Locked On UConn - Daily Podcast on University of Connecticut Huskies Football and Basketball
In this episode of Locked On UConn, we explore the unique, high-stakes history between two elite basketball programs: UConn and Gonzaga. From their first legendary clash in the 1999 Elite Eight to their most recent battles, this isn't a rivalry in the traditional sense but a compelling tale of two programs shaping modern college basketball. We examine the pivotal moments that defined both teams' trajectories, the coaches who built them into powerhouses, and what makes each matchup a must-watch. Whether it's Maui, March Madness, or neutral-site thrillers, UConn and Gonzaga always deliver when they meet on the court. Stay tuned for an in-depth breakdown of every game, key players, and what the future holds for this captivating story. The episode begins with an exploration of UConn and Gonzaga, two programs that have become emblematic of modern college basketball's evolution. While not a rivalry in the traditional sense, their shared history is filled with defining moments that shaped the trajectory of both teams. From UConn's rise to national dominance to Gonzaga's establishment as a mid-major powerhouse, these programs have intersected at critical junctures, beginning with their fateful first meeting in 1999. The first segment dives into the 1999 Elite Eight game in Phoenix, where UConn triumphed over Gonzaga in a hard-fought battle to reach their first Final Four. Led by Rip Hamilton and Kevin Freeman, the Huskies overcame a Gonzaga squad that was the tournament's Cinderella story. This game marked a turning point for UConn, paving the way for their first national title, and also served as Gonzaga's introduction to the national spotlight. It was the game that ignited two extraordinary basketball journeys. The second segment focuses on Gonzaga's transformation under head coach Mark Few. Since taking the reins in 1999, Few has built a remarkable legacy with a 723-145 record and two Final Four appearances. Gonzaga has achieved consistent excellence despite operating outside the traditional power structure of college basketball, without a football program or major conference backing. Few's program has become a model for sustained success, even as critics point to their conference schedule and struggles in high-pressure games. This segment reflects on how Gonzaga's rise began with that 1999 tournament and the identity they've cultivated in the years since. In the third segment, the discussion turns to the head-to-head history between UConn and Gonzaga. Every game in their series feels consequential, whether it's in the NCAA Tournament, a high-profile neutral-site event, or a December showdown. The recap covers their classic battles, including UConn's dramatic win in the 1999 Elite Eight, Denham Brown's game-winner in the 2005 Maui Invitational, and Gonzaga's breakthrough victory in 2007. The analysis highlights the stakes and storylines behind each matchup, culminating in UConn's dominant performances in 2023, including their Elite Eight rout of Gonzaga en route to their fifth national championship. The episode closes by reflecting on the unique legacy of this matchup. UConn and Gonzaga represent two distinct paths to basketball greatness, and their games always feel like a clash of titans. As the programs continue to evolve, their meetings remain a reminder of the high stakes and drama that make college basketball special. Looking ahead, the podcast teases what the future holds for these two storied teams and their next chapter on the hardwood.FanDuel Ad Copy The best part about being a sports fan?

In the summer of 2007, coming off some of the worst stretch of his career with the Lakers, Kobe Bryant demanded a trade. One likely destination? The Detroit Pistons, the same team that beat the breaks off the Lakers in 2004, ending a dynasty. The proposed package included variations of Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, Jason Maxiell, Amir Johnson, and some sort of combination of picks. Obviously, the trade never happened and Kobe retired a Laker legend, but what would we say about his legacy if he left the Lakers for the then temporarily dominant East? Shootaround: Is there no end to this pandemic? The NBA is struggling to keep its players in check and we are facing down a possibility of another postponed season. Also, Serge refuses to acknowledge that the NFL season ever happened.

Episode 20 of the Goin' to Work podcast starts out with the boys adjusting to not having Mad Mack's rants to start the episode. The Commish, Steady Eddy, and The Legend dive into the details of the Tigers schedule and how important it is to get off to a hot start with a shortened season. Is college football going to happen this year? Dominoes are starting to fall with the Ivy League schools not participating in any sports until the new year. The Palace of Auburn Hills is in ruins and ESPN disrespected Rip Hamilton with their dumbass post of the week. The MVP segment and Fab 5 segment are of course here again this week!
