714: Sean and Thora Dowdell - What You Can Learn from an Upscale Tattoo Studio

The Self-Employed Life

Thinking about the customer experience is a huge part of building a successful business and brand. Sean and Thora Dowdell were able to take the customer experience to the next level and turn the tattoo and piercing model on its head. In 1995, Sean and Thora, along with their partner Chester Bennington started Club Tattoo. They now have six locations, two books, a consulting business called Business Game Changers, and are working on opening several bars in Las Vegas. Sean is the author of Tattooed Millionaire: Building the Club Tattoo Empire and Brand Renegades: The Fearless Path from Startup to Global Brand.    They decided to do things differently and create a new customer-focused experience at their elite tattoo and piercing studios. Every part of the customer experience has been planned out, from who greets the customers at the door to the art and music in the studio. They prioritized cleanliness and created their patented Interactive Tattoo™, touch screens that empower visitors to design their tattoos. They have multiple screens, so there is no waiting and no pressure to hurry up. The screens are also cleaned between each interaction, unlike the old-school tattoo portfolio binders.    We dive into building a unique brand and how any business can be made new and improved with innovation. We talk about how culture has changed when it comes to tattoos and piercings. Sean also shares interesting facts like their customer demographics, which aren't who you would suspect. The best thing about this interview is Sean's passion for branding and creating an unequaled customer experience. We talk about differentiating your brand, letting the customer choose what you will sell, being hyper-focused on what the customers are asking for, and thinking outside the box no matter what business you are in.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Sean and Thora Dowdell thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. Being more productive is a common business goal. We want to get the right things done that will move us forward with our plans. There's no shortage of available books on productivity and when to say no. Today, we are turning that concept on its head and talking about when to say yes. Don Khouri is the author of When To Say Yes: The 5 Steps to Protect Your Time. According to Don, when we say yes, the other things fall into place naturally. When we know what to say yes to, we are positively driving productivity.   Don Khouri, Ph.D., is a speaker, author, and certified executive coach. He is an expert in personal productivity, organizational design, and building high-performing teams as a former vice president who has worked in software development, quality assurance, and market data systems. Don has taken highly complex technology programs from start to finish. He is currently the managing director of Fortune Management Northeast, an executive coaching program for dentists.    He is super excited about his new book, and we dive into concepts like the five-step action plan for saying yes. We discuss the importance of having an actionable plan with real priorities to drive your energy and focus. We also discuss why another productivity book is valuable, the failure of to-do lists, and how to process email productively. We also get into mindfulness and how it can drive productivity, and the importance of celebrating success. Don has put a lot of research into this topic and book. He interviewed multiple C-Suite executives and found what works for some of the most productive people in business.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Don Khouri thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. Revenue doesn't always equate to business profit. As entrepreneurs, we have the power to create intelligent accounting practices that include profit as a priority when money begins coming in. Being profitable is a common struggle for new and established businesses. When business owners are minorities, some of the usual efforts come with additional challenges.    Susanne Mariga is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Tax Coach (CTC), and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). She has over two decades of accounting experience and worked at Arthur Andersen and KPMG before founding her firm. Have you ever wondered why an eight-hour workday is standard for most workers? It's not because of productivity or circadian rhythms. The eight-hour workday was another innovation by Henry Ford. During the industrial revolution, most workers worked 12 to 16 hours a day, six days a week. Ford reduced hours and doubled pay, creating a safer environment and a customer base for his products.  Stephan Aarstol is another innovative leader. In 2015, he reduced the working hours at his company to five-hour days. He thought the gift of time would be an excellent perk to attract the best and the brightest team members and help his brand live up to the surfer lifestyle. Stephan is the founder of Tower Paddle Boards, a direct-to-consumer SUP company. Keeping up with his surf brand, he has now added Tower Electric Bikes.  Stephan was also on Shark Tank and landed a deal with Mark Cuban. He is the author of The Five-Hour Workday: Live Differently, Unlock Productivity, and Find Happiness. He's an entrepreneur, speaker, and author. He's been featured on multiple national publications and news programs. Today, we talk about his five-hour workday experiment and what went right and what didn't go right. We dive into his story and talk about maximizing productivity, valuing time, direct-to-consumer brands, and so much more. Do you know what it means to be business intrigued? Answering that question is what this episode is all about. Many professionals have experience with their craft or trade, but sometimes they have to learn about business through experience and the school of hard knocks. There seems to be a lack of business education in the professions. Kiera Dent is doing her best to bridge this information gap and help professionals get the most from their business.   Kiera is the owner and founder of the Dental A Team, a coaching and consulting business specializing in helping dental practices and other clients increase revenue and save time by running a systemized practice. She has consulted in over 100 dental offices nationwide. Kiera and her team offer in-person dental office coaching to help create a culture and structure that increases efficiency and revenue.    We have a great discussion that tackles leaving school with specialized knowledge but missing the business acumen needed to run a multi-million dollar practice. Kiera shares how she uses a three-pronged approach to help dental businesses run like a business. Loneliness comes in many shapes and forms. There's also a difference between loneliness and isolation. It's predicted that by 2030, the leading cause of death is going to be mental health problems, and loneliness is a huge factor when it comes to mental health. With the pandemic, lockdowns, and Zoom meetings face-to-face interaction has been reduced even more. Dr. Bill Howatt  has over 30 years experience in mental health, addictions, HR, and leadership. He's published over 400 articles and 40 books. His latest book is The Cure For Loneliness, and it's all about feeling connected and escaping isolation. Feeling connected to others is good for our mental health. There is also a wide spectrum of connections from a simple smile from a stranger to a hug from a relative. His book is a step-by-step workbook to help readers move away from isolation and loneliness. We dive into some of the principles in his book and talk about different forms of loneliness. We talk about how you can be lonely even if you're in a relationship. We talk about isolation. We tackle some of the problems that are being exacerbated by the recent pandemic, and Dr Howatt shares some solid advice on how to conquer loneliness and improve our mental health. Loneliness can reduce longevity by 70%. [03:40] Bill has been seeing patients for over 30 years. Loneliness has been seen as more of a symptom and doesn't meet any of the criteria of mental illness. [04:25] Bill talks about the difference between loneliness and isolation and different types of loneliness. [04:53] By 2030, the leading cause of death is going to be mental health problems. What predicts mental health? [07:11] People in relationships where they don't feel valued become lonely. In a relationship, both people need to opt into it and choose each other. [07:59] Loneliness comes in all different shapes and forms. [09:44] The pandemic has actually eliminated the fragility of human beings in that we actually need social connections. We have lost our micro interactions from eating at restaurants to working in an environment surrounded by other people. [13:57] Bill shares a story about a conversation with his dad which illuminates how mental blocks can stop us. [16:46] Our emotional brains don't use logic. We are often wrong and form false conclusions. Our brains will learn our negative thoughts.  [19:12] Lonely people either retrench and push people away or become like a workaholic and hide their emotions. [20:09] Reframing feelings of loneliness. We aren't looking for social connections when we're in work mode, but when we come out of work mode we are. [20:51] People need people. Lonely people don't know how to close the connection gap and meet their needs. [22:55] Zoom and social media are more of a bridge during the pandemic. [23:15] We often look for happiness on the outside. We need to build relationships with ourselves, so people can build relationships with us. [23:44] The key to moving away from loneliness is developing self resiliency and compassion towards ourselves. Happiness means we need to be comfortable in our skin. [24:23] There's nothing humans get more excited about than having a social interaction with someone who they deeply value. [25:09] Introverts still like being around people; they just get a charge from being able to reflect on the day. [25:56] Extroverts need people to charge where introverts need solitude to charge. [27:48] Many people are experiencing a perceived isolation from COVID-19, and they don't know what to do with it. [28:59] There can be a conflict if you only have one person to give you your charge. [29:18] The relationship matrix.  [33:00] You have to be intentional about your mental health just like you need to be intentional with your exercise. [34:18] If you give away more than your relationship matrix requires without getting back, you can be lonely. Prioritize yourself. [34:53] If you're experiencing current feelings of loneliness, put it into context. What is loneliness? What is isolation? Where are you today? Where do you fit in on the relationship matrix? What can you do today? What will the result be? [38:00] If you're in the absence of hope or you don't see a future, it's time to reach out for help. [39:14] Bill's book is based on a cognitive behavioral approach to help people. It's a preventative approach. It's meant to help people have a journey to move away from loneliness or just to improve their relationships. Have you ever thought about the type of legacy you want to leave behind? Have you ever thought about living your life with purpose everyday and living your legacy now? Today, I have a conversation about the impact of your legacy, what you leave behind, and how to live your legacy and purpose now. Codi Shewan is the author of Everyday Legacy Lessons for Living With Purpose, Right Now.    Codi brings such a unique perspective. For years, he was a funeral director. By facing death, he learned lessons about living and life. He's now a speaker, trainer, and consultant whose passion is helping people create impact now and live their best lives and legacies. I love having conversations with people who look at things in a different way. Codi's experience as a funeral director has taught him about living.    He uses some of the things he learned at that time to help people show up powerfully and live their purpose now. We talk about the idea of reframing legacy, the impact you make on the world, and missed moments and regret. Codi says that everyday legacy is how we respond to life's events right now. This information and his unique perspective will help all of us be more present and live our legacy in the current moment.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Codi Shewan thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He can't wait to get back to live presentations.  [04:18] Staring death in the face has taught Codi about living not dying.  [05:03] Codi's book is about how to show up powerful and with purpose right now. He uses some of the constructs that he had during his career as a funeral director. [07:24] One of the biggest things that Codi was able to reframe was the idea of legacy. Understand how your work impacts those you serve and the impact you make on the world. [11:44] Missed moments are one of the things people regret the most. Sometimes we are so close to things that our perspective is myopic.  [13:15] When someone dies, the perspective changes immediately. Don't leave yourself left with a one-way conversation. [15:17] Journeys can have positive outcomes. There's a difference between being present and having presence.  [18:39] A funeral director can create a relationship in a very short time and help families navigate the death of their loved one. [20:55] What will you be remembered for? What is required to achieve what you want to be remembered for? [23:26] Share with people what you value about them and their lives. [28:39] Codi shares the importance of having conversations and interactions to get the best from a person. Enable those around you to have more presence. Micro acknowledgement.  [31:49] Judgment is often from a place of ego. Ego feeds on experience. We have a choice to be judgmental or choose grace. [33:48] Everyday Legacy is how we choose to respond to life's events at the snap of a finger. [36:09] Always lean into who you are and your true authentic self. As we age, we start to realize who is really important. [38:49] Create space for who you are and how to be in this world. [40:57] We wouldn't be who we are today without the summation or collection of all of our experiences. [43:07] Codi continues living his legacy in the Rapid Round. For many, the thought of being self-employed is living the dream. Unfortunately, if you don't take the time to get the numbers and the finances right, your dream could turn into a nightmare. There is so much that goes into setting up a business the right way. You need to understand what income and profit really are. You also need to minimize your taxes and protect your assets. Tatiana Tsoir is a speaker, coach, and accounting expert. She is the CEO and founder of Linza Advisors. She has spent the last 15 years helping small businesses stabilize cash flow, become more profitable, and pay less taxes. She's also the host of the Anything Would Work podcast and Talk to Tiana. She is super excited about her new book Dream Bold, Start Smart: Be Your Own Boss and Make Money Doing What You Love.  In this episode, she shares her extensive knowledge on setting up your business right, when you should have an LLC, and when you should have an S corp. We talk about some of the pitfalls that happen if you don't take the time to set things up right. We also talk about the emotional aspects of business, finances, and numbers that relate to money. She has high hopes that it will help change the world. Her tax business is also booming.  [03:36] The emotional connection between dreaming boldly and understanding financial fundamentals. Many entrepreneurs have bold dreams but have neglected to address the financial side. [04:24] Dream bold is the vision and spark that business owners have. Tatiana wants to help them start smart.  [06:19] The back office of the business. It's where the work behind the scene happens. You have to take care of the back office which includes things like pricing and accounting. [08:42] Gross income is the top line or what you get for your product or service. It doesn't include the expenses that allowed you to get there. Not looking at the bottom line is an approach to failure. [09:43] Gross profit is your sales minus direct cost. What's your cost of sales, equipment, and labor?  If you're not selling any product, you shouldn't be incurring any cost.  [10:47] Income minus expenses is net taxable income. The amount of some deductions will vary. [13:45] Making your first million is really just a number. How much of that did you keep? Profit is separate from your salary. This is your reward.  [17:51] The separation between business and personal and using a legal entity for your business. It's critical to separate the two. It's easier for accounting and audit proofing. Commingling funds can make expenses seem personal. Open a second bank account.  [23:30] An LLC can provide legal liability protection. Without an entity if you get sued, they can go after your personal assets. With an LLC, they can only go after your business assets. [25:03] You will see the most tax with an LLC, but you can easily convert that into more tax-friendly things.  [26:53]  An S corp is a corporation. There is entity tax and the tax on the money you take out of the business. There is a way to create a pass-through entity. Doing this will allow you to pay less taxes. New York City doesn't recognize S corps. You need to beware of local regulations. [30:35] Start with an LLC and see how things go. Once you hit $50,000 of net profit, become an S corp. [34:46] Financial stability helps you wake up with confidence. There's a direct connection between being confident in your numbers in the future of your business. This will help you be emotionally calm and live the life that you want. [39:57] Tatiana looks at her numbers daily. Some people look at affiliate marketing as some scammer trying to push any old product in order to get a commission. If you're not an affiliate marketer, you may have preconceived notions that affiliate marketing is in some way less than legitimate. Today, we are going to set the record straight. The Affiliate Guy, Matt McWilliams is here to talk about his affiliate marketing journey and how affiliate marketing can have a positive impact on the world.  We are specifically going to talk about partnering with other online entrepreneurs to reach a broader audience and get your product in front of those who actually need it. Matt breaks down how anyone can start an affiliate program for their product for free. We talk about some of the tools needed and how to remain ethical while actually doing good. According to Matt, the best partners are ones that help you create value, provide quality, and have a relevant audience. He's not willing to promote a product that he wouldn't be willing to sell to one of his closest friends. Matt has been doing affiliate marketing for over 16 years. In fact, it's how he saved one of his businesses. He has trained more than 300,000 affiliates. He has worked with Shutterfly and Adidas. He's also worked with entrepreneurs like Michael Hyatt, Stu McLaren, Lewis Howes, Brian Tracy, Ray Edwards, Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Shark Tank's Kevin Harrington, and Zig Ziglar. Now that he's acknowledged that, it's made a huge difference in his leadership ability.  [04:43] He also lost 88 pounds and improved his health.  [07:35] Matt has been involved with affiliate marketing for the last 16 years. Affiliate marketing saved his business. [10:33] Matt shares how he realized the actual importance of his job helping businesses by teaching affiliate marketing. He realized he is making a difference.  [15:13] Matt lost 88 pounds with the help of his coach. He felt his weight was holding him back in his business. [19:46] Values, quality, relevance and being able to offer the product to a friend can help you decide if your values are in line with the affiliate program you're looking at. [22:55] When looking at potential affiliate programs always ask what is the best way to serve your audience. It's good to go through it or have someone on your team do so. [26:29] When you promote a program, don't send it to everyone on your list or your new subscribers.  [30:10] If you promote something, always give value. Share how it impacted you and why that is so valuable. Give your subscribers an option to opt out of your further affiliate marketing emails on this one program that you are promoting. [32:02] The best place to start finding affiliates is with your friends and people who have promoted similar products.  [34:35] The four sentence rule. Don't overwhelm your list. You can start an affiliate program for free. [36:02] You can use a tool like ConvertKit to set up a landing page URL that will tag affiliates that send traffic to that URL.  [38:39] Follow best practices, and then test everything else. A/B split testing will help you improve your conversions. [45:26] Matt has a new book called The Passion to Profit Path.  [46:02] The three types of entrepreneurs include the profitable who hate their work, the ones who love what they don't but don't make any money, and the ones who love what they do and make great money.  [48:39] The goal of Matt's business and book is to help entrepreneurs make money and love what they do.  [52:34] Affiliate marketing bridges the gap between having nothing to sell and being able to sell something. Business is business. Many of the same principles of marketing apply to brick and mortar and digital marketplaces. If you want people to buy from you, they need to know you're out there. They also need to understand what you are offering and how you can solve their problems. Then, of course, they need to know, like and trust you. Today, we are talking about how to use cutting edge digital tools to get more eyes on your business and how to nurture those eyes into eventual conversions.  Ryan O'Connor is the founder of Worth eCommerce a portland based email marketing agency. Where Ryan and his partner Dean Dutro help businesses create a bullet proof email strategy to get the attention of their potential customers. They partner with you to create steady growth and track your ROI every step of the way. Ryan has done research at NASA while getting his master's in psychology and has also founded a multi-million dollar phone accessory store.  We kick off the show with methods for capturing attention and eventually getting those prospects to buy. We talk about the importance of first impressions, understanding your audience, and the importance of overcoming objections. We move on to current trends in digital marketing. We talk about how email marketing isn't going away, and we discuss new and fresh ways to use SMS to nurture an audience and build a community.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. [04:01] How do you capture someone's attention with so many competing offers? How do you get them to buy? The same methods used by a store can be used in the digital world. [05:37] Once you've provided value then you can begin to sell or go for the ask. It's up to you to talk about your products and offerings during the right time of your customers Journey. [07:10] Price and psychology of offering a product or service can be different, but it's a similar journey. [09:58] First impressions and the homepage are very important for that first conversion. [13:40] The journey from stranger to customer. Education and trust are important. Once the customer knows it's a perfect fit, they will buy. [16:18] Sales comes down to psychology and understanding your audience. Overcome objections and show the positive things about your offer. [20:01] Current trends in conversions include keeping communication and trust with people who aren't ready to buy yet. The best way to do this is through email marketing and SMS marketing. [21:19] Once you have an email address or phone number, you'll always be able to communicate with your potential customers. [27:23] Sales happen when you talk to people about solving their problems, building trust, and not asking for the direct sale.  [28:54] Ask for an email and then make people who give you their phone number VIP customers. [30:18] Focus on email marketing and building trust and then offer something more to get people to sign up for SMS. Provide value and help people with their lives. [35:53] You can provide exclusive things with extra benefits for those people who really love you and your products through SMS. [40:06] Popular SMS platforms include Postscript, Attentive, and Community. [40:56] With your own text platform, no third-party will own your community. She's really excited about the friends and mentors that have been helping to guide the process. [04:58] Sales can fall flat when audiences don't trust their own knowledge. People need courage in their own convictions to do the research and make the correct decisions. [06:21] We need to rebuild our customers' confidence before building their confidence in us. [09:55] Socially responsible businesses do well.  [14:22] The people we want closest to us are the ones that build us up and make us feel smarter in the world, not those who tear us down. The same goes for businesses. [18:31] Tapping into our customers aspirations. People purchase things from a point of optimism. [21:44] Creating trust through voice, volume, and vulnerability. [22:33] You empower the consumer by making your brand distinct. They understand who you are and how you are by your voice. [23:09] Voice is the consistent and familiar way that you engage in with your audience. [23:54] Understand your goal and then you can make choices around the words you choose and your color scheme. [26:42] Having balance between consistency and novelty. This may not be the time for brands to reintroduce themselves or launch a new logo. People may be surrounded with enough novelty currently.  [29:05] How trust and comfort play nice together. [31:37] Precision in language is not as important as being approachable and familiar. Familiar can be more valuable and useful than precise. [34:12] Use language to meet people where they are, but also introduce other terminology and perspectives to bring them where they need to go. [36:44] Volume. There are different levels of detail visually and verbally and it all goes back to whether you are putting a burden on your audience or helping them. [39:59] You know you've said enough when your customers feel good about the information they have and can make decisions based on that. [41:43] Vulnerability. Different points of view can lose or gain more customers. Sales can go up when you speak up. [45:56] The risk of making your values visible helps your audience find you. Sometimes people assume their leaders have all the answers, at least, until they become the leader. Then they realize that there is a lot of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that can go along with being the person in charge. Marc Pitman puts a unique twist on that doubt that can often plague leaders, business people, and entrepreneurs. He actually believes that we can use the gift of doubt and uncertainty to step into the role of the leader that we are meant to be.    Marc is the author of Ask Without Fear and The Surprising Gift of Doubt. In this conversation, we explore some of the concepts that support Marc's insights behind the gift of doubt. We explore how doubt can be a catalyst that forces us to find and create our own answers. We explore the four quadrants that take us through this process. We also talk about the significance of personality assessments, stories and sources of motivation.   He is an executive coach and speaker, and the founder of The Concord Leadership Group where he has been leading organizations and teams for decades. He's been studying leadership for over 30 years. Marc has a Masters in Organizational Leadership and is certified as a Franklin Covey coach. His passion, knowledge, and wit shine through in this lively interview.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Marc Pitman thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. [03:04] Doubt can invite you to create your own answers.  [07:31] Doubt means that we're on the edge of greatness. When we start out with the leader's journey, we may fail trying to copy others and eventually discover our own answers.  [10:30] In Marc's book, The Gift of Doubt, he talks about the four quadrants.  [11:47] Quadrant one is the confident external quadrant. This is where you model people who you've seen do what you are trying to do. [12:56] Quadrant two is where you start to experiment. A lot of people get stuck in this quadrant, because they don't want to look for internal answers. [15:25] Many people have the answers they need, they just discredit themselves too easily. [17:42] Quadrant three includes some level of vulnerability when realizing where you must go. This is when you step beyond your doubt. Anchoring in. [23:39] Doubt is more self-referential where uncertainty can be externally focused. Leaders know the non-negotiables. [26:39] Quadrant four is where you take internal and external cues and learn to guide people. You have a view of the whole map, and you're able to navigate to where you want to go. [31:38] The influence of personality assessments depends on where you are in your journey.  [34:38] Know the strengths of your motivation.  [36:41] The stories that you tell yourself and the stories that you feel attracted to can be another angle of motivation for you. [40:20] We learn why writing down our goals, dreams, and desires is a step that we all must take and more in the Rapid Round.    Guest Contact –   The Concord Leadership Group The Surprising Gift of Doubt: Use Uncertainty to Become the Exceptional Leader You Are Meant to Be Marc Pitman LinkedIn Marc Pitman Twitter Marc Pitman Facebook Marc Pitman Instagram   Resources –   The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work Getting Things Done Enneagram DISC The Motivation Code: Discover the Hidden Forces That Drive Your Best Work   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Money is such a huge factor in most of our lives. Some of us have a lot and some not as much, but it's really how we think about that money that affects our abundance. In other words, there is a lot of emotion tied to money and how we think about it. That's why today, I have financial expert Bob Wheeler on the show to talk about the emotions behind our finances.    Bob is an accountant and has been on a crusade for personal growth. He noticed that people's attitudes and their emotions around money had a huge effect on their finances. It's now his passion to help others gain insights into how their emotions can trigger financial decisions. Bob is the author of The Money Nerve: Navigating The Emotions Of Money. He is the host of the Money You Should Ask podcast and has a new online course called The Emotions of Money.    He also loves satire, stand-up comedy, and mountain climbing. He's a pretty well-rounded guy, and we have a great conversation about his life as an accountant and what he noticed with his clients' money attitudes and emotions. We talk about the subtle things that can make people feel unworthy and the importance of doing the work. If you want to appreciate what you have, have a better mindset, and move closer to your goals this episode is for you.   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Bob Wheeler thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He noticed that many of his clients wouldn't take the practical sound advice he had been giving them. He realized that we need to get a handle on the emotional component of money. [07:34] It's never too late to look back at the things we learned when we were young. What did our parents, church, or culture tell us about money? What different choices can we make moving forward? [10:49] If you're not aware the system is against you, you might think it's you. Subtle things can make us feel not worthy. [13:49] The first thing Bob asks his clients is if they're willing to be uncomfortable and do the work. [16:11] Understand intentional spending and what the spending in your business is actually accomplishing. [18:18] It's more about life work integration as opposed to balance. Are your decisions in alignment with what you want to happen? [20:25] Start enjoying your life and be excited about what you do now. It's also good to learn delayed gratification and save some of your money. [24:54] Pay attention to the things you say. Write down three things you've recently said about money. Little adjustments can help us see that we're not victims. [28:05] Look at what you have instead of what you don't have. There is a correlation between not enough time or not enough money and thinking in those terms. [29:33] Get clear about what you want and then start breaking it down into baby steps. Come up with blueprints for each of your goals and then continue to evaluate if you still want those goals. [31:17] Finding intrinsic motivation is about mindset. If you want to save, open a savings account and start with $5. This can help with motivation, because it gets exciting as the account grows. [35:31] Balancing that scarcity mindset. Be aware and stop and get grounded. Look at what you do have and what you can be grateful for. Focus on your abundance and what you're happy with to see all of the abundance. [41:10] You have to ask for it. If we don't invite in and welcome what we want and ask for it, we may not get it.  [44:09] Learn what Bob does every morning and more in this Rapid Round!    Guest Contact –   The Money Nerve Bob Wheeler LinkedIn The Money Nerve Facebook Bob Wheeler Twitter   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Are you the CEO of your own well-being? If not, you should be. In the busy hustle and bustle of running a small business and being an entrepreneur, self-care can sometimes get pushed to the side. My guest today is here to talk about why we need to prioritize self-care to do our best work, and she shares a step-by-step approach on how to do so in order to live our best life and do our best work.    Naz Beheshti is the author of Pause. Breathe. Choose.: Become the CEO of Your Well-Being. She is super excited about the release of her new book. In it, she presents a framework to fulfill our highest potential in all aspects of our lives. She learned many of the lessons in the book from her first boss right after college. She was the executive assistant for Steve Jobs. These valuable lessons help her create a holistic method for living her best life, and she's been using these methods with her clients for the past 10 years.    Naz is the CEO and founder of Prananaz, an executive wellness coach and consultant, and a speaker and writer. She has over a decade of experience in tech startups, Fortune 500 companies, and pharmaceutical companies. [03:37] She gets to share her effective method on how to live your best life on a larger scale. [04:38] Naz worked with Steve Jobs right out of college as his executive assistant. He embodied well-being and running a successful company. She had to work hard to provide the excellence that he demanded. [07:13] The inner work that we need to do is a better mindset. It all starts within. We need intrinsic motivation before we change our behavior.  [10:46] Daily consistency is important. Ten minutes is better than zero minutes.  [13:01] Advice for leaders includes shifting from a should mindset to a must mindset and prioritizing. Make time and block it off in your calendar. You are just as important as anything else on your calendar. [16:12] Naz's book includes the seven A's. Adopt is for adopting a healthy lifestyle and achieving your highest potential. Allocate, play and recovery time is all about rebooting your mind, body and creativity. [19:41] Avoid is about avoiding unnecessary stress. It's about taking preventive measures to avoid chronic stress. [19:58] Alter the situation is about making a change to attain a better outcome. Adapt to the stressor is understanding the bigger picture to gain perspective. Accepting what you cannot change helps you have greater peace of mind. [20:22] Attend to connection is about cultivating meaningful relationships and limitless possibilities. [21:17] The three types of stress include acute, chronic stress, and which is the productive and positive stress. [24:25] A sign of chronic stress is lasting for more than six months and having a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness. It feels like an unresolved stress. [25:26] The three p's include pain which we all experienced differently. Prana stands for vital life energy. It's the vehicle that gets us from pain to purpose. We are energized when prana is flowing freely. Purpose can be seen as our daily intentions and our life's mission. [27:27] Pranayama is a very effective way to align your chakras and release negativity and toxins. Getting more oxygen to your brain really helps energize you. [32:04] The MAP Method is a holistic framework to navigate your mindful journey. The MAP is an acronym for master mindfulness, apply better choices to manage stress and create resilience, and the P stands for promote yourself to CEO of your well-being. [34:18] It's about work-life engagement and being engaged in all areas of your life. Naz takes a holistic approach. [36:30] COVID has helped elevate the importance of mental health. Have you ever attempted a joke online and it not only fell flat, but it also offended the person on the other end? Communication in a virtual world is tricky and can be filled with landmines of miscommunication. Dr. Nick Morgan is one of the most respected coaches for speakers. He is an expert communicator and is here to explain the five basic problems of virtual communication and how to overcome them.  