Some debate that synthetic organic chemistry strategies have become stale, but Dr. Todd Hyster of Princeton University's Hyster Lab disagrees.Todd fell in love with organic chemistry early in his education, but it wasn't until he got turned on to enzyme catalysis that he found his true calling. He's built a career using engineered enzymes to facilitate chemical transformations that would otherwise not be possible. Specifically, he and his team focus on photo-enzymatic catalysis where they use a combination of light and engineered proteins to drive new chemical transformations.Join us to learn about his work, the methods involved, and the types of transformations being accomplished, which is beyond enantioselective synthesis, by the way. This stimulating conversation delves into the tactical and philosophical aspects of the synthetic chemistry, enzyme catalysis, and even the realities of academic funding and industry collaboration. Related episodes: Season 3, Ep.2: Making impossible moleculesSeason 2, Ep.3: Rethinking catalysisBonus content!Access bonus content curated by this episode's guest by visiting www.thermofisher.com/chemistry-podcast for links to recent publications, podcasts, books, videos and more.View the video of this episode on www.thermofisher.com/chemistry-podcast.A free thank you gift for our listeners! Request your free Bringing Chemistry to Life t-shirt on our episode website.Use code BCTLisn3R in September, and cHeMcas+ng in October We read every email so please share your questions and feedback with us! Summary Dr. Andy Vick shares some of the things that surprised him throughout his career and he discusses his passion for reptiles and his experience discussing the pharmaceutical potential of venom with future toxicologists at Ashland University. Next, Andrew Vick discusses his role as an adjunct professor at Ohio State University, his involvement in academia, and how he got into it. We discuss a story about a clinical study that restored hearing in children with gene therapy. The conversation concludes with a discussion about the impact of professional organizations like AAPS on the industry and the importance of networking and fellowship. Takeaways Cancer doesn't have the same death sentence - fear factor it used to have 30+ years ago. It takes about 10 years for a newly discovered compound to make it on the market. Andrew Vick is passionate about reptiles and has a collection of rare reptiles. He enjoys educating others about reptiles and their pharmaceutical potential, particularly venom. There's a shift from small molecules to biologics in the past 5 years. Andrew Vick visited Ashland University to discuss the pharmaceutical potential of venom with future toxicologists, combining his passion for reptiles and pharmaceutical science. Andrew Vick is an adjunct professor at Ohio State University, where he teaches in the College of Pharmacy Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. His role as an adjunct professor involves giving guest lectures, providing career and professional development for students, and serving on the Dean's Corporate Council. Andrew Vick is also involved in evaluating assets developed in academia and collaborating with industry to develop strategies for bringing products to the clinic. We discuss a study by Regeneron that used gene therapy to restore hearing in children with mutations in the otoferlin gene. Regarding Cell-Gene Therapy we have a lot to learn both from the positive pharmacological potential, but also from a safety and tolerability standpoint. Professional organizations like AAPS play a crucial role in networking and fellowship, providing opportunities for collaboration and learning in the pharmaceutical industry. A few years ago, the supplement industry was in such a state that simply putting effective ingredients at their proper dosage on a label, without a proprietary blend was revolutionary. Fortunately, today there are a handful of “evidence-based” companies that do this and do it well. However, in a competitive market, where do you go from here? What is the process? In this episode, we’re rejoined by a registered dietician and DeNovo Supps founder and formulator, Ben Esgro. He has two masters, one in Sports Nutrition, the other in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He gives a behind the scenes look at formulation and development. Also, Eric Trexler, Ph.D., a researcher with experience conducting and reviewing studies on supplements is back to give us insight into the research process of supplement science.

Today's guest on Strength Chat is Ben Esgro, founder of DeNovo Nutrition and an expert in all things supplementation, nutrition, and the science behind it all. He is a Registered Dietitian and did his graduate studies in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Sports Nutrition.  In today's show we discuss Ben's philosophy behind supplementation and his approach to starting a different type of supplement company in an industry often seen as tainted (literally) by fallacious claims, misunderstood science, and unethical business practices.  Ben and the hosts talk about the current state of the industry and the problems/consequences seen as a result of its rapid growth and loose (often non-existent) regulations. He makes recommendations for athletes on how to approach supplementation, what to look for in a brand, and how to research ingredients, effective dosages, and the pharmacology behind the chemicals we put into our bodies. This is an excellent episode for those interested in supplements and understanding more about what goes on behind the scenes in the industry, so as to have the knowledge and be able to make informed decisions about a topic that directly affects health and performance.

Dr. Fulvio D'Acquisto is Professor of Immunology and Director of the Health Science Research Centre at the University of Roehampton in London. Through his research, Fulvio seeks to understand how emotion and lifestyle influence our immune response. He is investigating how different types of emotions (both positive and negative) affect our immune systems at the level of individual cell types and cellular responses. Fulvio’s hypothesis is that each emotion has a particular signature effect on a person’s immune system. Fulvio is also fascinated by psychology, psychotherapy, archetypes, and personality types. He enjoys reading and attending presentations on these subjects when he’s not working in the lab. In addition, Fulvio likes drawing to relax and explore his own creative imagination process. Fulvio attended the University of Naples “Federico II” in Italy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, a Master of Research degree in Experimental Pharmacology, and a Ph.D. in Experimental Pharmacology. After completing his Ph.D., Fulvio conducted postdoctoral research in molecular immunology at Yale University and subsequently conducted research at the William Harvey Research Institute of Queen Mary University of London. Fulvio was awarded a Medical Research Council New Investigator Award in 2004. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Roehampton where he is today, Fulvio served on the faculty at Queen Mary University of London. While there, he earned a Master of Art degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Northampton. In our interview, Fulvio shared more about his life and science.

So she founded Children of the Soil to do just that. She now has a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and is a senior lecturer in the Pharmacy Department, but her passion for community building, for youth upliftment and for environmental education is as strong as ever.

These ladies have accomplished some much in their education and work fields that its hard for me to put into words but you will get a chance to hear their stories in this series. Stay tuned every week for the next 5 weeks inshaAllah to hear all about the amazing work they do. Part 1: Amina Jama is a 24 year old Somali PhD student studying Chemical Biology at Imperial College university in London. She has completed a 4 year integrated master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Queen Mary university in London. Last year she finished a master’s in research in chemical biology at Imperial. She is currently in the first year of her PhD. Her research project focuses on increasing crop productivity by enhancing photosynthesis through manipulating important enzymes that make food in plants, this is to tackle the problem of increasing food demand which is a result of rising global populations. For the past 5 years, she has also been tutoring youth in the Somali community by teaching science courses that can help them get into science degrees in universities insha’Allah. She would love to one day carry on this work in Africa and set up networks that can help people excel in education and provide access to various science and technology industries insha’Allah. In this episode we talked about: * Why did she pick the field of Science * What kind of Support did she receive from Family, Friends and her school. * What Job opportunities are available to those Studying the Sciences * How she stays motivated in such a demanding and draining program * Amina answers a question from a Instagram follower * More tips and advice about getting into the sciences.
