I only played for about a half an hour before an Orange County Parks Department Employee came up to me. “Sir, you can play, you just can't be busking, alright?” the guy said, in what sounded like an Australian accent. “Why not?” I said. “It's against park rules.” “Really?” “Yeah.” “I called city hall. And I wasn't informed of that.” “You can play your instrument here, you just can't be busking, asking for money.” “I don't ask for money. I don't have a sign.” “OK then. OK cool. Cool.” “You sure?” “Yeah no worries.” But, as you'll hear, I did not think he thought it was cool. So, I left soon after. Foreign rights to Snow's books have been sold to publishers in Germany, Norway, Poland, Indonesia and Hungary. A former contributor to Salon's “Mothers Who Think” column, her writing has also appeared in The Los Angeles Review of Books and Park City Magazine. Carol Snow holds a BA in psychology from Brown University and an MA in teaching English from Boston College. Over the past few days, there has been controversy in the frequent-flyer community about the apparent extension of Silver and Gold status by BA to people who had done hardly any flying with the airline. Rob Burgess, founder of the Head for Points website, has been telling me more.A spokesperson for IAG Loyalty, which runs the scheme for BA, said: "Due to a technical issue, some members (fewer than 1%) were incorrectly told they had retained their status, when they hadn't earned it, or been entitled to it. Lessons from Davos and the New Economic Realities Returning from a bustling Davos, Ray Wang shares his observations on how global leaders and executives are tackling an era defined by uncertainty, rapid technology adoption and a relentless pursuit of efficiency. One of Ray's core takeaways is the prevailing theme of “margin compression,” where even the world's largest corporations are working harder than ever just to achieve modest growth. Companies are now measured by their ability to scale exponentially, as illustrated by India's ISRO launching rockets at a fraction of NASA's cost, fundamentally altering competitive dynamics across industries. Ray explains that the rise of AI turbocharges this transformation by opening up “infinite possibilities.” Companies no longer just compete on physical or financial assets, but on their ability to harness vast data resources, quickly innovate and make sharp strategic choices about what problems to solve—and, crucially, what not to do. Privacy challenges, especially for companies like Apple, arise in this new era, making it difficult to deliver world-class AI solutions while maintaining rigorous data protection standards. Both Christopher and Ray emphasize that managing growth, inflation and investment are more complex than ever, with the U.S. outpacing much of the world in GDP growth, yet operating in a global environment rife with policy and market uncertainties. AI, Tech Earnings, and the Rise of the New IPO Era The conversation pivots to the massive investment and exuberance surrounding generative AI and tech infrastructure. Ray points out that while there are fears about overbuilding capacity or creating a circular funding loop among AI companies, there is still significant real opportunity. The current phase has seen enormous capital pour into building data centers and scalable AI platforms. Landmark IPOs from OpenAI, Databricks and others are expected to reshape the tech landscape. Despite market fluctuations and some outsized reactions to earnings, the fundamentals for big tech remain robust. Companies like Apple have solidified their status as luxury brands, even as others like Tesla and Meta retool and pivot to sustain long-term relevance and unlock new revenue streams such as robotics and energy. At the structural level, venture capital itself is in flux. Many VC firms have become indistinguishable from private equity, constrained both by too much and too little available capital relative to the demands of today's tech startups. The gap between small angel, family office, or solo GP funds and the mega funds has widened so much that the “middle” has all but disappeared. It is now entirely possible for one-person companies, through the leverage of AI and autonomous agents, to achieve scale and revenues previously thought impossible. Ray predicts it is likely we will see a single founder build a billion-dollar annual revenue company within the next five years, echoing the democratization and disruption that generative AI promises. Building Legendary Companies and Careers in the Age of AI Christopher and Ray close their discussion by exploring what all these rapid changes mean for leaders and individuals. For CEOs and entrepreneurs, the formula for thriving is clear but audacious. Leaders must design their companies to be fully autonomous and authentic, constantly reinventing their business as if they were attempting to disrupt themselves. Boards need to be stacked with people who grasp the new fundamentals: margin compression, exponential scale, and infinite possibilities brought by AI. Combining domain expertise with technical agility is more critical than ever, as the fusion of seasoned judgment and lightning-fast, innovative execution is where breakthroughs occur. On a personal level, Ray stresses that knowledge and execution are becoming commodities, rapidly automated by advances in AI. To stay relevant, individuals must become “macro analysts,” adept at synthesizing big ideas and patterns, deeply immersed in experimenting with new technologies and surrounded by others who are passionate about their own crafts. The traditional playbooks for career building, education, and even family strategies are being rewritten in real-time. The U.S. faces global competition for talent and innovation, and entrepreneurial energy is no longer confined to Silicon Valley or New York. The nature of immigration, investment and even educational choices must be reconsidered for new generations. In a world where the location and structure of opportunity are shifting, only those who embrace change, foster diverse collaborations and pursue purpose will continue to define the next era of legendary achievement. Robbie Bach is a bestselling author and former tech executive who helped lead Microsoft through some of its most dynamic years. As the Chief Xbox Officer, he spearheaded the creation of the iconic Xbox and Xbox 360. After retiring from Microsoft, he shifted his focus to philanthropy, civic advocacy and storytelling. Robbie Bach joined Microsoft in 1988. Over the next 22 years, he worked in various marketing, general management and business leadership roles, including supporting the successful launch and expansion of Microsoft Office. As Chief Xbox Officer, he led the creation and development of the Xbox business, including the launch of the Xbox and its highly popular successor, the Xbox 360. He retired from Microsoft as the president of the Entertainment and Devices Division in 2010. In his new role as a civic engineer, Robbie works with corporate, philanthropic and civic organizations that are driving positive change in our communities. He guest lectures extensively at various colleges and universities and speaks to corporate, civic and trade association audiences across the country. In 2015, he published his first book, “Xbox Revisited: A Game Plan for Corporate and Civic Renewal.” His debut novel featuring Tamika Smith, “The Wilkes Insurrection,” was published in 2021. He is the former chairman and current board member at the Bipartisan Policy Center. He serves on the national board of governors for Boys and Girls Clubs of America and was the chairman of that board from 2009 to 2011. He is also a board member for Habitat for Humanity International and Genius Sports. He previously served as a board member of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Sonos, Brooks Running Company, the Space Needle, Magic Leap and Year Up Puget Sound. He is the co-owner of Manini's, a company specializing in gluten-free foods. He was an Arjay Miller Scholar at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he earned his MBA, and a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina, where he earned his degree in economics. He and his wife, Pauline, reside in Washington state, with their yellow lab, Roscoe. They have three grown children and two grandchildren. His first novel, “The Wilkes Insurrection,” introduced readers to Senator Tamika Smith in a high-stakes battle against a domestic terror conspiracy. In his latest novel, “The Blockchain Syndicate,” Bach continues the gripping saga as Tamika faces a cryptic criminal syndicate threatening America's financial and political foundations. Here's what I wrote Oct. 26, 1993: “Our Centary [Cemetary] Field Trip “We left at 9:24 [a.m.] to private little spot with 3 gravesites. To get here go down Highway 60 to the third road on the left. Go down till you see an open field on the left is a hill climb up it until you have almost reaches the top. Go into the woods and when you see 3 stones. Mr. Watterson told us about the importantce [importance] of written history. “Then we put holes in the ground. Then we posts in the ground. Then Mr. Watterson talked about folklore. Then we put some hooks in the posts. After that we put a long, long chain that we put around the posts. Then we asked questions. We went back down the hill. Then we went back to the bus. We retraced our steps there. As we went home, Mr. Watterson told us about a guy who killed his wife and 2 brothers a hair pin. I did not believe it. We got back to school at 10:40 a.m. This field trip was very, very fun and interesting.” I asked Justin if he knew any more about that last bit. He said: “I should have known the story you were referring to. That grave is an Isom woman and I think she was related to the perpetrator in question. When Van Sanders used to tell those stories to Dad when he was alive (his family was an