Dr. Nick Morgan is a passionate speaker, theorist, and coach. He founded the Public Words consulting firm which helps people convey their ideas with passion and the use of storytelling. He's coached people to give Congressional testimony, to appear in the media, and to deliver unforgettable TED talks. He's written for Fortune 50 CEOs and presidents and has spoken and moderated venues around the world.  His book Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World was published in 2018, and it's more relevant now than ever. It's really a communication manual for remote and virtual work. We talk about problems like lack of empathy, lack of feedback, lack of control, lack of emotion, and lack of connection and commitment. Nick also shares how to solve these issues and convey emotion virtually.   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. People are hardwired to get cues about a person's intent from their senses. [08:23] We've been in a virtual world since the beginning of email and texting. It starts with written virtual communication and then moves on to audio and video.  [10:45] Can virtual communication be more personal?  [13:34] When people really take the time to express what they want to say in written media, it can be more intimate. [16:14] Being a live speaking coach has magnified the aspects of virtual communication for Nick.  [18:17] The five basic problems of virtual communication. Number one is the lack of feedback.  [18:45] In face to face interaction we get instant feedback from the five senses. Our minds assume the worst without feedback.  [22:30] Number two is the lack of empathy. We lose empathy because of the negative assumption. There is a lack of clarity of intent in virtual communication. [25:24] We may need to reflect and actually ask the person how what we said made them feel. This will often clear up a misunderstanding. [26:57] Lack of control. Things are remembered forever in the online world. [30:14] Lack of emotion. The audio of our voice is compressed online. Emotions are carried in the overtones, not the basic pitch.  [35:00] Get clear about your intent. Use emojis to put body language back in. Ramp up the emotion and energy in audio. Use your hands during video.  [39:55] Lack of connection and commitment. If the online world isn't working, we move on. In person, we take stock of the human being.  [44:42] Proprioception awareness of space of the body. This is thrown off online. This is why Zoom calls can be stressful.  [49:55] Nick shares his communication skills in the Rapid Round.     Guest Contact –   Public Words Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World Nick Morgan LinkedIn Nick Morgan Twitter Public Words Facebook   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Having hope and thinking and talking to ourselves in a way that creates positive thoughts and actions is important for success in life and business. Being hopeful and positive is crucial for the mindset of entrepreneurs. Today's focus is all about retraining our minds to think in a more hopeful way. My guest is Thane Marcus Ringler. He's an athlete, entrepreneur, podcaster, author, and a super impressive guy.   Thane is the author of Catalysts for Hope, a book all about unlocking our ability to generate hope when it seems like there is no hope left. We get to learn about the four perspectives that allow us to open up our ability to lead hope-fueled lives. I talk with Thane about how these really do have a profound effect especially for entrepreneurs. We talk about the differences between impossible and improbable, imposter syndrome, and how to avoid limiting ourselves with our own thoughts.    Catalysts for Hope is Thanes second book after From Here to There. Thane began his career as a professional golfer. He's competed all over the world with some of the world's best golfers. After three years in the pros, he was bothered by a persistent injury. While healing, he started a podcast and began writing about what golf teaches us in life. His book eventually turned into a book about the pursuit of mastery.    Thane is now an entrepreneur, speaker, and life development coach. He focuses on clarity of vision, goals, self-awareness, and self-empowerment. His vision is about having a purpose for the greater good and sharing it with others like he does on this episode today.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Thane Ringler thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. [04:10] Thane explains the differences between hope and possibility. The future is full of possibilities that could be either positive or negative. We need to train our minds to imagine a positive outcome. [08:26] We can improve our outcomes by believing in hope and the positive possibilities that could come. [11:11] There are very few things definitely defined in the future. Things we say can unlock a subconscious reality. [13:10] Entrepreneurs are constantly in the process of arriving at their destination. We need to describe the positive, because each moment is different from the rest. [14:35] Pay attention to the way you speak daily. Do you speak in terms that are hopeful? Are your definitions open and descriptive? [16:55] Should is a guilt and shame written word. Saying should is like saying that we're not living up to our expectations and desires. [20:02] If we don't accept our feelings where they are, they will perpetuate. If we don't accept things, we won't be able to improve or remedy the gap. Accept where you're at and work on the person you want to become. [21:45] The four catalysts include process. We are always in the process, because there is always more to come which unlocks so much hope. [22:04] Progress. We can keep making forward progress no matter where we're at. Progress is made one step at a time, and we have a chance to make a step everyday. [25:17] Possibility. Lean into the potential you have. If we only think in probability, we limit ourselves. We have more possibilities than we can easily grasp. Know the distinction between the impossible and the improbable. [31:37] Fear of failure and full commitment is one of our biggest obstacles. Think of imposter syndrome. Don't set yourself up for failure by giving yourself an out. [32:11] Purpose. Having a purpose greater than yourself will give you the most fuel of hope. It's our job to live aligned with our purpose. Full integration sets us up for success. [35:02] Making a difference or a positive impact. We can make a difference every day by showing kindness. We gain more joy from giving than receiving. [39:46] Motivation pushes us forward. Realizing that we are making a difference in another person's life definitely increases motivation. Creating connection has always been important, but in today's world with virtual communication it's especially relevant. Do you ever take the time to think about the impact of your words? Is making every conversation count a priority for you? I have a guest today that is an expert communicator who values the importance of creating intentional connections through meaningful conversation.    Riaz Meghji is the author of Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection that Build Extraordinary Relationships. He is an accomplished broadcaster with 17 years of television hosting experience. His on-camera experience taught him the power of candid conversation and how to put it into practice. He has hosted for MTV Canada, CTV News, TEDxVancouver, and more. He's also a human connection keynote speaker.   In today's conversation, we get to learn what Riaz is excited about now. He also shares his five proven methods for making people feel famous or heard and valued. He values the opportunity to explore and learn something new when having conversations with others. We talk about how to make someone feel appreciated and the importance of building trust.   Riaz shares the importance of documenting conversations and how that information can be a valuable tool to further the relationship when building intentional connections. This entire conversation is a valuable reminder on how to treat people and make them feel special and the rewards that are received by both parties in the conversation.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Riaz Meghji thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He's going to focus on intentional connection as opposed to being on autopilot while going about his daily life.  [04:58] We talk about taking the opportunity to explore and discover something new through conversation and intentional connections.  [05:31] Riaz wants to understand the impact he has and be open to learn from others. He was fortunate enough to do this in broadcasting for 17 years. Now he's lucky enough to spread his ideas by writing about them.  [06:38] Most of us are now learning how to create a profound connection while looking into a web camera.  [07:00] Skills that have served Riaz include knowing to forget about himself. Turn the camera off and look into the lens like you are speaking to one person. He asks how he can cultivate a service mentality.  [09:28] Speak in singular in a virtual world or on stage.  [11:19] There's an opportunity to create a deeper connection in a virtual space, because every audience member has a front row seat to what you are saying. [12:26] Engage with people right out of the gate with a question.  [14:57] People want candid moments through the camera.  [17:32] Always make people feel famous. Riaz has interviewed thousands of guests over the years. Everyone wants a champion in their corner. People want to feel recognized, appreciated, and valued. [18:14] Making someone feel appreciated comes down to the power of praise. Make it specific.  [20:32] Riaz has five tips to make people feel famous. The first one is to document their details. People give you clues as to who they are. Documenting and remembering something important about a person creates respect and trust.  [25:01] Take notes and write down three things about the person that you can reference later. [27:11] Tip number two is remember their name. Riaz shares a story about the importance of remembering people's names. A tip is to focus, comment, and employ. Use their name three times in the first conversation. [31:20] Give them access. People love the behind the scenes things the best. Use social media and pull back the curtain.  [37:34] Show unsolicited appreciation. Surprise someone with appreciation when it's not expected.  [39:48] Shift your brain with the three words I get to. Start your day with three things that you are grateful for. Operate from a place of gratitude not obligation. [44:03] We have the power to teach, inspire, or destroy a person. It's a choice what we do. [44:51] Riaz absolutely rocks the Rapid Round.    Guest Contact –   Riaz Meghji Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection that Build Extraordinary Relationships Riaz Meghji Twitter Riaz Meghji Instagram Riaz Meghji YouTube #EveryConversationCounts: Riaz Meghji at TEDxSFU   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! 658: Fawn Germer - Stay Relevant and Change When the World Changes

