There is a huge national need for psychiatric service providers to help all ages, from children to older adults. —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN As a family nurse practitioner, my passion has always been in the field of geropsychology - a specialty that utilizes psychological knowledge and methods to understand and assist older individuals and their families in maintaining well-being, conquering challenges, and reaching their highest potential during later stages of life. This specialty is integral to our clinical practice, both in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Now, let's dive into what it means to be a psych mental health nurse practitioner and the incredible work done by remarkable practitioners like Drs. Tony Roberson and Cynthia Awadzi from GWU. ▶️ Nurse Practitioner School: What Do Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners Do? Key points covered in this episode: Main Point 1: What is a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner? A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is a professional who evaluates, diagnoses and addresses the mental health needs of patients throughout their lives. Offers prescribed medications and therapy to help patients who have mental health disorders or substance problems. Responsibilities include conducting physical and psychosocial assessments and providing emergency psychiatric care and treatment. Main Point 2: What does a typical day at work look like for a PMHNP? The typical day's activities vary based on the patients and the clinical environment. A PMHNP meets patients for initial intakes, gathers their full psychiatric history and understands their current concerns. It involves assessing their symptoms, making a differential diagnosis, and developing a treatment plan. Working in an inpatient setting, the focus will primarily be on stabilizing patients with the help of a mental health team. The goal is to prepare them for the transition to an outpatient setting. Main Point 3: What is the average salary for a PMHNP? Psychiatric nursing is known for offering generous salaries compared to other specialties in the field. While the salary also varies based on the state or area where you practice - on average, it is advisable to aim for at least $140,000 per year. Graduate from GW are highly in demand as they are well-prepared to step into the workforce; so you can anticipate good compensation for the skills and expertise you bring to the table. Main Point 4: Why should someone who wants to be a PMHNP apply to GW? The MSN: Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program option gives registered nurses the chance to broaden their horizons in healthcare. ✔️ The lifespan curriculum is one of the key factors that sets GW's program apart. It is crucial for individuals to have the freedom to explore their interests without limitations. That's why the program spans across children, adolescents, adults, and even the geriatric population - a feature to be proud of. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is its hybrid nature, making it convenient for working professionals. The vast majority of the coursework is asynchronous, meaning you can work at your own pace without the need for regular meetings with faculty or peers. However, you'll still receive daily support from dedicated faculty who are always available to guide and assist you on your journey - fully committed to ensuring your success. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is a focus on addiction management. Many schools of nursing to not have this expertise, but faculty at GW do – ensuring students are prepared to help with our nation's addiction crises. Enjoy the season one finale of “Mental Health Trailblazers, Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up,” where our host Indrias Kassaye will be interviewing Dr. Mijung Park, a tenured Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing. Through years of analysis and education, Dr. Park's research has investigated the meaningful roles that both casual caregivers and close family play in fruitful chronic disease self-management between culturally and economically diverse communities. After a fateful encounter on a subway in Korea, Dr. Parks was inspired to work in a psychiatric mental health inpatient unit as her first job post-graduation. Growing throughout her career as a nurse scholar, Dr. Park views her role within the field as translating complex concepts of care and health into more understandable cross-cultural language to aid not just patients but loved ones in understanding the world of psychiatric medicine.Over the course of this episode, Dr. Park and Indrias connect on subjects such as vertical cultural differences via generational modifications and acculturation relevant across minority communities, ways Dr. Park drew attention to her study findings on stress in living environments to collectively help policy makers think about city design in a context of health, and the personal impacts of anti-Asian sentiments not just historically but also in the age of the COVID-19 crisis. If you want to understand Dr. Park's concerns regarding the current practice of looking at entire populations as a unifying cultural group vs. unique subcultures, aspire to discover more about the model minority myth in its portrayal of Asian immigrant groups along with its stressful consequences for those who don't fit the mold, or just hope to pick up recommendations for psychiatric and mental health nurses providing care for patients from ethnic minorities, then catch this episode now. Your host, Karen Doyle Buckwalter will introduce you to Paris Goodyear-Brown, who will discuss play therapy and attachment issues. This episode is the second of a two-part series with Paris! Paris Goodyear-Brown is the founder and director of Nurture House and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor with 20 years of experience in treating families in need. While she specializes in treating trauma (sexual abuse, physical abuse, maltreatment and neglect) and attachment disturbances, she often provides help for anxious, angry or depressed children and teens. A child development expert, she frequently provides parent consultation, dyadic assessment and parent coaching to help parents manage and resolve their children’s behavior problems. She is an Adjunct Instructor of Psychiatric Mental Health at Vanderbilt University, guest lecturer for several universities in middle Tennessee, and has an international reputation as a dynamic speaker and innovative clinician. She provides play therapy and licensure supervision and consults with various school districts, agencies and mental health organizations to help develop play therapy programs and create more developmentally sensitive programming. With trainings in Morocco, Australia, and Sweden, as well as frequent domestic presentations, she is best known for developing clinically sound, played-based interventions that are used to treat a variety of childhood problems. She has received the APT award for Play Therapy Promotion and Education. She is the author of multiple books, chapters and articles related to child therapy. Her newest books include Tackling Touchy Subjects, the Handbook of Child Sexual Abuse: Identification, Assessment, and Treatment, Play Therapy with Traumatized Children: A Prescriptive Approach and The Worry Wars: An Anxiety Workbook for Kids and their Helpful Adults. For the whole of her career, she has carried a vision of a place – a home – in which the space itself would help children and parents feel safe, nurtured and ready to do the deep work of healing. Although it looks like a playhouse – and her child clients call it “the kid’s palace” -the fun, highly playful environment helps the hard stuff go down easier.
