On today's show, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview the inspiring Kailee Scales, the CEO of Pencils of Promise. Every organization that strives to do great things in the world, needs a strongly empathetic, compassionate and caring leader who is deeply committed to creating lasting change. Kailee Scales has embodied these attributes from early in her life. She has been devoted to a life of service for years and firmly believes that Every human being was born free. But we know for many people there are barriers to this freedom. She believes there are processes that allow people to either have freedom of action and decisions or not to have freedom over their actions and decisions and this is what devoted her life to figuring out why this is. Kailee has raised over $100 million and led domestic and international NGOs to address some of the world's most progressive social and political issues. Most notably, she served as founding national director of Mentor USA and global coordinator of Mentor International, a drug-abuse prevention organization led by Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, working in close conjunction with HMQ Silvia and United Nations leadership. From 2017 to 2020, Kailee served as the first Managing Director of Black Lives Matter Global Network. In this role, she was responsible for building infrastructure across the global organization.. She launched the Arts+Culture platform and created BLM's WhatMATTERS2020, a civic engagement campaign targeted towards Black Millennial and Gen Z voters at risk of disenfranchisement. She also served as the executive producer of the viral video, Rest in Power Beautiful, which aired less than 48 hours after the murder of George Floyd. It was seen over 10M times on social media, BET, CBS, Times Square and the Staples Center. In June 2021, she was chosen by Adam Braun to serve as the CEO of Pencils of Promise. This was a deeply insightful conversation and I hope you find a lot of takeaway value in Kailee's message. I've included links to POP in the show notes as well where you can find Kailee on social media. I also encourage to head on over to POP to check out there amazing work. If you are an educational leader or teacher looking to be involved there are lots of ways to connect with them and offer your time. As well, please consider a donation to their cause. In today's episode, our guest is Kailee Scales. Kailee has been on multiple national publications and now sits at the top of running Pencils of Promise. She served as the first Managing Director of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and supported the development of a solid infrastructure around the decentralized organization, allowing it to grow from a hashtag to a political and cultural powerhouse for Black people worldwide. Stay tuned and learn more about Kailee! [2:18] Why should we listen to you? As a stranger in a cafe in the middle of a pandemic, I have something very important to say if I talk to you. I like to kind of keep to myself. Once we start talking, we could talk. But I'm not one to strike up a conversation. [2:48] I'm a strange paradox. I am very engaging, I love people, and I love talking to people. But I can be nervous. I think all of us have a bit of a paradoxical little part of our personality. [4:00] Kailee's career First, I'm a mom. First thing when I wake up in the morning, it's school. Then I go right into my work, and sometimes I just kind of look at my work a little bit as I'm getting ready for school because I love what I do so much, particularly with Pencils of Promise- the organization that I lead. It is just so empowering, especially when we feel a little uncertain and all over the place; it's great to be able to do something to help the world. [5:22] World movements All the things that happened in my formative years just pointed me toward a world change of transformation. I realized I was familiar with a lot of the world's issues, and I was always mobilized and had opportunities to volunteer and do things. As a result of that, I realized that we all have a part in this world; whether or not we like it, we all have a part. We can affect change. I wanted to make a shift to making sure that that happens. So the process of contributing to Big World Problems makes me feel better. [6:58] Making it happen It's always about identifying the North Star, identifying what you're trying to accomplish, and being firmly resolved to accomplish that thing—and then being open to realizing that there are many pathways to that thing and not judging. The way it happens will be strategic, will be exactly the way it's supposed to happen, will teach you lessons along the way, will allow you to purposefully take a different pathway to see if it'll work and see if it will fail. If it does, you fail fast and move back the other way. You won't be as connected to how you're doing it as you are to what you are trying to achieve. [18:49] Building a platform to have a communication channel We want to create these things to end these personas, platforms, and brands to appeal to others. We forget that each of us has high value and each of us has gifts. We all need to stay centered, honor, expand and expound that because no one can be you, and no one has what you have, even if you're a twin. [19:34] It's always really important to me to know who I am and discover that and not be afraid of the things that I may not like. The North Star analogy also pertains to us as individuals; what is our individual North Star? [28:03] What would you attach your success in the area you are to? It was the skill, acknowledgment, and awareness that change is possible. I shared the commitment with many of my colleagues throughout my career and found those like-minded people who understood that change is possible. [29:05] I value myself, know I have gifts, and honor those. I value you and I know you have gifts, and I honor that. Along the way, sometimes, we need help. Sometimes we need support. Sometimes we need to be seen. Sometimes we need encouragement and comfort. We always need love. That's the spirit in which I engage all the time. I treat others as if they engage that way all of the time. I think that's what brings