Note: In this episode I switch back and forth between using the Electro-Voice RE320 and the Electro-Voice RE20 microphones. And the big announcement is that I've decided to put lots of energy into the Podcast Production Community that I recently started on Locals, so come join the party. I'll be posting daily content on gear, software, production workflow, recording, editing, plugins, and whatever else applies to production. The community members are posting good stuff as well. FYI, the quality of the expertise in this group is extremely high - we'd love for you to be part of it. How the community works: You are able to join free and view all the content (videos, audio, text posts) BUT only by becoming a "Supporter" are you able to comment on posts and post things yourself. On occasion I post exclusive content for Supporters only. NOTE: It's only $5 per month to become a Supporter. If you aren't able to become a "Supporter" of the group, definitely join the group (free) and watch/view all the content in the group. And there’s a bunch of podcasters on there already including Eric Hunley, Bryan Entzminger, Darrell Darnell, Bandrew Scott, Ross Brand, Roy Stegman, Heather Welch, Daniel Abendroth, the mighty Ed Sullivan, Leslie Martin, Paul you know who, Jason Sheesley, Jason Bryant, Carrie Caulfield Arick, John Bukenas etc etc etc. Here's the Podcast Production Community ---> https://podcastproduction.locals.com And here's a link/code for one free month of Supporter status over there: https://podcastproduction.locals.com/support/promo/PODCAST More on the RE320 vs. RE20 I own both these microphones and I like them very much. Which one do you think sounded better on my voice?...? Hmmm....? The audio in this episode is completely raw (unprocessed) but I did match the microphones' levels in post-production - *except for the end of the episode when I show you the difference in level between both raw recordings. Other Notes: If you ever have questions please reach out! The start date for the next PES semester is April 20, 2021 If you’d like to share this show with any of your podcaster friends, feel free to send them a message saying, “Btw, here’s a show about podcast audio production you may find helpful” with this link: https://podcastengineeringschool.com/subscribe/ Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with anything, ~Chris
FOMO In Action I was at Social Media Marketing World in 2018 enjoying a networking event on an aircraft carrier in San Diego California. I was contacted by Michael Oneil as he and a few friends were going to go to a club called Prohibition and wanted to know if I would want to attend. Did I say it was a club? Prohibition is a speakeasy. I have never been to a speakeasy. The door that you go through shows "LAW OFFICE Eddie Onare, ESQ." When we arrived there was an actual velvet rope. We had to wait. It myself, Michael O’Neal, Harry Durran, and Natalie Jennings. The anticipation was mounting. How long will I have to wait? Are we going to get in at all? Finally, the bouncer unclipped the rope and let us in. I remember walking through a door and going downstairs. It was getting darker and darker as we went on. When I finally get to the bottom and look around, I see a bar in front of me. I see a bench to the left of me. I see a few chairs to the right of me. It is dimly lit, with red lights in the ceiling. I think to myself. "Someone turned their basement into a bar." Don't get me wrong, it was cool. Michael and I ended up playing and singing that night with the saxophone player from Pink Floyd. But I can't underestimate the buzz and anticipation by the scarcity. This is a tactic called Fear of Missing Out (FOMO for short), and today we are going to talk about Clubhouse. This is an app (currently only available for iOs) and one of the things that is fueling the buzz about this app is their use of FOMO. Clubhouse: Drop-in audio chat Don't get me wrong, this app is cool. However, it's zoom without video and better moderation. Why is it so popular? You have to be invited in (OOOOOH!). It is only on iOs (sorry android people) so here again, only certain people can get in, and for those on the outside when you hear others talking about it, you have fear of missing out. Does it work? I'm doing an episode about it knowing that 75% of my audience can't use it. What Clubhouse is Good For Why I like clubhouse is I'm finding my target audience, and more importantly, my target audience who doesn't know me yet. Then I can LISTEN, and take notes of what is being discussed and take notes as these might be future episodes. I have found a few people I want to connect with due to the details in their profiles, and the value they brought if they actually spoke. Mistakes in Clubhouse If you don't have an answer to a question and someone asks you, just say, "That's a good question that I don't have an answer to." If you don't, often the answer you spew is not helpful and makes you look like an idiot in love with their own voice. Not filling out your profile with your website, your interests, and keywords to help you get found. Ask ing a question that is three seconds long followed by self-promotion that is three minutes long. Most of the true networking happens outside of the app so be sure to check your Twitter and Instagram for DMs. I'm on Android - I Feel Left Out If you look at what clubhouse is at its core is its a group of people (in rooms) that are joining hoping to talk about their favorite subject, meet people, and learn new insights. So do it on zoom. Reach out to other podcasts like yours and pick a date to all get together on Zoom. Assign a moderator, and promote for weeks in advance. Everyone and