As the penultimate episode in my 2026 Black History Month series, I revisit the stories of African American performers who, for a variety of reasons, including seeking to improve their increase their opportunities as artists of color, made their way to Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the focus is on the low-voiced males, baritones, bass-baritones, and basses, in a variety of musical genres, who found success overseas. Surely the most famous of these is the great operatic baritone Lawrence Winters, who leads off the episode, but there were many others as well, some in opera, some in pop music, and some in that magical and confusing world in between, who also experienced life in its fullness, not just in Germany, but in Austria, Italy, and Norway as well. A few of these singers, among them Kenneth Spencer and Thomas Carey, are still somewhat remembered today. Far too many others are virtually forgotten. Among those we also discuss William Ray, Owen Williams, Henry Wright, William Pearson, George Goodman, and Allan Evans. The musical selections are primarily focused on pop music and crossover, with some fascinating exceptions. Even within this somewhat circumscribed musical palette, however, there is much variety to be experienced, and celebrated. It has been eight years since a large fire swept through the southern Cape town of Knysna, destroying many homes but also wiping out an estimated 30 million honeybees and devastating their natural foraging areas. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Gift of the Givers and the non-profit organization called 'Hope for the Honeybees', large quantities of sugar was secured to provide an emergency sugar syrup feed to maintain the surviving bees, and within two years the local honeybee population was able to re-establish itself in the area. Welcome to episode 211 with Owen Williams, who is the singer and guitarist in The Tubs. He is also a vocalist and guitarist in Ex-Void and the drummer in Sniffany and The Nits and other things in other bands as well, all under the banner of the London based, music collective Gob Nation. In this episode I chat to Owen about his experiences with OCD and the mental breakdown that he was going through while writing songs for The Tubs wonderful second album ‘Cotton Crown' which was released earlier this year. The cover of the record is a black and white image of Owen as a baby with his Mum, who died by suicide in 2014 and we chat about this very specific type of grief and also how people behave around you after you lose someone to suicide. We chat about being in a band, drinking on tour and the realities and challenges of doing music or anything creative as a job. And we chat about intrusive thoughts and compulsions, the guilt and shame that often come with these things and also how they are fed by the societal pressure to be morally perfect all of the time. February is Black History Month in the United States, and the TennisWorthy podcast explores the theme of boldness in tennis. Seventeen-year-old Owen Williams has gone from kid speedway racer to MotoAmerica Junior Cup racer to MotoAmerica Supersport racer, and in 2025 he will be back for a third season of Supersport racing. And this time he will will have more help with recent announcement that he will be joining the experienced, championship-winning Altus Motorsports. We caught up with Williams from his Southern California home to talk about his speedway days, his struggles last season, his hopes for a great 2025, and battling with four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway.
