For the series finale, we go back to the Fort. Join us as we bring you the sights and sounds we experienced at Fort Adams as Newport Folk returned after a necessary break in 2020, and presented their six-day, half capacity 2021 festival, Folk On. We'll take you from the meaningful first notes sung by the first performers to grace the stage, Resistance Revival Chorus, to one of the last - Lake Street Dive, and their tribute to beloved member of the folk family and former WFUV Program Director, the late Rita Houston. We also hear from Andrew Bird and Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor about their return to performing and paying homage to John Prine, from mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile about the magic of Newport and why it continues to gives him hope, and the kismet journey of Allison Russell organizing and performing during the most talked about set at Folk On, Sunday night's 'Once and Future Sounds', curated by, and featuring women of color, with a very very special guest. We also check in with Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Yola, Newport Executive Director Jay Sweet, and many other artists, fans and members of the Folk family about their experiences at Folk On, their reflections of the past 18 months, and where we are headed. Through it all, the feeling of family and community is ever present, giving us the courage to take tentative steps forward, leaning into the truth and power of music, and the magic that happens when we dream together. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. Executive producers are RJ Bee and Christina Collins. Show Logo and art by Mark Dowd.  The series theme music is "Ruminations Pt. 3 (Afternoon Haze)" by Steven Warwick. Thanks to Billy Glassner of the Newport Festivals Foundation for providing archival audio. So far we've looked at match fixers and bookmakers, religion and populism in India and Pakistan, and national identity in Australia. We've speculated about Saudi and Chinese investment in cricket, unearthed some unlikely stories of Jewish impact on the sport, and uncovered an unexpected benefit of Brexit. So much historical fiction takes place in wartime, but over the last decade or so, WWII has dominated the Christian Historical Fiction genre. I chatted with Lynne Basham Tagawa about her historical series that takes place during the years of the War for Independence. From New England down as far south as the Carolinas, The Russells series takes you through a family saga that will show how and why the patriots and the loyalists fought for king or for a new country "conceived in liberty." Listen in and hear a history lover discuss the passion behind this series! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What if Faith and Fiction Combined to Make History Come Alive? The War for Independence has so many heroes--many of whom were common, ordinary people thrust into an extraordinary situation and proved their mettle when it counted most. Traitors until they won, the patriots fought against governmental oppression and taxation, yes. But they also fought for religious freedom. Lynne Basham Tagawa chronicles the lives of one family through years and locales, focusing on more than hiding spies or winning battles. She shows all sides of the issues--the natives, the patriots, and the loyalists who didn't ask for their new home (or homeland!) to be ravaged by rebellion. This three-book series (so far) also has a novella coming, but I would love to see what Tagawa would do if she continued the saga through the next fight with Britain in the War of 1812. It's such a "forgotten" war in US history that I think it would be brilliant! A Fallen Sparrow by Lynne Basham Tagawa It was all Samuel Adams's fault. Ruth Haynes uses the pen name Honorius when she writes for her father's newspaper. Boston has changed beyond recognition, and her Loyalist views soon get her in trouble. With war looming, what will their family do? Jonathan Russell hides a guilty secret. The Battle of Bunker's Hill sweeps him and his Shenandoah Valley family into the war. The unthinkable happens, and he's forced to deal with both his grief—and his guilt. Lieutenant Robert Shirley is summoned by his godmother and introduced to the Earl of Dartmouth, who charges him to gather intelligence in Boston. He is horrified but must obey. Gritty, realistic, and rich with scriptural truth, this story features Dr. Joseph Warren, Major John André, Henry Knox, and Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton. “A Fallen Sparrow is a riveting read that delves beneath the surface of the American Revolution.” --Vikki Kestell, author of Faith-Filled Fiction You can find more about Lynne on her WEBSITE. "I like to have structure in my songwriting process in order to let chaos rule."Jonathan Russell of The Head and the Heart loves structure. It helps him in his domestic life: he often finds missing bridges in his songs when he's cleaning the house, for example. “I love order,” Russell told me. “Clean kitchen, happy brain.” And he loves using lists to make his day easier. When I asked Russell what kind of writing he does outside of songwriting, his immediate response was simple: “I'm a listmaker."Russell likes structure in his songwriting process too, but not for reasons you might expect. It lets him be chaotic. “Structure lets the chaos loose,” he told me. “As long as I have boundaries set up, I will allow myself to play like a five year old.”  And Russell often gets his best writing done, he says, “When I become aware that I'm anxious.”The Head and the Heart's latest album, out April 29, is called "Every Shade of Blue."