their brother knows how to connect to zoom. The goal here is not to get podcast ready quality (cause the quality on Clubhouse is "ok"), but more the connection. There are also other tools like Slack, Discord. There are tools like Mastodon where you can setup your own social media network. There will be Copycats - There Always Is Twitter Spaces is coming The issue with Android (from what I understand) is while all the different phones are running Android operating systems, there is enough differences between phone manufacturers to create headaches for app developers. Android Apps Like Clubhouse Connect Club ( maybe? it shows a Google Play Version) Bag Chat This is either another clubhouse or something creepy Michael Stelzner's Awesome Clubhouse Tutorial Great tutorial see https://youtu.be/o7gv7U-rZl8 How Are You Pulling Clubhouse Into Your Podcast? First, this is not entirely compliant with their terms of service. Their terms say I need written permission from participants. I make a notice in the show name, the show description, and when I pull someone on the stage, I ask for their permission to record them. This is still not written, but it is verbal. Please remember, I'm a teacher - not a lawyer. These Devices Make It Easy The Zoom Podtrak P4 ($200) The Zoom Podtrak P8 ($499) The Rodecaster Pro ($599) How? All of these make it super easy to connect a phone. I have three things in my Ask the Podcast Coach. I have myself, clubhouse, and a co-host. I plug my microphone (RE320) into the Rodecaster. I plug my iPhone (via a connector) into a TRRS cable that goes into the Rodecaster. When I connect the Rodecaster via USB I am able to send and receive audio to my cohost who I connect with via Streamyard. Everybody can hear everyone. Using Streamyard. I stream live to my YouTube Channel. I record on the Rodecaster using the separate tracks option (as the audio from clubhouse can have a wide variance). See video https://youtu.be/BsG9UD6nzlE I Almost Lose 15 Years of My Podcast I had my WD 4 Terabyte crash and with it 15 years of podcasting files (all my sound effects, artwork, music, EVERYTHING). It was going to cost me between $700-$1000 to have someone rescue my Drive. Luckily I use Backblaze who walked me through. I am paying $189 to have them save all my files (which are online) to a hard drive and ship it to me. Then I will copy my files to a new hard drive and then ship their hard drive back. I will then be refunded the $189. Backblaze is my hero. For more details on this story, see this video. Because Of My Podcast - I'm Staying Sane Josh from the Saving Elephants podcast sent in a "Because of My Podcast" story and shares how during the trying times of covid, and elections, and protests, he feels podcasting to be a powerful platform for alleviating the symptoms of depression. It's been wonderful to be able to talk to so many like-minded people from all over the country and even the world to have important meaningful conversations. The podcast provides Josh with a platform where he feels like He's not a helpless bystander forced to do nothing more than complain about the lack of substance and civility and depth in our national political dialogue. Instead, through the podcast, he feels like an active participant in that conversation. He is grateful for podcasting for providing me this platform. podcasting has been for me, a real lifesaver. The Zoom Podtrack P4 is coming out next month (from what I hear) and this appears to be a game-changer for those podcasting on a budget. Here are some of the features of the Zoom Podtrack P4: Zoom Podtrack P4 Podcast Recorder Four mic inputs with XLR connectors Four headphone outputs with individual volume control Gain control knobs and mute buttons for each input Phantom power for all XLR inputs Automatically prevent feedback from call audio using the Mix-Minus function Easily connect your phone using the TRRS connection Trigger sound effects using four assignable Sound Pads with 11preset sounds All input sources can be recorded on separate tracks 16-bit /44.1kHz audio WAV Records directly to SD, SDHC and SDXC cards up to 512 GB 2-input, 2-output USB audio interface Class-compliant mode for iOS compatibility Up to four hours of use with just two AA batteries or a USB power supply Can be powered via 2 AA Batteries Can be powered via USB or Zoom AD-17 AC Adapter Comparing the Podtrack P4 to the Rodecaster Pro Zoom P4 VS Rodercaster Pro Zoom Podtrack P4 Manual (pdf), Price: Zoom Podtrack P4 is $199 Rodecaster is $599 Audio Processing: The Rodecaster has built-in APHEX audio processing and mic modeling. There is a "big bottom," an aural exciter, a compressor, and noise gate. The P4 has a low cut (to cut out unnecessary frequencies) and a limiter (to make sure you don't peak and distort). ThePodtrack P4 does have very powerful preamps that are very quiet. The Rodecaster also features a built-in ducking option so if the host is in channel 1, and someone tries to talk at the same time this feature (which can be turned on and off) will ensure the host (mic 1) is heard. Sound Pads: The Rodecaster has 8 pads for sound effects vs the 4 on the P4. If you're doing things live and want the ability to play sounds with a press of a button. As both the Rodecaster and the P4 have the ability to plug a phone in and you could use an app like Backpack studio which enables you to have a ton of sound pads. Slider Vs Knobs The Rodecaster has sliders vs the knobs on the P4 Storage: The P4 has a SD card, the Rodecaster has a micro SD Card. On their website, the Rodecaster mentions Micro SD up to 256 Gigs. The Podtrack P4 mentions card up to 512 Gigs. Both of those sizes are huge. Bluetooth: The Rodecaster