Earlier this month, millions of voters got to pick a president: Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. But what if we had a totally different kind of election system, one where you could rank a bunch of people you'd like as president, instead of being forced to choose between just two viable options? Listener William wants to know: Why hasn't ranked-choice voting taken off? And could it be the fix for our super polarized politics? Jonquilyn Hill goes to Vox senior correspondent Dylan Matthews for some lunch ordering strategy, Hollywood trash talk, and, most importantly, answers.   Is there something you're dying to figure out? This has been an unusual week. Sean and the TGA team are still sifting through it all and figuring out what to think about the presidential election. In the meantime, our colleague Jonquilyn Hill has leapt into action. She and her team from the Explain It to Me podcast collected lots of listener questions in the aftermath of Trump's victory, and took them to the Vox reporters who know the most about what happened and what it all means. We'll be back with a new episode on Monday. Until then, check out Explain It to Me. ________________________ Wow, what a week. The country has a new president-elect, and our listeners have a ton of questions about what comes next. Why did Latino voters swing right? How will Democrats respond? What's going to happen to Donald Trump's court cases? Will Trump really do all the things he said he would during the campaign? There are things that you can just go back to again and again and again, but you can go back in and add to them and make them more robust and more readable and more interesting as you think of things to say or as your business evolves, and it keeps things fresh.""Educating your client is always top of the list, but having posts that you can reuse and reuse like this is gonna help you so much, not just in your response to clients so you have more stuff to send them but with your SEO.""Remember, people aren't going to be feeling like you're repeating yourself. You'll feel like you're repeating yourself because you're gonna be talking about the same thing you just blogged about all week long or maybe for the next two weeks, and that's gonna seem redundant to you, but for most people they're hit with so much information that it takes them a few times hearing your message before they go. Oh, I remember that she's offering this or she talked about this or whatever it is."

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be? Brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. #EEUU #Republicanos #Democratas #Filibuster #Obstruccionismo #Biden #Impeachment #Podcast #SinCódigo #Politica --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sincodigo/message

FOMO In Action I was at Social Media Marketing World in 2018 enjoying a networking event on an aircraft carrier in San Diego California. I was contacted by Michael Oneil as he and a few friends were going to go to a club called Prohibition and wanted to know if I would want to attend. Did I say it was a club? Prohibition is a speakeasy. I have never been to a speakeasy. The door that you go through shows "LAW OFFICE Eddie Onare, ESQ."  When we arrived there was an actual velvet rope. We had to wait. It myself, Michael O’Neal, Harry Durran, and Natalie Jennings. The anticipation was mounting. How long will I have to wait? Are we going to get in at all? Finally, the bouncer unclipped the rope and let us in. I remember walking through a door and going downstairs. It was getting darker and darker as we went on. When I finally get to the bottom and look around, I see a bar in front of me. I see a bench to the left of me. I see a few chairs to the right of me. It is dimly lit, with red lights in the ceiling. I think to myself. "Someone turned their basement into a bar." Don't get me wrong, it was cool. Michael and I ended up playing and singing that night with the saxophone player from Pink Floyd. But I can't underestimate the buzz and anticipation by the scarcity. This is a tactic called Fear of Missing Out (FOMO for short), and today we are going to talk about Clubhouse. This is an app (currently only available for iOs) and one of the things that is fueling the buzz about this app is their use of FOMO.  Clubhouse: Drop-in audio chat Don't get me wrong, this app is cool. However, it's zoom without video and better moderation. Why is it so popular? You have to be invited in (OOOOOH!). It is only on iOs (sorry android people) so here again, only certain people can get in, and for those on the outside when you hear others talking about it, you have fear of missing out. Does it work? I'm doing an episode about it knowing that 75% of my audience can't use it.  What Clubhouse is Good For Why I like clubhouse is I'm finding my target audience, and more importantly, my target audience who doesn't know me yet.  Then I can LISTEN, and take notes of what is being discussed and take notes as these might be future episodes.  I have found a few people I want to connect with due to the details in their profiles, and the value they brought if they actually spoke.  Mistakes in Clubhouse If you don't have an answer to a question and someone asks you, just say, "That's a good question that I don't have an answer to." If you don't, often the answer you spew is not helpful and makes you look like an idiot in love with their own voice.  