We are diving into the topic of karma and politics with my guest, Dr. Robert Svoboda. You've heard him on the podcast numerous times, as we have covered many fascinating topics with him in the past, taking advantage of learning from his wisdom and expertise. We are taking a big-picture view of this political moment in time, along with the karma of being involved in a political system and the dilemma of why or why not to vote. You'll hear our personal thoughts on current political threads as if you're a fly on the wall in our conversation. This episode is an overview of how to stay sane in a time when Rahu is on the scene, and we'll explain what that means. The biggest takeaway from this conversation is that we are in a time of unpredictability and ungrounding energy, and our responsibility is to navigate this season with grace, skill, and overriding respect as helpful spiritual practitioners. Jennifer Cantor is a proud graduate of the University of North Georgia, where she received a degree in English with a concentration in Writing and Publication. She went on from college to become an English teacher at Rivers Academy (formerly known as Chalk to Champions) in the Fall of 2008. Jennifer quickly became immersed in the school and explored any opportunity that became available. Within her first two years at Rivers, she gained the role of Teacher Liaison and Admissions Coordinator. Jennifer completed her master's degree in Educational Administration from National University in March of 2014. She became the Principal of Rivers Academy in the Fall of 2014. For the next four years Jennifer strived to create a school where students and staff feel valued and accepted. Rivers Academy has become leaders in their industry by providing students a high-quality college preparatory curriculum in just three school days. At the age of 34, Jennifer became a co-owner in June of 2018 with her business partner, Debbie Beasley. During their first year of ownership, Rivers Academy joined the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA), where they have gone on to win three state championships in Golf and Swimming over the past three years. The school expanded by opening a new middle school building and adding eight new teachers at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. We currently have 240 students in 5th-12th grade and 32 staff members. Jennifer has received the Greater North Fulton Chamber's Women Influencing Business Rising Star Award in 2020. There's nothing wrong with full time public or full time private, but one size doesn't fit all. We all remember the teachers who shook it up in the classroom. I know as I release this podcast, a lot of men are going to look at the title and immediately write it off. “A real man,” after all, “doesn’t care how he looks.” While it’s a phrase I hear quite often, it just isn’t true. Washington, Alexander the Great, Theodore Roosevelt and, more recently, Jordan Peterson (to name a few) are all men who knew the usefulness of their appearance. That, to me, is the power of being conscious of your style – not to peacock, but to perform. And, today, I’m joined by my friend and a man extremely qualified to talk about how to level up your style. His name is Aaron Marino of Alpha M and today, we talk about the functionality of style, how what you wear communicates to people who you are, how dressing well helps instill a sense of respect in yourself, and how improved style improves your life. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Being well-groomed A competitive world You’re personal brand Opportunity for improvement Taking the next step Dressing with purpose Identifying body type Stretching your budget Ask for assistance Assessing yourself Stay simple and classic Looking too young Decision fatigue Finding congruency Your best foot forward AARON MARINO My guest today is a longtime friend and supporter of Order of Man, Aaron Marino. I met Aaron years ago when I attended his men’s conference, StyleCon (which later became Menfluential) and have been able to get to know him, his background as a gym owner and, later, someone who would go on to help millions of men level up their style, appearance, and confidence. He’s got over 6,000,000 YouTube Subscribers and owns multiple businesses but it’s been a long road to get to this point. And, today we talk about that journey and why he knows style is a powerful tool in every man’s toolbelt. 