Yes, I'm also a student, so anyone who chats with me, we can talk about the pros and cons of going back to school as someone that's been in the workforce for a while, but I definitely have a bias towards a full-time MBA and higher education in general. Let's start with a few general questions about Ross and then we'll get more specific and focused on admissions. Can you give us an overview of Ross' full-time MBA program for listeners who may not be that familiar with it, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:51] Yes. Absolutely. The Ross School of Business is located within the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. We are 2024 national champions. However, back to the Ross MBA program, our key differentiators are our action-based learning principles. So really, many people have heard about MAP. MAP stands for multidisciplinary action projects. This is a quintessential end-of-your-first-year MBA experience where you are consultants with real-world impact. Fortune 500, NGOs, you name it, and you're doing a seven-week project on site and back at Ross with them with real deliverables. It's that pre-internship before the internship. Sometimes you'll also hear of “Midwest nice,” but that really does define our culture. We're a highly collaborative, very inclusive culture, and we want everyone to be highly successful while they're here at Ross, and we do that through very intentional pedagogy within the curriculum as well as within your experiential learning through student clubs, different organizations. We have a number of centers and institutes to support your learning even outside of your classroom experience. And I think the last thing about Ross and our curriculum particularly is the flexibility of it. We have over 110 top-ranked graduate programs at the University of Michigan. First up, Alex chooses a female engineer with five years of experience and a passion for sports. Her post-MBA goals make sense, and there's a lot to like in the overall profile - but the GRE is 319. This might be enough for her dream target school (Duke/Fuqua) but Alex and Graham debate the notion of her delaying applications to Round 2 and taking one more shot at pushing the score up a few points. This week's second candidate appears to have a very strong profile coupled with great numbers (328/3.73). They are weighing whether to apply this season or next season, and we strongly encourage a few applications for this season. Our final candidate is from North Africa,  and is somewhat of a non-traditional entrepreneur. At 33, they are going to be older than their classmates, but the biggest concern is their undergraduate GPA. We suggest some remedial work, but do think they might have what it takes for some of the European programs they are targeting. In this episode, Luis speaks with Ivan Aragon. A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Ivan moved to Phoenix, Arizona as a child.  He played football at Phoenix Community College where he was selected as Male Student-Athlete of the year his second year. He later transferred to Arizona State University to continue his studies. Following his undergraduate studies he excelled in the mortgage, insurance, and food supply chain industries. A proud DACA recipient, he was admitted to the University of Michigan's MBA program in 2017. While at Michigan Ross, he was elected to be his Section's (cohort) President, and to the Michigan Ross MBA council (Student Government) as VP of Finance, among other club leadership roles.   He has an Associate's in Business from Phoenix Community College, a B.S. in Finance from Arizona State University, and an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Michigan's Latino Alumni Association and as President of the Ross School of Business Alumni's Phoenix Chapter.   Ivan is currently a Residential Mortgage Broker based out of Phoenix, AZ. He is licensed in multiple states. He loves helping people attain homeownership and invest in residential real estate. He hosts the Home Loan MBA Podcast where he discusses the home loan process and interviews real estate professionals. Let’s learn how these two very busy MBA’s managed to start and run a business while attending a demanding MBA program. Actually we’ll also discover how the Michigan Ross MBA program and Zell Lurie Institute helped our guests get Bschool Travel off the ground. Listen in for their fascinating story! Michigan Ross MBA Students Talk About Admissions, Business School Life, and Founding a Company [Show Notes] Both our guests today are members of the Michigan Ross class of 2019 and the co-founders of Bschool Travel, which we’ll learn about in a few minutes. Dale earned his bachelors in mechanical engineering from Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012 and then worked for Caterpillar for five years before coming to Ann Arbor. Dhruv Dhawan graduated from UC Irvine with a BBA and then headed into public accounting for a couple of years followed by a three-year stint as Director of Marketing and Operations for a health supplements company. With that as background, let’s hear about their MBA experience at Ross and the founding of Bschool Travel. Can you tell us a little about your background? Where you grew up? What you like to do for fun? [2:16] Dhruv: I’m originally from Los Angeles, but went to international high school in India before returning to go to UCI. I worked in public accounting for a few years, but decided I wanted some more operational experience so I transitioned to my family business, Health Plus Inc., where I learned a lot. My true passion is travel, and I like to get on a plane whenever I can. Basketball is also a big part of my life. I’m a huge Lakers fan. Dale: I grew up outside of Chicago, I was really involved in sports growing up and engineering-related fields. My dad is an engineer and I followed in his footsteps. I went to Caterpillar to work in product development and innovation which got me interested in being an entrepreneur. My family also has a business so I came to Ross really focused on entrepreneurship. Dhruv and I met during the interview process and said we should start a company, and now we’ve actually done it! What was hardest part for you in the MBA application process? How did you handle that element? [4:46] Dale: I think the hardest part is honing in on your story in the essays, connecting the dots and having the vision for where you want to be afterwards. As an entrepreneur I didn’t know what company I wanted to start and in what industry, but that doesn’t cut it for a story, so I really sat down to think about what industry I would fit and overall what mattered most. Once I did the reflection it was very informative. Dhruv: My answer is similar but different. I had worked in my family business, so had non-traditional experience, and I made it more of a challenge than it needed to be. Since I had already experienced entrepreneurship I really needed to know if it made sense that I want to be an entrepreneur. I had to sit down and reflect, figure out why I wanted an MBA, and what I needed to be successful as an entrepreneur that I didn’t have before. Is Ross meeting your expectations? [7:59] Dhruv: My expectations have been exceeded in every way. I wanted to leave California and maintain a strong network, and the strength of the network is great. The support with our new business has been amazing. Whether it be from customer discovery, or introducing us to students at other schools, or whatever! I mentioned that strategy was an important component for my education, and the strategy classes and professors have been fantastic so far. Dale: I echo everything Dhruv said. Coming into business school I talked to several students. Many were going into traditional career paths. I knew those resources would be available,