Not filling out your profile with your website, your interests, and keywords to help you get found.  Ask ing a question that is three seconds long followed by self-promotion that is three minutes long.  Most of the true networking happens outside of the app so be sure to check your Twitter and Instagram for DMs. I'm on Android - I Feel Left Out If you look at what clubhouse is at its core is its a group of people (in rooms) that are joining hoping to talk about their favorite subject, meet people, and learn new insights.  So do it on zoom. Reach out to other podcasts like yours and pick a date to all get together on Zoom. Assign a moderator, and promote for weeks in advance.  Everyone and their brother knows how to connect to zoom. The goal here is not to get podcast ready quality (cause the quality on Clubhouse is "ok"), but more the connection.  There are also other tools like Slack, Discord. There are tools like Mastodon where you can setup your own social media network.  There will be Copycats - There Always Is Twitter Spaces is coming The issue with Android (from what I understand) is while all the different phones are running Android operating systems, there is enough differences between phone manufacturers to create headaches for app developers.  Android Apps Like Clubhouse Connect Club ( maybe? it shows a Google Play Version) Bag Chat This is either another clubhouse or something creepy Michael Stelzner's Awesome Clubhouse Tutorial Great tutorial see https://youtu.be/o7gv7U-rZl8 How Are You Pulling Clubhouse Into Your Podcast? First, this is not entirely compliant with their terms of service. Their terms say I need written permission from participants. I make a notice in the show name, the show description, and when I pull someone on the stage, I ask for their permission to record them. This is still not written, but it is verbal. Please remember, I'm a teacher - not a lawyer.  These Devices Make It Easy The Zoom Podtrak P4 ($200) The Zoom Podtrak P8 ($499) The Rodecaster Pro ($599) How? All of these make it super easy to connect a phone. I have three things in my Ask the Podcast Coach. I have myself, clubhouse, and a co-host.  I plug my microphone (RE320) into the Rodecaster. I plug my iPhone (via a connector) into a TRRS cable that goes into the Rodecaster.  When I connect the Rodecaster via USB I am able to send and receive audio to my cohost who I connect with via Streamyard. Everybody can hear everyone.  Using Streamyard. I stream live to my YouTube Channel. I record on the Rodecaster using the separate tracks option (as the audio from clubhouse can have a wide variance).  See video https://youtu.be/BsG9UD6nzlE I Almost Lose 15 Years of My Podcast I had my WD 4 Terabyte crash and with it 15 years of podcasting files (all my sound effects, artwork, music, EVERYTHING). It was going to cost me between $700-$1000 to have someone rescue my Drive. Luckily I use Backblaze who walked me through. I am paying $189 to have them save all my files (which are online) to a hard drive and ship it to me. Then I will copy my files to a new hard drive and then ship their hard drive back. I will then be refunded the $189.  Backblaze is my hero. It's been wonderful to be able to talk to so many like-minded people from all over the country and even the world to have important meaningful conversations. The podcast provides Josh with a platform where he feels like He's not a helpless bystander forced to do nothing more than complain about the lack of substance and civility and depth in our national political dialogue. Instead, through the podcast, he feels like an active participant in that conversation.  He is grateful for podcasting for providing me this platform. podcasting has been for me, a real lifesaver. The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the US Congress, ratified by 38 states, and enacted in 1967, to prepare for a situation in which a sitting U.S. president is no longer capable of performing his or her duties. It is divided into four sections. The last section begins: “Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.” When President Trump returned to the White House last Monday night after a weekend at Walter Reed Medical Center, it appeared to many that the medications he had been given to treat his infection with the Coronavirus might be affecting his mental status and intellectual capabilities. In a few rambling, sometimes incoherent interviews, it appeared to some observers that he was not completely in control of his faculties. On Friday morning, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and MD 8th District Congressman Jamie Raskin announced legislation to create a commission to “help ensure effective and uninterrupted leadership” in the Presidency. What would such a commission do? Why did the Speaker and her caucus see the need to introduce this legislation at this moment? Natalie Jennings, the editor of The Fix -- a live weekly news chat at the WashingtonPost.com -- joins Tom on Zoom to help us understand the House move on the 25th Amendment Commission bill. She also brings us up to date on the stalled COVID relief bill and the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Supreme Court Justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

