Vote Maximizer - Where the most voters have the most influence A Family Life Newsmaker Interview - 10/30/2024 The developer of a web-based tool to evaluate action plans based on political polls and populations says control of Congress runs through Pennsylvania and New York again this year: Dr. Sam Wang and his team created the "Vote Maximizer" website which shows statewide and national trends to measure how and where individuals and groups have the largest influence on government through their votes and other political activities. VoteMaximizer.org shows several Pennsylvania counties where an individual voter has the most influence on their state government: Centre, Erie, Mercer, Luzerne, Lackawanna and Allegheny. The biggest influence this year for New York voters is on some Congressional seats from Syracuse and Utica toward New York City, including Districts 19 and 22.     Sam Wang is an Ivy League professor, as well as the founding director of the Electoral Innovation Lab. Princeton University's Neuroscience Lab is named after him. Their website is VoteMaximizer.org.  An introductory video is here. He has an interest in improving the government through the ways voting districts are mapped. He gave a TED Talk this fall on "Using Math to Repair Democracy".   www.familylife.org/newspodcasts

“The Presidential race might get thrown into the House of Representatives,” says Dr. Sam Wang of the Princeton Gerrymandering Initiative in this episode. “And in the House of Representatives, every state gets one vote.”  Both a neuroscientist and recognized authority on gerrymandering, Wang is highlighting the connection between partisan gerrymanders in states throughout the country and following on effects at the national level in the US House but potentially also the White House.  “And certainly when I've done cases involving congressional delegations, a piece of it is the one Sam mentioned,” echoes Paul Smith, Senior Vice President at Campaign Legal Center. “Who's going to control the delegation for this particularly unusual house resolution of presidential elections?” In this two-guest episode, we'll discuss the strategies behind partisan gerrymanders and the leading defenses against them. These include lawsuits argued by Paul Smith and other litigators and the establishment of independent redistricting commissions at the state level. “A well-crafted citizens commission that's non-partisan is always going to do a more fair and balanced job than a partisan legislature,” says Smith, citing the cases of California and Michigan.  “Right now, we're stuck playing small ball, getting small things locally like, say, rank choice voting or redistricting reform,” explains Sam Wang, whose gerrymandering report cards are often cited in legal cases. “The long game is to start implementing some of the bigger reforms and repairs.” Tune in for two informed views on how the tide is turning against partisan gerrymandering in critical states like Wisconsin and how plugging the gerrymander leak in one state prevents even more significant problems at the national level.  The Purple Principle is a Fluent Knowledge production; original music by Ryan Adair Rooney.  SHOW NOTES Our Guests: Sam Wang, Founder & Director, Princeton Gerrymandering Project.   As doctors, curiosity can be the driving factor to a long, successful, and fulfilling career. It can be the difference between daily repetition and years of practicing evolved education. For Barton Schmitt, MD, curiosity has been a transformative force for over 50 years, influencing his approach to teaching residents, patient encounters and career development. Otherwise known as a true icon of pediatrics, Dr. Schmitt's humble, down-to-earth nature helped create one of the most prestigious pediatric guidelines in our industry. “Feedback from a variety of sources is really the life blood of all of this. At least 100 to 150 of the protocols are updated every year,” Dr. Schmitt says.   For more than five decades, Dr. Schmitt has elevated the Children's Hospital Colorado name while creating an honorable legacy of his own. Many of you know him as the author of the ‘Pediatric Telephone Triage Guidelines' used in our Pediatric Call Center. Those decision-support tools are now used worldwide and have been translated into multiple languages. Throughout his career he's had numerous other titles such as the Faculty Attending for the Child Health Clinic and the medical director of the Child Protection Team. Now on the brink of his next chapter, we reflect on his incredible legacy and find out what's next.  “I'm hoping to retire when I'm 90. Sam Wang is the Director of the Electoral Innovation Lab and a professor of neuroscience at Princeton University. We discuss how we can better understand the current state of district maps across the US, and how they can be made more fair and representative of their constituents.   Gerrymandering is not only unfair but also anti-democratic. It favors one party over another, effectively shutting out the possibility of accurate representation in a legislative body. The current electoral system forces voters into opposite camps and then rewards them for doing so. For example, primary elections reward a partisan loyalist who is unlikely to represent the views of the majority of voters. But, local and state elections are a hope for the future because voters are less polarized. They also discuss how best to think about the behavior of low information voters, why the far right doesn't win French presidential elections despite strong anti-immigration sentiment among the public, and how people who criticize the Islamic veil are actually being PC. And how will President Biden and his team tackle some of the country's biggest challenges from responding to the war in Ukraine to getting a handle on inflation? Former Congressman Will Hurd — and self-described “idealist” — proposes a blueprint for getting things done in Washington, all of which is explained in his new book, “American Reboot: An idealist Guide to Getting Things Done,” published this week by Simon & Schuster. He discusses this and more in a lively conversation with Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang in this week's episode. Hurd represented Texas's 23rd Congressional District from 2015 to 2021. Following Russia's invasion into Ukraine, the world finds itself again in a moment of war. As gunfire and bombings continue, it's unclear whether Putin will give up this fight, leading to questions about how to achieve an end to the conflict. Moving into a successful post-war peace will require thoughtful and deliberate leadership — characteristics that President Abraham Lincoln displayed during and after the Civil War.   