This week I sit down with Dr. Stephen Porges, He is a Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium. He is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, and Professor Emeritus at both the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland. He served as president of the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences and is a former recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers across several disciplines including anesthesiology, biomedical engineering, critical care medicine, ergonomics, exercise physiology, gerontology, neurology, neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, psychometrics, space medicine, and substance abuse. In 1994 he proposed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior and emphasizes the importance of physiological state in the expression of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. The theory is leading to innovative treatments based on insights into the mechanisms mediating symptoms observed in several behavioral, psychiatric, and physical disorders. ​ He is the author of multiple books on his Polyvagal Theory: including the Neurophysiological foundations of Emotions, Attachment, Communication, and Self-regulation, as well as Polyvagal Safety: Attachment, Communication, Self-Regulation. His newest book cowritten with his son is called Our Polyvagal World, How Safety and Trauma Change Us. Dr. Porges is the creator of a music-based intervention, the Safe and Sound Protocol ™ (SSP), which is used by therapists to improve social engagement, language processing, and state regulation, as well as to reduce hearing sensitivities. If I told you there was a passive intervention that could help your kiddo and your family increase the window of tolerance in the way the world is received, would you believe me? Well today, I'm sharing a conversation on exactly that — it's called the Safe and Sound Protocol, and it's essentially a therapeutic listening program designed to support emotional regulation and neuroception. I was first introduced to SSP by a therapist our family was working with and I wanted to know more about how it works, and how it can support kids who have what Dr. Mona Delahooke refers to as a less-sturdy nervous system platform. I reached out to educator, author, and bodyworker Autum Romano to join me for this conversation, as she is passionate about nervous system regulation as a foundation for transformative whole health. Autum, who is also neurodivergent and twice-exceptional, is known for her intuitive healing approach. She recently collaborated with Dr. Porges on a case study for his upcoming book on the benefits of the Safe and Sound Protocol, and last year published her own childrens' book called Body Wisdom and the Polyvagal Theory, which introduces polyvagal theory in an easy-to-understand way. This week, Candice sits down with Somatic Trauma Specialist, Magdalena Weinstein. Originally from Chile, Magdalena spent the first 17 years of her life living under the rule of an authoritarian dictatorship. In this episode, she shares about her childhood, her family life, and what motivated her to immigrate to the US in 2004. Magdalena speaks very candidly about the challenges of being in immigrant in America, and about time spent in a series of traumatizing and controlling environments - dictatorship in her formative years that stoked an early hunger for autonomy; years spent as an Iyengar yoga student and teacher striving for whitewashed dominion over her body; and a decade of investment in a coaching program where she experienced mind control and ongoing racial micro-aggressions. She generously shares each of these stories with us, poignantly illustrating what all of these seemingly unrelated experiences have in common. In 2019, Magdalena trained as a trauma specialist; and in the final third of the episode, she helps us to understand how trauma around control gets stored in the body, and what - both individually and collectively - we might be able to do about it. She describes the differences between control and personal agency, particularly when it comes to owning and choosing psychological and somatic states. I cover the main things I noticed immediately after starting the SSP - and I mention a huge realization I had one day whilst sitting at the Murray River and feeling so different in my body (in the best way). In this episode I have a conversation with Chris Paige, LCSW to talk about how trauma affects the nervous system and how modalities like EMDR and the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) can help people integrate trauma. The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) uses specially-filtered music to train the neural network associated with listening to focus on the frequency range of the human voice. Through the SSP program, the vagus nerve becomes stimulated and the state of feeling more safe and calm becomes accessible. Chris Paige, MSW, LCSW is a licensed therapist and coach with more than 28 years of experience resolving trauma. He graduated from Barry University with a Master's of Social Work after completing his undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University. He has worked in a variety of professional and therapeutic settings and has coached professional and Olympic athletes to achieve peak performance. Highly skilled in treating trauma, Chris has been featured on Dateline NBC for his work with children of divorce as well as in the national magazine, Muses and Visionaries, in which he had his own column called “On the Couch with Chris Paige.” Chris is trained in hypnosis, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the Safe and Sound Protocol,  Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and Somatic Psychotherapy-- all of which he incorporates in his work.