Natalie Jennings just went the minimalist route, sold most of her “stuff,” and will be setting out to explore new places this fall. She is a photographer, podcaster, teacher, and the founder of A Face Project, which received a 2013 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. Her photo work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, and Mojo. The Goal Don’t we all crave more flexibility and control over our time? For Natalie, this was always the motivator in her life. She wanted the kind of lifestyle where she wasn’t just living for weekends and vacations. You may think this lifestyle is “the impossible dream,” but Natalie explains how it can be achievable and accessible if you plan ahead.  TWEET: “The idea of going into the same workplace every day just didn’t resonate with me.” @afaceproject The Fire Have you ever felt the fire that spurs you on to something new? Like most of us, Natalie was busy, working hard to gradually chase her dreams. There came a time when teaching was not fulfilling and she felt the urgency of the FIRE that got her going to something new. You can make the same thing happen for you if you feel the fire to change your life! TWEET: “I thrive having complete #creative control over what I’m doing.” @afaceproject Let it Evolve Are you open to letting your vision evolve and grow? Sometimes, our ideas evolve into something we never envisioned. Natalie explains why you shouldn’t be too rigid, but be open to feedback and seeing how things go. We all need specific goals to help us be accountable and stay on track, but don’t limit yourself. Remember, EVERYTHING doesn’t have to be “on the table” at DAY ONE. TWEET: “I look at my #camera and realize it’s taken me to so many places.” @afaceproject   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream-chaser to take—“Make sure that you believe you can achieve your goal. Do whatever you need to do to have the positive mindset through the ups and downs of growing a business.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:27] Going minimalist [4:24] Intentional steps to minimalism [7:00] From teaching to photography [9:29] Falling in love with photography [11:06] Making this lifestyle WORK [13:12] Gradually chasing dreams through transition [14:44] Making it happen: Natalie’s plans to travel [17:16] Having confidence in what you do [18:20] How A Face Project was born and Natalie’s team was created [22:33] Being open to how your ideas evolve over time [25:34] Phone photos vs. camera photos [27:42] Advice to aspiring photographers: it comes down to persistence [31:30] How photo technology has changed over the years [32:44] Natalie’s favorite camera [34:14] Natalie’s ONE action    RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Website: www.afaceproject.com   and   www.nataliechampajennings.com Natalie on Instagram  Natalie on Twitter Natalie on Facebook: @njenningsphoto  and @afaceproject   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: “It all wasn’t ‘on the table’ on DAY ONE. Podcast Movement 2017 Refrelections

I'm back from podcast movement, and I had a blast. I also have insights from one of the hardest assignments I've done in a long time. My Impression of Podcast Movement 2017 Nothing cooler than being picked up at that airport by fellow podcasters Marcus Couch from WordPress Plugins A to Z. We haven't seen each other face to face in about 10 years. We cranked some cool metal on the way to the Marriot and it was like old times. Then I get the then Marriot and I get to meet my co-host Jim Collison from the Average Guy network, and I go over to his table and there sits the one and only Steve Stewart and Mike Dell. So for me, the Summar Camp aspect of Podcast Movement is in full effect. The coolest line I heard all week was relayed by Paul Colligan (another person' I've known for 10+ years) and it came from a Dan Klass session. Dan (who is a former comedian) shared how often at comedy clubs you will have multiple comedians perform in an evening - and yet they all use the same microphone. The point? It's not about the tech. I roomed with Erik K Johnson from podcasttalentcoach.com, and he had stated that it would be awesome if he could meet a web developer who needed help with his podcast, as he was a podcast consultant who needed help with his website. I get into the elevator, introduce myself to everyone in the elevator and it turns out that one of the people is a web designer thinking of starting a podcast. When we get out of the elevator, on of the first people who see is Erik. I felt like I was in a Christmas movie and it was going to start to snow. I saw Harry Durran from Podcast Junkies and Dr. Ryan Gray who has given up his practice to do podcasting full time and Harry introduces me to Natalie Jennings who happens to be taking head shots at a reasonable price. She shows me a few samples of people, and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see how they turn out. The few peaks I saw of what she did was amazing. See her at http://www.nataliechampajennings.com/ I found out in Paul Colligan's session that if you are in Google Play Music, you are also on the Google Home portable audio speaker. I also know of a cool double secret project that is going to make recording double-enders via a browser very cool. I was on a panel with Ray Ortega, Daniel J. Lewis, and Addy Saucedo on what is inside an RSS. This was an insanely nerdy topic, but due to the recent Apple announcements we had some interested parties and I thought we pulled it