The Self-Employed Life

Earning a living is something that most of us have to do. Many people dream of being their own boss but often stay in a job that they don't love, because they think they have security. Sometimes this works out fine and sometimes that security is ripped out from underneath us. This is why I'm such an advocate of self-employment.    My guest today feels the same way. Fawn Germer is a best-selling author and global leadership speaker. She left a job that she thought was very secure and ended up writing her first book. This book earned her an entire file full of rejection letters. She hung in there and not only got published, but the book became an Oprah book.    Fawn is the author of nine books including the Oprah book Hard Won Wisdom and her new book Coming Back. She has been a keynote speaker for more than 80 Fortune 500 companies and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize four times for her work as an investigative reporter. She has interviewed some of the most accomplished leaders of our time.    We talk about how empowering it is to be in charge of your own future. Fawn feels like self-employment is a gift and her mantra is that self-employment is a privilege that has to be earned. She shares so much wisdom from how to deal with doubts to how to stay relevant. We also learn why you have to commit, why you always need a plan, and so much more.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Fawn Germer thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. She's been an author for 20 years and still has it in her. [03:56] Sometimes people become self-employed, because they feel like they don't have any choice. You are in charge. You know your boss. You know you'll get hired. It's empowering to be in charge of your own future. [05:51] Our world has changed so dramatically, that there are things people can do to get income immediately.  [06:02] Fawn feels that self-employment is a gift.  She came up with the mantra that self-employment is a privilege that needs to be earned. Everyday she would ask what she was doing to move herself toward her goals. [06:53] There is an incredible surge of joy and power in creating your own business and career. [09:26] Self-employed people create their day everyday. Fawn will write down everything she has to accomplish for the week and the day. She also has the freedom to go kayak during the day if she wants. [12:38] To make the leap, it's necessary to have a plan. Have a plan and then understand that things may turn out differently. Judge yourself by who you become when things get tough. [14:38] Fawn quit her job and wrote a book and started getting rejection letter after rejection letter. She has an entire file full of them. She kept going and reformatted her book and eventually it sold. [16:17] She traveled the country and kept writing letters to Oprah. Her first book became an Oprah book. [16:56] Keep moving forward, because your biggest enemy is doubt. [18:33] When you have doubts, realize that no career is a straight shot upwards. The bad times will end. Fawn's strategy is accept, cope, and adapt.  [24:04] Fawn shares a great story about not letting security be your dangerous anchor. She quit a more secure job for a new job. The only real security is our belief in ourselves. [27:54] The idea of relevance. When the world changes you need to know it's changing and figure out your place in it. Self-employed people need to see the trends that are coming. [30:20] We need to be insatiable and curious to learn what we need to learn. Always keep learning about the future of your chosen field. [31:47] Read what interests you but also scan the headlines and see what's important to you. [35:49] Understanding the buying patterns of Gen Z will help many businesses future-proof. [37:27] Make up your mind and commit. You're either in or out. You need to be really in it to see success. [38:18] Have a list of goals for each day and week. Fawn always has some type of business plan. She might create a table in Word and write down what she needs to focus on to give herself daily direction. [39:26] Whenever you hit a wall, look at your business plan to see what's not working. Be willing to be honest and know when you need to recalibrate. [40:49] Expect obstacles. Get really good at seeing obstacles. If you don't believe in yourself, no one will believe you. [42:12] You never know how close you are until you turn the corner. Keep going forward a little bit at a time. [42:44] Don't waste money on anything you don't need and always live beneath your means. Make sure what you are doing fits your lifestyle and what you actually want to do. [44:10] Enjoy the roller coaster. [44:26] Fawn tackles the Rapid Round. We learn she always starts her day with a long walk in the woods and more.    Guest Contact –   Fawn Germer Fawn Germer Facebook Coming Back: How to Win the Job You Want When You've Lost the Job You Need Download Your Free PDF "Shortcut" Studies to Stronger Networking and Critical Decision Making   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Is your brand referable? Many brands and businesses ask for referrals, but what if your brand was so distinctive and top of mind that people got excited to talk about it without any incentive? If that's the case, you have a referable brand. This episode is all about what makes a referable brand and things you can do so that your brand is referable.    Michael Roderick is the CEO of Small Pond Enterprises which helps thoughtful givers become thought leaders by making their brands referable, their messaging memorable, and their ideas unforgettable. Michael is here to share his framework for making your brand referable. He goes into how it's all about taking A.I.M. or focusing on accessibility, influence, and memory.    We talk about making your brand stand out in an authentic way that is easy to understand and easy to share. We talk about the questions you should ask and important factors that drive referable brands. Michael dives into the language, emotion, simplicity, and structure that can make your brand stand out in people's minds.    Michael's unique methodology comes from his own experience of going from being a Highschool English teacher to a Broadway Producer in under two years. His frameworks have been featured in Forbes, Business Insider, and popular podcasts like The Art of Charm and Unmistakable Creative. He is also the host of the Access to Anyone podcast. He loves being there for his little ones.  [04:09] Getting referrals is pushing people to do things. Being referable is having people share your thoughts and ideas for you. As a result of this sharing, people just start coming to you.  [05:00] It's how people are talking about you and your ideas when you're not there.  [07:51] What is the emotional driver that makes you so excited that you want to tell everybody about it? It comes down to feeling like you're doing a favor for the person behind the company.  [08:32] True influence is when people will do things without being asked. Have something that's actually useful for the person it's being shared with. [09:08] Think about how sharing your information would make the person doing the sharing look. Podcasts get shared because people want their friends to know about the great information that they heard.  [12:28] People can tell if you're being authentic with the ideas you share. You need to believe in whatever you're putting out there.  [15:38] We don't know what people are going to hook onto. We have to listen to what the market has to say.  [17:02] There are three main principles to becoming a referable brand. They are accessibility, influence, and memory. You can think about it as taking AIM.  [17:29] Accessibility is the first hurdle that we have. Make sure that you are understood by people outside of your industry.  [23:00] With influence we're almost always thinking about the concept of persuasion. People don't share things because they are persuaded or pushed towards it. They share because it makes them look better. [25:28] Think about what's out there and how your point of view could shift things a bit. What's the slight variation of the concept that everybody gets that you can create to add to it? [29:11] Sharing has the power to change someone's reputation. People want to share the things that are going to make them look better. [30:58] People don't want to share things that aren't simple and take too long to share.  [32:59] We spend so much time trying to tell a story well. Memory is a key factor in whether people will retail the story or not. If you want people to remember you more then focus on less.  [33:47] Language. Come up with your own language and the words that express your specific concepts. Give people words that refer back to you. [36:28] Emotion solidifies memory. It's part of our biological makeup. When we're at heightened states of emotion we remember more details. Take the time to tap into the emotion. [38:00] Simplicity. Give your audience away to simplify what you're trying to share with them. [39:41] Structure. We need a logical progression in order to share things. [41:05] Being the best is important, but it doesn't necessarily translate into being a referral brand. Showing your expertise is so much more powerful than telling people about it. You do this by developing your own framework and concepts. [43:44] Michael shares his answers to the Rapid Round including the importance of reflection and self-care.  Guest Contact –   Small Pond Enterprises Access to Anyone Michael Roderick Twitter Michael Roderick LinkedIn   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! One thing most businesses have in common, especially when it comes to marketing, is they need to get noticed. The attention of followers and potential customers is the key to marketing success. What if you could drastically increase your followers? What if your product or business was at the top of everybody's mind? This recognition would ultimately lead to more sales and business success.    It's actually possible to create legitimate recognition through hype. This is the process of getting more eyeballs on your business by generating and leveraging hype for positive purposes. Hype can be used to create legitimate business success. It can be used to help people. It can also be a catalyst for effecting positive change in your community.    Michael Schein is the author of The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers. He is here today to talk about how recognition and hype can be used for legitimate business recognition. We get to learn how his book and the idea of hype is the culmination of his life's work. We dive into several of the book's concepts, and Michael breaks it all down along with several real-life examples.   Michael is the CEO of Microfame Media, A marketing agency that turns consultants into celebrities in their chosen niche. He has also facilitated content creation and production for companies like the Medici Group, Magento, LinkedIn, and more. He has a degree from the University of Pennsylvania and got his start at Spin the Bottle Inc., which is the production company behind the VH1 show Pop Up Video. He has wanted to be a writer since he was 5 years old, and he's also a contributor to several major online publications. [03:52] Recognition and hype are legitimate strategies in business today. A business's biggest challenge is getting eyeballs. [05:58] Human beings respond emotionally to very different stimuli the same way.  [06:23] Michael defines hype as any activity that creates a large emotional reaction in a large number of people to get them to take an action.  [09:18] It's Michael's goal to help great people doing great things use the strategy of hype. [11:48] Picking fights and making enemies. Michael was struggling to get visibility. He wrote a column disagreeing with Gary Vaynerchuk. He received a personal response from Gary Vaynerchuk.   [14:32] Positioning his ideas against Gary Vaynerchuk's ideas launched his career. [17:14] Tribal mentality. The tribal tendency is why creating the us versus them dynamic works so well. We're all tribal about something like an idea or an identity. [20:22] People often get meaning through their tribal identity.  [21:50] Inverting norms. Not all disruption and publicity is created equal. With inverting norms there is already a conversation or trend happening. You want to ride on the coattails of that by flipping it upside down.  [23:34] An example of inverting norms is when the Rolling Stones became the anti Beatles. [24:06] Find your mini Oprah's. She makes careers. Find your niche or area and find an Oprah equivalent in that space and partner.  [26:28] People struggle with change. Small steps make it much easier. [28:39] Are influencers legitimate? Some are really just a new kind of star, but some really do have influence. If the real influencer spread the word about you, you will become noticed. [31:30] Narrative arc. Everyone thinks of themselves as a protagonist in a drama. If you understand that you aren't the protagonist, but the other people are, and what you are offering is the tool to get them where they want to be. [35:06] Start small and reframe what you're doing to help other people's lives. Becoming an entrepreneur is exciting. Most new entrepreneurs and small business people have big dreams and big ideas. This enthusiasm is important when it comes to having the drive and determination to get things off the ground, but it's also important to keep the fundamentals in mind. Avery Swartz is the author of the best-selling book See You on the Internet: Building Your Small Business with Digital Marketing.   Avery is a digital marketing expert, and her book is all about starting with the fundamentals and using a framework to plan and execute a successful digital marketing strategy for small and large businesses. She's here today to talk about how her proven framework along with iteration can lead to a successful digital marketing plan before and after launching your small business.    The information in Avery's book is especially relevant for small business owners. We work through the steps in her framework beginning with the first thing you need to do before anything else. Then we talk about the individual metric that will help indicate whether your business is moving in the right direction. We talk about when to measure, when to leap, and the importance of learning. We also touch on important digital essentials that sometimes get overlooked.   Avery Swartz is an entrepreneur, writer, and speaker. She is the founder and CEO of Camp Tech, a tech workshop for non-technical people. She's the resident tech expert on CTV Your Morning. She was ranked number 5 on Search Engine Journal's Top 50 Women in Marketing list. She writes about tech topics for Chatelaine, Today's Parent, and The Globe and Mail. She loves tech and small business, and it's great to have her here today.     Highlights -   [02:36] Avery has been so busy that the number one thing that she is excited about is rest. It's an essential part of the creative process that allows her mind to regenerate. [04:21] The information in Avery's book scales for different sized businesses, but it's especially relevant for small business owners and people who try to do almost everything themselves. [06:39] There is often a disconnect between the big picture and granular concepts. This is why Avery created a framework that includes the basics. [07:09] Set your goal. Know what you are working towards before diving in. Your goal can define your strategy and become your North Star.  [11:34] Choose your KPI or key performance indicator. This is a metric that indicates your individual business performance. It will differ depending on what your business is and what your goals are. You choose your KPI depending on where your business is at. [15:40] Pick no more than three KPI indicators that are right for your business and put blinders on and only look at that data. We have way too much data and not enough analysis. [19:33] Measure before. You've established your goal and determined your individual KPI, now take a measurement before you get started. Knowing where you're at when you start allows you to see how far you've come when you succeed.  [21:49] Leap! Jump into the unknown even if you don't have the perfect plan. You can make the most informed decision that you can at the time, but eventually you have to jump in and learn as you go.  [23:05] Measure after. You're allowed to admit you chose the wrong KPI, but you're not allowed to switch it at this point. Are you sure you didn't make a mistake at the leap/execution stage? You may need to go through the entire framework again and tweak certain aspects. [25:46] Look for a signal in the noise or something that gives you a sense that you're onto something before giving up.  [26:36] Often the number one goal of doing something new is to learn.  [28:32] The Self-Employed Business School is launching later this year. This is a result of taking a leap and noticing that there was an indicator of need for this information.   [29:50] The framework is iterative and can be repeated. [31:30] Domains are essential. Things to look at include which extension to use and how many similar domains should be registered. [35:16] Digital hygiene or making safety and security on the Internet a regular practice. A password manager is essential. Have a strong unique password for every log in. Avery recommends LastPass.  [42:33] Having a VPN or virtual private network is a great way to protect yourself when logging into networks. It's an extra layer of protection.  [44:17] Choosing a CRM or customer relationship management software can be difficult. Be realistic about where your business is and where you would like it to go. Think about the functionality and integrations that you'll need.  [47:29] Big CRMs like Hubspot and Salesforce can sometimes be overkill. Avery recommends checking out trying something smaller like Insightly or Nimble.  [52:30] Learn a little bit about what drives Avery's success in the Rapid Round.   Guest Contact  -   Avery Swartz Camp Tech Avery Swartz LinkedIn Avery Swartz Instagram Avery Swartz Twitter Avery Swartz Facebook See You On The Internet   Links Mentioned -    The Lean Startup How I Built This with Guy Raz LastPass Tunnel Bear Wirecutter Hubspot Salesforce Insightly Nimble Mailchimp   Join 17,000 other subscribers who want to do business with a soul and receive my Self-Employed Life Nutshell Newsletter by going to nutshellnewsletter.com   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Avery Swartz thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. What do entrepreneurs and comedians have in common? Turns out a lot. From having a strategic mindset to having the determination to keep going, there are so many useful parallels between business and comedy that can benefit entrepreneurs. In my keynote speeches, I often talk about how comedians know how to carve out their niche and attract their ideal audience. Sound familiar?    Today, I talk with Peter McGraw who happens to be an expert on the cross innovation between business and comedy. He introduces us to concepts like architecting a reversal, liminal space, and constraints. There are so many things that good comedians do that entrepreneurs can benefit from. We break it all down in this eye opening episode along with examples and explanations that bring it all home.    Peter McGraw is a behavioral economist who teaches MBAs. He's a professor of marketing and psychology, and he teaches graduate classes in behavioral economics. He also speaks at Fortune 500 companies and universities around the world. He's also the founder of the Humor Research Lab (adk HuRL) where he studies some of the world's funniest people and translates that knowledge into success tactics for business people and entrepreneurs.    He is the author of The Humor Code: A Global Search for What Makes Things Funny and his new book Shtick to Business: What the Masters of Comedy Can Teach You about Breaking Rules, Being Fearless, and Building a Serious Career. His background in business and comedy makes him the perfect person to share how knowing how to make great comedy can lead to the ability to make a great business.    Highlights -   [02:36] Peter gives us a glimpse into his new secret project which is his new podcast Solo: The Single Person's Guide to a Remarkable Life. [03:57] Fusing business and comedy was a natural fit for Peter with his background in business and his study of comedy.  [05:09] Peter shares how it's not about being funny. It's about thinking funny. It's about thinking creatively and innovatively.  [07:26] Parallels between being successful in business and comedy is having a strategy mindset and grinding out the work. [09:16] Architecting a reversal or finding your unique perspective. Producing an opposing perspective is a great way to get a laugh and reverse the status quo. [12:03] Peter shares an example of this using Tony Horton and P90X. Getting in shape isn't easy. It's insanely difficult.  [13:50] Another example of a reversal is creating a dumb phone as opposed to a smart phone. Thinking in reverse can reveal new opportunities.  [15:48] Liminal space is when we transition or move from one space to another. It can also be psychological from one identity to another. Comics constantly live in a liminal world. This creates an opportunity to see the world in new ways. [17:30] Entrepreneurs are often in a liminal space when it comes to personal development and growth. [19:39] Having good health is foundational to succeeding. [21:14] Comedians have an amazing ability to observe. [23:32] If we don't capture and write down our insights, we often lose them. A notepad not a microphone is a comic's most important tool.  [27:45] Constraints and how comedians deal with them and what we can learn. Creativity is finding an original and appropriate solution to a problem. Constraints force us to think harder, think differently, and work harder.  [31:14] Peter shares the lesson of hot tea and ice tea. Trying to make everyone happy makes no one happy. Comics care about making their audience laugh.  [34:17] Taking an improv class is some of the best training you can receive in business. You learn listening and creating comedy out of nothing. [37:40] The key to listening in business is listening to the last thing said. [41:00] Sometimes the thing we focus the least on gives us the greatest reward. Are we focusing on solving our customer's problems? [44:13] Busting up the myth of the lone genius. It's usually a team of people that create innovations. Most successful comics have great writers. Group genius is a result in comedy and business.  [49:45] Peter shares his answers to the rabid round of SELF Sustainability, Elevate, Let's go, and Facing a challenge.   Guest Contact  -   Peter McGraw's Website Peter McGraw's Twitter Peter McGraw's LinkedIn Shtick to Business: What the Masters of Comedy Can Teach You about Breaking Rules, Being Fearless, and Building a Serious Career The Humor Code: A Global Search for What Makes Things Funny Solo: The Single Person's Guide to a Remarkable Life

Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Dave Bone, CEO of San Diego Flooring Pros. Dave is a third-generation flooring pro. For years he worked in his family business in his home town, then for other companies in San Diego, and finally decided to go into business himself.  He knew everything there was to know about selling and installing flooring but needed support in setting up a solo business. In the interview, he discusses the key planks of his success in creating a nimble, lean, and successful company that provides hands-on, personal, custom service to clients: He worked with a super business attorney (hey, hey!) who says: “The number one thing that any business needs to do, especially when they're starting out, is to make sure that they're starting on a solid legal foundation.” Critical first step: He incorporated his business, which (A) protects his assets, and (B) qualified him for Covid stimulus money. He put together a team of experts: business attorney, CPA, marketer, and business coach Kathy Nelson, who was featured in episode 33 of this podcast. Another key piece of the puzzle is the software he uses to organize everything from his initial contact leads to purchase orders and bookkeeping. Listen to the whole interview to learn more about going into business for yourself — with the right kind of professional help. Call 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  My guest is Jesse Morgan, an inventor, and manufacturer who helps other inventors take their ideas to market. After a near-fatal car accident, Jesse invented The Extractor Tool, for cutting yourself free of a seatbelt and smashing open the car window.   He also invented the Ortho-O-Grip, which goes around the handle of everyday utensils and tools to make them easier to grip for those who have arthritis or other conditions that make it hard to handle things. Morgan also makes and sells products he licenses from other inventors, and he’s generous with mentoring advice for how to take ideas from the drawing board to production to sales.  The big takeaway for inventors: He strongly recommends licensing your product rather than incurring the expenses associated with making and marketing it yourself.  Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link. Call the show at 760-784-9109 or email me from our contact page if you have a question. We’ll answer it on the show!  Today I’m talking with Bhavin Mehta, the CEO and Founder of Fusion Factor Corporation, which specializes in helping small businesses become successful by leaving them to focus on their work and business while Fusion Factor focuses on solving their IT (information technology) problems. The three challenges facing Bhavin when he started his business, not uncommon for most entrepreneurs starting out: Acquiring new clients Having the right agreements and contracts in place Executing his marketing We discuss the importance of having the right contracts and agreements in place to protect yourself from litigation and lawsuits. Bhavin reached his first milestone when he hired his first employee, requiring him to put in place the right legal documents, employee manuals, etc.  About marketing when starting your business, Bhavin advises us to be on the internet, social media, and practice good SEO (search engine optimization) on your website. Also beneficial are to have testimonials, and for a business like his, be physically centralized to easily gain access to your clients.  Bhavin’s guide “What Every Business Owner Must Know About Hiring An Honest, Competent, Responsive and Fairly Priced Computer Consultant” is freely available on his website FusionFactor.com. Finally, I ask Bhavin… knowing what you now know, what would you do differently? Not surprisingly, he answers “I’d get my solid contracts in place early, and hire an attorney to understand the legality of what I can and cannot do.” Get your copy of the Go Legal Yourself eBook FREE when you get the APP from your APP Store and also get my latest book “Go Own Yourself” which is available on Amazon from this link.
