Seabin burst on to the scene back in 2016 with a innovative bin designed to clean up oceans and waterways, installed in marinas with a video that went globally viral. 5 years on and whilst they have sold bins in over 50 countries globally and cleaned up hundreds of tons of plastics from billions of litres of filtered water the business wasn't itself sustainable, in fact it was in trouble. In this interview with founder & CEO Pete Ceglinski we talk in detail about the huge pivot they have undertaken from selling Seabins to selling the data they generate. Just a year into this new model and they have a sustainable economic model and are poised to take this model into the mainstream with a plan to launch in a 100 locations in the next 2 decades.A critical interview for any impact led founder who may need to rethink THEIR whole strategy or business model and a fascinating and important listen for anyone considering taking part in the Seabin crowdfunding. https://seabin.io/https://tnfd.global/ - Tasksforce for Nature Related Disclosures  Shape the System is  an independent podcast with support from KPMG High Growth VenturesMore about KPMG High Growth VenturesScale up for success. Pete Ceglinski is a surfer, industrial designer and ‘eco-preneur' whose game-changing invention, the Seabin has captured millions of kilos of waste from our oceans. It's a simple idea - a bin for the sea - yet its footprint is indelible. Since launching the business with a crowdfunding campaign, Pete and his team have taken Seabin global, saving 1000s of sea creatures from being trapped in plastic waste. But the Seabin isn't just a floating garbage collector, thanks to smart technology, Pete and co. can now track microplastics and their impact on the ocean. Thanks to Pete and the Seabin Project, our seas and futures look brighter every day!

We balanced the conversation by having some deep chats and talking about poo and pants. You can look forward to a philosophical conversation about the meaning of punk, the importance of not following society's stereotypes, and the impending plane crash of balancing four bands. This episode's guest is Pete Ceglinski. Pete is the Co-Founder and CEO of Seabin Project, the incredible invention that has not only removed over 1million kg's of marine litter from our waterways, but also runs educational courses in schools and businesses about preventing pollution in the first place. But the true power of Seabin Project is not just what they do, but they way they engage people and build community. Through fundraisers, online content, educational events, and more, Pete and his team have truly built a movement. The power of this was obvious earlier in 2020 when Seabin Project ran a successful crowdfunding campaign raising over $1.8million from over 1600 investors. Pete graciously invited me to Seabin's head office in Mullumbimby where we talked about not just what he does, but the way he sees the world. His unassuming and grounded nature makes me think about how many other great ideas people have dreamt up before but have never seen the light of day, simply because we haven't taken that first step. Key point... don't overthink things! Pete's a legend and you'll quickly hear why in this episode. Thank you so much to everyone's feedback from the launch with the first few episodes. The Seabin Project started when two mates asked the question, “if we can have rubbish bins on land then why not have them in the ocean?” Over the last four years, Pete and his team have set about to create the revolutionary Seabins which are now floating in over 50 countries around the world. The bins which act as a skimmer box for our oceans collect over 3.5tonnes of plastic and marine debris each day.

High-performance sailboat builder turned trash can maker. Peter Ceglinski, the co-founder of the Seabin Project, created the only floating rubbish bin made to remove marine debris, pollutants, plastic, and anything else that doesn’t belong floating in our oceans.  Deciding he needed a career change, Pete one day decided to jump into the deep end and create a company dedicated to cleaning our ocean, one Seabin at a time. To date, the Seabin Project has collected almost 1,000,000 kgs of debris around the world and is only getting started!  It was a real pleasure talking with Peter and learning how his relatively new company is changing the way we clean our ocean. A bold initiative to fight plastic pollution in the oceans The Seabin Project was born in 2015 when two Australians and avid water lovers - Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski - teamed up to solve a simple question: if there were rubbish bins on land, why not in the water? The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that can collect plastic bottles, paper, oil, fuel, and detergent floating in the ocean. In 2017, Wärtsilä partnered with the dynamic duo and the Seabin Project as the first big technology company. In this motivational podcast, Atte Palomäki, EVP for Communications, Branding & Marketing at Wärtsilä interviews Pete Ceglinski, CEO & Co-Founder of the Seabin Project. Pete shares about the journey of the Seabin and the challenges this agile start-up endured to get to where they are today. The key ingredients for success? Staying positive and having confidence in what you do. The Seabin Project is currently raising capital by allowing people to join the movement and buy shares in the company. To date, the business has raised over $1.3 million from 1,204 small investors. Listen to this podcast to find out more.

The inspiration for his invention came from the thought: If we have trash cans on land, why not put them in water The device works but skimming plastic pollution and marine liter in the water from the surface, pulling it into the bin.

The problem of plastic pollution in the oceans is impossible to avoid. You see it wherever you go, all over the world and, other than organising beach cleans and gathering it by hand, it’s a problem to which there is not yet a workable solution. But that’s about to change. The Seabin is an ingeniously simple device, which floats just below the surface of the water, in marinas and bays, and sucks in floating garbage. It can even collect diesel spills. Mike McDowall paid a visit to Seabin headquarters to find out how it works and to ask how soon we might see the Seabin in action around the world. There are two projects out there that the mainstream media is riding the wave right now and it's claiming that their projects are going to save us form our own wasteful ways. One of the projects is called the Ocean Clean Up Project started by Boyan Slant, a 19-year old boy who says he can clean up the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre in less than 10 years. The other project is called the Seabin and it could help clean up small areas along the shore; however, the media is saying that it could clean up the Ocean (according to the headline anyway). There has been some criticism from Scientists (as we scientists do) of the Ocean Clean Up Project, where they point out flaws in the design and environmental and legal consequences of the structure.  The Seabin looks like it can clean up small areas such as marinas or coasts, but there would have to be many Seabins purchased to do a mare clean up of the coast along any shoreline.  In this episode, I chat about the problem of plastic pollution; I describe the two projects; and, I mention some poplar ways you can save the environment for itself.  Speak Up For Blue TV: http://bit.ly/sufbtele Support the Podcast:http://www.speakupforblue.com/patreon Shop for the Ocean:http://www.speakupforblue.com/shop 10 Ocean Tips to Conserve the Ocean:http://www.speakupforblue.com/wordpress/sufb_optinpdf Show Notes:http://www.speakupforblue.com/session148
