Book Vs. Movie: The Day the Earth Stood StillThe 1940 Short Story Vs. the 1951 AdaptationThe Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic sci-fi story. The iconic 1951 film was based on Harry Bates' short story "Farewell to the Master." Both versions share a similar premise—an alien visitor and his robot arrive on Earth, but they diverge significantly in tone and message. In Bates' 1940 story, Klaatu and his robot Gnut arrive on Earth, but Klaatu is quickly killed. The focus then shifts to Gnut, who, in a twist ending, is revealed to be the true master, not Klaatu. This philosophical narrative explores the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of power, and intelligence beyond human understanding. The film adapts the story into a Cold War parable. Klaatu, more of a Christ-like figure, comes with a warning: Earth must abandon violence and nuclear weapons or face destruction by an interplanetary alliance. His robot, Gort, serves as an enforcer of this message, not the master. The film delivers a clear moral about peace and diplomacy, reflecting the political fears of its time. Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? EPISODE 27 - “Dona Drake: What Price Fame” - 03/18/2024 Latina star DONA DRAKE, who signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1941, was many things — singer, dancer, actress, bandleader, musician — but one thing she wasn't, as it turned out, was Latin! While Paramount promoted their new discovery as a spitfire Latina born in Mexico City, Drake was, in fact, an African-American woman from Florida who pretended to be Latin, going so far as to learn Spanish fluently, in order to have a better chance at a Hollywood career. Count von Nudo and Schmutt P. Eddler do the time warp back to the musical that started a cult phenomenon exactly 50 years ago - The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show. We celebrate the opening song "Science fiction/Double Feature", which name-checks some of the greatest science fiction and horror films of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. We have been able to include six of the 11 films mentioned in this theme week. The other five, such as King Kong (1933) and The Invisible Man (1933) belong to big Hollywood studios, making it more difficult for us to get the rights to show them (but we will keep trying).   Tony Sokol over at DenofGeek.com has a great overview of each song and film reference, from which we have stolen, sorry, quoted extensively. Do read his original article for more context and in-depth insights. It is remarkable how well Richard O'Brien knew his B-movies, given that there was no Internet or IMDb back in the days, but that is a sign of true geek fandom. Respect! The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) -  “Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us where we stand.” A science fiction film with a message for earth to get its s#!t together, by the great director Robert Wise.  “Klaatu barada nikto”.Flash Gordon (1936) -  “And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear”. An episodic cinema serial with Buster Crabbe fighting Ming the Merciless. Familiar from television re-runs and of course the more famous 1980 re-make.  It Came From Outer Space (1953) -  “Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space.” An alien spaceship crash lands in the Arizona desert and people start acting strange. More Cold War paranoia, by director Jack Warner. Originally in 3D but shown here in boring 2D. Doctor X (1932) -  “Dr X will build a creature.” Doctor Xavier doesn't actually build a creature (Frank N Further does tho), in this pre-code color film by Michael Curtiz, who later directed Bogart again in Casablanca (1942).   “See androids fightingBrad and JanetAnne Francis stars inForbidden Planet…”Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohAt the late nightDouble Feature picture show”The Day of the Triffids (1963) - “And I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills.” Or as Tony Sokol put it,  "Vegetarians eat vegetables. Humanitarians, like Doctor X, eat humans. Triffids are vegetables that eat humans, vegetarian or not." So don't look up at meteor showers, or you'll wake up all "28 Days Later." Freddie Francis co-directs. Curse of the Demon aka Night of the Demon (1957) - “Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes, and passing them used lots of skills.” Jacques Tourneur, of Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943) fame, directs this British demonic chiller. A special shout-out to RKO Radio Pictures. We have our biggest Spotify playlist EVER, with over 100 songs.

