As a surprise, David's recorded a cover version of one of Joe's favourite songs - Roachford's Only To Be With You. They take a listen to it so Joe can tell him what he thinks and to seal the deal, David also plays him some of it live on his guitar. Joe seems to like it but David can't quite work out if he's being truthful - and he doesn't get a great reaction when he offers to record a whole album for him. They then wonder if Roachford would be up for a collaboration and consider sending the track to him to find out. Finally, the idea of having singing lessons comes up and they hatch a plan to invite someone onto the pod to teach them both. It's the 2nd round in the Battle of The Chatabands when David, Joe and music producer Steve Baker score three songs out of 10. David is feeling really uncomfortable in his role as a music reviewer. Steve kicks off by telling Joe that Roachford is playing in Brighton. They listen to each song in turn giving their opinion on each one. Joe thinks the first song is grungy, Steve thinks it has high energy while David struggles to review it as feels like a pratt. Joe thinks he loves the 2nd song. David tries to talk him out of liking it despite liking it himself and it reminding him of Biff Bang Pow. Steve agrees with Joe. Scores on the doors Joe gives 7.5, David gives an 8, Steve also gives an 8. David decides he's a punk as the final song sounds like the Pogues. Steve enjoyed it and Joe imagines listening to it in a seafaring pub in Ventnor. Steve reads out the final scores. Which one will be going through to the final ? They talk about being a music reviewer and Joe confesses he used to buy copies of Melody Maker to appear cool. Simon tells them about his career and early life in the music industry when he used to put on gigs with Ricky Gervais. As expected, the chat turns to The Cure and Simon's book. Simon admits he's never actually met Robert Smith. They swap stories about the music industry. He tells them the artist formerly known as Prince used to be really good at basket ball. Joining me today is Austrian drummer Philipp Groyssboeck better known as Phil G. Phil has lived in London for the last 20 years and has gained a quite remarakable CV of wonderful artists synonymous with the 1980'S including names such as Go West, Mike and The Mechanics, Roachford, T'pau, Taylor Dayne, Chris DeBurgh, Nik Kershaw, Paul Young and many others. Join Phil and myself as we pick through some of the highlights of his career so far from his childhood in Austria in his parents bakery, through to playing drums with the Austrian military band whilst on National Service, Being Terry Bozzio's Drum tech for 2 weeks to performing with Mike & The Mechanics at the Isle Of White Festival in 2016. Phil also tells about his drums of choice, hand made in Austria, these are called Alto Beat Drums, and if you have ever been lucky enough to hear Phil play, then you will know exactly how good they sound and look! Many thanks to Phil for giving up the time from his insane schedule! it was a lot of fun! www.philippg.com www.alto-beat.com

We have another excellent twofer up this week with two decorated artists. First is Andrew Roachford! In the US, he's primarily remembered for his 1989 hit "Cuddly Toy" which still slaps today, but did you know he's an MBE back in England and one of their biggest selling artists? Over the years, whether fronting his band Roachford, or singing with Mike + the Mechanics, or doing his own solo work, he's gone from strength to strength. Next month he goes on a UK Tour celebrating his entire body of work, including his latest album Twice in a Lifetime, as well as performing Christmas classics. Then we hear from celebrated singer/songwriter/producer Teddy Geiger. After being labeled the next big thing in the mid-2000s and having success with hits like "For You I Will", Teddy mostly retreated to the comfort of the studio. Eventually she came out as trans in 2017 which is also around the time her career exploded thanks to award winning collaborations with artists like Shawn Mendes and 5 Seconds of Summer. She just released her latest solo album, Teresa, which is very much a studio creation and shows what she's into these days. We discussed the whole amazing journey. Also, do check her out on social media. Thanks to Acantha for allowing me to play extracts from three of her most recent tracks alongside our conversation.Don't forget the Quincy Jones quote that sums up why I do this: "Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing."Support the showThanks for listening to Harmonious World. Please rate and review wherever you find your podcasts - it really helps.Follow me on instagram.com/hilseabrookFollow me on facebook.com/HilarySeabrookFreelanceWriterFollow me on twitter.com/hilaryrwriter

