Ep 101 Description: “If we can learn to tolerate our feelings of emotional pain, grief, loss, sadness, and anxiety, we open up the possibility of being able to feel more pleasure. And it starts with the body.” —Dr. Nan Wise Pleasure is a fundamental part of the human experience that enhances well-being and quality of life. The ability to experience joy and satisfaction promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and strengthens our relationships and connections with others. Yet modern lifestyles often leave little time for leisure, play, and mindfulness of sensations in our own bodies. This week's episode explores the neuroscience of pleasure and how stress impacts our ability to experience joy with our expert guest, Dr. Nan Wise. Why Good Sex Matters author, Dr. Wise, is a certified sex therapist, relationship specialist, and neuroscience researcher. Her studies help address the gaps in literature regarding the neural basis of human sexuality. Dr. Nan is passionate about teaching her clients techniques to manage stress and experience more pleasure in their daily lives and relationships. Listen in as Debra and Dr. Wise offer strategies to regulate the nervous system and access pleasure pathways in the brain and tools pregnant women can use to prepare emotionally for birth. They also delve into how stress can "hijack" brain chemistry and impact mental health, the brain's core emotional systems, the importance of self-care for mothers, and redefining sexuality beyond intercourse to embrace embodiment and connection. During this episode with Dr. Nan Wise, who is a neuroscientist, sex therapist, and relationship counselor you will learn how to better understand yourself and your partner and how you can each regulate your nervous systems. In addition, other topics that are addressed include: Learning how to radically accept where you are as an individual and a couple. Understand the core emotional systems: seeking system; care system; play system; lust system. Defensive systems: fear system; rage system; panic/grief/sadness. Understanding core differences between you and your partner and different ways of handling emotions. Build bridges between the differences. Most people argue over “matters of opinion”. Get the understandable part of your differences and maintain a nonjudgmental attitude. The negative impact of not learning how to take an effective stance for what you “need and want” in your relationship. Learn how to ask for what you want and need “like a calm broken record”. We need to learn how to regulate ourselves and shift out of flight, fight, or freeze mode. Elongating exhalation-make the exhale longer then the inhale and this will help rebalance our core emotions out of a defense system. Calming our nervous system to co-regulate with our partner. Learn how to tune into the body channel. Everyone feels their embodied emotions. Learn how to pay attention to the core sensations in your body. Understanding cognitively infused emotions. The importance of changing patterns to feel safe in our relationships because we're not understanding each other. Learn how to move from disconnection to connection by syncing your breath to entrain. Eye contact, listening to a partners voice or speaking in a calm way can help with co-regulation and promote connection. The benefit of heart coherence and giving your partner the benefit of the doubt and not assuming. Learning how to do deep/active listening and “take a session”. The listener says “What I hear you saying is_____. Is that correct? Is there more?” We “project” onto each other and may not understand that we are doing that. There are different kinds of marriages and the most challenging times can be when we have children and when the children leave home. How can you create a “sustainable” relationship? Relationships break down because they're pointing out to us how we need to grow as human beings. Give yourself and your partner the benefit of the doubt, learn how to reset your nervous system, and take 100% responsibility for what “you” are creating in your relationship. This episode is intended to continue the conversation we had on #359 with Gigi Engle. You asked us to host a neuroscientist to discuss what's happening in the brain during compulsive use of sex and porn, and repeat guest Dr. Nan Wise is the perfect fit for this discussion. Dr. Nan shares her definition of sex and porn addiction and whether or not it's real (spoiler alert - she says it's VERY real for some people). She explains what's happening in the brain when someone starts to consume sex and porn compulsively, as well as when it turns into an addiction. She takes this even further by explaining how to know if your own behavior has become compulsive and some of the best modalities for healing or reclaiming your sexuality, as well as what to do if you suspect your partner's behaviors are problematic. About our guest: Nan Wise, Ph.D., is a cognitive neuroscientist, professor, licensed psychotherapist, certified sex therapist, board-certified clinical hypnotherapist, and certified relationship specialist. After almost twenty years in clinical practice, she became driven to understand how the brain creates moods and behaviors in relation to sex and other aspects of human experience. Having returned to academia to pursue a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience, she is now a cognitive neuroscience researcher at Rutgers University-Newark. She is the author of the book Why Good Sex Matters and has contributed her expert opinion to outlets such as National Geographic, The Atlantic, Time, Glamour, Women's Health Magazine, The Washington Post, HuffPost, Romper, and Bustle. Dr. Nan Wise is a certified sex therapist, relationship specialist, neuroscience researcher, and author of Why Good Sex Matters: Understanding the Neuroscience of Pleasure for a Smarter, Happier, and More Purpose-Filled Life. Her research has addressed gaps in the literature regarding the neural basis of human sexuality