Speech Science courses are a key component to the curriculum within a variety of disciplines, but coursework is frequently lacking in terms of representation of those from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In this episode, we talk to Melissa Baese-Berk (University of Chicago) and Paul Reed (University of Alabama), about why it's so important for instructors to use a variety of voices in the classroom, and how to talk about other ways of speaking when one feels ill-equipped to do so. This week Michael has taken the week off but Speech Science is lucky to have Ruchi Kapila step in as a cohost. Ruchi is the Co-Creater and Co-Host of The Hyndsyte Project Podcast. Michelle continues to re-pack for her move back to the state of Texas! Ruchi just returned from presenting at the Northwest Art and Science of the Performing Voice Conference and is looking forward to the next few weeks of being in Texas. Matt finished at the school district for the summer and took his boys camping over the weekend. The crew discuss the need to address trauma and the return to in person therapy and the affect medication may have on dysphagia and patients with Parkinson's Disease. The Informed SLP looks at recommendations for Oral Care with patients with Parkinson's Disease. The shoutout this week goes to MarissaMM and other grad students who have recently passed their Praxis and are preparing for the world of being a CF. The Due Process asks the crew if they would be okay with wearing identification on their name badge identifying if they have received the vaccine or not. The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com. SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout-out? We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, which is recognition for someone doing something awesome somewhere. SSPOD Due Process: Your opportunity to message us about a problem in your area that you would like us to talk about, use the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. Topic #1: As the world of therapy continues to move to in person, the crew discuss the importance of addressing and acknowledging the unspoken trauma that our clients and students have been through. Topic #2: A recent student looked at the impact medications may have on dysphagia in patients with Parkinson's Disease. Medication may lead to poorer oral health conditions and when paired with poor self-recognition of dysphagia symptoms may be putting our patients at risk. The Informed SLP: You're seeing a patient with Parkinson's Disease (PD) who's complaining of difficulty swallowing. Your exam reveals that his overall oral health is in need of some attention. We know the state of our mouths has a lot to do with how we chew and swallow. Maybe this is contributing to his difficulty swallowing? The show has been off the air for the past few weeks to allow for other voices to be heard on matters of significance. We at Speech Science believe there is no room for racism and we will commit to do what we can to shed light and make changes in areas we can. We condemn the murders of George Floyd and Breona Taylor and all those who are not named but are equally important. We believe Black Lives Matter. During this week's show, Matt has finished his Medicaid Billing and has stumbled upon the Harley Quinn show on the DC Universe App. Michelle has returned to work and plans a move across the country to Kansas. Michael has been educating himself and those around him about the impact of Black Lives Matter. On Discord, you can interact directly with Matt, Michael, and Michelle. On today's show, we look at the yearly ASHA Elections results, making parents rescind their rights to waive liabilities, special education and the return in the fall, and ASHA's response to Black Lives Matter and calls to end racism in our field. Also, is AAC another language? What if this means we should be devoting upto 360 minutes per week to AAC development? This week's Informed SLP update, they look at the teach back method. We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process. The ASHA spotlight looks at the yearly ASHA Elections. We also replace the Hot Take with a Hot Seat The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com. ----more---- SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out? We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, which is recognition for someone doing something awesome somewhere. Martin Addison is this week's SSPOD Shoutout. Martin passed away due to complications from COVID. Martin served his patients and this field as a dysphagia expert working with COVID Positive patients. SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. Article #1: In New Jersey, a district has asked parents to rescind their educational rights before offering future educational services, but is this legal? Article #2: Should we be devoting more time to AAC as it could be considered a different language? Foreign language students receive 360 minutes per week but why do AAC users only get 30? The Informed SLP: Remember playing the game telephone as a kid? You sat around in a circle and whispered a phrase until it got to the last person who then said it out loud, usually completely unrelated to the original message. But now it's time to forget what you learned on the playground and say that message out loud to make sure your partner hasn't got it twisted. In fact, we highly encourage it. Episode 64 for Speech Science. Michael continues to work with his private practice, Michelle works on her Kentucky licensure, and Matt plays catch up from 3 calamity days in a row! Microsoft's big game commercial showed off their brand new controller for disabled gamers. Are we collecting data wrong? When do we have time to teach a topic? Parent buy in shows greater growth in late talking toddlers! We are all, probably, teaching reading comprehension wrong.
