Openers: Knarr, Faraway Closers: Ordering games nominated for the IGA and SdJ awards Mark Johnson @MarkEJohnson Mark Jackson @akapastorguy Recently I asked my listeners for more feedback about this old podcast. What I heard back was very encouraging--thanks for that. Most of you just tell me to keep doing what I like & want. Good, I will! Some other comments called back to the All About… episodes I used to do, deep dives into individual games. Others remembered the 100 Great Games series fondly, a collaboration I did with Mark Jackson and Stephen Glenn. More ideas came up, too. I've mulled those over and devised something that should be fun for me and worthwhile for the listeners. I've invited an old friend to join me in discussions about the Spiel des Jahres winner from a particular year. That makes it kind of a deeper dive into that title, but we also talk about the other nominees from that year. Not only that, but the longer list of recommended games, too. Along the way, we briefly mention the winners of the Kennerspiel, Deutscher Spielepreis, and the À La Carte, all notable awards in Germany where the Spiel des Jahres is still the preeminent award for our hobby.     When this podcast is released, we'll be only a week away from hearing the list of nominees and recommended games for this award year, 2024. I'll be very interested in that, however this new, occasional podcast series is about the SdJ in prior years. The award itself goes back to 1979--and I may cover those oldies someday--but for this episode I'm starting with something much closer to our present time. Five years ago seems like a good place to start--recent enough that the games are familiar, but distant enough that most gamers will have had plenty of opportunity to play them, if desired. Future episodes may jump around to other years that interest me, like a goofy time machine. My co-host for this episode is Mark Jackson, a well-known writer about boardgames. He's had multiple websites, is active on social media, is part of the Opinionated Gamers editorial board, a member of the International Gamers Awards panel, and has been on my podcast several times. I'm happy to call him my friend, too. Really, the only downside to this guy is the confusion we generate with our similar identities. Mark & I have similar histories, but not always the same taste in games. Nonetheless, I know I can count on him to appreciate the kind of family strategy boardgames I focus on in this podcast--it's in the opening to every episode! That's what the Spiel des Jahres awards and selection jury are all about, too. It's a great fit.      By setting our Spiel des Jahres Wayback Machine to 2019, Sherman & Peabody Mark & Mark will be going back to when Just One took home the prize over fellow nominees Werewords and L.L.A.M.A. Do you know all of those? How about the list of recommended titles, Belratti, Dizzle, Krass Kacke/Who Did It?, Reef, and Sherlock? We do our best to talk about all of those, while also mentioning that Wingspan won the Kennerspiel & DSP, while Belratti won the À La Carte. Let us know what you think about these games, and the SdJ Wayback Machine itself. Is there a particular year you want us to visit next? With 44 more years to choose from, we're not going hit them all or go in any order. Future episodes will be occasionally interspersed with the “regular” episodes of Boardgames To Go. Very soon we'll have this year's nominees to discuss on our Discord server or elsewhere. I'm looking forward to all of it. -Mark

We teamed up with our pals Raina and Phil from 1 Minute Board Games to take the next step in our gaming relationship: not just play "normal" board games (which we still do plenty of with them) but play ones designed to really dig down deep and get us talking about things that would normally not come up during sessions of Sea Salt & Paper. Listen in to see what we've learned about these experiences...and each other. And on a very related note: social deduction! What's new and what are our faves in this class of games that have us lying to and manipulating each other? In this, our 86th episode, the Party Gamecast featuring the Party Game Cast examined the remaining two Spiel des Jahres nominees for party game of the year for 2019: LAMA and Werewords. We took a look at a possible predecessor of Werewords called Insider as well. We also ate some chips and chocolate and did a faithful reenactment of that one episode of Night Court where the defendant was dead and the actors were all members of a community theater improv group. I swear I remember that episode. It might have been the cough syrup. WHAT THE FOOD On What the Food, we ate some delightful tortilla chips and less-than-delightful Turkish delight, and also a protein bar made of peanut-flavored dessicant. INSIDER, WEREWORDS We reviewed these hidden-traitor word guessing games (?!), comparing them and lamenting the fact that there aren't enough waterfowl-based vehicles in the world. LAMA We talked about a game from an up-and-coming German designer named... Knish? Contessa? Something like that. This guy is going places. (By the way, according to its description by the Spiel des Jahres folks, LAMA stands for "the German acronym 'Lege alle Minuspunkte ab' (something like 'Leave All your Minus points Aside.')") (https://www.spiel-des-jahres.com/en/lama) THE PARTY GAMECLASH! This is party gameclash on pirate satellite. Actually it's on the Internet, but that's pretty close. In this episode, we played (?) Ghost Court, a game (?) where Rocki did not have to meow like a kitty cat but did get to explore her love of improv. I'd like to thank again those of you who have donated to us on Patreon (at https://www.patreon.com/Partygamecast) and shamelessly panhandle to those of you who haven't. You could also try smoke signals, semaphore, and astral projection but we make no guarantees about those.   Also, stay tuned after the episode for a "shawarma scene."

What we've been Reading:Jacob dipped his toe back into Transmetropolitan. What we've been Eating:Peter ate a bunch of bad food while off his diet. In this episode of "Board Gaming with English" Dustin and Rich talk about the tabletop game called "Werewords" by Ted Alspach. This game is another social deduction game that mixes Werewolf from Episode 1 and the classic question-guessing game called 20 Questions. This is a great English game for asking questions and learning some vocabulary words from others playing the game. If you are on the village team, you need to guess the words, if you are on the werewolf team, you need to be sure no one guesses the word.

It's the last day of 2017 so it seems only fitting that we have a bit of a retrospective of the year. Using the BG Stats app which I have been diligently recording all our plays on, we review the year in gaming for us including some facts and figures from a years worth of data, our progress in our 10 by 10 challenge (a year long challenge to play 10 games 10 times), and some of our gaming highlights for the year. We also talk about the many games we have been lucky enough to play over the last week with friends and family including Werewords, Junk Art, Deception Murder in Hong Kong, Ex Libris, Schotten-Totten, Ticket to Ride First Journey and Rhino Hero Super Battle. We also announce the winner of our Star Realms contest - listen to the end of the episode where we draw the winner! Firstly - apologies for the audio on this weeks episode, my computer is currently on its last legs and crashed midway through editing doing some damage to the track. We might sound a bit distant in places but you should still be able to hear us! This week we were invited round a friends for dinner and instead of being asked to 'bring a bottle' we were asked to bring a board game! I'm sure most people who are into the hobby and have a collection of board games are asked on occasion to recommend a board game, or perhaps select a board game for a certain occasion. We discuss some of the thoughts that go into selecting or recommending a board game for others and how we have honed this skill over time. We also have our usual discussion of games we have played in the week including the Goonies Adventure card game, Pandemic and Werewords.
