The Verve, The Cranberries, Mazzy Star, Curve, etc. TRACKLIST: 01 - Mojave 3 - Mercy 02 - Mazzy Star - Fade Into You 03 - The Cranberries - Linger 04 - Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas 05 - Lush - Nothing Natural 06 - The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends 07 - Ride - Vapour Trail 08 - My Bloody Valentine - Soon 09 - Pale Saints - Sight of You 10 - Lush - For Love 11 - Curve - Horror Head 12 - Chapterhouse - Pearl 13 - Spacemen 3 - Big City 14 - Slowdive - In Mind 15 - The Verve - Star Sail 16 - My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow 17 - Ride - Taste

For all the Shoegaze lovers out there - and apparently you're a sizeable contingency of our audience - here are three albums that are, at most, a stone's throw from stuff featured in the My Blood Valentine and Shoegaze Decile episodes. Scottish alt-rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain debuted with Psychocandy in 1985 to massive and continued acclaim. All shiny melodies drenched in feedback, Psychocandy casts a long shadow of influence. Matt offers the similarly foundational Cocteau Twins and their 1990 album Heaven of Las Vegas and the David Lynch-approved 2012 effort from The Chromatics, Kill for Love.

We squeezed into our black jeans, teased up our hair and dug deep into a record that changed the musical trajectory of many - including our guest Ed Artigas (Bling Bling, Planelifter, Zira…). 1985’s “Psychocandy” by The Jesus And Mary Chain. East Kilbride brothers Jim & William Reid took their love of noisy groundbreakers like The Velvet Underground & Suicide and fused it with the sugary pop of the Shangri-Las to forge a big, shimmering sound that somehow manages to get under your skin and STILL annoy the hell out of your parents. Slap on some shades and turn it up!
Luwten - Tie Me Down Julia Jacklin - Pressure To Party Blur - Coffee & TV (Live at Studio Amstel, 1999) The National - Light Years The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again Johnny Marr - Hi Hello
Hold on to your hats, fam… we got another banger for ya! Marty kicks things off by doing his best classical radio station DJ impersonation (0:44) Breaking down the setlist from the Breeders ACL night show at Scoot Inn (5:50) naming inspiration for Kris’s first band (7:57) The last time Marty saw GWAR live (14:03) Kris’s weird side project band, The Martian Armpit Orchestra, and their big last.fm hit “Mars is Made of Chocolate Fudge” (18:25), Marty reading the Bob Pollard/Guided by Voices biography “Closer your are” (20:35) and Kris getting a new Gretsch guitar for his 40th birthday (24:30). After some laughs and waaay too much Spin Doctors, Kris and I delve into the meat of episode 4-1985! We start with breaking down our feelings on the 80’s as a decade (35:35), what the charts looked like (46:36), and the introduction of yet another episode themed beverage (1:05:02). Next up on the menu for this delightfully 80’s year, we have two classic albums to break down! We start off with Marty’s pick, the treble-induced, proto-shoegaze masterpiece by Scotland’s Jesus and Mary Chain, Psychocandy. Next up is Kris’s pick for 1985- Tom Waits’ timeless romp through dark alleys, dingy basements, and deserted port towns-Rain Dogs. DJ Janice Long shares her passion for the unique sound of Psychocandy.
By the time William and Jim Reid of the Jesus And Mary Chain put out the 1998 album Munki, the band had been through several iterations. From the noise drenched simplicity of Psychocandy to the pulsing beats of Automatic and the lazy strums of Stoned and Dethroned, the brothers had covered plenty of musical territory while still maintaining the attitude and sound unique to the band. In what would be their last release together until 2017's Damage And Joy, they manage to revisit nearly every phase of the band, and even explore some new ideas. But at seventeen songs and seventy minutes, the sheer length of the album, especially with some ill-advised forays into overlong noodling and keyboard driven tracks, left us wondering if the lack of an outside voice (i.e. a producer with a surname other than Reid) would have shaped a more concise, cohesive and ultimately satisfying listen. Intro - I Love Rock'n'Roll 11:46 - Degenerate 16:14 - Moe Tucker 20:37 - Perfume 23:03 - Commercial Outro - I Hate Rock'n'Roll Facebook / Twitter / Instagram Zazzle Merch Store http://www.digmeoutpodcast.com

