Mastering Self-Control: 3 Rules You Need Today! Ever feel like your goals are within reach, but self-discipline keeps slipping away? In this episode, I've brought together some of the most powerful voices in personal development—Eric Thomas, Monica Aldama, Tim Grover, Ben Newman, Ryan Holiday, and Sam Acho—to tackle the fundamental rules for self-control. Self-discipline isn't something you're born with; it's a skill you build daily. So together, we're laying out three game-changing rules to help you focus, stay consistent, and reach the next level. First, I share a rule that transformed my productivity: identifying and eliminating “discipline stealers.” Whether it's getting lost in sports highlights or scrolling on social media, these little distractions drain our focus and stop us from moving forward. When you understand what's stealing your focus, you can cut it out and start making real progress. Eric Thomas digs into the power of “getting real” with yourself and committing to self-discipline. He shares how he had to face his own habits head-on to become the success he is today. Ben Newman talks about sacrifice and why real discipline often means choosing the harder path when the easy one is right in front of you. Tim Grover breaks down the mindset that made legends like Kobe and Michael the best in the world—the relentless pursuit of self-mastery and mental toughness. The next rule is about making discipline a habit by scheduling your priorities. From the outside, it might look like I've got ironclad self-discipline, but the truth is, I've built routines that keep me focused and performing at my best. Monica Aldama talks about her experience coaching college athletes and the importance of structure and accountability in keeping them focused on their goals. Sam Acho emphasizes that discipline isn't just about scheduling work; it's about making time for relationships and personal growth too. Finally, it's all about keeping the promises you make to yourself. Ryan Holiday shares insights on how small, consistent actions are the foundation of self-mastery. Start with keeping small promises—whether it's completing your morning workout or shutting off distractions at work—and let those victories build up your self-control over time. Key Takeaways: - Identify Your Distractions: Recognize and eliminate the things that drain your focus, so you stay on track. - Schedule Your Priorities: Treat self-discipline like a muscle and build routines that make high performance natural. - Keep Promises to Yourself: Start with small promises and let them grow into powerful habits of self-control. This episode is your roadmap for developing self-discipline that sticks. If you're ready to cut out distractions, build routines that support your goals, and stay true to your vision, these three rules—and the wisdom from these guests—will set you up for success. Take action on these rules, learn from these legends, and start unlocking your full potential with the discipline to achieve your biggest dreams! This week, you're going to hear some incredible lessons on how to build a WINNING TEAM, LEADERSHIP, CULTURE, and DISCIPLINE from one of the legends in her chosen profession. I consider my guest one of the ALL TIME GREATEST coaches in the history of college sports! Period. Her chosen sport is COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING. Cheerleading has changed in recent years.  For many participants, long gone are the days of standing on the sidelines encouraging fans to show their spirit.  Competitive cheerleading at a high level requires as much PERSEVERANCE, PRACTICE, and DEDICATION as much as any other athletic undertaking. Nobody understands this better than MONICA ALDAMA who has set the STANDARD for two decades.  She coaches the Navarro College team, located south of Dallas and considered one of the best programs in the country.   During her tenure, the Bulldogs have won 14 Junior College Division National Championships and five Grand National Titles.  Yes 14 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! In 2020, Monica was featured in "Cheer," a Netflix docuseries that focused on the 2019 Navarro College coed cheerleading team.  It captivated viewers and was a huge boost in introducing the sport to a wide audience.  Since that time, she has made several TV appearances including a turn on "Dancing with the Stars," and written FULL OUT, an inspirational guide on LEADERSHIP and developing a CHAMPIONSHIP MINDSET.  So, what lessons can a competitive cheerleading coach teach you? The answer is A LOT! No matter what you do in life, Monica is going to download actionable advice on a wide range of topics, including… …the importance of COMPASSIONATE DISCIPLINE. …what to look for in RECRUITS when you're building a team. …giving DIRECT FEEDBACK. …building a great culture by leading with RESPECT and INSTILLING BELIEF in people. …avoiding burnout and dealing with PRESSURE. …the RIGHT WAY TO PRACTICE. This week's episode really “sticks the landing” with tons of great advice you can use. Monica Aldama is on the mat and practice is about to begin.

