In this episode, we explore a topic that sits at the heart of global digital policy: the contrasting visions of internet governance championed by the United States and its Western allies versus those promoted by China and nations in its orbit. This debate is playing out across various international venues and has profound implications for the future of digital rights, privacy, and the open internet. Justin Hendrix is joined by experts at the Atlantic Council that study these issues from a variety of angles and across multiple geographies, including:Rose Jackson, the director of the Democracy + Tech Initiative within the Atlantic Council Technology Programs;Konstantinos Komaitis, a nonresident fellow with the Democracy + Tech Initiative of the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab;Kenton Thibaut, a senior resident China fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab; andIria Puyosa, a senior research fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab.

Last week President Joe Biden signed into law a measure that would force the Chinese firm ByteDance to divest its ownership of TikTok, or risk the app being banned in the US. The measure also included restrictions on the sale of personal data to foreign entities. What are the implications of these moves for US and global tech policy going forward? What will the inevitable legal challenges look like?To learn more, Justin Hendrix spoke with Anupam Chander, law professor at Georgetown and a visiting scholar at the Institute for Rebooting Social Media at Harvard University; Rose Jackson, the director of the Democracy and Tech Initiative at the Atlantic Council; and Justin Sherman, CEO of global cyber strategies and adjunct professor at Duke University.

They also discuss how this ties into antibiotic reduction and why the industry should still be taking this seriously.
COP28 has come to a close. Since the final day of the conference, we've seen both a number of headlines noting a historic decision and news of climate injustices at this year's event. So what are the most critical takeaways from COP28? To answer, we brought on three guests that attended the conference to take a deep dive into the biggest issues, the decisions that were made, and what comes next. Nina Lakhani is a Senior Reporter for Guardian US, who spent the last two weeks covering COP28. Nina discusses what the final text of the decision means, what was and wasn't accomplished on addressing mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage, and what this could mean for the COP process going forward. Then, Aderonke Ige and Rachel Rose Jackson join the show to discuss how the influence of the fossil fuel industry shaped COP28, what countries were most responsible for blocking progress, and why COP is still an essential event for activists, campaigners, organizers, and climate justice advocates to show up to and fight. Aderonke Ige is the Associate Director for Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa. Rachel Rose Jackson is the Director of Climate Research and Policy at Corporate Accountability. Every year, billions of dollars are spent worldwide on carbon offsets, and the size of the market is expected to grow substantially over the next decade. But do carbon offset projects actually do what they're intended to do in the first place, which is lower carbon dioxide emissions and help communities around the world avoid worsening climate disasters from a warming planet? Researchers at Corporate Accountability and journalists from The Guardian teamed up to answer this question and to dive deep into the claims of 50 of the largest carbon offset projects in the world. Rachel Rose Jackson, Director of Climate Research and Policy at Corporate Accountability, joins the show today to talk about what they found and what else Corporate Accountability is doing to protect our planet and people around the world from extractive and exploitative companies. We first discussed this back in episode 157, but now with a published report, Will and Ben are joined by dairy farmer Robin Campbell and Kite's Head of Genetics; Rose Jackson, to discuss how some farms are consistently achieving 1000kg of fat and protein per cow, per year. Rose starts by giving us some context to the ‘Efficiently Achieving 1000kg report' including the key focus areas, findings and take homes including the impact the first 50 days of a heifers life can have on lifetime performance. Robin introduces his business and shares his inspiration for making changes on farm to improve cow environment and how a focus on genetics has impacted cow performance. Robin & Rose also discuss opportunities for the future, what other farms can learn from this report and how this information will help the wider dairy industry. Not forgetting our usual milk market report from Chris Walkland.

After a very gloomy report from Chris Walkland, we move into something more positive to help farmers with those ever-rising costs; Will and Ben are joined by Jocelyn Johnson, research scientist with STgenetics in the USA (parent company of Cogent) and Rose Jackson, Kite's Head of Genetics to tell us all about the ‘EcoFeed' index. Jocelyn introduces STgenetics and explains the driver behind looking for these genomic traits, how the index was developed and the opportunity it presents to help reduce costs as well as the carbon footprint. Rose explains the EcoFeed genomic traits (both cow and heifer) and the science behind it as a measure of feed efficiency. They discuss why these traits might be of interest to dairy farmers especially now we are starting to see the impact of the EcoFeed trial over here in the UK. With feed as one of the biggest financial costs and biggest impact in terms of our carbon footprint, they discuss how these genomic predictions translate on a practical basis to the amount of feed that a farm might save on an individual level and therefore how it might help to influence decision making on farm and therefore improve efficiencies.

There's plenty more B-words in this chat with the Barker MP in south eastern Australia as we discuss some hot topics in the electorate from Mt Gambier and the Limestone Coast to the Riverland, Barossa and Mallee including regional bank branch closures and Kingston SE's BankSA temporary reprieve. We unpack the approach of the SA and federal Labor water ministers Close and Plibersek on the Murray Darling Basin Plan and buying water from irrigators contrasted with Victorian Labor minister Harriet Shing and NSW Labor shadow minister, possibly soon the minister, Rose Jackson. One thing Tony Pasin isn't buying is the communications minister Michelle Rowland's explanation to FlowFM listeners why a recent 'targeted' mobile black spot funding round overwhelming favoured Labor electorates. We also reflect on recent commentary from treasurer Jim Chalmers about superannuation and whether Labor was up front with the electorate before the May election, like Bill Shorten was in 2019, on its plans for retiree savings.