has built-in Blue Tooth, the P4 has an optional BTA-2 Bluetooth option ($49) Recording Sample Rate: The Rodecaster records in 48khz/24-bit, the P4 is 44.1khz/16 bit. While I don't feel this makes that much of a difference (as in the end your podcast is listened to in earbuds, car speakers, and portable speakers). However, if you're doing anything with video, your video editor will be happy you have the ability to record in 48khz. Number of Tracks: The Rodecaster can record up to 8 tracks, the P4 records up to 4 Both units provide a stereo mixdown, and in addition to the mic inputs, they provide tracks for the pads. The Rodecaster has the ability to turn off the multi-track recording. Recording Into Your Computer Both send a stereo mix to the computer (great for live streaming), but the Rodecaster can also send map individual tracks to channels. Interface The Rodecaster has a touch screen. The P4 has a simple to use menu system. Markers The Rodecaster has the ability to add markers (which can be very useful for editing) While other room recorders have this feature the P4 does not ) Outputs The Rodecaster has 4 headphones out in addition to a stereo out. The Zoom P4 has four headphones out. Footprint:The Rodecaster is 14" X 11" the P4 4.1" X6.1.' This might be important for those with smaller desktops. The P4 is 1/4th smaller than the Rodecaster. For my friends across the pond the Rodecaster is 350 mm x 275 mm the Podtrack P4 is 112 mm x 155 mm Warranty: RodecasterPro: Limited 1-Year Warranty with 1 Additional Year upon Registration. (source BNH). Podtrack P4: Limited 1-Year Warranty (source BNH). If you're looking for a great sounding unit, and never need to record more than four sources, this is a great unit. Audio snobs will complain about the lack of ability to record in 48khz/24hz but 44.1/16 will be fine for something that is heard in-car speakers and earbuds. Some will complain about sliders vs knobs. The knobs help cut the footprint which gives you your desk back. If you want to achieve the tone of the rodecaster you will need to invest in some plugins. If you're on a budget and want an easy way to record separate tracks including the phone, this is worth checking out. Just don't drop it. Check out the Zoom Podtrack P4 The Zoom ZDM-1 Dynamic Microphone I must confess that the Electrovoice RE320 has been my mic for many years. It's also close to $300. The ZDM-1 comes with a pop filter, "stand" a cable, and headphones for $120. I didn't think it was fair to compare it to the RE320 so I pulled out the Rode Podmic (another microphone designed for podcasters for around $99). Both microphones are very well built, and when I kid about using them as a weapon, I'm not kidding. You need a sturdy stand to hold these up. The ZDM-1 has a great mount that screws into the bottom and just seems solid. The Rode Podmic also is well built. The Zoom ZMD-1 has 50 Hz to 18 kHz frequency response with tight bass and smooth highs enhance vocal tone for radio, podcasting, and more The Rode Podmic has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. In specs, it should pick up a bit more bass and a bit more high end. While neither one of these microphones sound bad, I thought I heard a little more high end and sibilance on the Zoom ZMD-1. The one thing that Audio Technica, Zoom, and other microphone companies need to quit doing is giving us microphone stands that are 100% completely worthless. While the TPS-4 stand that comes with the ZDM-1 is sturdier than the other worthless microphone stands, They are so short that you have to do a bizarre yoga pose to lean over to use it. Either invent a new mic stand as an accessory, or just include the clip/mount and lower the price. Nobody in their right mind is using the TPS-4 microphone stand. The Zoom ZHP-1 Headphones were amazingly clear. The high end was crystal clear to an almost alarming point. The somewhat self-adjusting headphones fit nice and snug and really cut out the outside world. I used other "included" headphones with other microphones and they were typically uncomfortable and had the fidelity of a record cut out of a cereal box (you have to be over 50 to get that). These had a nice sound, and I love that the cable can be disconnected at the headphones (great for those of us who are always tangled in or headphone cable. For $199 this a good value with a solid mic, nice pop filter, study mount and comfortable headphones to boot. Just pick up a nice boom arm (are strong desk stand as it is heavy). August Question of the Month: What Keeps You Going? This month the question was, "What has kept you going with your podcast when others have stopped?" Kris and Kristine from the Kris and Kristine Show Kris and Kristine are engaged and this is just another great way of spending time together. (everyone together - awww....). Kristine said, " I'm big on trying to constantly strengthen our relationship. And there's a lot of research that says, for a woman, when she invests in the hobbies and the interests of her partner, then it really helps to build that bond. And so Kris could have loved going to golf or you could have had all these hobbies that take you out of the house and away from me, but instead, you choose to build and grow a hobby with me. What woman wouldn't want that from her significant other that you want to spend dedicated time with me? These are super nice peeps and I wish them the best when they get married in November. Check out their show at www.krisandkristine.com Curtis Longellow from the Rerozest Podcast Curtis Longfellow from the Retrozest podcast needed an outlet. He wanted to talk about all things retro (70's and 80's) and by starting a podcast he attracted