I think of Amaya Rourke as one of the most honest people in the world of alternative spirituality. Her latest work follows this same theme, born out of the pure need to navigate the neverending onslaught of information we are all bombarded with and help others cultivate their intuition in an age of prolific doubt, constant adrenal stimulation, endless contrary opinions, and the overarching and very much intentional hijacking of our ability to imagine, both as individuals and collectively. We discuss Harriet Tubman's unshakable trust in her visions which had life or death consequences in the underground railroad, our total dependence on the health of our dreaming to enable us to imagine better solutions, the powers of trust and conversely doubt, the dangers of outsourcing information in your practice, and much more.We typically don't make a point to promote anything at all on this show, but this current dare I say altruistic work is clearly much needed and I highly encourage everyone to read Amaya's recent substack posts and, if you're vibing, consider signing up for the course. Zoë also taught for many years at her yoga shala in NYC, Ashtanga Yoga Upper West Side. She discovered yoga at the age of 15 and has been devoted to a daily practice ever since. She first traveled to Mysore in 2000 to study with Pattabhi Jois and Sharath and has returned almost annually. She is honored to have received Guruji's blessing to teach in 2002, and level 2 Authorization in 2009. Her PhD centers around a translation of the Aparokṣānubhūti, an Advaita Vedānta text attributed to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, which is particularly relevant to yoga practitioners. It explains how we get caught up in illusions about our bodies and the world and how we could instead use practice to help us discover and be more connected to our essential nature.

We have a repeat guest for you this week, one of our favorite people in the whole wide world. Her name is Linda Lalita Winnick, and she is the founder of Woodstock's Shakti Yoga. Go to enough yoga studios, and you will find that the quality of teaching can be all over the place. Not so at Shakti. Linda's understanding of both hatha yoga - the various yoga poses, and flows – as well as the deeper philosophical aspects of yoga runs so deep that her teaching is not rote; it is spontaneous, in the best sense of the word. She does not teach from memory; she teaches from the heart. We all hear a lot of talk about presence and how to find it. It is always in ample supply during one of her classes at Shakti.   Of course, much of yoga, as taught in the U.S., is more like an exercise class than an exploration of anything deeper. That is not the case at Shakti. A certified yoga teacher, with an M.A. in Ayurvedic Medicine and Yoga Philosophy, Linda's teaching of yoga integrates her over three decades of experience as a yoga practitioner and teacher with the principles of exercise physiology and the energetics of Ayurveda, the Science of Life and Longevity. True to the spirit of yoga, Linda continues to study with a number of teachers, including Dr Robert Svoboda (for Ayurveda and Tantra), Dr Parla Jayagopal (for Ayurveda), and Shubraji (Vedanta), and others. Not that long ago, she invited me and Marguerite to an afternoon talk by Shubraji on the lessons of the Bhagavad Gita. So Shakti isn't just a place to fine-tune your body. It's also a place to fine-tune your soul.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Scott studied for a long time with the founder of Shadow Yoga, Shandor Remete, and he was also a student of Dr. Robert Svoboda. Scott has been teaching yoga since 1997, and he has been an integral part of my life for the past ten years. In today's conversation, Scott shares his journey into traditional Chinese medicine, yoga, and Ayurveda; what lights him up about his work; and his advice to others who are figuring out their purpose. We also discuss the decolonial worldview, waking up the inherent truths inside us, and the important role that yoga can play in this awareness.  Show Highlights: Scott's journey as a pre-med student who discovered yoga as a helpful study tool and dove headlong into eastern medicine, meditation, and spiritual practice How Scott combines spirituality and science How Scott works with patients in his clinic to help them trust traditional Chinese medicine in the western world Why prana is called “the nexus between Ayurveda and hatha yoga” The benefit of cultivating a relationship with prana, which comes subtly into yoga with movements How the efficiency of your circulatory system can determine your biological age Scott's work around Ayurveda and the microbiome–and how science is proving now what Ayurveda has always known The core of Ayurveda: how the microcosm and macrocosm reflect each other What it means to Scott to “live in your purpose” Scott's advice to others who are trying to find their purpose What has helped Scott make it through the pandemic by paying attention to basics, like sleep and mental health  Why it's important to honor the ancestors of our land, our practice, and our families How a decolonial worldview recognizes the inhumane exploitation of people How yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda can be ways to re-light a fire within us to preserve indigenous cultures that have been lost Why we have to allow “all the voices” to grieve together and heal together over racial justice Hear Scott's answers to rapid-fire questions about helpful advice, grounding habits, favorite hot beverage, last meal on earth, morning routine, an inspiring person, something people might not know, what he's reading right now, and what's bringing him joy right now.  Resources: Find out more about Scott's work here: http://www.doctorblossom.com/ (www.doctorblossom.com) Take one of the individual Ayurveda and the Microbiome courses here: https://drsvoboda.teachable.com/courses (https://drsvoboda.teachable.com/courses) You can sign up for all four of the Ayurveda & the Microbiome courses together here: https://drsvoboda.teachable.com/p/ayurveda-and-the-microbiome-bundle (https://drsvoboda.teachable.com/p/ayurveda-and-the-microbiome-bundle) Connect with Scott: https://www.doctorblossom.com ( https://www.doctorblossom.com),https://www.instagram.com/scottblossom/?hl=en ( Instagram) Books mentioned by Scott:   https://www.amazon.com/Kimmerer-Robin-Author-Braiding-Sweetgrass/dp/B01GEXOVSS/ref=teampodcast-20 ( Braiding Sweetgrass )by Robin Wall Kimme https://www.amazon.com/All-About-Love-New-Visions/dp/0060959479/ref=teampodcast-20 (All About Love) by Bell Hooks Connect with me: Want to learn more about the planets? Coen van der Kroon was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1962. He has an academic background in Greek and Latin Languages and Culture. His MA thesis was on ancient Greek gynecology with a comparison between Hippocratic and Ayurvedic Medicine. This was the start of his interest in and study of ayurveda. Coen van der Kroon has dedicated his life to understanding the Indian health science of ayurveda. It has been his mission to clarify the ancient Eastern advice for disease prevention and day-to-day health and well-being so that the implications can be understood by the modern Western mind. He is making this happen through his writing for magazines and books – including an international bestseller – and his teaching, centered around The Academy of Ayurvedic Studies (AAS) in the Netherlands, which he founded in 2005. He himself was privileged to have studied with the most renowned and inspirational teachers in the field of ayurveda and yoga, including Dr. David Frawley, Dr. Sunil Joshi, Dr. Robert Svoboda, Atreya Smith and Dr. Vijith Sasidhar (who are all visiting faculty at the AAS), as well as 3 years at the Ayurvedic Institute with Dr. Vasant Lad, in the USA and hands-on experience in India.