A new book by author John Avlon provides a groundbreaking, revelatory account of Lincoln's approach to peace — one that's inspired many famous leaders including Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avlon joins Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang in this week's show to talk about the book, “Abraham Lincoln: Fight for Peace,” published by Simon & Schuster in February 2022.   Avlon is a senior political analyst and anchor at CNN. Partisan gerrymandering— where one party gains an unfair advantage by redrawing political maps to favor its candidates— is unpopular with voters, but widespread in many states. We examine why this process devalues democracy, and how data science is being used across the country to expose many of the most egregious examples, and help voters advocate for fair and transparent redistricting. Every decade, legislators across the country come up with maps for state and congressional districts. The latest round of changes, due to be finished well before primaries are held before the 2022 midterm elections in November, is facing widespread criticism. Redistricting reformers also see strong ties between partisan and racial bias. Our guest in this episode shows citizens how they can fight back against local examples of gerrymandering by both Democrats and Republicans. Professor Sam Wang oversees the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, which runs an informative website that helps voters in every state decide if they live in an unfairly drawn legislative or Congressional District."A sense of fairness is a fundamental principle of our democracy," Professor Wang tells us. Nick Jikomes talks to Sam Wang, PhD professor of neuroscience at Princeton University. Dr. Wong's lab investigates how brains learn from sensory experience, in adulthood and development, with relevance for autism. A lot of their work focuses on a part of the brain called the cerebellum. They talk about the cerebellum and what we're learning about its functions, as well as how it's tied to autism, and what the causes and nature of autism actually are. This included both the genetic and environmental risk factors for autism, and how to think about treatment. Lastly, they talk about another side of his work, which is related to using data and science to help repair our democracy by combatting things like congressional gerrymandering.USEFUL LINKSSign up for the weekly Mind & Matter newsletter[https://mindandmatter.substack.com/]Download the podcast & follow Nick at his website[https://www.nickjikomes.com]Buy books by M&M guests[https://linktr.ee/mindandmatter_books]Athletic Greens, comprehensive daily nutrition (Free 1-year supply Vitamin D w/ purchase)[https://athleticgreens.com/partner/d3...]Organize your digital highlights & notes w/ Readwise (2 months free w/ sub)[https://readwise.io/nickjikomes/]Follow & Support Nick's work[https://linktr.ee/trikomes]Learn more about our podcast sponsor, Dosist[https://dosist.com/]Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/nickjikomes)

Lori Mihalich-Levin and Jason Levin are back after taking a break to take an 8,153-mile car trip across the country! In this episode of Parents at Work, Lori and Jason interview Christian Nunes and Radhika Patil, two inspiring CEO moms.   Christian Nunes, MBA, MS, LCSW, is the National President of the National Organization for Women (NOW). She has been the National President since August 2020. Before that, she was appointed Vice President by the board in May 2019. Christian is the second African American president in the organization's history, the youngest person of color, and the youngest president of the organization in more than 40 years. Christian leads the organization through an intersectional lens and brings together a diverse affiliation of grassroots activists to work against structural sexism and racism. In addition, Christian is the founder of a behavioral health and consulting practice. Her mental health expertise assists her in understanding the constituents' experience. It also helps her understand where policy and legislation are disconnected from the real experience of the people. Christian lives with her 2-year-old son, CJ, near Washington, D.C. Christian and CJ love taking short day trips to parks, outdoor festivals, zoos, and farms in the DMV area in their spare time. Radhika Patil is the co-founder and CEO of Cradlewise and mom to a 7-year old and a 4-year-old. Cradlewise is a baby tech company based in Silicon Valley. Their first product is a smart crib for babies with an integrated contactless baby monitor that automatically starts rocking along with music to soothe the baby back to sleep, just like a parent, at the first signs of wakeup. Since building the crib for her babies, Radhika has been on a sleep fitness mission to help other parents. Radhika's husband is the other co-founder of Cradlewise. In her spare time, Radhika loves to hike, garden, and read books with her kids.  In today's conversation, Christian and Radhika give open and candid accounts of their experiences as working parents who also happen to be CEOs of organizations. They talk about the workplace supports they enjoyed after becoming parents and those they would like to have had. They also discuss the career-related skills their parenthood experience helped them develop, recount parenthood-related micro-aggressions they have experienced, share their best advice for navigating life as a working parent, and much, much more! Stay tuned to hear the motivating and encouraging conversation with these two amazing working moms! Show highlights: Having her child later in life has made Christian's journey interesting, fun, and challenging. (4:33) There is more acceptance now than ever before for taking time off for kids. (7:10) It is sometimes hard for Radhika to separate her work from her personal life. (10:05) It can be challenging to find a healthy work-life balance while taking ownership of your life in the process. (14:02) Sometimes, you need to take some time to do things for yourself. (14:55) Christian's infant son went with her when she had to travel for work. (16:24) Since becoming the president of her organization, Christian has added extra support for working parents. (17:19) Having daycare on site where she worked would have been a game-changer for Radhika after her baby was born. (23:31) Having a toddler has helped Christian understand people's mood changes a lot better. (28:15) Coping with micro-aggressions and shaping the conversation around working parents. Pro-Trump extremists seem to have a tight grip on the Republican Party at both state and national levels. Some are even wondering whether a new center-right party may be needed — as a last resort.   These concerns were expressed by Gov.