Monica Aldama is the cheerleading coach at Navarro College. She is one of the most successful athletic coaches in the country, having led Navarro to 14 national championships. She and her team are the subject of a hit Netflix show called Cheer which is now entering its second season. She has a new book out which is entitled: Full Out: Lessons in Life and Leadership from America's Favorite Coach   Some interesting insights from this episode: Her lifelong dream was to become a Wall Street banker but something happened along the way She has learned how to acquire talent based not just on raw skills but on potential, knowing that some kids will grow and develop during the program To win championships, you have to have a championship culture which is as much about attitude as it is work ethic and commitment. Coaching these kids was not just about winning championships but about providing structure and discipline they would need during the program and throughout life. To become an effective leader, she had to learn to adjust her communication style and coaching approach based on how different kids respond. She encourages failure with her team. If you don't fail, you don't grow, and you become complacent.  “Excellence is carrying yourself in the way of a champion in all areas of your life.”   Show Notes Book: Full Out: Lessons in Life and Leadership from America's Favorite Coach

To begin the episode, Nathan and Johanna acknowledge the current actions of two groups: 1) the very brave University of Michigan graduate students @geo3550 who are currently striking for a safe and just Covid response from the university and for the school to defund campus police, and 2) the Scholar Strike of college and university educators (Nov. 8-9 in the US and Nov. 9-10 in Canada), inspired by the athlete-activism (!) of the WNBA, NBA, and others against systemic racism and police brutality. Solidarity to everyone involved as they fight for the most important issues of our lifetime! For this episode, Johanna and Nathan are joined by the wonderful Amanda Mull, a writer on health in all its varieties for The Atlantic. We chat about the Netflix docuseries Cheer and Amanda's incisive piece in The Atlantic about it, “Cheer is Built on a Pyramid of Broken Bodies.” Amanda shares with us her MO and approach to selecting, researching, and writing her pieces, and elaborates on why she “felt pranked” when she started watching Cheer. We discuss the series' portrayal of the horrific incidents of physical harm and emotional damage throughout the show (back injuries, concussions, etc.) and how coach Monica Aldama's self-presentation as the ‘parental figure' to athletes with vulnerable backgrounds ultimately reinforces her abusive coaching tactics. Amanda insightfully explains how, in cheerleading and football (and other sports in American culture), athletes' suffering is glorified as an act of virtue that pays off not only for athletes, but for American society as well. In the second half of the episode, we discuss the role that the NCAA could play in (gasp!) mitigating the violent harm by making cheerleading an NCAA sport, and explore how to hold Aldama accountable for her abusive tactics as a female coach. Amanda shares her take on the narrative that Netflix aimed to present to viewers in the series, as well as the reasons why the sports media complex such as with ESPN refuses to see the obvious way that harm and abuse are foundational to American sports culture. Finally, we discuss with Amanda her background as a lifelong college football fan and how she grapples with her fandom and critical perspective of the sport. Amanda Mull is a writer for The Atlantic covering health from a wide variety of perspectives, such as beauty, nutrition, work-life habits, and sports. Her work has appeared in Racked, Rolling Stone, Elle, Glamour, and others. She can be found on Twitter @amandamull. Check out one of her more recent pieces on college football that we mention, “College Football's Great Unraveling.” And don't forget about our most recent piece for Jacobin (which we mention in the episode) on harm and the anti-Communist propaganda in recent portrayals of abuse in US gymnastics, “Red-Scare Rhetoric Isn't Gone From Histories of American Sport.” For a transcription of this episode, please click here. (Credit @punkademic) After listening to the episode, check out our most recent pieces: “Red-Scare Rhetoric Isn't Gone From Histories of American Sport” in Jacobin Magazine "Canceling the College-Football Season Isn't Enough" published in The Chronicle of Higher Education. “'We are being gaslit': College football and Covid-19 are imperiling athletes” in The Guardian “Canceling the college football season is about union busting, not health” also in The Guardian __________________________________________________________________________ As always, please like, share, and rate us on your favorite podcast app, and give follow us on Twitter or Instagram. @Derekcrim @JohannaMellis @Nkalamb @EndofSportPod www.TheEndofSport.com

The little sister of Last Chance U? Only the cheer community will watch it? I mean where is Corsicana, Texas anyways? If some thought the Netflix series, “Cheer” wasn't going to be successful, think again. Monica Aldama is a hometown success story. Born and raised in Corsicana, she attended the UT business school and was well on her way to Wall Street. But, as I learned during the time together, she instead took over the Navarro College Cheer program at the age of 22. She even had some athletes older than her during that opening season. Her first competition consisted of driving a 14-passenger van to Downtown Dallas. Flash forward 25 years, and flights to Daytona Beach to compete at Nationals on the regular is quite the contrast. With over 660K Instagram followers, her life is much different than when we first ran a fundraiser for their national championship rings in 2018. However, her mat success has been constant throughout her tenure and this is the focus of our time. Why? Why is she so successful? Why are certain coaches so successful? Most seasons only end with one winner and how do we make sure it's us? There's not a magic formula or answer to the question, but there's many nuggets of gold to find in this week's #eTSChalkTalk, “Cheer Edition.”