Farewell to the Master and Journey to the World) is a 1951 American science fiction film from 20th Century Fox, produced by Julian Blaustein and directed by Robert Wise. The film stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier and Lock Martin. The screenplay was written by Edmund H. North, based on the 1940 science fiction short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, and the film score was composed by Bernard Herrmann.[4] Set in the Cold War during the early stages of the nuclear arms race, the film's storyline involves a humanoid alien visitor who comes to Earth, accompanied by a powerful robot, to deliver an important message that will affect the entire human race. In 1995, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."   A Trip to the Moon by George Méliès (1902): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFtR9bQupak&ab_channel=UnitedGlobalPictures

We're back at it, with another pop culture classic episode!! This is the second of three pop culture classic episodes, and probably, we all agree, that it is the best of all three movies that we took a look back onto. Again, we are staying in the year of 1951! We're of course talking about the original, The Day The Earth Stood Still! Keanu Reeves might be amazing, but we're talking about the original Klaatu played by Michael Rennie! The Day The Earth Stood Still, tells the story of the alien, Klaatu, and his "giant" robot, GORT, visiting Earth. Of course, this is not just a normal visit to a different planet, as they come with a message. Earthlings now have the power of nuclear weapons, and this is something that could threaten the rest of the universe. Because of this, Klaatu and GORT come to Earth to tell their leaders, change your ways, or you will be decimated! This movie is STILL relevant for what is going on in the world, still, today.  SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android |  Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think!Leave us a voicemail at 970-573-6148Send us feedback and/or MP3's to outsidethelongbox@gmail.comFollow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube!Support the podcast on Patreon!Credit - Doyle Daniels, Juan Muro, Gabe Llanas, Tim Huskey

“Klaatu barada nikto!”

One of our favorite movies, “The Day The Earth Stood Still” tells a cautionary tale in a time of the Cold War and rapidly advancing technology.  Expertly directed by Robert Wise and starring the perfectly cast Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlow, Sam Jaffe and Billy Gray, this is a film with multiple layers of meaning and nuance. It’s a straight-forward sci-fi tale with a flying saucer, a superior alien race, and an invulnerable all powerful robot. It’s also a tale of the possibility of humankind's redemption in the face of a higher power. Or is it a tale of the origin of the human race on Earth. Or is it… well, you’ll see. There’s so much to discuss in this film. And let’s not forget the music, in what may be Bernard Herrmann’s best score, but which certainly is one of his best, he utilizes two Theramins for the first time in film and the score sets a standard for sci-fi scores that will be followed for decades after. We’re considering a Bernard Herrmann festival. So keep your eye out for that soon.  We truly love this film and hopefully that comes through in the show. Enjoy!

What do you get when you combine Mario Bava, Tudor Gates, the Woolner Brothers and Antonio Margheriti? You get NAKED...YOU DIE! This is a project that started out as a Woolner production to be directed by Bava but ended up eventually being made by Margheriti. According to Tim Lucas the Gates script remained intact but he faults the film for not being as well crafted a film as Bava would have directed. He may have a point but the joys of this film shine through regardless of any possible 'what ifs'. John Hudson joins me again to dig into this Margheriti thriller - or is it a giallo? There certainly are black gloves and a number of beautiful young ladies meet an early death. There is a semi-effective police investigation and an ersatz Nancy Drew sneaking around trying to solve the murders taking place on the gorgeous, sun dappled campus of an all girl's college. There are half a dozen possible killers with a multitude of potential motives. There are secretive sexual liaisons, hidden homosexual relationships, leering criminal habits, odd exercise regimens and even some strange vanities that point toward likely guilt. So, the film has a number of the classic elements that would make this a giallo, I guess. But which of these clues are more than simply suspicious and which ones will lead to the serial murderer in the school? If you've ever watched an Italian mystery you know that just following the breadcrumbs might not get you anywhere but this one plays fair. Mostly. Mr. Hudson and I lounge poolside with the young girls of St. Hilda's College, skulk around the Bughouse with Professor Andre, shake our fingers at the local Peeping Tom and fall in love with the wonderful character of Jill as she uses her new walkie-talkies to put herself in danger - or try to solve the crimes. Michael Rennie may be the cop in charge but it's Jill that eavesdrops her way into our hearts! We do take a couple of short unrelated side roads during this episode and I do apologize for the derision I heap on Marky Mark. I promise not to do that again! If you have any comments about the show or suggestions for future Margheriti films to cover we can be reached at thebloodypit@gmail.com or on the Facebook page.
