If you know me, you'll know that I love economic simulation games. I love trading stocks and shares. It feels great when I buy into someone else's company and ride their success to profit. It feels even better when my own company does well and I can take all the gains for myself, because nobody else believed it would do so well. Add to that my love for playing with toy trains and you can see why I'm in love with 18xx games. So allow me, if you will, to take you on a journey of trains, tracks, stations and shares. Might is right in this unconventional board game by the designer who created Root. Whether you choose to be the Chancellor ruling with an iron fist or an Exile striving toward your own Vision, Oath challenges players with its variable goals and ever-shifting map, creating an unusual and fantastical area-control epic. If you like this board game review, give us a rating. We appreciate the support!

Any creative work is built on a lot of conventions - things that we take as granted, the unspoken rules that must be followed. We get a lot of really great games by following design conventions, but some times, in order to innovate we have to break them. Before we try to find the balance between convention and innovation, we talk about Darwin's Journey, Aleph Null, and Rome in a Day. In this week's episode Bob and Natasha look at a couple of games. The first up is Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile. This 2021 release created some interesting opinions when it was first released. It definitely feels like a game designed for a group who enjoys exploring a game to the fullest. Next up Natasha talks about Ready Set Bet a new game from AEG. This is real time betting game. You are placing wagers on different horses as someone is rolling dice and advancing them. And then in the discussion topic Bob and Natasha continue on with the Board Game Shenanigans Top 100 games of all time.

As the Chancellor, I had the people on my side. The Empire was going to thrive and grow and be beautiful. Yet, there were rumours of Exiles stirring in the Provinces and Hinterland, trying their best to claw back control. They were two visionaries, one stomping through the regions, using brute force to exert their influence and letting the wolves lose on anyone who would get in their way, while the other was biding their time in the Salt Flats, enlisting the help of witches and unnatural powers, trying to glean secrets and waiting for the right moment to strike. Both were intent on taking over the Empire, because they both had sworn an Oath by Cole Wehrle from Leder Games. By expanding their wealth and joining in the construction, they gain favor with the king. Players choose from six actions which are always available, but weighted with a constantly shifting array of costs and benefits. Clever players will discover synergies between carefully timed actions and the rewards from constructing civic projects. At the end of the game, the winner is the player who most impressed King Charles. If Walker doesn't want Mark to speak to excess, he really shouldn't be teeing him up by asking about Macross. Or Robotech either, because the difference thereto is a whole discussion unto itself. Of course, Walker is an accomplished troll, willing to return to any subject once raised. Mark has repeatedly been exhorted to not feed trolls, but really, that's just blaming the victim. At this point it's mostly just mutual trolling, like an ouroboros of nonsense.
