Our Oscar winning series continues into the 2010s, with the 2014 Best picture winner, Birdman. We open up the show this week by talking about the unexpected connection to our last best picture No Country for Old Men. We dive into the blurred lines between what's real and imagined, we talk about the difference between love and admiration and wax poetics on the meaning of the title the unexpected virtue of ignorance. A thing is a thing, not what is said of that thing. Well in this case that thing is our podcast and it's just pretty much a podcast. That's this week on Hell of a Picture.
Our Oscar predictions plus reviews of Last Breath, I Heart Willie, Cold Wallet, Riff Raff, Mobile Suit Gundam and more. Plus an interview with Lloyd Kaufman Interviews author Mathew Klickstein. Hilarity ensues?
The most extended F1 season in history is finally over on the edge of Christmas, and McLaren has taken its first F1 World Constructors' Championship since 1998 after a stunning and dominant win by Lando Norris. Our Oscar—and yes, we say ours because he is our columnist—was taken out on the first corner by a clumsy Max Verstappen, but he set a marker in the ground as the only driver in the field willing to challenge the four-time champ on the track. There is plenty of huff and puff and bluster off the track, with the war of words impressing Bruce, but in the end, none of that matters. Next year's Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc put it in stunning drives from the back of the grid, meaning the F1 fight next year will be salivating. We also discussed Jack Doohan's F1 debut and why the outing matters more than the result. We have plenty of news to discuss, and then we close out with some speedway. A stunning season on the dirt ovals of Australia is ready to unleash as the tar babies go to sleep. And if you are on the AC Delco site, use the code AAREVL25 for a 25% discount on all your parts. All this and more on the latest episode of the Auto Action RevLimiter. Check out https://autoaction.com.au/ for all the latest updates and dropping news. We are back with the most current year in review we could do. We held off on doing this episode until all the big movies of the year were available to see. Our Oscar prediction episode was previously posted, and there were a couple nominated movies on our year in review lists. Not surprisingly, these episodes tend to go long, which leads to a kind of rough ending.
Our Oscar nominee interview series continues with "tick, tick... boom!" star Andrew Garfield, who spoke to David Buchanan and Denton Davidson in December of last year about playing Jonathan Larson in the Netflix film. In the time since this chat, Garfield has been nominated at numerous awards in the Best Actor category, including the Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Academy Awards. Our review of The Wife is why. The production profile lays the groundwork for our review as usual. Could this finally be the year for Glenn Close to win her first Oscar? We recap all of her Awards history during the cast & crew, share what was definitely her missed calling, and then we cover perhaps the best / worst Dad Joke maybe ever. Our breakdown of the numbers, reviews of the production values and the script - it all orbits around the remarkable performance at the center of this film. After we give you your money’s worth in the non-spoiler section, there’s a musical interlude to warn you of spoilers, and it’s go-time. We give you the full plot details, mentioning a few worst scenes before harkening back to many more of the better ones. Where will this film rank in our year at large? Will this performance fight off all the oncoming Best Actress hopefuls? There’s certainly a lot to talk through between Mikes. This is our 16th Oscar Sprint Profile or Movie Event in 2018. We’ve also previewed the rest of the Oscar Contenders in our recent Hollywood Hot Takes episode recapping the buzz coming out of the Fall Film Festivals. We’ve also released 4 episodes covering the Oscar Contender Trailers. Then don’t forget our monthly overviews of theatrical releases, with our October episode coming soon. Our Oscar coverage breaks for some fun diversions into The Conjuring Universe, MCU, and Mission Impossible films. We’ve also enjoyed many an Oscar Retrospective, looking back at movie history from Best Pictures to Original Songs. So if you’ve liked our other programming tendencies thus far, you may love what we have in store for the rest of the month, including a Halloween themed Oscar Retrospective. Do chat with us on social media. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. We are at MMandOscar on Twitter. One of the Mikes was without power since a tornado hit. The other was binge watching “Friends.” So this episode opens with a whole lot of pent up nonsense. Some rants are more metta than others, but nothing we say could compare to the maximum metta of the merc with the mouth (alliteration fans, permission to GO WILD!!). Having just completed our 10th episode on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we could not avoid nor resist this movie event. Both of us loved the first Deadpool, and we did have some high expectations. Our Oscar lense segment makes compelling arguments for and against the award chances for Celine Dion’s original song “Ashes,” as well as the visual effects, and maybe even the adapted screenplay. We then review the soundtrack, score, cinematography, and performances before dancing around the plot to give you a spoiler-free review of the script. There’s a non-dubstep musical interlude to indicate the spoiler section, and we break down all of the schtick filled plotlines. Some immediate carryovers open with some surprising production nuggets, the what could have beens of the post-credit century perhaps. Then we break down most of the plot in our long lists of worst and best scenes. It’s one of our more balanced reviews in awhile, filled with all the gushing and heckling you’ve come to know and love from these movie event reviews. In a fun twist, we decide to add the 2 Deadpool films to our recent ranking of the entire MCU, and we conclude the episode with some intriguing questions about the effects of this metta masterpiece (alliteration fans, feel free to golf clap). We hope you’re enjoying our Oscar Off-Season as we’ve reviewed the films of the MCU, as well as movie events like A Quiet Place, the streaming world of Netflix, basketball movies, and of course, our halfisode series on the music of Oscar. Do check out those five short episodes covering Best Original Song categories of the Academy’s past. For what we may lack in musical knowledge, we make up in awesomely bad singing voices. Stay tuned for more of what we’ve done most. We have another Oscar retrospective planned, the 1989 Best Original Screenplay category featuring Dead Poets Society, Do The Right Thing, When Harry Met Sally, Sex Lies and Videotape, and Crimes and Misdemeanors. We’ll also have another Hollywood Hot Take episode covering the latest in the early Oscar race from the Cannes film festival including a preview of Spike Lee’s Black Klansmen. Feel free to contact us on social media. We’re on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. We’ve taken some pivotal steps to design our upcoming website, mikemikeandoscar.com, and we have grand plans for youtube as well. If you enjoy our work, do please leave us a review on iTunes, like/follow/subscribe/retweet and share our podcasts when you can to help us spread the word about our show. When reality sucks, do watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