other people who are just like him. It turns out it's really paid off. Diane Franklin, the actress who portrayed Monique Juno in the classic 80s dark comedy film Better Off Dead, granted me an interview in celebration of the 30 fifth anniversary of the film. In fact, it just posted yesterday. The other thing that keeps me going is the power of podcasting network shows. In fact, via Episode Number 678 of the School of podcasting, you really prepared me for the aforementioned interview with Diane Franklin. What was supposed to only be a 45-minute interview ballooned into an hour and 15 minutes. This was largely because the tips you shared on Episode Number 678 really prepared me and helped me to frame and ask some very unique questions, which kept the stories from Diane flowing. Additionally, you recently did a short review of my AC DC Back in Black 40th anniversary episode on your Podcast Rodeo Show. You shared several tips which helped me to plan for future episodes. And also you pointed out a glaring typo on my podcast description to which I immediately responded and corrected. Thank you for all you do. Dave. I suspect that your contribution to teaching about podcasting is really keeping a bunch of podcasters going, keep up the good work, and check out the retros s podcasts at retro zest.com forward slash podcast. Civilla Morgan from the Childless, Not By Choice (and Not Just Another Religion and politics Podcast) Here is what Civilla from the Childless, Not by Choice had this to say, "I believe I believe in the power of podcasting, I believe podcasting is a Message carrier. And I can see the results of it because of the response that I get. I may not be at a million downloads. But I'm hearing from people whose lives are literally being changed when they listen to the Childless, not by choice podcast episodes. They're writing into me. One woman just called me about a week ago from Holland on speakpipe on my website, and she left a message because she was so excited to find thes podcast, she couldn't believe it. And she had to tell me all about what episode she was on and how the podcast has completely absolutely helped her and that she just recently joined the Facebook group. I've got to keep going. I've got to keep getting the word out. Slowly but surely it can be tedious. There can be deep valley moments where you just want to throw everything across the room and just walk away from it all. And then those awesome mountain top moments where you get that awesome interview, like when I got that interview with you, Dave Jackson. And so you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to podcasting and I just love that I can get the message out whether it's the Childless, not by choice podcast, or the Not just another religion and politics podcast where I get to say my part as to how the Christian community is behaving (or misbehaving right now), in some instances. It's just a way to get the word out to get your message out. It's truly a message carrier. And that's why I'm still podcasting. Craig Wealand from Ingles Podcast Here are the reason Craig keeps podcasting: I podcast with a co-host, who I've known for many years. He's a very good friend. And it's a lot of fun to get together with him. once every three weeks, batch record some episodes, then have a nice lunch together and just hang out, just be with someone who I really like. We have a laugh, we have fun together. So one big element of the fun I get from podcasting is getting together with my friend and colleague. I think we're helping people with our product when I know we're helping people, we get feedback, voice messages, emails, telling us that because of the podcasts, we've helped people, get promotions, find a job pass an exam in English, so we know that we're doing some good out there and then keeps us going the feedback from our community. I really like the podcasting community. They're a great bunch of people. And I enjoy hanging out with podcasters. I feel very comfortable when I'm with podcasters. And, and over the years, I've made some really good friends in the podcasting community going to events and conferences, and meeting people online. So I really like being part of the community. And it's much easier to be part of the community if you have a podcast. I think I really like creating something that wasn't in the world before. Hopefully, that's a good thing. It might be a bad thing. But I like the idea that we've put something out there that might be of use to people and it didn't exist before we turned on the microphones. I like the idea that I've created something. Check out Craig at Ingles Podcast Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting I've always said that podcasting scratches every itch I have. It is somewhat technical, and I'm somewhat of a geek. You are in 100% control and you can do anything you want. As a creative person, I love that. I get to help people. As someone with a teaching background, that puts a lot of "Gas in my tank." As someone who spent myself into bankruptcy trying to have children (and failed), this is somehow my "Legacy." Check out all of Dave's shows at www.powerofpodcasting.com September Question of the Month Right now, I'm obsessed with the word, Interesting. When you hear the word interesting, what comes to your mind. If someone who spoke another language and asked you to explain what Interesting mean, how would you describe it. Feel free to "riff" on your thoughts of interesting, and explain any examples of content you feel is interesting. I need your answer by September 25th, 2020. So I have that for both the Neumann and Shure mics. I do add a little post-processing for podcasts