30 DAYS TO BATTLE READY Gents, we now have nearly 10,000 men who have gone through the new (and free) Battle Ready program. I am literally getting dozens or more emails a day from those of you are going through the process or have completed and I’m stoked to know that it is making a difference in your life. Too many men have no idea what the hell they should be doing with their lives and how to ensure they’re on the right track. And, while this course, won’t do the work for you or guarantee your results, it will point you in the right direction and give you a track to run on regardless of what your goals are. After writing both books I thought how in the world are there so many books out there as it's so hard to do! However, this is an amazing time to conquer those book writing goals and this podcast is going to answer those questions on what it's like to not only write a book but edit, publish and market it. Please welcome the author of over ten books and a new one coming out this month, Jennifer Moorman! Show Highlights: Being an author is also a small business. What are some things Jennifer learned as a small business owner? How do the ideas for books come to Jennifer? What marketing tactics have worked the best for her books? What are the pros and cons of self-publishing? Politics is just something we don’t talk a whole lot about in the Order of Man movement. I think it’s clear why. Masculinity isn’t reserved for one side of the political aisle but I do believe there are some underlying principles of masculinity (and the betterment of society) that tend to be politicized. And, so, I’ve rejected the notion of talking about politics or being even remotely political but it’s clear to me that these are conversations that need to be had. And, I can think of no better person to talk with us about it today than Sean Parnell, an Army Ranger veteran, New York Times Bestselling Author, and candidate for Congress. Today we talk about servant leadership, the American Dream, trust, power grabs, and men in politics. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Being a warrior Learning lessons Servant leadership Finding the right answer Dirty politics Raising campaign money Voting in leaders When tribalism wins Cultural shifts Political systems Defending freedom Coming home from war Economic fallout Common sense thinking Personal responsibility Showing gratitude Delivering justice SEAN PARNELL My guest today is Sean Parnell. He served as an Army Ranger with the 10th Mountain Division. His platoon, nicknamed “Outlaw Platoon” killed over 350 enemy fighters in some of the biggest firefights in the Afghan war. Upon returning to the states and after serious injuries (including neurological injuries), Sean was medically discharged from the military. He went on to write his New York Times Bestselling book, Outlaw Platoon, and is now a regular contributor on Fox as well as appearances on CNN, MSNBC, and many others. He is also the co-founder of the American Warrior Initiative and has since thrown his hat in the ring of politics and is running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District. Sara and Misasha bring you the second part of their Criminal Justice series and another big issue affecting the 2020 Presidential election. This episode focuses on the juvenile. Pause for a moment and think about someone you know that’s a juvenile. Maybe you think of your kid, or maybe you think of yourself at 13. What were you like? Did you ever make any poor choices? Listen in for a shocking history lesson and find out how old laws are impacting our children in the court system even today. Show Highlights: Being 13 is a difficult age. You often think you know everything, how to do everything, hormones are raging, you encounter peer pressure. What you don’t understand when you’re 13 is the consequences of your actions. There’s a reason why car rental companies do not rent to those under the age of 25. Your brain does not fully develop until you’re 25. Misasha reads from an article regarding Jim Crow era laws resulting in a high rate of black kids being charged as adults in the State of Mississippi and shares her worst fears. She shares a story of a young teenager named Isaiah and his experience in the adult court system. In the last 25 years, nearly 5,000 Mississippi children have been charged as adults. Three out of every four are black. “Convict leasing”, where the State loaned out its prison population to work on plantations and build railroads, became popular after slavery but was outlawed at the end of the Civil War. In the late 1880’s state laws made no distinction between punishing children and punishing adults. By 1880, children and adolescents made up about one quarter of the prison population. As a result of national pressure, the State of Mississippi ended convict leasing in 1890, but it gave way to the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary, better known as Parchman Farm. Even the youngest inmates at Parchman picked cotton and cultivated other cash crops for the state’s profits while incurring lashings from “Black Annie”, the name given to a thick leather strap. By the time the state got around to making separate jails for kids in 1916, the Governor was a well-known klansman by the name of Theodore Bilbo. Bilbo created so-called “training schools,” where the state could jail kids charged with breaking the law, homeless kids, abandoned kids, and even kids the courts thought might one day be criminals. More than two decades later, the 1940 Legislature created a separate court system for kids and at the same time permitted children as young as 14 to face criminal charges in adult court. Lawmakers