original plot owner there in that area so he knew the history) he always referred to the hill as "Ant'ony Hill." I found census records for I believe an Anthony Isom. The story was that his wife fell disabled (invalid) and he got tired of taking care of her so he took and axe and chopped her up. Finding records of that is pretty much impossible but that's what you're referring to I think. “There were a bunch of mixed-race folks who settled right there in that area and I always kind of guessed that it was because the old Indian boundary line was right there going through that area way back in the day. Isom was a very common name among them and they mostly came from Virginia where other such settlements existed. There were notable other settlements of free people of color around the state back in the 19th century. “It's an interesting wormhole to go down. What defined "black" on the census was kind of crazy. Alexander Morpheigh, whose real name is Alex Mazal, was born on April 29, 1972, and is a professional with a unique blend of expertise in science, engineering, business, and philosophy. Married with two children, Alexander's academic foundation began with extensive studies in physics and astronomy. While initially pursuing a career in astrophysics, he ultimately earned a Master's degree in Engineering and a degree in Business Development from the State Maritime University. In 2024, Alexander's passion for storytelling and philosophy culminated in the publication of “The Pythagorean”. This science fiction novel weaves together his research and insights, presenting a captivating narrative inspired by the teachings and legacy of Pythagoras in a modern context. Beyond his professional achievements, Alexander has cultivated a deep passion for ancient Greek culture. Since 2012, he has dedicated himself to the study of ancient Greek philosophy. This journey led him to contract a professional film crew in 2017 to create a documentary, investigating the legacy of Pythagoras and his modern followers. While the documentary remained unreleased, the project unearthed intriguing discoveries, including the existence of three secret Pythagorean orders comprised of contemporary scientists, such as mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers. With over three decades of experience in industrial automation engineering, Alexander has been at the forefront of innovation in this field. On this our 274th episode our guest is Stephen Fagin, Curator of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and author of “Assassination and Commemoration.” Since joining the Museum in 2000, he has appeared in numerous documentaries and television programs and given hundreds of media interviews, including appearances on the Today Show and Good Morning America. Fagin, who holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and the University of Oklahoma, also serves as Associate Editor of Legacies Dallas History Journal. In many ways, this episode has been 12 years in the making. In early 2013, when I was Night Editor of the Kokomo Tribune, a reader came into the office carrying a stack of yellowing editions of the paper. She said she had found them in her parents' attic and wanted to see if we wanted them before they headed to the trash heap. In the stack were three copies concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy: the Nov. 23, 24 and 27, 1963 editions of the paper. A few months later, in November 2013, I wrote a story about these historical newspapers and also a column about the assassination itself. After I left the Kokomo Tribune in 2017, I packed these newspapers up in a box and mostly didn't look at them for the next few years. Then, a few months ago, I found out I would have the opportunity to travel to Dallas for a work conference. I contacted the museum to see if they might be interested in receiving these newspapers as a donation. I also asked if someone there might be available to be a guest on this podcast. Megan Bryant, director of collections and intellectual property, kindly responded and said they would be glad to accept this donation. She also put me in touch with Stephen, who also kindly agreed to be interviewed while I was there. So, this past week, I carefully packed the newspapers in my bag and headed off to Dallas. After my conference finished, I headed over to the museum. I met Megan and handed over the newspapers, which are now housed under the prestigious title, “Rob Burgess collection.” Stephen and I then made our way to their studio on the first floor of the former Texas School Book Depository, which was a surreal experience to say the least. I then took the elevator to the sixth floor to check out the museum itself. During my visit, I also had the opportunity to hear Stephen deliver one of his weekly gallery talks, in which he featured Lee Harvey Oswald's 14-karat gold wedding band. Thank you to Megan, Stephen and the rest of the museum staff for such a wonderful experience.