off well. The bonus is I got to hang out with some cool friends. The Coolest Thing I Saw At Podcast Movement 2017 While there were tons of great sessions at PM17, as a vendor (I work for Libsyn.com - use the coupon code sopfree to get a free month) I don't get to attend any sessions. I did see something that was way cool. I met Alissa Daire of the Maximize Your Strengths show. I see her the first night, and she is in a group of people and we get talking about Strengths Finder, and she becomes a ping pong ball bouncing off the ceiling with energy. She's super nice, and it was great to catch up with her as I had met her last year. The next night, I'm standing at the Luau event, and here she comes. She explains how "I'm done." She's tired (as many people are), and she is considerably less energetic. Pat Flynn walks over, he's very witty and a super nice guy. Then the subject changes to strengths finder results, and it was like watching a time release video of a flower blooming. Her energy came back, her smile came back, her body language completely changed. It was amazing to watch. I saw this a few more times. It's late, and people have had a few adult beverages, then I ask them about their show, and BOOM, the body language picks up, the eyes are open a bit wider, the voice is a little louder. Later, Paris from Gamertag Radio got star struck when Cara Santa Maria from the Skeptics Guide to the Universe walks by. I offered to go bring her over. He got shy, so I did my best Steve Austin (the six million dollar man, not the wrestler) imitation across the showroom floor. I had no idea she was an Emmy Award winning journalist. I bring her over and embarrass Paris. Danny Peña is there, Jim Collison is there, and the minute Paris explained that he really did listen to her show the body language changed.  For me, I think of it as being in your "first impression" mode and then finding out that you're among family. For the Best Content - Put a Time Frame On it I spoke about how I got lucky to be able to induct Dan Klass from the Bitterest Pill into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. The presentation should last three minutes. I had hoped that three minutes would be longer than I thought. I wrote out my first draft. It had some bits about history and podcasting in 2005. It had examples of how the show made me feel. I made a joke about how the more I talk about his show, the more I sound like a stalker. I listed his accomplishments. I started the stopwatch and went into the presentation, about half what through I glanced at my phone and I was already at 5 and a half minutes. Oh boy...... What Was the Purpose of This Presentation? I had to go back and ask myself, what was the purpose of this presentation? The purpose was for the person sitting in row 7 who had been podcasting since 2015 and had no idea who Dan Klass was. It wasn't about me. It wasn't about being funny. I was about answering the question, "Why is Dan Klass in the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame." For me, this was a big opportunity, on a big stage, and I didn't want to mess it up for myself, or Dan. It was time to edit. Anything about me went out the door. The history lesson of iriver portable players and synchronization cables went up in smoke. Most of the stories I had about Dan might not go over if you didn't listen to his show. Only the things that HAD to be said would stay. I listed his accomplishments. I thought of the funniest thing I had heard on his show (he referred to his two-year-old daughter as Princess Tirade for quite some time), and the most memorable episode (of ALL podcasting) is episode 102 Mass Murder where he talks about what it's like when your Uncle is murdered, and you're walking past TV cameras escorting your mother to the funeral. It's at the end, I highly suggest you listen to it. I had pointed out that Dan was one of the first to try premium podcasting (this was YEARS before Patreon) and it didn't work well. That was negative, so I just pointed out that he was a pioneer and not afraid to try new things. I HAD TO POINT OUT, that Dan had been sharing stories a DECADE before Serial was on the scene. Dan was creating engaging stories in a box in his garage, and he did it without a team of 19 people. That had to stay. To make it entertaining, I thought of throwing in some old Baptist preacher tricks of getting people to repeat words. This came to me in the shower. It would make me stand out, but I was deeply worried about being too entertaining (again, this was all about Dan). Looking back, that was a dumb thought (you're not going to outshine Dan Klass). Just Because There Are No Time Limits in Podcasting Doesn't Mean There Shouldn't Be To fine tune my presentation I had to: Identify my audience Identify the purpose Make it entertaining I know some of us want to record it and publish it. I truly, always believe a podcast can benefit from editing. This is especially true if you are doing interviews. Because of My Podcast Devin Caroll Devin from the Big Picture Retirement podcast shares how he didn't' want to start a podcast but sure is glad he did. He just released episode 34, and his co-host has already billed $10,000, and Devin has billed $6,000 and has a client who will bring in $20,000. I bet you might think, they have a huge audience, right? Nope, according to Devin, they are averaging 534 downloads an episode.