me in these environments with like-minded people who also value themselves and value their gifts and want to make sure that the world sees that and that helps the world promote that. [31:04] Handling people that will come with inflammatory words or statements These questions go unanswered because these disparities exist because there are people who inherently disagree and want to keep things the same way. When you do this change work, you are changing. You are raging against a machine and institution, individuals who disagree with you, which is why you have to dismantle those feelings. You have to flat already just out commit to that. [35:23] When do you know you've won? It's one step at a time. It's one person at a time. It's again, back to that whole Northstar self-actualization: your goal is your peace and joy and your ability to appreciate the process, whether or not it's working because you feel fulfilled. We also have to calibrate our goals, desires, dreams, and hopes with finding those interim moments of fulfillment, those interim moments of feeling peaceful, love, grounded and leaning into that and absorbing all that gives us to motivate, empower, and sustain us to the next thing. [38:19] Pencils of Promise Pencils of Promise for me is a continuation of my equity work. This transformation works to ensure that people everywhere have opportunities, that we level the playing field, and that human beings can access the rights they were born into as human beings. Pencils of Promise focuses on providing high-quality educational opportunities for children worldwide. Key Quotes: [6:17-6:35] “If your room is a mess, and you clean it up, you feel better. Just a process that makes you feel better. And so the process of contributing to Big World Problems makes me feel better.” [17:14-17:24] “We all do what we want. But I always think about staying connected to ourselves and staying connected to each other is what will transform the world.” [23:05-23:11] “You must be present with yourself at all hours of the day. You don't just deserve 15 minutes. You deserve 24 hours. You should center and be present in all the stuff. ” Learn more about Kailee Scales on: Website: https://www.kaileescales.com/ https://pencilsofpromise.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kailee.scales Twitter: https://twitter.com/kaileescales?lang=en

This week, Cory speaks to entrepreneur, bestselling author, and philanthropist Adam Braun, who is best known for being the Founder of Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases access to education for children in the developing world. He also wrote a New York Times best selling book The Promise of a Pencil and more recently the co-founder of one-year debt-free college alternative called MissionU. In this weeks episode, Adam talks about his personal upbringing and what lead him to start his organization, his offers advice to current college students, he opens up about past failures and says what are the biggest misconceptions about the outcome of a degree. “YOU SHOULD BE A SAVVY ROI-DRIVEN CONSUMER OF YOUR EDUCATION” Adam Braun (@AdamBraun) is a New York Time Bestselling Author, the Founder of Pencils of Promise, and the Founder of MissionU, a college alternative. Cory Levy interviewed Adam on the OFF RCRD Podcast about his past and advice for others based on his experiences. “I would say to any student, that you should be a savvy ROI-driven consumer of your education…thousands of the schools around the country that are charging enormous prices without particularly strong results.” In the interview, Adam also talked about the financial burden that college puts on students. “College is supposed to be this great economic enabler. My wife went to college and initially (went) out of state and transferred back in state because the tuition fees were so high and she just got absolutely decimated by this crazy amount of student debt and had to leave school before even completing her bachelor’s degree.” MissionU is a tuition-free college alternative that earns money from students based on their future earning potential instead of charging fees upfront. Adam explained that MissionU students aren’t looking for a traditional overpriced college education. “They don’t just want to learn about theory, about these abstract ideas. They want to do things that they can actually present to the real world and that employers will actually value as a skill that’s going to be needed for the rest of their career.” Adam believes in following your purpose but is skeptical of the advice that young people should follow their passion. “I think this idea that you should follow your passion is not a great piece of advice because passions are incredibly fleeting. The idea of following your passion means follow whatever you’re excited about at this moment, and I don’t think that it stretches people to really do the tough, introspective work, to not discover passion but to discover purpose. I’m a huge advocate of following your purpose.” Adam has followed his purpose, which has led him to become a best-selling author and the founder of two impactful companies.

Each leader in the social sector has their own winding (and sometimes surprising) path to their present influence. For Jackie Roshan, the director of transparency and data innovation at Pencils of Promise (PoP), this journey has included childhood adversity; studies in South Africa, Peru, and Thailand; and a life-changing move to New York City. This path has brought Jackie to Pencils of Promise, where she now leads the vital effort to maximize impact and transparency at the high-profile organization. Pioneers of peer-to-peer fundraising, Pencils of Promise partners with local governments and education ministries in Ghana, Guatemala, and Laos to change public education systems. They work within communities to build schools, train and support teachers, and implement water sanitation and health programs. Jackie and PoP are also leading the way toward new heights of impact evaluation and transparency in the sector. Intent on identifying and optimizing programs that change lives, she and her team are using the power of data and accountability to unlock the potential of more than 33,000 students.