and garnered international attention. Her clinical approach highlights the critical role our evolutionarily wired-in “core” emotions play in physical and mental well-being. Imbalances in these core emotions contribute to anxiety, depression, stress-related disorders, and sexual dysfunction, and anhedonia, or the inability to experience pleasure. This pleasure crisis is evidenced by soaring epidemics of mood disorders, stress-related illnesses, and a widespread sexual recession. Dr. Nan has appeared on The Today Show and contributed her expert opinion to many media outlets and she writes regularly for Psychology Today and Glamour. In this episode Dr Nan & Cyndi Darnell dig into her research on pleasure and the brain and we explore the relationship between how complex feelings can hijack pleasure - and what we can do to create more pleasure in our lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carlos-roberto-gutierrez/message

Welcome to episode 226 of the Sexology Podcast! Today I'm delighted to welcome Dr. Nan Wise to the podcast. In this episode, Dr. Nan talks to me about her book, Why Good Sex Matters, how you can learn to access your pleasure and analyzing the difference between sexual stimulation and satisfaction. Dr. Nan Wise is a certified sex therapist, certified relationship specialist, neuroscience researcher, and author of Why Good Sex Matters: Understanding the Neuroscience of Pleasure for a Smarter, Happier, and More Purpose-Filled Life. Driven by the desire to understand how the brain operates to create moods and behaviors, she returned to academia and completed her Ph.D. in 2014. Her dissertation work, Genital stimulation, imagery, and orgasm in women: an fMRI analysis, resulted in three published studies. Her research has addressed gaps in the scientific literature regarding the neural basis of human sexuality, and as a result, garnered international attention. Dr. Nan's clinical approach addresses how the brain/body/mind operates, highlighting the key role that our evolutionarily wired-in, core, embodied emotions play in our physical and mental well-being. Imbalances in these core emotional systems contribute to anxiety, depression, stress-related disorders, and sexual dysfunction--all of which can impair our ability to experience pleasures- in and out of the bedroom. This inability to experience satisfying pleasures-- the state of "anhedonia"- - contributes to what she has called the pleasure crisis, evidenced by soaring epidemics of mood disorders, stress-related illnesses, and a widespread sexual recession. As Dr. Nan teaches, the ability to experience healthy pleasures--those that feel good and are good for us-- is not a luxury, but a necessity for overall well-being. Dr. Nan has discussed the pleasure crisis on The Today Show as well as contributed her expert opinion to outlets such as The BBC, National Geographic, The Atlantic, Time, Women’s Health, The Washington Post, HuffPost, Well + Good, Romper, Bustle, and has a regular column in Glamour, Ask Dr. Nan in which she addresses sexual health and relationship topics. She lives in West Orange, NJ. In this episode, you will hear: How Dr. Nan became interested in this field to write the book Analyzing Anhedonia - The inability to feel pleasure Learning to access your pleasure Why your brain is your ally when improving your sexual pleasure Looking at the difference between accessing pleasure and sexual pleasure Overcoming low desire Why some people are ambivalent towards pleasure Fulfilling your sexual potential The difference between stimulation and satisfaction Find Dr. Nan Wise Online https://askdoctornan.com Free Masterclass https://sexologypodcast.com/masterclass/ If you are interested in booking a video counselling session with Dr. Moali https://oasis2care.com/contact-nazanin-moali-psychologist Podcast Produced by Pete Bailey - http://petebailey.net/audio
This podcast is now the subject of a legal complaint by OM IP Co and the Institute of OM LLC. Before we dive into the story of One Taste, we go back to basics on the female orgasm. What exactly is an orgasm? What's going on in the body and the brain during the process? Why do some women struggle to experience orgasm? And what's the best way to get there? We find out with neuroscientist and sex therapist Dr Nan Wise, author of Why Good Sex Matters: Understanding the Neuroscience of Pleasure for a Smarter, Happier and More Purpose-Filled Life, and social psychologist and psychotherapist Dr Sara Nasserzadeh, co-author of the Orgasm Answer Guide. Presenter: Nastaran Tavakoli-Far Producer: Lucy Burns Editor: Penny Murphy
There's this idea that the female orgasm is a complicated riddle, but for a man with a penis, getting off is easy peasy. Is there really an orgasm gap? And if so — can what's happening in our brains during an orgasm help explain it? To learn more, we talk to neuroscientist Dr. Nan Wise. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of the podcast, I interview Dr. Nan Wise, a cognitive neuroscientist, certified sex therapist, and Associate Research Professor at Rutgers University. Dr. Wise just published a fantastic new book titled "Why Good Sex Matters: Understanding the Neuroscience of Pleasure for a Smarter, Happier, and More Purpose-Filled Life." We cover a wide range of questions and topics, including: What exactly is "pleasure?" Why are we experiencing less pleasure today than we used to? How can we get more pleasure in our sex lives? Is the answer different for men and women? Dr. Wise has conducted neuroscience research on women's orgasms. How does one go about studying this in the lab? Is it challenging to find participants who are willing to masturbate to orgasm in an fMRI machine? (The answer might surprise you!) What are the key things Dr. Wise has learned from the women in her research who were willing to "donate their orgasms to science?" Enjoy, and be sure to check out Dr. Wise's new book Why Good Sex Matters! *** Want to learn more about Sex and Psychology?
