She started her company, Crafter's Companion, while still at university and turned it into a global brand. But as she tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy, success isn't just about strategy - it's about mindset. It's a theme she explores in her latest book, The Six-Minute Entrepreneur, which distills the lessons of her own journey into advice for anyone looking to succeed. In this episode of Ways to Change the World, she reflects on the challenges facing small businesses, what she's learned from Dragon's Den, and why the UK needs to celebrate its entrepreneurs more. Over the course of just 11 months, Sara managed to shed an incredible 91 pounds of fat, completely reversing her type 2 diabetes and significantly lowering her blood pressure. As a result, she was able to come off all of her medications, which is a feat many doctors would consider impossible. But that's not all - Sara's transformation also had a profound impact on her joint pain. She used to struggle with walking, but last week she ran the London Marathon! It's hard to believe that just over a year ago, she was dealing with such debilitating health issues.Throughout her journey, Sara discovered the power of a mostly meat-based diet. As someone who previously didn't eat meat, she was surprised to find that this change in her diet was a game-changer for her health. They have two boys: Oliver and Charlie. We met up at my house a couple of hours after her weekly QVC appearance and we talked about looking in the camera during zoom conversations, being 100% present with whatever you're doing, her early struggles with breastfeeding, and her Dad's questioning as to why she is still working so hard now she has a family. We also talked Strictly! About how she had to learn to let down her guard, and wiggle her bum; how she fitted in her dance training by starting it every day at 6am, much to Aljaz's horror; and how ‘Uncle Aljaz ' has become part of the family. We agreed it's never good to ask people to when they're planning to start a family. And I tried to flog her an idea she'd actually just come up with herself - and I have the proof here on tape, that she told me “I'm in”! In this special one-off episode of the pod, Van Jackson joins a panel hosted at Australian National University's Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, alongside Greg Raymond, Ian Hall, and Yun Jiang. The topic: "Whataboutism" and the China debate. The great American political scientist Seymour Lipset once said, “they that know only one country, know no countries”. This panel addresses the issue of comparisons in our political discourse, and in particular “whataboutism” - the response China critics often make when it is pointed out that other countries have committed egregious actions similar in kind, if not scale, to China. By this, they mean that the comparison raised is a distraction from dealing with China's actions. But this approach arguably sits uneasily with our desires to avoid double standards. This panel of experts will discuss the ethical and political aspects of “whataboutism”, with a focus on China. Speakers: Ian Hall is a Professor in International Relations and the acting Director of the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University. He is also an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute and a co-editor (with Sara Davies) of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. Van Jackson is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington, a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, and a Senior Associate Fellow at the Centre for Strategic Studies in Wellington, New Zealand. Yun Jiang is the inaugural AIIA China Matters Fellow. Prior to this, she was the co-founder and editor of China Neican, and a managing editor of the China Story blog at the Australian Centre on China in the World. Moderator Gregory Raymond is a lecturer in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs researching Southeast Asian politics and foreign relations. He is the author of Thai Military Power: A Culture of Strategic Accommodation (NIAS Press 2018) and the lead author of The United States-Thai Alliance: History, Memory and Current Developments (Routledge, 2021).

One of the great things about recording these podcasts, is that I get to introduce you to highly driven people and today's guest is no different. She is a self-made entrepreneur who can now call herself a "Dragon", as she is part of the extremely popular BBC TV series, Dragon's Den.  Yes, I am chatting to Sara Davies! I love her energy, and her passion and drive for life, all of which she truly does have in abundance. I had the opportunity to catch up with Sara during a break in her packed filming schedule in Manchester.  We chat all things morning routine, 5 am alarms and 5.30 am runs, juggling a multi-million pound company, and exactly what she looks for in an entrepreneur.   All this, whilst also finding time to enjoy her "extra curricular" activities such as filming for Dragons Den, her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing and of course, presenting Morning Live on BBC1. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits.  Head over to IG to watch the visuals of our episode and what we get up to on our Monday Mile. https://www.instagram.com/aimee_fuller/   Filmed and Edited by Tom Mallion

Professor Harman joins the Hayseed Scholar podcast. She starts off discussing with Brent her childhood and growing up on a farm in Buckinghamshire in SE England, her interests and aspirations during that time and the family dynamics regarding politics and who was expected to take over the farm each generation. She had a gap year, then went to Manchester for undergrad and graduate training, got into global public health, political economy, and traveled to Tanzania, and then as she tells it was able to get a job in London at City University after approaching some folks from there when they were hiring, at a BISA, after two gin and tonics. She discusses the burgeoning section and field of global public health and how that slowly grew, but remained a somewhat smaller section even up until ‘the big one', the current pandemic of Covid-19 that spread across the world in 2020. She is a film maker, the first one on this podcast, and her film, Pili, is an amazing accomplishment of a movie that was produced and filmed in Tanzania, about a woman who gets a chance to get a better job/role but is keeping a secret about her HIV-positive status. At the start of 2020 few of us would have recognized the face of the current director general of the World Health Organization. Three months later, and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic he and other senior WHO officials appear on television and online almost daily, exhorting governments around the world to take urgent measures to stop the spread of the virus, advising them on how to do so, and coordinating efforts. To these exhortations governments in Southeast Asia, like their counterparts elsewhere, have a duty to respond. This duty they owe not only to their citizens and neighbours, but also to the international community of states, via a special regulatory regime that has emerged in part out of experiences fighting recent contagions in East and Southeast Asia. In Containing Contagion: The Politics of Disease Outbreaks in Southeast Asia (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019), Sara E. Davies explains how and why a duty to contain contagion at the source or within borders became central to the contemporary politics of disease control. She tracks regulatory changes for the control of contagion worldwide in tandem with the emergence in the 1990s of a new regional regime to respond to disease outbreaks among the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. In ASEAN, she observes, agreement to combat contagious diseases rested on a shared understanding of contagion as a security threat that member states would have to combat in unison rather than apart. Notwithstanding the divergences in capacities and willingness to combat contagion among Southeast Asian states, securitization of disease outbreaks in the 2000s made member states better prepared, overall, to combat it. But it also carried risks of costs to civil liberties and democratic practices that, if anything, are even more pronounced today than they were a decade ago. Sara Davies joins us for a coronavirus pandemic special on New Books in Southeast Asian Studies to talk about health security and political sovereignty; the revised International Health Regulations; experiments with SARS and the avian influenza; surveillance of and reporting on contagious disease in Southeast Asia; democracy, transparency and trust in the wake of outbreaks; how endemic diseases risk being neglected and relatively unfunded in the wake of epidemics; and, the responses of China and Singapore to coronavirus, so far. The worldwide health implications of the coronavirus pandemic are well known and discussed at length. But what are the ramifications for society, as countries grapple with the many dilemmas we face battling the disease's spread? Griffith School of Government and International Relations Professor Sara Davies is urging us to consider these impacts on the wider community, saying it's not just health experts who should be at the decision-making table. Her research and books such as Containing Contagion focus on how humans face immense challenges such as massive disease outbreaks. On this episode of The Gender Card, Sara warns that to ignore the wider societal implications of coronavirus puts at risk the health warnings themselves, as not everyone is in a position to act.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
