Physicians leave clinical medicine for a variety of reasons. Many leave due to burnout or job dissatisfaction. However, a small and growing number have been forced out of practicing medicine by a process called sham peer review. Peer review is a legitimate process to protect patients in which fellow physicians on a hospital medical staff objectively review a physician's work. But the process can also be used to falsely accuse physicians of poor performance to silence them and have them removed from the medical staff. The process almost always results in a National Practitioner Databank report, which makes it difficult to maintaining malpractice insurance coverage, and eventual rejection from payor physician panels. The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) and Dr. Lawrence R. Huntoon have spent the past twenty years fighting this unfair abuse of the peer review process. Dr. Huntoon is the Past President of the AAPS and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons since 2003. He has also been the Chairman of the AAPS Committee to Combat Sham Peer Review since 2004 and is an internationally recognized and court-qualified expert in sham peer review. In this week's interview, Larry describes how sham peer review works, and why it is so devastating to physicians. He also provides tips on how to lower your risk of sham peer review, recognize it early, and address it when it happens. “The hospitals like things just the way they are. It gives them almost complete immunity for any peer reviews, good faith, or bad faith, that they conduct against a physician.” The Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 considers accused physicians to be guilty of the charges unless and until they can prove their innocence. Over the years many hospitals abused the peer review system to extort and silence competent physicians. Dr Lawrence Huntoon, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, returns for a deep dive into the topic of the hospital peer review system. In this second episode of our medico-legal series, Dr Kalra invites Dr Huntoon for an overview of the key terminologies and processes of the hospital peer review system. Dr Huntoon summarises some of key actions you can take as a physician to prepare and defend yourself. We learn more about different sham peer review tactics through recent cases. Dr Huntoon shares his thoughts on what we can do to create a just system and better future for practicing physicians. What do you need to know about hospital investigations? What is the difference between OPPE and FPPE? How can you get educated on hospital bylaws and processes? #REFEREE #ATTACK #SOCCER Female Referee punched in the back of the head in Adult League Horrifying scene at a soccer game in Argentina this weekend -- when a male player absolutely lost it and attacked a female referee after being handed a yellow card. It all went down during a third division match between Garmense and Independencia of the Tres Arroyos Regional League ... when player Cristian Tirone unleashed on official Dalma Cortadi while her back was turned. In video of the incident, you can see several players try to stop the attack ... but to no avail. Ann Arbor Public Schools' Rec & Ed department has made changes to make its boys and girls youth soccer teams coed for the fall season. Some parents who pushed for the change say the leagues, which are labeled as girls coed and boys coed, still reinforce gender segregation. ANN ARBOR, MI - Kathleen Davis was surprised and disappointed to learn Ann Arbor Public Schools Rec & Ed department segregated teams by gender for children in grades K-5 when she signed her child up to play youth soccer last fall. Davis' kindergartener, who identifies as non-binary, had been welcomed and supported by their teachers, but had their identity “negated” by having the youth soccer teams segregated by gender, Davis said, causing her to start a petition to make all the teams gender-inclusive. It was signed by more than 130 current and former AAPS parents. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/support

It's easy for new parents to worry if their child is developing at the right pace, especially in this day of social media. On this episode, Sharon and Cora discuss the Wonder Weeks app and the different developmental “leaps” as well as the AAPs recommendations for milestones. While reflecting on their baby's development so far, it's clear there is no one size fits all plan for when and how our babies grow.

Treat Symptoms EarlyConsidering the uncertainties around diagnosis, it's best to treat any cold or flu-like symptoms early. At first signs of symptoms, start treatment. Perhaps it's the common cold or regular influenza, maybe it's the much milder Omicron, but since it's hard to tell, your best bet is to treat symptoms as you would treat earlier forms of COVID.Considering how contagious Omicron is, chances are you're going to get it, so buy what you'll need now, so you have it on hand if/when symptoms arise. And, remember, this applies for those who have gotten the jab as well, since you're just as likely to get infected — and perhaps even more so.