Fewer then 2% of NCAA Division 1 athletes go on to be pro's. I wonder what is the percentage of athletes that have gone on to play pro basketball that come from Eupora, Mississippi? Well Quentin Pryor held his own as a pro along way from home. We battled against each other in Wally's All Star game. I felt like I was chasing around Rip Hamilton. Pryor wasn't taking any plays off and O.G. Big Slim was doing his best to catch a dunk and breath at the same time. So today, I salute Mr Pryor, he had his Plan B in check after the cheering stopped.
Saying that, college was also a roadblock - getting recruited to play for LIU was something he wanted, but when paperwork gets in the way, you have to make other choices. Mac catches up with former UConn roommate and lifelong Huskies fan Jesse de Boer about the 1999 National Championship Game against Duke. Entering the game as a heavy underdog, UConn went toe to toe with the Blue Devils, getting some crucial offense early from Ricky Moore before Rip Hamilton took over in the second half to help put the Huskies ahead for good. A late defensive stop by Moore and a pair of clutch free throws by Khalid El-Amin would seal the deal, as the Huskies shocked the world to win the program's first national championship. Jesse and I discuss the game and its importance in the trajectory of UConn men's basketball's rise to national prominence, as well as all of the individual contributions that helped UConn stun what was thought to be among the greatest college basketball teams ever assembled. We also have a few observations that stood out upon rewatch, who did and didn't play as well as you may remember and more. Like what you hear? Want to offer feedback? We look at the 2004 Rasheed Wallace trade that led the Detroit Pistons to a championship and a run of Eastern Conference Finals appearances in the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. Kim Huston, co-host of the Basketball Party podcast, joins Jason Mann on the show to discuss what makes Wallace such a great player and character, his honesty and irreverence, his anger and passion, and break down the comparisons between Wallace and the recently traded DeMarcus Cousins. We also discuss how the 2000s Pistons were built by Joe Dumars, adding Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince by 2003, the playoff failures under Rick Carlisle in 2002 and 2003, some of the other key reserves, whether Lindsay Hunter or Chucky Atkins is the ultimate hipster Pistons uniform, Rasheed's reputation in seven years as a Portland Trail Blazer and his success and failures there, setting a league record for technical fouls, getting into fights with notorious ref Tim Donaghy, and playing one glorious game for the Atlanta Hawks. We also talk about how the Pistons changed once Rasheed came to the team, how little they ended up giving up in the trade, how the two Wallaces fits on offense and defens, the "Guaransheed" vs. the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, and dethroning the Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers (the team who had constantly beaten Rasheed's Trail Blazers in the 2004 Finals. Finally we talk about the rest of the Pistons' run of Eastern Conference Finals appearances between 2005 and 2008, losing in the 2005 Finals to the Spurs, Rasheed's gaffe of leaving Robert Horry open for a 3, losing to the Heat, Cavs and Celtics before falling off in 2009, how the Pistons differed from most great teams, and whether the mid-2000s Pistons or the late 2000s Celtics had a better run. Recorded at the start of the All Star Break, this episode is the perfect way to get ready for the second half of the NBA Season! Jordan and Ben are joined by Detroit Bad Boys contributor, Gabe FB. Gabe brings his expertise on all things Pistons. The episode starts by talking about the 'Goin to Work' Pistons, the recent retirement cermonies and what other Pistons may deserve the same treatment (Hint: Yes sir, we are talking about Rip Hamilton). Then the conversation moves into the team's recent struggles and Ben breaks down what he has seen so far. Gabe mentions the recent play of the team's forwards and that leads into the opening of the #AskDBB mailbag! Is the 8th seed good enough for this season? Jordan mentions the current landscape of the Eastern Conference, and gets the opinion from everyone on this year's expectations. Gabe and Ben go back-and-forth on Stan Van's plan and his long game. What can we decipher from recent moves made by SVG? Next, we look into the off-season. It seems inevitable, but the guys answer a question about the merits of "Andre Drummond: Max contract player." Then Jordan opens up the discussion on what 2016 free agents are worth a max contract from Detroit? Al Horford to the Pistons? Pairing AD with Chandler Parsons? Nic Batum, anyone? The episode wraps up with more discussion on the future of the Pistons. This is a must listen for all Detroit fans, a perfect way to get everyone ready for the rest of this season!
