After his stint in Washington Josh moved to California and enrolled in Stanford where he earned a joint MBA/JD. Josh has released a comprehensive plan to combat climate change, by far the most comprehensive proposal of any candidate for this office. These proposals include; achieving carbon neutrality in state government agencies by 2030, paying farmers to sequester carbon, and a prize for breakthrough inventions in clean technology. He has earned the endorsements of the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters. Josh believes healthcare is a human right and that single-payer must be our north star. This is a generational challenge that we can and must meet. Josh is a leader in education advocacy, having served on the San Mateo County Childcare partnership council and on the UC Merced board of trustees. He is also a public-school parent in Menlo Park. This district has more than its share of pioneering non-profits, successful and influential businesses, and world-class educational institutions. Josh’s 30 years of leadership in these sectors, make him ideally suited to bring the best ideas from each of them to Government. Josh will fight for smart, transit-oriented growth. Local control must include local responsibility for the region we all share. If we can't do a better job of addressing this issue, we face a lost generation of middle-class residents, communities without nurses, teachers, and first responders. In 2016 Josh’s work on education, the environment, and income equality was recognized with a Jefferson Award for Public Service, earning him praise from Michelle Obama and CBS News. Sometimes it seems financial plans are focused more on products or investment theory instead of how clients live their real lives. Adding more value for the client, by using a process that focuses on what makes a real difference to them, starts with looking at how they actually experience their money day by day. And this point of view compels us to challenge some widely held assumptions about how to deliver financial planning. Our guest, financial planning pioneer and ACP founder Bert Whitehead, JD, MBA, discusses seven core concepts holistic financial planners can apply to acknowledge the reality of what it’s like to create a plan for a real, living person, instead of a financial institution. Jake Carlson, MBA/JD, is a leadership development expert and host of the Modern Leadership Podcast. He created the Elite Achiever Academy to encourage leadership through the CIA of Influence (Conviction, Irresistibility & Accountability). He holds a JD in taxation from California Western School of Law, an MBA in Finance from San Diego State University and a BA from Brigham Young University. Additionally, he is the former Chief Operating Officer of the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Area Council, BSA and Associate Regional Director of the National BSA Foundation. Jake has been a Young Men leader, a Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School president. His passion is leadership, influence, and helping others discover their zone of genius. After a year abroad, Jake, Kari, and their three children settled (for the time being) in Gilbert, Arizona. Recently, Jake and his family returned from spending nearly a year traveling to twelve countries around the world experiencing the cultures and how the church functions. The Carlson family began their journey in the Philippines, where Brother Carlson served his mission, before traveling to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Czech republic, Italy, Scotland, England, France, and Wells before returning home to the United States. In the podcast episode, Brother Carlson shares his experiences about the uniqueness of the church in different parts of the world and lessons that he learned as he had opportunities to serve far from home. Enter Jake... In the last year, as a family, we traveled through 12 countries in Asia and Europe, attending 11 different wards, eight branches, one group, and even worshipping in Mandalay, Myanmar, where the Church doesn’t have a presence (yet). Every Sunday provided unique experiences, new friends, and even a few universals (who is teaching Elder’s Quorum this week… anyone?) The Church is awesome wherever you travel; regardless of culture, language, or the poverty within the local geography. We learned a lot, grew closer as a family and saw things our journals will memorialize for generations. We love the Church and found a warm, welcoming church family in every house of worship we attended. The Lord knows the experiences we need and continues to provide opportunities for us to learn. One opportunity in particular changed my understanding of leadership as we passed through Prague, Czech Republic. What started as a two-week stop to see the world-famous Christmas markets turned into 75 days of fun, fellowship, and service. It was there that I learned, really learned, about Sunday School lesson preparation. It happened when a Sunday School teacher asked if I could fill in for her by preparing a Gospel Principles lesson on the Creation for the following week. I agreed. The Czech Republic ocated in Central Europe, east of Germany and north of Austria and has a population over 10 million,  2,500 of which are church members. Formed following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the people have endured many difficult years, including German occupation during World War II and subsequently becoming a one-party communist state. The Church likewise struggled, but the Saints grew strong. For over 40 years, public activity of the Church was prohibited, but members quietly kept their faith, at times sneaking copies of The Book of Mormon into the country with false covers to avoid confiscation. Finally, in 1990, through the efforts of President Monson, the church was granted recognition; there were 345 members. In 2016, President Uchtdorf organized the first stake in the Czech Republic, headquartered in the capital city, Prague. Leadership in the Prague Ward is incredible and missionary work is gathering momentum. Each Sunday, about one quarter of the Prague ward attendance consists of visitors. Sacrament meeting is in Czech, but guests can borrow headphones to listen while the full-time missionaries translate.

Huntsman Hall at Wharton We had an excellent conversation with Penn/Wharton's Colleen France, Associate Director for JD/MBA Recruitment & Administration. Colleen answered loads of questions, including the following two questions about JD/MBA career opportunities: Linda Abraham:  What are the typical careers that graduates of the Joint degree program go into and does it differ? Do you see some patterns developing in terms of career opportunities? Are they in any way different from the four year program if you are in the three year program? Colleen France: While we haven’t had any graduating classes yet, we did just have our first class go through their second year summers. What we found was about half of them went to law firms and the other half went to business internships. More of those that went to law firms went to New York firms to do corporate type law work, M&A, bankruptcy etc. Of those that went into business, a few went to private equity firms and restructuring firms... It does vary and we have a few people that split their summers between private equity and restructuring or between law firms and businesses. A few law firms in New York have fellowship programs with some of the major banks in New York, so those are definitely slots that the JD/MBA are looking at. ...What we have been seeing is those that do want to go into law, most of them are interested in doing a few years at a law firm and then making a switch over to business. Realizing that they are going to get really solid training as corporate lawyers or M&A lawyers or whatever it may be at some of the top firms in the world. Then taking those skills and utilizing them, maybe by going to a hedge fund, an investment bank, private equity or venture capitalist firm... Linda Abraham: Related to what we have been discussing, Andrew asks, "Now that the first class of the three year program is getting ready to graduate, how different is their transition into the job market than those of the four year program?" Colleen France: I would say that it is a little bit more straightforward. The issue with the four year program and I think the reluctance on the part of the law firms in the past to hire JD/MBAs is that if a student does their second summer at a law firm, they worry a little bit about whether they will come back next summer. They worry that they will go to a Wall Street bank or that they will go to the bank rather than come back to the firm. I think that what we are seeing is that in the three year programs, students certainly have the ability to explore their career option but have to come into the program strategically thinking about what they want to do when they get out at a much swifter pace.
