The CAT Club presents a classic vinyl album:LIVE AT THE WITCH TRIALS – THE FALLwith special guestsMARK HOYLE & PAUL HANLEYAn incendiary debut album, Live At The Witch Trials introduces The Fall as 'northern white crap that talks back'. And so it was for the next four decades: abrasive, non-conformist, literate, witty, rhythmic. It was a sound and attitude obsessed over by two teenage Mancunians, Paul Hanley and Mark Hoyle. Mark took great inspiration from the album when fronting his own band, Dub Sex, and Paul would later join The Fall himself on drums. Both will talk about the music scene in Manchester around the time, and the impact this record and The Fall had on it.This event took place on 30th January 2025 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire.Special thanks to our good friends at Route publishing for all their help with making this gathering a special one for so many people. To find out more about the CAT Club please visit: www.thecatclub.co.ukThis podcast has been edited for content and for copyright reasons.Happy Trails.
If you went to LI Who in New York you may have seen artist Bret Herholz in the Dealer's Room. He and Paul Hanley created a wonderful comic featuring the Shalka Doctor taking on vampires and he joins me on this episode to talk about it! Also the latest Doctor Who comic news and FOUR reviews.
The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Paul Hanley is in conversation with Jason Barnard for The CAT Club in Pontefract, Yorkshire. Guided by Paul's The post Paul Hanley on Buzzcocks appeared first on The Strange Brew .
A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION – BUZZCOCKS with special guest, Paul Hanley. Buzzcocks' 1979 album, 'A Different Kind of Tension' may have been released the same year as ‘Singles Going Steady,' but it is a different shape of beast to ‘Singles.' For a start it was recorded intentionally as an album rather than cobbled together by a naive U.S. label in search of punk dollar. Track three is “You Say You Don't Love Me” which automatically rates the album a straight 10, but there are other objects d'interest up in this sweet, sweet bastard of a record. By this point, on their third studio album proper, Pete Shelley was firmly entrenched as the band's driving creative force—yet songs by Steve Diggle like “Sitting Round at Home” and “You Know You Can't Help It” are rough-hewn gems in the catalogue worth seeking out. For the most part, as for majority of their output, the songs are short, sharp, punk-pop shocks that electrify and energize—and while their formula may have been perceived by some as tired by this point, the band would continue on in various incarnations right up until the present day. Even now, with Shelley gone, Diggle has chosen to keep pushing Buzzcocks into the future. The eternal teenagers somehow continue their path, unswerving, and it's a beautiful thing to both reflect on and behold. With special guest PAUL HANLEY Man of letters and former Fall drummer, Paul Hanley has written a book on Buzzcocks called ‘Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (And Me),' to give it its full title. The book mixes together biography, interview, critique and social history to create a full picture of the legendary Manchester group, equally beloved of fans of punk, post punk and indie. Route Publishing – who have also published Hanley's ‘Leave The Capital: A History Of Manchester Music In 13 Recordings' and the masterful ‘Have A Bleedin Guess: The Story Of Hex Enduction Hour' – have the following to say: "Paul Hanley's obsession with Buzzcocks peaked between the ages of 14 and 16, exactly the age when ‘favourite band' actually means something important. An essential part of the charm of Buzzcocks to him were their proximity and approachability." Paul Hanley is also one half of the drumming duo who power recent Q Album Of The Year, House Of All, and co-host of the Oh! Brother podcast with kin Steve Hanley, JASON BARNARD of Strange Brew podcasts was in the interviewer's chair. This podcast in association with Strange Brew podcasts. This event took place on 21st March 2024 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Hello everyone…we recorded a special episode of Coffee With Krummenacher about Victor's times and friendship with Mojo Nixon. We discuss what it was like being on the road when Mojo was opening for Victor's band Camper Van Beethoven, making split flexi-discs and doing inspired photo shoots together, Mojo and Camper playing The Filmmore together, taking mushrooms and long nights with the man, piss-filled cereal bowls, Mojo's sweet shamanistic outlook on life, living an authentic life, Mojo's Camper Van Beethoven cover version, and how Mojo was going to be on the Revolutions Per Movie podcast in a few weeks to talk about a Replacements documentary that he saw in his head that didn't exist (yet) and the excited email he sent me about his ideas. It's a wild and beautiful tribute to a singular, weirdo force that is no longer with us.Normally, ‘Coffee With Krummenacher' is just one of the exclusive bonus shows we have over at the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon (a podcast where my guests talk about their favorite music documentaries or music narrative films), but I thought we should make this episode available to everyone. Paul Hanley used to be in The Fall – he played on, amongst other seminal releases, one of my favourite records, 1982's Hex Enduction Hour, and with brother Steve, also a member of Mark E Smith's hugely influential avant garde pop outfit, now hosts the Fall podcast Oh! Brother – but he really, really loves Buzzcocks, who happen to be one of my very favourite bands too. I enjoyed Paul's first book Leave The Capital hugely, and so when I learned he was writing a book about Pete Shelley's genius pop punk outfit, titled Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (and me), I was keen to get him on the podcast for a chat. The book is due in April next year, but get on that pre-order now!Watch this episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLCgKF6YcZM&t=1042s Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Vf_1E1Sza2GUyFNn2zFMA Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/jamesmcmahonmusicpod/
