Carolyn Beatrice Parker came from a family of doctors and academics and worked during World War II as a physicist on the Dayton Project, a critical part of the Manhattan Project tasked with producing polonium. (Polonium is a radioactive metal that was used in the production of early nuclear weapons.) After the war, Parker continued her research and her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but she died of leukemia at age 48 before she was able to defend her PhD thesis. Decades later, during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, citizens in her hometown of Gainesville, Florida voted to rename an elementary school in her honor. November 18th would have been her 107th birthday.

Well this episode is loaded up with so much history and excitement, we just can't wait to share it!  We discuss the life of Marie Slobodowska Curie aka Marie Curie or Madame Curie.  But we also stop off in Arthur's corner to discuss differences between moths and butterflies (for example did you know butterflies rest with their wings closed while moths rest with them open) and then goes on to discuss the Rosy Maple Moth, which apparently is not as delicious as it sounds.  However it is impressive and beautiful  We cover Curie's family life, her husband, her 'scandal' and her strength.  Listen to how this woman that Albert Einstein once described as the only person he ever met to be immune to the effects of fame, made her way in the xenophobic France of the 1900's and be surprised at how she spent World War I in another girl power history episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

In the 2000s, London became home to the Russian super-rich. Vast wealth was stripped from Russia by the Oligarchs, and flaunted in London through grandiose properties, ferocious legal disputes, private jets, mega-yachts, and ubiquitous bodyguards. Russian oligarchs made colossal fortunes after the collapse of communism, and London was the destination of choice to spend and protect their wealth. But the shocking killing of ex-KGB man Alexander Litvinenko in London with a radio-active element Polonium, and of Stephen Curtis, the lawyer to many of Britain's richest Russians, sent shockwaves through the Russian community in London. Today I'm speaking with Mark Hollingsworth about how Russia's wealth was harvested and brought to London, and how the UK's institutions and legal infrastructure facilitated the laundering of these vast fortunes, many of dubious provenance. Mark Hollingsworth is an investigative journalist and author of 10 books, notably ‘Londongrad – From Russia with Cash, the Inside Story of the Oligarchs' – published in 2010. He has also written biographies of Mark Thatcher and Tim Bell and acclaimed studies on MI5 and the Saudi Royal Family. He started his career working for Granada TV's award-winning ‘World in Action' programme and now contributes regularly to ‘The Times', ‘Mail on Sunday', ‘The Guardian' and ‘The Sunday Times'. His most recent articles about Russia are published in the Spectator. He is currently writing a history of the KGB.

I love creating this podcast for many reasons but chief among them is the opportunity it affords me to speak to people with whom I might not necessarily cross paths in my every day. This has never been more true than with Jim Down, a consultant in critical care and anaesthesia at University College London Hospitals who was frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic, attended to former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko when he was poisoned with Polonium-210 in 2006 and was one of the first on the scene of the Hatfield train disaster. This show is about hearing how my guests have navigated the more challenging parts of life and come out the other side, and Jim's stories and learnings are extraordinary. His openness about his own mental health and the challenges he's had to overcome as a result of the cumulative stress of life in hospital wards, intensive care units and high-stress situations is levelling, to say the least.Jim is also extremely open, warm and thoughtful, and as you'd perhaps expect from someone who has to make life-or-death decisions, shows real compassion. Even as someone who saw the impact of the Covid-19 virus, he makes efforts to understand the people who now say it was a hoax, which feels extraordinarily magnanimous when you hear what he saw, first-hand in 2020.Life in the Balance and Life Support are available to order now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter. Welcome to our new Russian-language podcast, Then & Now, with me, Teresa Cherfas. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 everything, everywhere, suddenly looked different. That day was a watershed. Guests on the Then & Now podcast are people for whom February 24 became a defining moment, dividing their lives into before and after the war.My first guest is Marina Litvinenko, widow of Aleksandr Litvinenko, who perished in London in November 2006. Aleksandr Litvinenko was poisoned with a lethal dose of Polonium-210. This was to all intents and purposes a nuclear crime perpetrated by Putin's Russia on British soil. But immediately after Litvinenko's murder, the British government kept its silence. Not wanting to spoil relations with Russia, it went no further than accusing two ‘suspects' back in Moscow of the crime. When the British authorities asked for their extradition, they got the usual response – ‘nyet.' After her husband's tragic death, Marina Litvinenko fought long and hard to have her husband's case treated as an act of State terror. In January 2016, the High Court in London judged that the two 'suspects' in Litvinenko's murder had ‘probably' acted under the direction of the FSB and with the approval of President Vladimir Putin and Nikolai Patrushev, Director of the FSB. It was only in 2021 that the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia was responsible for the death of Aleksandr Litvinenko. This is largely down to the efforts of today's guest. The recording took place on 12 January 2023.Questions include:You performed a fantastic feat in defence of Sasha. Where did you draw your strength from? How would you describe the behaviour and attitude of the British authorities toward Sasha's murder? Was it a surprise to Sasha (and to you) that Putin sent assassins to attack him in London? Especially after the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, which explicitly accused Putin of killing Sasha, were you afraid that they could come after you, too? Were you worried for your son?Tell us about some of the projects that have been developed relating to your husband's case? Where were you and what do you remember of the moment you found out that Russia had attacked Ukraine?Did your perception of Putin change as a result? Did it change your feelings about Russia? How would you have described the Putin regime before February 24? Did that change afterwards? How do you see the future of Russia? And of Putin? What would it take for Russia to become a ‘normal' country? Does the West's attitude towards what is happening in Ukraine give you hope? What else do you think the West needs to do? Will Putin and his associates be put on trial and punished for war crimes in The Hague? How do you see the future of Ukraine?

In March 2018 Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia collapsed onto a public bench in the English town of Salisbury. They were weaving in and out of consciousness and behaving like junkies experiencing an opioid overdose. 24 hours later they were hospitalised and placed under deep sedation in critical condition. Skripal was a Russian double agent who had been recruited to work for MI6, the British Secret Intelligence Service. He had been poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union for use in their chemical weapons program. More than a decade before Skripal's poisoning, Alexander Litvinenko, another Russian intelligence officer working for MI6 had been poisoned with a rare radioactive isotope called Polonium. Skripal and Litvinenko's stories are eerily similar and yet diverge on a single fact; while Skripal survived, Litvinenko did not. Join us this week as we explore the fascinating story behind two Russian defectors.

The TV show Friends was king of primetime for a decade and while all six characters were ‘friends' one of them was not like the others: Ross. We look at why he was such a poor fit with this group and what that means for real life scientists. Marie Curie studied at the Sorbonne. She discovered Polonium and Radium. Eventually she became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. All that makes her a unique character. We go to Poland to discover what else made her an outsider. Host Dan Riskin confronts his own reality as an Outsider while also drawing comfort from the realization that that distinction puts him in some esteemed company. And we visit with Dr Wayne Lautt from SciMar. He is disrupting a paradigm, changing the way we think about type 2 diabetes. Specifically, he is looking at the liver and hormone that comes from there, as something that can improve our sensitivity to insulin. www.SciMar.ca