The Head and the Heart - "Virginia (Wind in the Night)" from the 2022 album Every Shade of Blue on Warner. Beloved local band The Head and the Heart return this spring with their fifth full-length, Every Shade of Blue, recorded at Studio Litho here in Seattle, where they made their first two albums back in 2011 and 2013. “It was almost like coming back home,” guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Russell told Consequence of Sound. “We used the same engineer, Shawn Simmons. There was this balance of old and new, being familiar with the studio but bringing somebody much newer in his relationship with us.” On today's Song of the Day, Russell pays tribute to his home state. "Being from Virginia, for me this song represents a long and winding relationship to place – a place that is grounding. I'm often drawing on my life through symbolism as a way into someone else's psyche,” he said via a press statement. “It's part of my search for a deeper connection without having to compare our experiences directly. There is a reason this song has two titles. One is literal and one is symbolic. Not everyone is from Virginia, I know that. But I bet you have walked home and heard the wind in the night.” The Head and the Heart perform two nights – August 12th and 13th – at Marymoor Park. This is an excerpt from episode 96 featuring the last 25 minutes or so of my conversation with the legendary environmentalist, activist, entrepreneur and author, Paul Hawken, plus a brilliant preview performance of The Regeneration Song! This really felt like a crescendo of sorts, as we neared the end of a conversation that delved deep over a few hours. The main episode that went out Monday is an edited version. The middle hour or so will be out next, as a special Extra this Monday. For now, if you want to start with a snapshot, or would just like to hear the end again (like I did), this excerpt is for you. We pick up our conversation where Paul comments on stories being the only thing that change us. We go on to talk about the incredible online tools that have launched with the book, some brilliant stories where politics is being transformed, and what that and other stories in Regeneration tell us about how big change happens via the small. We all count in this. We go out with why Paul feels optimistic about what could be a ‘shocking' few years ahead. You can hear the rest of our conversation in the main episode, ‘Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation' - https://www.regennarration.com/episodes/096-regeneration Title slide pic: Paul Hawken. This feels like a pivotal moment. Four years ago, legendary environmentalist, activist, entrepreneur and author, Paul Hawken, compiled the best-selling book Drawdown, a comprehensive plan for reversing global warming. That book changed the world in many ways. And his new one, the sequel to Drawdown, is creating another big wave. It's called Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation, and just one week out, it's already #6 in the New York Times best-seller list. Regeneration is billed as the first book to describe the burgeoning regeneration movement spreading rapidly around the world. And like Drawdown, it doesn't end at the book. The not-for-profit Regeneration organisation is developing an extraordinary set of online guides and resources, teaching materials and media productions to assist our efforts, whoever and wherever we are. If Drawdown was what-could-be-done, Regeneration is how-to-get-it-done. And that's in a context where we're still going backwards in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, our health, and other critical crises. And, most people in the world remain disengaged. So how do we change this? How do we, as this one generation, engage the majority of humanity and fundamentally shift our collective course? Paul and I recorded our first extended conversation together in a Melbourne warehouse in 2018. Join us again, connecting from the Kimberley to California, for a deeply felt, direct and uplifting conversation on Regeneration. More on Paul and Drawdown: Drawdown was a NYT bestseller, is published in 14 languages, has been used by heads of state, is part of the curriculum on every grade level from 4th grade to MIT graduate school, and is placed in a New Zealand hotel chain alongside the Gideon Bible. Drawdown named the goal. Before the book was published, the goal and word were not mentioned in climate literature. The term drawdown is now in generic use, employed and referred to thousands of times a day, and the book's conclusions became the “bible” for over a trillion dollars of funds managed by numerous financial institutions. Paul Hawken is a bestselling author of eight books that have been published in thirty languages in more than fifty countries and have sold more than two million copies. Hawken is a renowned lecturer who has keynoted conferences and led workshops on the impact of commerce upon the environment, and has consulted with governments and corporations throughout the world. This conversation was recorded on 30 September 2021 (Australian time), with thanks to the team at the Derby Media Aboriginal Corporation. Title slide image: Regeneration book cover. Music: The System, by the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra Tune accompanying the introduction is by Jeremiah Johnson We Can Change the World (The Regeneration Song), by AY Young and Jonathan Russell of The Head & The Heart Get more: A special extra to this episode, where we deep-dive into some of the key themes of Regeneration - https://www.regennarration.com/episodes/096-extra-a-deep-dive-into-regeneration Regeneration, the not-for-profit organisation, including NEXUS and how to get hold of the book - https://regeneration.org/ The video of the preview performance of AY Young's Regeneration anthem featured in the podcast - https://regeneration.org/news/210915-we-can-change-world-regeneration-anthem More on Paul Hawken, including his full catalogue of books - https://paulhawken.com/ To listen to Paul and I speak back in 2018, head to episodes 13 and 14.