This week, we talk to the legendary UK author & musician Paul Hanley (The Fall, House of All & ‘Leave The Capital'). He picked the divisive Clash film ‘Rude Boy' to discuss at length. Along the way, we discuss lead ‘actor' Ray Gange's perfect aloofness and failure as a roadie, the notion of punk rock musicians as actors, The Clash's repudiation of the film, and whether or not The Fall's Mark E. Smith gave The Clash a pass.On a side note…the original recording of this conversation was corrupted, so we had to use the backup. We apologize for any crunchiness, but maybe you could think of this episode as our ‘Are You Are Missing Winner' of the series! So let's salute the new wave and hope nobody escapes on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.Paul Hanley:https://www.route-online.com/blog/category/authorshttps://houseofall.bandcamp.com/Theme by Eyelids 'My Caved In Mind'www.musicofeyelids.bandcamp.comArtwork by Jeff T. In a truly blockbuster episode, we discover how most modern discourse (on issues like world peace, race unity, the empowerment of women and more) was influenced by Abdul-Baha and the generation he inspired. Fasten your seatbelts for this one... you'll be blown away by what you discover. You'll be truly surprised by just how extensive the influence of the early Baha'i community was in the evolution of key ideas including affirmative action, black pride, the Parents Teachers Association, the moment of silence commemorating the fallen of the First World War and so much more. Hugh and Paul will share stories from the life of an extraordinary pioneer of the environmentalist movement, Richard St. Barbe Baker. One hundred years ago, Baker foresaw and warned the world about the emerging environmental crisis—and offered solutions that are only now being appreciated and applied. Baker's work as a forester and conservationist paralleled his activities as an early member of the Baha'i Faith, a faith that provided inspiration for his ceaseless efforts to conserve and restore the world's forests. Paul Hanley has published five books and 1600 articles on the environment, sustainable development, agriculture, and other topics. Paul's biography, Man of the Trees: Richard St. Barbe Baker, the First Global Conservationist (University of Regina Press 2018), features a foreword by HRH Prince Charles and introduction by Jane Goodall. A biography for middle school children, Richard St. Barbe Baker: Child of the Trees, was published in 2020. Paul has received a number of awards, most recently the Food System 2050 Vision Prize from the Rockefeller Foundation. Hugh Locke is president and co-founder of the Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA), a non-profit working with small-scale family farmers to help feed and reforest a renewed Haiti. Earlier in his career Hugh was director of the Office of Public Information at the Baha'i International Community in New York. While still a student, he was mentored by Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889 – 1982). Hugh subsequently established the Baker archives at the University of Saskatchewan and continues to serve as St. Barbe's literary trustee.
Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode, I'm joined by multi-award-winning writer, Paul Hanley, who has written thousands of articles and several books mainly about the environment, sustainable development, and agriculture. Paul tells us how he became a Baha'i, and about the extraordinary life of Richard St. Barbe Baker, the first global conservationist. We also discuss population growth, urban farming, how everything is interconnected, and the need for an ethical revolution in the world. I hope you enjoy this fascinating conversation! Naturally, the friends habitually look to the teachings to set the standard to which to aspire. But the community’s deepening engagement with society means that the economic dimension of social existence must receive ever more concentrated attention." - Read the full letter here: https://bit.ly/3t7xcHJ - Listen to an audio reading of this letter here: https://bit.ly/3cjPrmv Be sure to subscribe to the Baha’i Blogcast for more episodes on: * YouTube: http://bit.ly/2JTNmBO * iTunes: http://apple.co/2leHPHL * Soundcloud: https://bit.ly/30dX0G4 * Spotify: http://spoti.fi/2IXRAnb If you would like to find out more about the Baha'i Faith visit BAHAI.ORG, and for more great Baha'i-inspired content, check out BAHAIBLOG.NET: http://bahaiblog.net/ Thanks for listening! -Rainn Wilson