and YouTube videos with just some light compression... normalization, then clip gain matching to -16 lufs. Everything exported to .wav for videos and editing. eventually .mp3 for podcasting to... Soundcloud(!) I know, but it works best for me (I can explain). Thanks for hanging with us, Brodie! The Rode Rodecaster Pro has caught the attention of many podcasters, and some have pulled the trigger. Jim Harold (Paranormal podcast) and Jeff Bradury from Teachercast have purchased the unit. I want to thank Rode for shipping me a unit to play with. Their first impression was amazing. Is It Worth the Money? If purchased a four channel mixer a popular mixer is the Behringer Q1202USB is $119 A Mackie Headphone Amplifier is $40 A Jingle pallet can cost you $10 (Backpack Studio on iOs) but you'll need a phone or a tablet A portable recorder at its cheapest is $119 for a Zoom H1N The Aphex processing would cost you $345. Total Price: That would be $120+40+10+120+345 = $635 The Rodecaster Pro clocks in at $599 and you avoid all the cabling all over the place. You don't have to learn about "Gain staging" and if you're using a half decent microphone, you're going to sound great. Spec Sheet PDF Quick Start Guide Jeff Bradbury of Teachercast 9:51 Jeff Bradbury from the Teachercast loves his Rodecaster Pro Jeff had a situation where he needed to interview someone over the phone and it turned out great. Jeff points out that if you're using something external for mix-minus, you might hit a snag He also wishes it came with a Micro SD card. He has worked with it on Skype and Zoom. Jeff is using a Mac If you're a teacher, check out everything Jeff has to offer at www.teachercast.net Jim Harold From the Paranormal Podcast 14:21 Jim Harold has been podcasting since 2005 and produces the Paranormal Podcast, Campfire, Crime Scene along with being the author of many books (all available at www.jimharold.com ) Jim loves the ease of use and enjoys having a noise gate to cut out room noise when he's not talking. He really loves the sound the unit is producing. At the time of the recording, Jim had used it for 4-6 new episodes. Jim has used a Sound Devices Mixpre-3, and a Zoom L12, but really loves the sound he is producing with the Rodecaster. Jim also records a show with his wife called Soulmate Stories and it makes it super easy to pull in people who want to share their stories check it out at http://www.soulmatestoriespodcast.com Jim also hopes in the future there is a way to access recording without having to take the micro SD card out. Jim is also on a Mac. Jim also feels that while he doesn't miss having separate tracks for each person, it would be nice to offer this option in the future. Dave Jackson's Rodecaster Review First of all, I was blown away by the package that was sent to me from the Rode people. This was my first interaction with this company, and I'm not sure I've experienced such a great first impression. I love that you can configure this in minutes. You simply pair the unit with your phone and you're off and running. I used it on Saturday for a live show using Google Hangouts and also on a Group Coaching call using zoom.us and while Rode says it's not set up for the USB to be "mix minus" it appears to work. I like that you can reset the timer if you make a flub and want to start again without stopping the recording. I love the built-in headphone amplifier (don't miss the 3.5mm on the front if you are flying solo). I have my headphones plugged into one, and my studio monitors into another. I am having a slight playback issue (I'm the only one of the three using a new Windows machine). I also hate the MicroSD Card and would love to drag and drop the files to my computer without having to take the card out. I wish there was a pause button so if something goes wrong you could pause the recording. I also wish there was a pause on the jingle buttons so if you wanted to stop and comment on something and then resume your could. In my tests using the TRRS cable made myself sound better to the caller, but decreased their volume. The blue tooth option made the caller louder, but I sounded "not as good" to the caller (but still usable) While Dave doesn't miss separate tracks (but admittedly he is interviewing podcasters who have decent audio quality) he does wish there was a tad more control over the tone. A Weird Playback Issue on Windows 46:18 I had a weird playback issue that apparently does not go into the recording. It is somewhat like a "buzz" that only I hear (not the people on the call. As I just recently got my unit and started putting it through the paces I am the only person I know having these issues. I have contacted Rode support to see if there is something on my end. I have found that whatever program I'm using if I temporarily switch what I'm using for a microphone it goes away. Microphone Shootout The Rode Procaster vs the Electrovoice RE320 52:54 The Rode Procaster has a very warm sound to it. While I didn't have a pop filter on it, but not talking directly into it I had no popping issues. The RE320 has a nice clear sound and really there is no bad choice here. For me, I've been using the RE320 for years. I enjoy the clarity, and the tone doesn't seem to change much if I get close to the mic. The Rode Procaster is $189. The Electrovoice RE320 is $299. If you are looking for the warmth of a Heil Pr40 without the $327 price tag, you might give it a shot. There is a WS2 Windscreen for the Procaster if you want one. Best Uses Of the Rodecaster Pro If you are doing a podcast where up to four people are in the room, and you want a very short learning curve through the technology, this is the unit for you. You just need to: Do your best not to talk over each other (although channel one can be set as the "top dog" with a ducking feature which turns everyone down) There is no way to tell how much time is left, or how long a jingle will be playing. With this in mind, don't have music you have to "talk up" and then have the music fade in. This would take some practice, or the music you are talking over has to be OBVIOUS when it's time to fade it back in. With the above items, with a little planning ahead you can sound like an old radio pro in minutes. So if you have a co-host(s) and occasionally have a guest who wants to call in via the phone - this is THE solution. How I Managed Live Calls on the Ask the Podcast Coach Last Week Last week I used the Rodcaster Pro to take phone calls on a live streaming program. I used Google Live (formerly Google Hangouts on Air) for my video. I if you just want audio you can use a tool such a mixlr.com to stream your audio to your audience, or spreaker.com which also will stream audio. To create a call queue, I use callinstudio.com. I attached my phone to the Rodecaster Pro via Bluetooth, and called my host number at callinstudio.com and gave out the callinstudio.com phone number for the callers. I monitor the calls via callinstudio.com and can add them to the call, or drop them if needed. They came through and sounded great.

Today I want to share what I do to put together an episode. My example will be the the latest episode of the Logical Weight Loss Podcast. I also do a podcast microphone shootout with microphones in the $300 range (last week we did a shootout with microphones that are under $100) This Week's Sponsor: Emerald City Productions This week's show is sponsored by Emerald City Productions. Get your podcast edited and sounding great with this awesome special. Your first four episodes will be $15 each (after that they go to the regular price of $40). Those people got to know Joe, and through his podcast they knew what his credentials were, and offered him a job. Find Joe at SuperJoePardo.com Being the Scenes Of Making a Podcast Episode So I had someone who was surprised at the amount of work that might go into a podcast. So this week as I prepared to publish an episode of the Logical Weight Loss Podcast, I took notes. There is one key point here. Length of time spent on and episode does NOT equal more downloads. You can spend all day working on content that doesn't connect with you audience. So here is what I did. First based on the ideas in the book [easyazon_link identifier="0849921902" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Secrets of Dynamic Communications: Prepare with Focus, Deliver with Clarity, Speak with Power[/easyazon_link] I came up with my main idea. Which is, "Based on mainstream media, it is easy to feel out of place if you are alone for the holidays. This along with the numerous activities of the holidays can lead to stress, and stress can lead to emotional eating." That is where I started. Here is a little confession. Last year I was "Alone" for the holidays. It turned out it wasn't that bad. Different? Sure. Bad? Nope. I wanted to help anyone who might be feeling down for the holidays. So I set out for strategies and insights for those who are alone on the holidays. I started with Google. I looked through about 10 articles, and ended up reading five. I pulled from my own experiences. I looked into resources for people who really were in a bad place and then made sure they were legit. I then went down a rabbit hole, when I found iPrevail. A pretty cool website that offers live chat for those who need to talk, and for those who want to go deeper, the offer some online courses. Intrigued, I signed up and took one. Note: This wasn't needed to complete the episode, but I always go with the thought "If it interests me, it probably interests my audience." I then looked at the holidays, and tried to find things that might be entertaining. I injected some humor to stop the episode from being so dark. I found examples I thought people could relate to (overly gushy Jewelry commercials), decorating a Christmas Tree, and weird family members. All of these to point out that the holidays are not a world of splendor filled with Rainbows and Lollipops. I took some time to figure out what topics I wanted to hit first. In other words, I tried to take the smattering of ideas and organize them into a stream of ideas that flowed nicely. I also through in a quick segment on an egg cooker I recently purchased. Finally I recorded it. My show notes were pretty done as I now make my show notes first to organize my thoughts. I recorded directly into my [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCXMBES" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Zoom H5 Four-Track Portable Recorder[/easyazon_link] , and then took that recording and put it into Hindenburg Journalist ,and added the intro and outro music along with some transition music. If you need music check out podcastingresources.com. I uploaded the file to Libsyn.com and copied and pasted the file into my Wordpress (as this is an old site, I'm still using the PowerPress plugin, if this was a new show I would use the Libsyn plugin). Use the coupon sopfree when signing up at Libsyn.com to get a free month (in addition to the current month) . Podcast Microphone Shootout $300 Range All prices are based on Amazon. You would still need a pop filter or Wind Screen I had set the volume the same for all microphones and found them all were about the same. You might want to pick up a Fet head to boost the signal of the PR40 Electrovoice RE320 ( fully Loaded $507) Microphone #3 is the [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCN83VI" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]EV RE320 Variable-D Dynamic Vocal and Instrument Microphone[/easyazon_link] which costs $294. The [easyazon_link identifier="B003BQ2DKK" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Electro-Voice 309A Suspension Shockmount (for RE20 or RE27ND)[/easyazon_link] is $99. Here again you need a pop filter, or a Windscreen and a Rode PSA1 boom arm. Why Did We Hear Microphone #3 Twice? (the RE320) because it has a bass roll off switch, and for me (my opinion) I thought that was the best of the tree. The first two (to my ear) sounded almost identical. I love the shock mount for the BP40 (it is specially made fpr the microphone and makes getting the mic in and out super easy. According to my kitchen food scale, the RE320 was the heaviest at 1.7 lbs, the BP40 was 1.66 lbs, and the PR40 was only 13.7 oz. Here again, there is no bad choice. I use the Eletrovoice RE320, and none of the other microphones moved me to lose this mic. In the end the difference between the three was minimal in my non "audio snob" ears. How Podcasting Helped My First TV Appearance I was interviewed on the Golden Opportunities show this week (it will air at 11:30 AM EST on Channel 3 in Cleveland on December 11). Here was the process: The goal was to explain podcasting to people over 55. I had a phone call with the show runner and we talked for 10 minutes. From that the show runner picked the parts that she liked, and explained the answers that I provided that fit their audience. I didn't have to memorize the answers (but I more or less did). The segment would be four questions. I practiced the night before, and I practiced the morning before. On the way up to Cleveland, I kept botching at least one answer. I wasn't blowing it, but it wasn't smooth. I came up with words that would trigger a response that would help me remember the answers. I had a feeling I might "mess up" a little bit. In the end I did slightly have a flub, but because of podcasting I caught it, clarified and continue. I didn't freak out. All those "Ask the Podcast Coach" live sessions on Saturday helped me keep my cool. Podcast Glossary "F" Feed A feed is a file that contains all the details of a podcast. The feed is often generated by your media host, or plugin, and is read by apps that then use that details to show the details on a screen (computer, phone, or tablet). FeedburnerFeed burner is tool from Google that can take an RSS feed and add additional items to the feed. You also get stats on how many people are subscribed. Feedburner is deemed by many experts to be out of date and a prime cause for many trouble tickets for podcasting hosting providers (it often stops updating your feed and has been shown to scramble the show description and the episode descriptions). While it was once recommended in 2006, most podcast consultants tell their customers to steer clear of this now outdated tool. FetHead Fethead is a microphone amplifier that delivers 22 DB of clean gain to your microphone. So if you are using a microphone that needs a “push” to be louder, then you might try plugging your microphone into the Fethead. FTP FTP stands for file transfer protocol. In a nutshell, there are two ways to upload files. Http stands for hypertext transfer protocol. Of those two ftp is faster. It requires a separate program to upload files. The Electro-Voice RE320 is my favorite podcasting microphone. Here's the story of how Rick Belt created this studio dynamic mic from the RE20 and RE27N/D.

Podcasting News: Midroll Purchased by Scripps - Another shot of legitimacy for podcasting? Ask the Double Rainbow Guy The article mentions CPM (the amount you make per 1000 downloads) of $100. This seems unrealistic to what I typically hear ($15 - $30 CPM). Honda's 2016 Accord will have the ability to have Apple Car Play, and Android Auto. Full Story Podcast Rewind: I recently was asked back on the Coachzing Show talking why podcasting is here to stay. I did a webinar with Steve Stewart on Podcast Workflow for his Audacity Workshop its only available for a limited time I started listening to the Tim Ferriss show, and the one thing that he us just AWESOME at is follow up questions. When he interviewed Rick Rubin he asked how Rick got into the 99 Problems video by Jay Z. At the end of the answer Rick says, "He is one of my favorite people." To this Tim instantly asks, "Why do you say that?". Later when he interviews Glenn Beck he asks about Glenn's dilema of having to hire a large amount of people to build his Blaze network. Glen explains who he hired first. He said he knew within the first three minutes of their initial meeting that this woman was going to be hired. To this Tim instantly asked, "What did she say to make such an impression on you." It's an interesting show, and he has interviewed so many big names, that you can "cherry pick" episodes of just those people you like. Podcast Microphone Shoot Out Audio Technica 2020 (condensor XLR/USB $99) Audio Technica 2100 (Dynamic XLR/USB $59) Audio Technica BP40 (Dynamic XLR $349) Electrovoice RE320 (Dynamic XLR $299). You will hear that all these microphones sound great. I recommend podcasters NOT use a condensor microphone (2020). In listening to the 2005 vs the BP40. The 2100 seemed to carry more bass (odd as they have the same bass frequency). There is a low cut switch on the BP40 if you want to cut frequencies below 100 (these are so low, these are almost frequencies you feel more than hear). The one thing that hit me right out of the gate is this microphone can double as a weapon. Its super solid, looks good, and just seem heavy duty. I really liked the AT8484 shock