Jesse Rubenfeld and Tom Zehentner of FinOptimal are an example of a new crop of entrepreneurs trying to move the industry in the right direction. In this episode of the podcast Tom and Jesse discuss their passion for automation, their love hate relationship with Quickbooks and how to have a startup mindset in accounting. Yale Law School's Jed Rubenfeld isn't letting his suspension following a sexual harassment investigation slow down his quest for the spotlight. And while media outlets don't need to invite the scrutiny by inviting a suspended professor to talk about run-of-the-mill legal takes, the Wall Street Journal is ready to roll out the red carpet for anyone willing to provide spicy "vaccines are socialism" takes! Pairing with an award-winning virologist also at the nadir of his professional standing, Rubenfeld explains how omicron means vaccine mandates are unconstitutional... or something. We also talk about the wrong way to handle a holiday party -- don't slap guests! -- and how the Ghislaine Maxwell verdict may fall apart over jury selection. Can you utilize physical touch in therapy? How does physical touch help an anxious patient to remain in the present moment? What are the ethics behind using physical touch in session? MEET JOAN BROOKSAt the end of a day-long workshop with Ilana Rubenfeld in 1997, Joan knew that not only would this be the work she'd do for the rest of her life, she also knew in my bones that she would one day teach this work to others. As a lifeline learner, Joan has continued to hone and deepen her skills as both Synergist and teacher. I have devoted my life to helping others heal from the wounds and trauma of life. Today, in her private practice, Joan primarily helps women who have experienced sexual trauma heal so they can step into their full power and take their rightful place in the world. Activate Your Clients' Inner Healing Wisdom! https://yourbodyisyourbestfriend.com/ (Click here for your free gift.) IN THIS PODCAST:Can you introduce physical touch into counseling sessions? How to introduce physical touch Ethics of touch CAN YOU INTRODUCE PHYSICAL TOUCH INTO COUNSELING SESSIONS?The first thing to do is to educate your client about what touch is. You can do this via virtual therapy as well because you can describe and show your clients what it is that you want them to do. Educate them about what you mean by touch. I describe … in the guide the soft, full contact … it's very soft and I'm not applying any pressure, and help the client be able to listen to the body and to start with physical sensation. That's usually the easiest thing for people to be able to do when they first make contact with their body … to be aware of the physical sensations. (Joan Brooks) Help your clients be aware of their bodies. Ask them: Is there a message your heart wants to give you? Is there a message you want to give your heart? This opens a dialogue up to the client interacting with their body. They can then learn to see their body as an entity that can store emotion and experiences. It helps the client to practice empathy, awareness, and kindness towards their body instead of seeing it only as a mechanism for living. HOW TO INTRODUCE PHYSICAL TOUCHAsk your clients: Where they feel their anxiety or their emotion in their body, What physical sensations are they feeling? How is their emotion manifesting in their body? I would then ask my client if she would be willing to put her hand or hands there. I would already have talked to her about a full, soft contact, not pressure. We're not kneading it, it's not massage, we're not trying to fix it. What we're doing is listening. (Joan Brooks)Have your client visualize that they have their awareness, love, and attention in their hand, and they are then placing that hand softly on the spot on their body that is currently enduring the anxiety. You want your client to focus on the physical sensation because when they concentrate on the physical sensation, then they are in the present moment, in the here and now. ETHICS OF TOUCHWords can do damage and yet as therapists we're … taught to use words in a way that's not harmful, in a way that is helpful rather than harmful. So, the same is true of touch, and the benefits of touch are so tremendous. (Joan Brooks)Touch builds, enhances, and maintains the therapeutic alliance because it is a method of communicating the therapist's intention and presence through touch. It enhances the client outcomes. The client is a full participant in the session because touch calls on the body to be a part of the client's healing. The most effective way to contact innate healing is through touch, although touch needs to be done with training and consciousness. With proper training, touch can be a huge benefit for therapy, but it needs to be spoken about and taken seriously and openly. Connect With

The Propelled Heart: Moving from Injury to Insight with Dr. Toni Luisa RiveraAired Sunday, 17 April 2016, 10:00 PM ETDr. Toni Luisa Rivera Clues You In on What Your Body is Trying to Tell You. She was a whirlwind of a doctor. The only chiropractor on a remote part of Puerto Rico, she was inundated with patients, many of whom were out of pain for the first time in years. Wanting to heal EVERYONE, she drove herself to extremes. But what really drove Dr. Toni Luisa Rivera was buried so deep that only in her 30s were the memories really starting to offer clarity—repeated sexual assaults before the age of four, a heart crushed by a mother so overwhelmed with the truth that she couldn’t find it in herself to comfort her daughter and a burning desire to be of value, to prove her worthiness. It was a recipe for disaster and it was only through listening deeply to her own body that Rivera found her way to physical, mental and emotional health. And it is this deep listening and intuitive technique that Dr. Toni offers her readers in her new book The Propelled Heart: Moving from Injury to Insight.Part memoir, part healing guidebook, Rivera tells of her passage to insight, allowing injury to transform into the gifts she brings to the world. Rivera recounts how she listened to her body’s physical pain to help unlock those wounds of forgotten childhood sexual abuse, freeing her to follow an inner-driven, more deliberate, more intentional and joyful way of life, while still serving those who needed help.Always an adventurer, she soaked up knowledge and experience to enhance her skills, but it was in taking a workshop by the renowned Ilana Rubenfeld, founder of the Rubenfeld Synergy Method (RSM), that Rivera found her first real key. Rubenfeld taught her how to feel the pain completely and interpret the wisdom and guidance in that pain. She discovered how to get life-changing answers.Rivera explains how her growing knowledge, and willingness to listen to her intuition, laid the groundwork for her unique healing practice in New Mexico today, that guides and counsels people individually on critical methods to listen to their bodies as a means to achieve total wellness and a fulfilled life. She also trains other practitioners in her technique. In the second part of The Propelled Heart, Dr. Toni offers insight on body wisdom, complete with exercises that the reader can conduct to deepen one’s ability to hear the messages and tune in to intuition. Rivera also brings to light critical issues that are often at the heart of someone’s physical, emotional and spiritual pain…and how someone can begin overcoming blockages in those areas.Says Rivera: “Donald Epstein, D.C, founder of Network Spinal Analysis said, ‘We must learn to listen to the body’s whispers so we don’t have to endure its screams.’ How true! How many times have people come to my office complaining of some physical sensation, and when asked how long the symptom had been present, they reply: ‘Oh, it only hurt a little bit at first, thirty years ago. Now it is unbearable!’”Rivera wants to awaken people to the art of listening to the messages of pain now as the route to a healthy and unlimited life in the future.
