Episode 474 - Lily Iona MacKenzie - Dreaming Myself into Old Age, One Woman's Search for MeaningI don't have hayseed clinging to my trousers, but growing up on a Canadian farm gave me a unique foundation as a writer. I sprouted under cumulous clouds that bloomed everywhere in Alberta's big sky. They were my first creative writing instructors, scudding across the heavenly blue, constantly changing shape: one minute an elephant, bruised and brooding. The next morphing into a rabbit or a castle. These billowing masses gave me a unique view of life on earth. As a girl, I prowled the land, talking to chickens and pigs and lambs, creating scenarios for them. I also tried to make perfume from the wild Alberta roses and captured caterpillars, watching with wonder when they transformed themselves into butterflies. Everything around me seemed infused by nature spirits waiting to be released.I soon realized that all objects are in motion, waiting for stories to illuminate them. The clouds' shifting form also schooled me in the various possibilities open to me as a writer. So did Jack Frost's enchanted creations that enlivened the windows in wintertime, forcing me to view my surroundings as if through a bewitching prism. These early experiences helped me to envision multi-dimensional characters. No wonder magical realism pulses at the heart of my narratives, and my work celebrates the imagination. As an adult, I continue to seek instruction from clouds. Just as they provide the earth with much-needed water, I believe that stories have a similar function, preparing the mind to receive new ideas. Also, conditions inside a cloud are not static—water droplets are constantly forming and re-evaporating. Stories, too, change, depending on who is reading them, each one giving life to its readers.I've published reviews, interviews, short fiction, poetry, travel pieces, essays, and memoir in over 165 American and Canadian venues. Fling!, one of my novels, was published in July 2015 by Pen-L Publishing. Regal House Publishing released Curva Peligrosa, another novel, in September 2017. Pen-L Publishing published Freefall: A Divine Comedy on 1/1/19. The Ripening: A Canadian Girl Grows Up!,  featuring the same main character as in Freefall, came out on October 2021. My poetry collection All This was published in 2011, and a chapbook (No More Kings) was released in March 2020.Shanti Arts Publishing will release my hybrid memoir Dreaming Myself into Old Age: One Woman's Search for Meaning in 2023 as well as my new poetry collection California Dreaming. I also taught writing at the University of San Francisco (USF) for over 30 years and was vice-president of USF's part-time faculty union. I currently teach creative writing at USF's Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning.https://lilyionamackenzie.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Pete came back! This time, we talk about Pete's solo career, but we do talk a little about No More Kings. Pete has released 4 albums and half a dozen singles spanning the last 9 years. We go into his process for production, how his solo stuff alters from No More Kings, and a few nerdy tangents. Oh, and if you listened to the last episode with Pete, you might remember that I tried to set up and interview a Robo Petey, but it didn't work out very well. So for this episode, I interviewed Pete inside a soundproof room inside of a Faraday cage. I am certain that Robo Petey will not find out about it. In the fall of 1975, the children's educational program Schoolhouse Rock! would debut a song about the history of the Thirteen American Colonies titled “No More Kings.” Two decades later, quintessential American indie rock band Pavement would record a version of the song that would eventually appear on the 1996 tribute album Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks. In Episode 47, Pavement's Bob Nastanovich returns to In Loving Recollection to tell the story of how their recording of “No More Kings” came to be.

Today a dream of mine came true. They say never to meet your heroes, but I say you need to find better heroes. I've been listening to No More Kings since my college friend and roommate Mike introduced me to them. NMK has a particular style and sense of humor that just fit perfectly with us. Joining me today is the man behind the band, Pete Mitchell. Join us for a lot of laughs and sincere moments. We talk about the background of the band, some behind the scenes info on various tracks, Dungeons & Dragons, the MCU, misheard lyrics, and more! No More Kings is known for such songs as "Obey the Groove," "Critical Hit," and "Sweep the Leg." NMK is also famous for the music video that accompanies "Sweep the Leg" which gathered the cast of The Karate Kid together long before Cobra Kai. Pete's music has also been featured on the television show Psych and the video game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Colin Marshall sits down in Pasadena with Pete Mitchell, visual artist, game designer, zombie enthusiast, and lead singer and co-founder of the band No More Kings, whose latest album III came out this year. They discuss now as an opportune time to be into zombies; how his mom got him into not just zombie movies but Dungeons & Dragons; the "love letter to the 1980s" he wrote with the first No More Kings album; his early forays into game design, typing in code line-by-line and saving it on a tape drive, later struggling against the limitations of software like Game-Maker; Game-Makerish limitations as the true drivers of art; the experience of growing up in Rhode Island, and who thrives there; being a big fish in a small pond, being a small fish in a big pond, and the appeal regardless of the ultimately more interesting big ponds; the eternal struggle to finish projects, and what we can learn from the examples of such "obsessive" creators as Francis Ford Coppola, Shane Carruth, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jiro Ono; the things you make as diamonds compressed from the coal of your time; the wide reach of No More Kings' "Sweep the Leg" music video, which reunited the cast of The Karate Kid and continues to win the band most of its fans; his anxiety about becoming an "80s pop culture" act; specialized interests and the even more specialized places they overlap as the new stages for subculture; his time in Japan, motivated by the thought that he "can't be the guy who only knows one language"; how, to learn languages or make things, you have to give yourself no choice in the matter; the "electric sense of potential" and "ambient ambition" in a city like Los Angeles, not often felt even in "nicer" places; this city as the most internet-like actual place yet established; and the reasons not to want to go back to Old Economy Steve's economy, or to the days of a powerful cultural mainstream — even if, as in the 80s, that mainstream produced a lot of neat stuff.

It's our inaugural podcast, so we celebrate by discussing the movie that had us leaving the theater practicing our Crane Technique and wondering if we'd ever get the girl. That's right, episode one is all about "The Karate Kid" starring Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita.  Movie: The Karate Kid Year released: 1984 Director: John G. Avildsen Lead Actors:  Ralph Macchio - Danny Larusso Noriyuki "Pat" Morita - Mr. Miyagi Elisabeth Shue - Ali Mills William Zabka - Johnny Lawrence Things of note: Even after more than 25 since the film's release, people still get the reference when you say "Wax on, wax off." Ralph Macchio was 22 years old during the filming. William Zabka directed a music video for the band, "No More Kings." The song was called "Sweep the Leg" and was written about Zabka's character in The Karate Kid. Pat Morita was a stand-up comedian early in his career. Morita's natural accent is American. He faked the Japanese one. The drunk racist on the beach who placed his beer bottles on Mr. Miyagi's truck was played by Larry Drake, best known for his role as the mentally challenged Benny in the TV series "LA Law".