This week, we have two segments. The first is a conversation with Emerson T. Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council, about the fall of Kabul and the rise of the Taliban, and the role that digital and social media have and will continue to play there. And second, we turn to a discussion I had with Emerson's Atlantic Council college, Rose Jackson, and the Institute for Security Technology's Vera Zakem, about the nascent pro-democracy effort around tech issues and tech policy around the world, and the challenges it faces. First, to Afghanistan, where the fall of the Taliban was broadcast around the world by Taliban fighters themselves, sharing photos and selfies as they walked in to official residences and government offices, announcing their victory in the war in Afghanistan. To talk more about the role of social media in their return to power and what to expect in the future, we spoke with DFRLab's Emerson T. Brooking. Emerson is the coauthor of LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media, and is an expert in the fields of disinformation, terrorist communication, and internet policy, and recently led an initiative to secure the integrity of the 2020 U.S. election. I caught up with on Thursday of this week. Second, on to a conversation hosted before Afghanistan took over the headlines, about the future of democracy and its relationship with technology. My two guests are experts on these subjects. Rose Jackson is an entrepreneur and former diplomat with 15+ years of experience strengthening democracy and defending human rights, leveraging technology for social impact, and building institutions to support democratic activists around the world. Jackson is currently the director of the Democracy & Tech Initiative at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab. She previously founded and served as CEO of Beacon, a platform leveraging data and marketing technology to make it easier for people to take meaningful civic and political action. Prior to founding her company, Jackson served as a senior policy adviser at the Open Society Foundations (OSF) where she led a presidential transition initiative focused on reforming U.S. support to foreign military and police. During the Obama Administration, Jackson served as the Chief of Staff to the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the State Department, and before that as an advisor to Senator Chris Coons on foreign policy and national security issues as a Galloway Fellow. Vera Zakem is currently a Senior Technology and Policy Advisor at the Institute for Security and Technology and a founder of a mission-driven agency, Zakem Global Strategies. Previously, she led strategy and research at Twitter. She has also worked for a number of national security policy and research organizations, including the CNA Corporation, where she spearheaded initiatives to understand and develop policies to counter disinformation and global malign influence. She is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Tech Advisory Council for Atlas Corps.

You'd think online sites like Trade Me and Facebook Marketplace would have marked the end of interest in op shops and dealers in all things retro. But it's not so. Rose Jackson and her partner Matt have travelled the country visiting second-hand shops at more than 380 cities, towns and suburbs around Aotearoa. They've listed the shops on their website Collectors Anonymous, just in time for Christmas - but only after calling them all back to make sure they survived the lockdown period. Rose tells Lynn Freeman that the secondhand book and record stores, vintage and retro dealers and op shops she contacted are thriving.

What if some of the artists we feel as if we know – Meryl Streep, Neil Young, Bill Murray – turned up in the course of our daily lives? That's the basis of this collection of linked stories that follow Rose McEwan, an ordinary woman who keeps having extraordinary encounters with famous people. Nora Parker, Merchandising Coordinator at Kobo, interviews Marni Jackson, author of Don't I Know You? Published by Flatiron Books in New York. In the interview, Nora and Marni discuss: Marni's turn to fiction from her previous books such as Pain: The Science of Why We Hurt and Home Free: The Myth of the Empty Nest The accidental manner by which these stories ended up converging into the linked-stories novel that it became, starting with a short story Marni wrote called “Bob Dylan Goes Tubing” which was originally published in The Walrus in September 2012 How that same “Bob Dylan” short story was inspired by a painting that her son created one afternoon when they were at the cottage How Jackson choose who to include in the stories and how Rose McEwan's relationship to celebrity evolves throughout the tales How Bill Murray is a great character in the book because of the carefully curated and crafted persona of “Bill Murray” that he deftly manages and uses to connect with his fans (or, to use a very Canadian term, as Marni does: “Stick-handles” his fame in a really interesting way The interesting relationship between celebrity and audience and how the audience or fans actually “author” a celebrity's fame The manner by which celebrities don't necessarily exist “out there” in the distance, but that they are very much a part of our creative lives (ie, we may put on one of their songs while we are having sex – a perfect example of how they are incorporated into those intimate moments) The juxtaposition of the journalist in Jackson who enjoyed documenting real elements from the celebrities in this book with the fun and fictional encounters with Rose Jackson's interest in our relationships with celebrities and our relationship to fame rather than in the cult of celebrity The Al Purdy stage show project that Jackson is currently working on based on the film al purdy was here which she co-wrote that her husband, Brian D. Johnson, directed The concerns regarding the mention of famous people in the book and the fact that Jackson's lawyer went through it with her line-by-line to ensure there was nothing that could be construed as libelous or defamation of character After the interview, Mark Lefebvre, Director of Kobo Writing Life and Author Relations, shares some thoughts regarding Author Branding, outlining some ways in which an author can ensure that they are curating and presenting a consistent author persona or brand out into the world. He draws upon a couple of examples that, like in the Bill Murray reference Marni Jackson uses, are Canadian. He uses his own example of the use of the life-sized skeleton Barnaby Bones that he employs for his Mark Leslie horror/paranormal/ghost story author persona. He also explores Hugo and Nebula Award winning science fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer who uses the “Dean of Canadian Science Fiction” element throughout his persona, including the name of his website: SFWRITER.COM. As a final example, Mark looks at the fonts uses in the title for the Netflix original STRANGER THINGS and how that makes a promise to potential viewers.