Award-winning film-maker, artist, and writer Miranda July is known for making art out of the everyday and overlooked aspects of life. It was her 2005 film, You, Me and Everything We Know, that brought her to public attention. As a monograph dedicated to her work is published, she joins Front Row to discuss a protean career which has seen her push at the boundaries of making art. In 1982 post-punk group, The Fall, led by charismatic frontman Mark E. Smith, released their fourth album Hex Enduction Hour. At the time the group were struggling for attention and success outside their small but devoted following that included Radio 1 DJ John Peel who regularly championed their music. Hex Enduction Hour changed all that and five decades on is still regarded as a masterpiece. Former Fall drummer, Paul Hanley has written a new book, Have A Bleedin Guess, about the making of the album and is joined by music critic Kate Mossman to discuss the album's significance. For a new occasional series Front Row is commissioning audio diaries from Britain’s cultural leaders about the work they're doing to continue to connect with their audiences and to ensure their institutions will be able to open again once this crisis ends. First up is Gemma Bodinetz, Artistic Director of the Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres. English folk group, The Unthanks, released a new album, Diversions Vol 5: Live and Unaccompanied, just before the lockdown. The album marked a return to the unaccompanied vocal harmonising that made the group’s name. They were supposed to be on tour, instead they’ve launched a new series of daily performances - At Home With The Unthanks - on their Facebook page. Singer Becky Unthank gives a live performance from her home in Tynedale Valley, Northumberland. Presenter: Katie Popperwell Producer: Ekene Akalawu
In this episode, I'm in Reykjavik, Iceland with Halldor Thorgeirsson, the Chair of Iceland’s Climate Council, and retired Senior Director of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC). We talk about the environment, and Halldor teaches me about how Carbon Matter really matters. He tells me about Iceland, his work, how he became a Baha'i, the importance of consultation and accompaniment, Baha'is who have influenced his life, and the importance of moral leadership and engaging in constructive forces in our society. I hope you enjoy the conversation! To find out more about some of the things we covered in this episode, check out the following links: * Find out more about the UNFCCC here: https://unfccc.int/about-us/about-the-secretariat * Here's the official website for the Baha'is of Iceland: https://www.bahai.is/node/51?language=en * I mention that I'm in Iceland for SoulPancake: https://soulpancake.com/ * At the beginning of the podcast, Halldor shares the following prayer by Baha'u'llah in Icelandic: "Ég ber því vitni, ó Guð minn, að Þú hefur skapað mig til að þekkja Þig og tilbiðja Þig. Ég staðfesti á þessu andartaki vanmátt minn og mátt Þinn, fátækt mína og auðlegð Þína. Enginn er Guð nema Þú, hjálpin í nauðum, hinn sjálfumnógi." Here's the English translation of that prayer: "I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting." * Halldor makes reference to the following Writings of Baha'u'llah: "Love Me, that I may love thee. If thou lovest Me not, My love can in no wise reach thee. Know this, O servant." * Halldor mentions Baha'i pioneers: https://bahaipedia.org/Pioneer * Halldor mentions the following Hands of the Cause (https://www.bahaiblog.net/2014/06/hands-cause/): - Ugo Giachery (https://bit.ly/2uUhAyH) - William Sears (https://bit.ly/36WiFE5) - Abu'l-Qasim Faizi (https://bit.ly/384fRVE) - Amatu’l-Baha Ruhiyyih Khanum (https://bit.ly/2RjaET7) - Rahmatu’llah Muhajir (https://bit.ly/2tacvln) * Halldor talks about the Kyoto Protocol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol * Halldor mentions the Universal House of Justice: https://bit.ly/2tnb6aX * Halldor mentions the "Mashriqu’l Adhkar", which means a Baha'i "House of Worship", also commonly referred to as a Baha'i temple. Paul Hanley was the drummer in Manchester legends The Fall from 1980-85 and now plays with Brix & The Extricated. He's studying for an English degree with the Open University and occasionally writes for Louder Than War. He's married with three children and once got 21 on Ken Bruce's 'PopMaster'. When British bands took the world by storm in the mid-sixties, the world turned and looked at London. Despite the fact that the most successful of these bands hailed from the North West corner of England, for the USA, London was the source of these thrilling new sounds. And in many ways it was - The Beatles, The Hollies and Herman's Hermits recorded all their hits with London-based producers, for London-based companies in London studios. And that's how it remained, until four Mancunian musicians became alive to the possibility of recording away from the capital. Against the prevailing wisdom, they opted to plough their hard-earned cash back into the city they loved in the form of proper recording facilities. Eric Stewart of The Mindbenders and songwriter extraordinaire Graham Gouldman created Strawberry Studios; Keith Hopwood and Derek Leckenby of Herman's Hermits crafted Pluto. Between them they gave Manchester a voice, and facilitated a musical revolution that would be defined by its rejection of the capital. This book tells the story of Manchester music through the prism of the two studio's key recordings. Of course that story inevitably takes in The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall and The Stone Roses. But it's equally the story of 'Bus Stop' and 'East West' and 'I'm Not in Love'. It's the story of the Manchester attitude of L.S. Lowry, by way of Brian and Michael, and how that attitude rubbed off on The Clash and Neil Sedaka. Above all, it's the story of music that couldn't have been made anywhere else but Manchester.