Today on Cause Talk Radio, Megan and Joe talk to Leslie Engle Young, Director of Impact at Pencils of Promise (PoP), about how the how organization has become a top philanthropic brand by smashing its goal of increasing access to quality education for children in the developing world. I pride myself on not being a but guy (no double meaning intended). The buts that I hear the most are "I didn't have any money", "I didn't have a chance", "I grew up in a poor neighborhood", "I didn't have a mentor". People are loaded with buts in life; that's why the majority of people fall into a standard life. For me personally, my "but" is usually that I love the process and the climb. If I don't achieve the maximum upside in my career, it's going to be predicated on the fact that I loved the climb too much. I liked the grind too much, and that didn't allow me to scale and create the level of wealthy needed to pull it off. But I do hear way too many "buts" from people. But is an excuse. BUT ... :) before I finish with my ra-ra scenario, let's understand that there is some very real stuff going on in the world. You could be born in a part of the world where there is a dictator or communism. Do I think it's easy as to be a female entrepreneur in the Middle East as it is to be in New York City? No. Of course not. Just like any white male born in a semi affluent environment is bound to have a leg up on minorities in poor communities. But there is a flipside to this. The hustle that you get from coming from the grind is a huge advantage. Some people think you're dead on impact, that
An ordinary person can create extraordinary change. "One of the biggest things missing in the non-profit space is the sense of for-profit business acumen." -Adam Braun The Cheat Sheet: How much money did he start Pencils of Promise with? Why must all communities that receive a school contribute 20%? Why non-profits can sometimes have adverse effects. What are the three forms of compensation? Adam shares what to consider when making your next career move. And so much more... Many of us dream about giving back, adding meaning to our lives and making a positive impact in the world. But how many of us do anything with that dream or even think we're still capable of pursuing it? Adam Braun of Pencils of Promise has pursued his passion for education and has now written his book, The Promise of a Pencil, to inspire and show the rest of us it's not too late and that ordinary people can create extraordinary change. Join us as we chat about that topic and more on episode 381 of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: Founding an educational non-profit wasn't always a dream of Adam Braun's. Born in NYC, he moved to the suburbs of Connecticut when he was a small child. His parents always placed a strong emphasis on education and he went to one of the best public schools available. He played basketball while in school and saw the distinct economic gap that existed. Some of his teammates lived in the worst neighborhoods while others lived in large mansions. He was fascinated by this and asked the parents who lived in the mansions what they did for work. The resounding answer: Wall Street. By 13 he was obsessed with getting a job on Wall Street and opened his own trading account. At 16 he spent a summer interning at a hedgefund and at 20 he was exactly where he wanted to be: he was playing collegiate basketball for Brown University, studying economics and on his way to his dream career on Wall Street. All of that changed when he did a program called "Semester at Sea". It's a collegiate program in which students and faculty spend a semester on a cruise ship traveling and exploring 10 different countries. Students and professors and administrators come from over 200 different schools to participate and Adam was one of them. Their first stop was South Korea, but on their way they were caught in a superstorm. Their ship was hit by a rogue 60-foot wave that knocked out their power and navigation system. When the announcement came to get to their muster stations everyone, including the adults on board, believed they were going to die. After a few minutes though, Adam knew he was meant to do more than simply die at sea at the age of 21. A feeling of calm came over him, and soon everyone onboard was safe. They continued their semester at sea and Adam enjoyed the backpacking and exploring of each country. As a project during his travels he asked a child in every country what their dream was. In India one child's answer floored him. The child simply wanted a pencil. When Adam handed him his own pencil the child lit up. That experience was the origin of Pencils of Promise. On today's episode we talk about the steps he took to building his non-profit after that experience, why it's been so wildly successful (people like Lewis Howes and Gary Vaynerchuk sit on the board) and how he wrote The Promise of a Pencil. He also shares how stepping away as the CEO of PoP actually helped the organization to grow and thrive, and he explains how you can apply his same lessons learned to your business. When we hear the word, or hear about “non-profits,” we often think about organizations that seem like they are fighting the oncoming wave in order to try and do good. Often with noble purpose, sometimes the mission seems too big, the emotional pull too intense, or success too fleeting.Today all of that is changing. We have a whole new group of organizations, perhaps the Gates Foundation being the penultimate example, that look to the ideas and metrics of the for profit world. They realize the importance of scale, marketing, transparency and ways to measure real success. They are, as Adam Braun calls them, FOR PURPOSE organizations. Adam is the founder of one of those organizations, Pencils of Promise. He has now written about his experiences in The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change. My conversation with Adam Braun:
How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary ChangeIt began with a questionto a small boy, begging on the streets of India."What do you want most in the whole world?,"Adam asked."A pencil," the boy replied.Adam Braun reached into his backpack, handed the boy his pencil, and watched as a wave of possibility washed over the small boy.Adam saw then the profound power and promise brought through something as small as a giving a pencil to just one child.Over the next 5 years, Adam backpacked through over 50 countries. From conversations with local parents & children, Adam realized the need for a nonprofit led on-the-ground - & he founded PENCILS OF PROMISE in 2008.Starting with a $25 deposit, Adam & PoP have now built more than 200 schools in Africa, Asia & Latin America.Join Julie Ann and Adam, Founder of PoP, & author of the bestselling book, "The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change" - as they explore Adam's unique “For-Purpose” approach, blending nonprofit idealism with for-profit business principles.
Today on Cause Talk Radio, Megan and Joe talk to Adam Braun, the founder of Pencils of Promise (PoP), a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world. Adam is also the author of a great new book, The Promise of a Pencil. Adam shares how he started Pencils of Promise with an investment of $25, and how five years later his nonprofit is responsible for building over 200 schools. Yet Adam concedes that fundraising didn't come easy to him! Adam explains why "nonprofit" isn't the right word to describe his work. He prefers "For Purpose." Of course, Adam also discusses his for-profit partners and PoP's cause marketing efforts. Tune in for this powerful discussion!