In the classic text of yogic philosophy, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra book 2.46-48 it states: “The posture of yoga is steady and easy. It is realized by relaxing one's effort and resting like the cosmic serpent in the waters of infinity. Then one is unconstrained by opposing dualities.” (Yoga Discipline of Freedom: The Yoga Sutra Attributed to Patanjali, translated by Barbara Stoler Miller) I really love that image that Patanjali uses about the cosmic serpent, Ananta, or “the infinite,” resting afloat on a sea of milk, I imagine feeding on honey, and receiving a foot massage… it's so luscious! In their Yoga International article on these Sutras, Robert Svoboda & Scott Blossom explain that they are: “More literally translated as ‘resolutely abide in good space.'”They go on to define the Sanskrit terms: “The yoga term sukha means happy, good, joyful, delightful, easy, agreeable, gentle, mild, and virtuous... Sthira can mean ‘firm, compact, strong, steadfast, static, resolute, and courageous.” (https://yogainternational.com/article/view/sthira-and-sukha-steadiness-and-ease/ ) Doesn't coming from that space sound like a great way to approach life's challenges? As a teacher and coach, I have seen that a space of physical and intellectual safety is required for optimal learning. I work to build an anti-bias community, expand access to learning, and support students and clients in self-awareness, with a strong sense of identity, respect for others, and justice. Let's ask ourselves today: How much might I be able to luxuriate, like a serpent, in my own movement and stillness? What will you commit to doing today to create the stability and comfort of “Good Space” for yourself and for others? Thanks for joining me in “resolutely abiding in good space” today! 51: The Body and Soul. A conversation with Debbie Mills. How much time do you allow for awareness of how your body speaks? Probably not much. And definitely not as much as today's participant does. In this episode of the podcast, Dr. John Price speaks with Debbie Mills, a healer who works with psycho-emotional energetic integration. Debbie's life experience and practice place her in a unique position to connect with each person that she touches, and they change and transform. In the conversation today, John and Debbie bring awareness to the body as a container, the limitations of the intellectual and thinking mind, how often we oppose the nature of our nature. We each, hopefully, spend ample time learning how to communicate with others by both speaking and refining our thinking so that we make sense to others and working to coordinate with others so that they make sense to us. With that said, we may find that learning to listen to how our body communicates with us is a more daunting task given the nature of the times. Bio: Teaching yoga is a passion for me and I love being able to aid my students in bringing more awareness to every aspect of their lives. I began my private practice in bodywork and energetics in 1993, and started my yoga therapy practice in 1995. I later founded the Lotus Center for Yoga and the Healing Arts in 1998 to work privately with students on asana, cikitsa (therapy), pranayama, sensory withdrawal, chanting and meditation. There is very little that I can say regarding my teaching ability that does not directly reflect upon my teachers and their teachers before them. It is through grace and their guidance that I am able to share my experience. I am grateful and have been blessed to study and sit with many gifted teachers. Following are those who have influenced me in a deep and profound way, and enabled me to impart yogic and ayurvedic teachings: Kumar Palana, Dr. Robert Svoboda, Sri Srivatsa Ramaswami and Swami Sundaranand. Through them I have learned by study as well as transmission; Yoga Philosophy, The Yoga Sutras, Samkhya Philosophy, Ayurvedic Principles, Meditation, Chanting and Sanskrit. These teachings have impacted my entire life and how I live on a daily basis. Like my teachers, I hope to help each student to integrate these teachings in an organic and holistic way, so that they eventually flow out of the student. Respect and Love are primary to my method of working with each student. For it is through deep respect and love for ourselves that we learn the discipline to develop a personal practice. http://www.yogaanddharma.com Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Learn more about this project at: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/