mount that is designed to be used with the microphone. It has a super slick lock that allows you to slide it in and out with ease (not that most of us will be switching microphones, but it is cool). As the shock mount is designed for the unit, it holds it well. I have a "off the shelf" shock mount for the RE320 and it seems a little strained to hold it (so here again sticking with factory stuff, even though slightly more expensive might be the way to go). Test One: Gain How much gain is coming out of the microphone? All of the microphones seemed to need the same amount of gain. It seemed like the BP40 did provide a little more (and needed less gain). Test Two: Tone The ATR2100 (for me) had the most pleasing tone. Plenty of low and high end. The RE320 was the clearest, and the BP40 had a smooth sound (but didn't have the hi end of the RE20) What is my first impression? I love the look of the BP40. It's super rugged. It's super solid. I LOVE the shock mount that is an accessory as it is SUPER EASY to snap the microphone in and out. Test Three: How much room noise does it pick up? I put a fan on in the background and turned the radio on lightly. None of the microphones (accept the 2020) would pick up a noticeable amount of room noise. Can you hear it? Yes, but only if you are in a quiet room listening through headphones. Of the 2100, the bp40, and the RE320, it seemed the BP40 seemed to pick up the most room noise (but again, the amount of noise was something you would really have to strain to hear). For me, for the money and the flexibility I still like the Audio Technica 2100. Now, the ATR2100 is not as durable as the BP40 or the RE320. These are microphones designed to be in a broadcast booth. They (the BP40 and the RE320) definitely have different tones (the RE320 is more clear). Keep mind you want your voice to not be abrasive or distracting. So having too much high end, or too much low end can ruin your tone. The more I use the BP40, it's really growing on me especially when I run it through my DBX 286 microphone preamp. Bottom Line: I couldn't really pick one that was miles above the others. I liked all the microphones, and when run through a mixer where you can boost and cut the EQ I was able to pull out any tone I wanted. None of them had any major proximity effect issues. I like the look for the BP40 more then the RE320. As always tone is a very subjective, and in the end it depends on how the microphone works with your voice. Which one did you like? Today we have Kenn Blanchard sitting in the co-host chair. Kenn is the man behind the Black Man With a Gun podcast, and is the author of Black Man with a Gun Reloaded. Dave has fun figuring out that spreaker.com is listening to the microphone, and not Dave's USB interface. That caused Kenn to be MIA on spreaker for a while. Optimizing for iTunes [5:31] Keep in mind that nobody really knows what works in iTunes. I know that I can type in Podcasting and my show(s) don't always show up. People will use pipes like this Podcasting name | key word | key word You can try this, but there is no real stats to show this works. It would be better to make easy to remember links using the Pretty Link Plugin. New Mixer [10:23] I purchased a Mackie 1202 VLZ3 off of ebay for $130. I could've got it new from Same Day Music for 2 payments of $135, but went for the used version (not sure I'm happy with that, there seems to be a slight buzz). The new version is the 1202 VLZ4 In researching this, the noise is from the iPad and it seems louder when the iPad is plugged into the computer. Using Libsyn.com as Your Website [15:44] Bill from the ywampodcast.com (Youth with a Mission) wants to know what I think about using Libsyn as not only a media host but also a web site (for those who are on a budget). The Libsyn website portion has very little options for those who don't know code. You need to know HTML to to any editing. For me I'd rather avoid the headache and either get a Wordpress (self hosted) blog with a company like Hostgator (use the coupon code podcastcoach to save 25%) . Another (free) option is to use Tumblr.com which now can be published to directly from Libsyn.com You can get a free month at Libsyn.com using the coupon code sopfree Mike Phillips on Microphones For People in the UK [17:30] You can find Mike at www.computer2know.com Mike explains that there seems to be no service for phones that is 100% reliable. He mentions that Blog Talk Radio has horrible audio, but their phone interface easy to use. Getting an ATR2100 in the UK. Mike recommend that's the Samson Q2U is fairly The Heil PR40 is a nice microphone, but its fairly expensive by the time you get the stand and all. A better microphone in that price range is the RE320 from Electro Voice. It has a more accurate representation of your voice, and you don't have to be up on top of it (and if you are the tones don't change). Using Same Day Music you can make two payments of $150 to get this microphone. BSW has a package right now for the RE320 with a shock mount and pop filter for $399 (the pop filter alone is about $70 with shipping) Shout Engine Media Hosting - No Thank You [25:30] Shoutengine.com is a new media hosting that: Renames your files Changes the sample rate Provides an RSS feed that is invalid Messes with your ID3 tas. Mike is testing cloudpale.com Too Much Focus on Making Money? [37:30] Mike mentions that there have been "Snake Oil" salesmen in every form of media over the years, and now its coming to podcasting. The Electro-Voice RE320 is designed for musicians, but it can also work great for podcasters. This dynamic mic sells for only $299, and its sound reproduction is much better than the Heil PR40.