With RaShaad still running around Europe, we reach back to season one and welcome back one of our first guests ever, Newsweek's senior writer and Matt's flesh and blood, Zach Schonfeld. Joining the table alongside Zach is Paula Mejia, an associate editor at Atlas Obscura and the author of the 33 1/3rd book on The Jesus & Mary Chain's debut "Psychocandy." We start off bold with a young Toronto prodigy by the name of Mor Mor. We discuss the many context and values of ambient electronics through Debit's song "Power Chords." Zach introduces the whimsical, warped psychadelics of polish rockers Trupa Trupa, along with Soccer Mommy's raw and devestating offering 'Still Clean." Melbourne's Charlie Thread lightens the mood with a bouncy call for more time — "Forever and a Day." 01 "Whatever Comes To Mind" by Mor Mor02 "Power Chords" by Debit03 "Only Good Weather" by Trupa Trupa04 "Glow" by WHATUPRG05 "Vision" by Family Reunion06 "Caminando" by Exotica07 "Still Clean" by Soccer Mommy 08 "Forever & A Day" by Charlie Threads Art: Kevin Horvath © NOT 97. August 2017: The Jesus and Mary Chain have been back in the studio for the first time in 2 decades facing the difficulties of recording together to make new album Damage and Joy. Much has been written about the chaos and violence of the band’s early live shows, their unexpected rise to mainstream Top of the Pops success, and their agonising decline. Now Jim chats to me about their seminal debut album Psychocandy, his tempestuous relationship with his brother Will, and why they don’t conform. #JesusAndMarychain #TheMarychain #JimReid #interview

On the TFT Podcast, Ryan and Matt listen to and discuss “Psychocandy” by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Episode 195: Pop Parsimony originally appeared on Overthinking It, the site subjecting the popular culture to a level of scrutiny it probably doesn't deserve. [Latest Posts | Podcast (iTunes Link)]
The year was 1985. Orwell’s postscript. Fitting then that a record emerged from a band so maligned originally that they took to stealing sets from opening acts, so full of angst that to this day they try to reposition remnants of tales of violence at early shows, and who then might have known the result. Despite the fact that it kinda sounds like it was recorded in a burned-out warehouse, this record, nevertheless, is the lynchpin between The Velvet Underground and the shoegaze movement of England in the early 90s. Beneath all of the circumstance, buried in the gauzy haze of proto-shoegaze, pop songs and hooks with undeniable charm. This week we cover a wide variety of topics, like the Brothers Reid, the confluence between bands we can’t seem to separate in our minds, and the stilted, occasionally simplistic takes shared in reviews of records that are, in retrospect, the foundations for entire movements or scenes, not — hey! — unlike this week’s record, The Jesus And Mary Chain offering PsychoCandy. Buy "PsychoCandy" from Amazon Also, tune in as we weigh the question of ‘How Deadpan is Deadpan Enough?’ (Answer: we’re not sure), the efficacy of giant drumsticks in our A Few Minutes With segment (starring Hall and Oates), and the hilarious by way of spot-on Mikal Cronin video Turn Around — which lampoons Natalie Imbrulia’s 1997 hit cover of Torn. Confused? Don’t be. Grab the edge of your seat and join us as we wander down (and wonder about) memory lane. Wish that Shane had been able to join us, as I’m certain that he’d have plenty to spill on this one…
This week, the content relates to love lost and life spent in the throes of opiate addiction. The films Drugstore Cowboy and Withnail & I are themed and much of the music was introduced to me in the UK.There is a little bit of the steganogrammic, though I doubt anyone would see it, thus the "stegano" aspect of steganogrammic. The sense I had in composing this podcast was one of turning around to face the demons that torture one, and of addressing them in turn. Equally, and perhaps more importantly represented is a sense of gratitude and an earnest earnestness about lives led. The clip at the end before the Israelites song is profound and I've found it to be almost perversely apropos in the life I've known. The podcast is chapterized.