Michael shares why he continues to practice playing his guitar everyday. The importance of maintaining healthy relationships with the people you work with. The biggest hurdle in his journey. Guest Links Michael Dolce Music Website Michael Dolce Music Instagram Guitar Teaching Resources Mentioned Free Guitar E-book Resources Today's Guest Michael Dolce was heavily influenced by his dad, strumming and singing Italian folk songs and the odd country tune of guitar at the age of six. At 15, he left school to pursue a trade as a cabinet maker. But he still retained his passion for guitar by playing with local cover bands. At the age of 20, Michael decided to give up his trade to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time guitarist.  An opportunity arose in 1991 when local singer songwriter Hugh Wilson appeared on the popular television show ‘Starsearch' and won the series. Hugh and manager Glenn Wheatley approached Michael to join him in his band. This led to an amazing nine months of recording of three singles, an album, recording film clips and extensive touring. Over the next 30 years, Michael further established himself with a solid career as a session guitarist by playing and recording for many Top 10 National and International artists. His playing credits today include the TV show The Voice (Australia), Delta Goodrem, Keith Urban, Lionel Richie, Seal, Roachford, Mica Paris and more.  Today's Sponsor Musicnotes for Education Teachers and students everywhere deserve a sheet music experience that impresses, and that's precisely what you get from Musicnotes.com, the largest online retailer of quality sheet music! Carmen Smith, originally from western Sydney, is a singer songwriter and performer who has also worked, toured and written extensively with some of Australia's best artists. Her first experience as a backing vocalist came in 2004 with Guy Sebastian and his first nationwide tour. Since that time Carmen has performed and toured with Diesel (support act), Jessica Mauboy, Stan Walker, Diana Rouvas, Ricki Lee, Rahsaan Patterson, Roachford,  Tina Arena and many others.  Carmen joined the cast of The Voice in 2012 and became the first contestant ever to be disqualified from the show for "Breaking the spirit of the rules" by appearing in one of Guy Sebastian's music video's.  But no big deal. That experience actually raised her profile quiet a bit and from that has gone on to release more solo music which included one of the coolest music videos ive ever seen, and she's continued to tour and perform with the best in Australia as one of the most sort after voices in the game.    Episode recorded 09/04/2020.   Episode music: "They Dont Know Me" by Carmen Smith.   https://www.facebook.com/CarmenSmithMusic/   https://www.instagram.com/carmensmithmusic/?hl=en   https://www.youtube.com/user/CarmenSmithMusic   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Click here to securely donate to The Gig Life Podcast. In this week's episode, RBP's self-styled "power trio" pay tribute to the late Charlie Gillett, without whose seminal 1970 book The Sound Of The City Rock's Backpages probably wouldn't exist. It is a decade since we lost Charlie – one of the first RBP writers to come on board, back in 2000 – so we wanted to do justice to the enduring influence of The Sound, as well as to his wonderful "Honky Tonk" radio show, his Oval Records label and his passionate championing of African and other "world" music genres. Two clips from Bill Brewster's 1999 audio interview with Charlie prompt reflection and reminiscence from Mark & Barney, as does a Record Mirror piece in which Charlie describes the infamous 1970 press junket that took 134 UK rock journalists to New York to watch the little-known Brinsley Schwarz play Bill Graham's Fillmore East. From there, we segue neatly into a clip from Cliff White's 1978 audio interview with Cajun "swamp-pop" star Johnnie Allan, whose immortal 1971 cover of Chuck Berry's 'Promised Land' – featured on Charlie's 1974 compilation Another Saturday Night – made Oval Records beloved of a generation of rootsy UK pub rockers. Mark, Barney & Jasper wax lyrical about the wonders of 'Promised Land', and about Cajun music in general, before Mark guides through his weekly library highlights. Among the latter are pieces about "Peter No-One" of Herman's Hermits, tenor legend Stan Getz and 'Cuddly Toy' boy Roachford. Jasper finishes things off with closing remarks about pieces on Missy Elliott and Clean Bandit.Pieces discussed: Charlie Gillett audio, Charlie Gillett, Tributes to Charlie, 'World' music, Paul Hardcastle, Brinsley Schwarz, The Promised Land, Johnnie Allan audio, Herman's Hermits, Gene Clark, Byron Ferrari, Stan Getz, Digital recording, Eddy Grant, Roachford, Mötley Crüe, John Oswald, Missy Elliott, Clean Bandit and Jack White. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

