing to do things my own way with my entrepreneurial journey, the decisions I made as a first time mom, etc.   Resources & Links: Learn more about ASCEND retreats and get on my email list to get all the updates! Nearly a year to the day after Kansas voters surprised the nation by defeating an anti-abortion ballot question, Ohio voters defeated a similar, if cagier, effort to limit access in that state. This week, they rejected an effort to raise the threshold for approval of future ballot measures from a simple majority, which would have made it harder to protect abortion access with yet another ballot question come November. Meanwhile, the number of Americans without health insurance has dropped to an all-time low, though few noticed. Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Politico, Rachel Roubein of The Washington Post, and Emmarie Huetteman of KFF Health News join KFF Health News' chief Washington correspondent, Julie Rovner, to discuss these issues and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews Kate McEvoy, executive director of the National Association of Medicaid Directors, about how the “Medicaid unwinding” is going, as millions have their eligibilityfor coverage rechecked. Plus, for “extra credit” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: KFF Health News' “How the Texas Trial Changed the Story of Abortion Rights in America,” by Sarah Varney. Tune in several ways to fill your cup all month long: She's Marked Podcast, The Marked Life Blog, The MRKD Store and enjoy a special tribute poem to Moms over on Youtube. Joining me today to talk about marinating in the wait is Karen Mejeur. Karen - who is from Cape Cod - has been married for 17 years and has 2 boys, ages 15 and 14. God has poured so much into her through the years that she believes now is her time to be able to give back by pouring into others. Moms pour out all they are and all they have for their children, and they need someone to come alongside them to refresh, encourage, and build them up. Karen feels that the Lord has called her to be a mom to moms (#themomsmom). If she can help moms be emotionally healthy and strong, then she will be impacting their homes, their children, and their husbands. She believes healthy moms raise healthy children. Karen's Coaching Program, "A 90 Day Guide on How to bring Transformation to your Family and Revitalize your Life", empowers overwhelmed Moms who deal with constant demands to prioritize themselves so they can be the superwoman their family expects them to be. She helps them learn to maintain peace in the midst of chaos and stress, better manage their time, and find purpose in the mundane. In this episode, Karen shares on: - Waiting on the Lord for His perfect timing - The willingness to put off our desires for God's best - Healed moms birthing healed homes - Life as an "old" mom - Victoriously healing from the pain of your past Connect with Karen! SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Episode Notes:   Dan will have his usual two stories this week The first story follows a young man who decides to take a trip on LSD and ultimately, it costs his friend his life. But not how you think.  The second  story is set in Wisconsin -  the ghosts of Jay Road. A couple of possible deaths where the killers were never held responsible for their crimes seems to have led to some intense paranormal energy that still lingers in the area powerfully to this day. Lynze has a tale about a hat man who is not the usual kind of hat man. Perhaps he morphed into something else to wreak havoc on this young boy. Then,  a teenage boy gives into his girlfriend  and agrees to play with a spirit board. When that goes sideways, he regrets it.  New Merch: Awesome new "Gravedigger" Tee and Wall Art now in the bad magic store this week.  A creepy skeleton in a disturbed shallow grave, a really cool and interesting, realistic graphic tee.