wanted to take it even further. In 1942, the all-white body wrote a bill to permit children of any age to face criminal charges in adult court. But then-Governor Paul Johnson, Sr., vetoed this bill, arguing that the law was redundant. He already had approved $60,000 – nearly $1 million by today’s standards – to fund a “negro reformatory at Oakley State Farm.” This basically meant that there was no need to criminally prosecute younger kids when the state had a new plan in place to send black kids to Oakley. Laws passed in 1946 permitted kids as young as 13 to face criminal prosecution as adults. Their legacy remains seven decades later in the form of “original jurisdiction” laws. They are not unique to Mississippi: Twenty-six states automatically put children into the adult system at the moment of arrest for certain charges. Sara shares the impact on your brain of time spent in isolation, and the states that still allow solitary confinement as a disciplinary measure for juveniles: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Texas, and Wyoming. Solitary confinement of juveniles is prohibited under the Federal Bureau of Prisons. There is no evidence that solitary confinement improves behavior. There is, however, a lot of evidence that shows that it is harmful to children. There are approximately 67,000 prisoners placed in these conditions in the United States and Canada at any given time. Of the kids charged as adults who have gone before a Mississippi judge in the last quarter-century, nearly 75% are black. While boys make up most of the system, the racial disparity among Mississippi girls in the system also is stunning: 60% are black. White kids are over twice as likely to get a plea bargain that’s known as a “non-adjudication of guilt.” The laws need to change, and we should reflect on what the President can do, what Congress needs to do, and how the court systems can address these issues. NEXT WEEK: Sara and Misasha share their thoughts on key issues relating to the criminal justice system surrounding the 2020 election. Resources / Links: PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW US! It’s called Hanhart Syndrom and it kept him from developing his legs and one of his arms. But none of that has stopped him. In fact, if anything, it’s propelled him forward as he’s taken what would both literally and figuratively cripple most and turned it into something extremely empowering for him and the millions he inspires. He’s tried it all from bowling to wrestling to bodybuilding and now, he’s speaking up as one of the most sought-after public speakers in the world. All of us wrestle with the concept of being powerful. What does it mean for us to be powerful, or powerless, as an individual? Blair and Justin discuss when we are giving away our power, when we are owning our power, and how we can step into being a powerful person! Show Highlights: Being a powerful person includes the capacity to be intimate and powerful. Being powerful is a journey. It's never complete, and it should continue to grow as you mature. A powerful person has self-value. Their value is not sourced in their circumstances, but their person. Someone who doesn't have self-value can be influential, but not powerful. Power is an internal disposition. Powerful people have clear boundaries. A powerful person is a clear communicator. A powerful person isn't selfish. They are empathetic, sympathetic, and compassionate for others. A powerful person gives other people the benefit of the doubt. A powerful person takes responsibility over their lives. A powerless person blames everyone else for their circumstances. When a powerful person is having a disagreement. They are willing to own whatever their part of an issue might be. Even if they believe it is 10% them, and 90% the other person, they are willing to own their 10%. A powerless person remains in difficult situations, because they are scared of making changes. A powerful person is always asking, what is under my control about my circumstance and my relationships? A powerful person is operates out of personal self-control. Fear causes someone to manipulate and control others. If someone is afraid of another person's power, they will try to lie, manipulate, sabotage, or try to control another person. A powerless person has a zero-sum mentality. Powerless people are always in survival mode, so they become selfish. Someone in survival mode can never have vision for their life. When you think the world will overwhelm you, you feel a subconscious responsibility for everyone else...because you feel like others will adversely affect your world. Powerful people are loving people. True power is when you can affect people by your presence. A powerful person has vision and hope for their lives. They are no longer thwarted by obstacles, they see them as part of the journey. Indicators of being powerless is anxiety, stress, fear, never being satisfied, and discord in relationships. Powerless people either live with a lot of drama, or become completely passive and checked out.