The dozenth episode of the podcast which asks: were Senser any good at Laser Quest? This episode – another pop-blather behemoth – sees us stepping right out of our comfort zone and looking at an episode from the mid-Nineties. A golden era when, as we all know, the charts were weighed down with young men with guitars and Paddington coats that made us all proud to be British again. The episode we examine, however, sees The Greatest Pop TV Show Ever at the beginning of its death throes as it begins its run of celeb presenters with Tetley Tea Folk-soundalike Mark Owen and Robbie Williams, who is already starting to get on all right-thinking peoples’ tits with his endless mugging. The charts – our precious, beautiful, immaculate charts! – are treated with the utmost distain while we’re constantly reminded of an exclusive premiere of a Madonna video, which is an advert for a film we’ve never heard of. Yes, Blur are on at the beginning, but that’s your Britlot. What follows is a parade of people we thought we’d safely left behind in the Eighties, loads of Euro-acts both good and bad, Alison Moyet being forced to submit to an unrelenting biff-boff beat and a No.1 that left us hankering for the days of Jive Bunny. On the upside, Roachford manages to get through a song without shitting himself (allegedly). Luckily, Al Needham is joined by Neil Kulkarni and Simon Price – who both worked for Melody Maker at the time, and take the opportunity to offer invaluable advice for anyone looking to break into the music press a quarter of a century ago and trade war stories about riding bikes on a dancefloor with the Sugarcubes, finding a message on their answering machine from lead singers threatening to break their legs, apologising for being gingist in the past, and having a potential fight being broken up by Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. This is the first of many from Boston's Dusk Till Done crew and friends. We were lucky to have our very special friend, Mr. Danny Howells, grace our decks for close to 1.5 hours at a recent event. We hope you enjoy as much as we did, and more to follow soon... Bio: Danny is one of the few DJs on the scene today that truly has a style of his own. With his passion for all styles of music and infectious personality, Danny has created a unique, eclectic sound that has established him as one of the most in demand DJs in the world. Danny is one of the hardest working and most dedicated individuals in the business with over 20 years experience and a hectic touring schedule that constantly takes him around the world. He's played in the world's coolest clubs and held residencies at places such as Arc, Ministry of Sound, Twilo, Renaissance, The End, and Bedrock, as well as his own Dig Deeper nights worldwide. With a back catalogue of well received mix albums under his belt, he has previously compiled acclaimed mixes for Global Underground, being the only DJ to contribute to not only the main series with his Miami album, but also the 24:7 and Nu-Breed Series. In addition to this, he also compiled a cd for Azuli's Choice series, as well as albums for Renaissance along with three volumes of his own Nocturnal Frequencies series. As a producer he has been responsible for many stand out tracks, including the timeless Persuasion/Repercussion on Bedrock Records, Breathe on Renaissance Records and Kinkyfunk on Yoshitoshi Records. He also hit the charts in 2004 with the Miami hit Dusk till Dawn, which featured the talents of Dick Trevor and Erire. Danny has also had massive dance-floor success with Deep Dish as "Size DDD" and the Eminem sampling "Nobody Listens To Techno". In more recent years he has been focusing on original productions for his own Dig Deeper label, the likes of which have been licensed to mix albums by artists such as Juan Maclean on his DJ Kicks album, and Cassy for her recent compilation on Cocoon. On the remix front Danny has previously mixed records such as Roachford's "Ride The Storm", Madonna's "Get Together", Marco Bailey's "Smooth Drive", and Bent's "Waiting For You". Other artists that have received the remix treatment include We Deliver, Stryke, International Observer, Robbie Williams, David Morales, BT, Chakra, Coco and Stonebridge, Destiny's Child and many more, including most recently Felix Da Housecat's purple tribute, "We All Wanna Be Prince". Building on his discography of original productions is a major priority for Danny, as his Dig Deeper label enters it's third year. Danny has come a long way since his early beginnings in his hometown of Hastings, though his complete love of all music remains the same. Danny is a DJ with a broad musical taste who likes anything from jazz to rock, to pop and anything a bit bizarre. He likes to champion his own special tracks and records that nobody else has latched on to and has a way of combining cutting edge grooves with crowd pleasing dynamics that enable him to connect with his audience making him one of the hottest DJs in the world.