Interview with Michigan Ross’ Soojin Kwon and Diana Economy [Show Summary] Soojin Kwon, Managing Director of the Fulltime MBA Program, and Diana Economy, Director of Fulltime Admissions at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, share a wealth of information about the Ross MBA program, admissions process, and how you can be admitted. In recent years Ross has increasingly focused on action-based learning, having students work in teams to solve real business problems for both local and international organizations. It’s no surprise, then, that in the application they are evaluating applicants on how they will thrive in environments such as this – from self-awareness to empathy to the ability to work with a team to arrive at the most equitable solution. Listen in for all you need to know to arm yourself for success at Michigan Ross! Michigan Ross MBA: It’s about REAL, Clear, and Teamwork [Show Notes] Both Soojin Kwon, and Diana Economy are returning guests to AST. I’m thrilled to have them back so that we can learn more about the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business MBA program. For those listeners who aren’t that familiar with Ross’ program, can you give an overview of it, focusing on its differentiators? [1:21] Soojin: There are three we like to highlight. You learn best by doing and there isn’t a better place to get your MBA than Michigan Ross. Our portfolio of action-based learning opportunities is second to none. In addition to MAP (more on this later) we have a whole portfolio of subjects that people can do under the umbrella of REAL – Ross Experiences in Action Learning. Go Blue Go Anywhere – that is our mantra. If you come here you can go anywhere – geographically, industry-wise, career-wise. Everything is your opportunity having the Michigan brand and network behind you. Ann Arbor provides the opportunity to be part of a tight-knit community. More than 90% of students come from outside of Michigan so they don’t have a pre-existing network, so the focus of their experience is their MBA and their classmates. Ross appointed a new dean, Dean Scott DaRue approximately two years ago. He believes that MBA students should experience four things while in b-school: Start, Advise, Lead, and Invest in real-world businesses. He proudly announced at the AIGAC conference in June that Ross students in this year’s entering class will be able to perform all four functions. When do Ross students do all that? [3:10] Soojin: Some of those things are co-curricular experiences. Some are through coursework like MAP, which I’ll talk about in a second, but some of them are parallel to the academic experience. For Start, they can get seed money for startups from our Dare to Dream grant money funded through our Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. They can get advisory support for their startup ideas through our entrepreneurs in residence program, and they can learn how to start a business through our business development seminars. Students can do all these things at any time during their MBA program. For Advise, all MBA 1s in the last quarter of their first year do MAP (Multidisciplinary Action Project), which are projects that can be anywhere around the world and in any industry, working on business challenges that existing organizations have that students help solve over seven weeks fulltime. For Invest, students can help manage one of our seven student-led investment funds that total over $10M in assets, ranging from social venture to early seed to commercialization to real estate. There’s a real wide range that students can become involved in outside of their classes with advisors in each area. The new element is Lead, which is through our Living Business Learning Experience, and the students can do this in their second year. It puts students in an existing business unit of a company like Shinola or Ford, and they work through the semester on some aspect of their business.

"We want you to be involved." Thank you to Jon Fuller, Senior Associate Director Admissions, and Diana Economy, Associate Director of Admissions at Michigan Ross for an outstanding Q&A! In the following excerpt you’ll read about Ross’s strengths and what distinguishes Ross from other top MBA programs: Linda Abraham:  "How is Ross' program different from other top programs? Is there anything in particular?" Now, I know that you know the Ross program best, so let me rephrase that question if I could and say "What do you think Ross is particularly strong at?" Jon Fuller: Not that we're a one-trick pony with the action-based learning component, but that is definitely something that I think is a big differentiating factor to our students’ experience within our program; is that, again, through MAP and a lot of other experiences, such as through our institutes and centers, through student life experience, and the clubs and organizations that our students lead and develop, there are many, many opportunities to take theory and put it into practice, and to put it in practice in a context that actually has significant impact and significant weight to it. ...Our philosophy is "Why should you wait until you graduate from your MBA program to actually try some of these things out, to try some of these learnings out and apply them to the real world?" There’s a safety net in some ways for you to test yourself, to test your boundaries, and to experiment, but at the same time, there are real stakes involved... ... I'm always struck by is the engagement of our student body in terms of actually making the Ross experience their own, and really shaping and having a significant role and actually providing direction to the school. We have over seventy different student organizations and clubs. All of them are student run. Of course, there may be a faculty advisor and there is staff support to these organizations, but the students have ultimate say in terms of what the programming is...We tell people, we want you to be involved...and if you don't see something here that exists that is of interest to you, then make it happen. ...So students are very active. It is not a passive existence, or a passive experience that they have, and I think that's a real distinguishing feature to the extent that that happens, at the Ross school. Diana Economy: I think our alumni base is very much a distinguishing factor. I noticed that both as a student as well as an alum. I think to further Jon's point about the connection that students have with one another through their experience here and co-creating this great experience that develops these very strong bonds that they continue on as alum. I think our alumni feel very strongly about giving back. Of course, University of Michigan's got one of the largest living alumni bases anywhere. And as a Ross graduate, you're not just a part of the Ross school of business graduate community; you're part of a larger University of Michigan community. You could pick up the phone anywhere in the world and call somebody who was a law school alum or an undergraduate alum or a med school alum, and you're part of that broader network. Which of course, when you go to business school, you're not just preparing for that first job out of business school, but essentially for your whole career.
