Hello Rank Squad! The (first) Transfer Window has officially closed, but there's been plenty of activity on the managerial merry-go-round across Europe, with new faces taking over at new places - to the delight of some and the chagrin of others. On today's episode we're looking at a number of new bosses and analysing how we think they fit their new home. We start with the most recent appointment - Brentford's Thomas Frank is all set to take over at Tottenham Hotspur, who moved on from Ange Postecoglou at the end of last week, and try to build on that Europa League trophy that Ange won in what turned out to be his final game. We discuss the differing approaches and how this might all work out; before moving on to talk about Xabi Alonso's new era at Real Madrid, after he left Bayer Leverkusen to replace Carlo Ancelotti; and his replacement at Leverkusen - former Manchester United and Ajax gaffer Erik ten Hag. Then in Part Three, we get stuck into the Calcio Chaos - Christian Chivu replacing Simone Inzaghi at Inter; Max Allegri returning to AC Milan to take over from the sacked Sergio Conçeição; Gian Piero Gasperini leaving Atalanta to take over from Claudio Ranieri at Roma, with the Tinkerman turning down the Azzurri to stay upstairs in the Eternal City; and former Gasperini disciple Ivan Juric replacing the old chessmaster at Atalanta. There's some chat too about the Club World Cup and some of the transfers yet to happen this summer at the start of the show, and don't forget to take a look at our Patreon, where there's loads more transfer podcasts and newsletters happening over the course of this summer. It's Ranks! Kelly Cates is joined by The i Paper's chief football writer Daniel Storey, Sports economist Victor A. Matheson & football finance expert Kieran Maguire, as they delve into the rising number of American owners across British football. It's 20 years since the Glazer family's highly-controversial and highly-leveraged takeover of Manchester United. Throughout those two decades, the Glazers have been the prime target of fan protests with “Glazers out” still ringing around Old Trafford. So over the course of this episode you'll hear why US investors are obsessed with British football, and how real are the concerns that US owners could collude to “Americanise” the traditions of English football from the removal of promotion and relegation to moving matches overseas and relocating clubs to other cities.
Host Ricky Sacks is joined by regular guests of Last Word On Spurs in this team special, as the panel reflect on Tottenham sacking head coach Ange Postecoglou despite winning the Europa League to end the club's 17-year trophy drought. Postecoglou's dismissal - described as a "unanimous decision" by the Spurs board - comes 16 days after he guided Spurs to a 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United to claim their first European trophy in 41 years. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank is the leading contender to become the next Tottenham boss, Spurs are expected to seek an appointment quickly after sacking Ange Postecoglou on Friday evening. Frank is the front-runner to succeed the Australian, but negotiations are yet to take place with Brentford over the Dane, who has a release clause in his contract. His return prompts discussion about Geraint Thomas's potential management role upon retirement, first reported by Escape Collective in March. The exact nature of Thomas's role is ill-defined, with speculation ranging from something like head sports director or director of racing, or perhaps stepping into a role providing human connection and emotional intelligence for the riders, given that he doesn't seem to relish internal politics. The Criterium du Dauphine is upon us, set to be a mano a mano a mano battle featuring Vingegaard, Pogacar, and Evenepoel in the same stage race for the first time this year. Manchester United have made a swift start to their summer transfer business with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Brazilian looks set to improve Ruben Amorim's side immediately, but it's clear the Red Devils need more if they're to get back towards the top of the Premier League. Brentford's Brian Mbeumo is another name linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but does the French winger fit Amorim's system? Across Manchester, City are also planning to raid Wolves for one of their stars as Rayan Ait-Nouri continues to be heavily linked with the club in a big money move. AC Milan midfielder Tijani Reijnders is also closing in on a move as Pep Guardiola looks to revamp his squad after a poor season. Hello Rank Squad! The footballing summer is officially here, with the Champions League Final crowning what has been a pretty unbelievable season in Europe all round. We start today's episode with the final word on that final, where Luis Enrique's brilliant PSG absolutely dismantled Inter in one of the all-time great showpiece performances. Then, it's onto the talk of the summer - transfer season; and whilst there will be plenty of this covered here on Ranks all summer long, we wanted to take a look at some of the deals already done or nearly done, that we have reservations about for one reason or another. Some are personal, some are club-related, and some are just a question of fit; but whilst there could and should be levels of excitement, it's important to try and be realistic as well. We discuss the details of moves for Rayan Cherki, Jobe Bellingham, Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha; and also touch on Bruno Fernandes' decision to stay at Manchester United. We finish off with a discussion of some of the deals we think are absolutely guaranteed to be a success, as well as some early thoughts on the links between Arsenal and Benjamin Sesko. It's Ranks! They debate the broader implications of these moves on squad dynamics, formation strategies, and financial flexibility. Additionally, the roles of current stars like Bruno and Amad are scrutinised. Everton are braced for another summer of interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. The centre-back remains on the radar of several Premier League clubs. The Blues rebuffed two bids for the 22-year-old from Manchester United last summer. Neither offer, with the second for a package worth around £50m, came close to meeting the club's valuation of a player who had enjoyed a stunning breakthrough year. Branthwaite is under contract at Everton until the end of June 2027, having signed a new deal following his emergence into the first team in the opening months of the 2023/24 campaign. Everton, who signed him from Carlisle United in 2020, are in a strong position to rebuff speculative interest as a result. Looking deeper into the squad, a number of Everton players with uncertain futures remain out the club, but for how long? Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane will see their contracts run out at the end of June while Nathan Patterson has struggled to impress upon his return from injury. A forward remains a priority for the blues having been rebuffed by Liam Delap, who chose Chelsea. Where does that leave Beto who has turned his Everton career around with a bag full of goals in the second half of the season?