Episode 61: On this week's episode, the crew dig themselves out of the massive snow storm that swept through the Midwest. Michael discusses his research project on Executive Functioning and Resiliency. Michelle and baby Speech Science work on completing her new licensure in Kentucky after moving across the country. Matt has learned the power of Pokémon. On the show, Matt, Michael, and Michelle discuss the challenges of high functioning Autism. Also, O'Hare Airport has made a fully functional bathroom for travelers with disabilities. Lastly, what's in a toothbrush and why is Oral Care important? Featured in the interview chair this week is Melanie Potock. Melanie Potock is an SLP and pediatric feeding expert better known to her patients/families as "Coach Mel". She joined Michelle to talk about her new book called Adventures in Veggieland and her experiences as a Speech Language Pathologist. She has a wide variety of experiences as an SLP that led her to her to her work with pediatric feeding. Mel is based out of Denver, Colorado. She has authored three books and speaks internationally, helping children and their families eat healthier.
For this special holiday episode, Mai Ling Chan sits down for a fun, lighthearted roundtable conversation with the other hosts of the Xceptional Podcast Network. She is joined by Matt Hott of Speech Science as well as Chris Bugaj and Rachel Madel of Talking with Tech. The four discuss the challenges and benefits of creating a podcast in the special needs market. They also talk about how they first got into an SLP career, staying focused while interviewing guests, their favorite holiday films, and more.
Speech language pathologist and podcast producer, Matt Hott, is one of the hosts of Speech Science. He joins the program to talk about what led him to launch the show and he also discusses not discounting the small beginnings, personal branding, and being genuine with your audience.
"I'm still in this mindset of I have no idea where I'm going to be in the next five years. It messes with my head. It's very exciting because there are so many opportunities and you can go in whichever direction you want, but as someone who is very goal-oriented, it's very bizarre to not really know where the industry is going to be. It's not all in my control." My guest this week is Personal Trainer and Fitness Blogger, Zanna Van Dijk. Her website bio states that she finds it “hard to define her job”. But why define it when you have your finger in an impressive number of pies? These pies include but are not limited to, being: a Trainer, Adidas Global Ambassador, BBC Podcast Host, Author, Blogger, Vlogger, and co-founder of The Girl Gains. A 2014 graduate of the University of Sheffield, Zanna studied Speech Sciences. It wasn’t until her second year at university, when she discovered her passion for fitness, that her idea for her future started to change. After graduating, she set off around the world backpacking. It was this journey of self-discovery that confirmed Zanna’s commitment to a career in fitness. Upon returning to the UK, Zanna moved to London to complete a six-week Personal Training course – and hasn’t looked back since. Over the past few years, Zanna has juggled personal training alongside a whole host of projects to become a famous face in the fitness world and has published her first book called ‘Strong’. Beyond smoothies and squats, Zanna is passionate about sustainability and the environment. An Explorer and Ocean Lover, Zanna recently launched a sustainable swimwear brand called Stay Wild and wants to make caring about the environment cool. When offering advice on starting a business, Zanna says “find your passion, embrace the challenge and you’ll work harder than you ever thought you could.” And work hard is precisely what Zanna has done to get so far aged just 25 years old. Zanna was literally a DREAM to talk to. Having never had a traditional 9-5 job, she's been forging a truly modern career. We talked all about growing up and how bullying shaped her, how she discovered her passion for fitness, deciding not to pursue a career in Speech Science (even if her Mum was a bit disappointed!), the magic of stepping outside your comfort zone... and SO much more. **Follow me:** **Twitter:** @[katiephilo](www.twitter.com/katiephilo) **Instagram:** @[katiephilo](http://www.instagram.com/katiephilo) www.katiephilo.com **Follow Zanna: ** **Twitter:** [@zannavandijk](https://twitter.com/zannavandijk) **Instagram:** [@zannavandijk](https://www.instagram.com/zannavandijk/) **Facebook:** [@zannavandijk](https://www.facebook.com/zannavandijk/) [http://www.zannavandijk.co.uk](http://www.zannavandijk.co.uk)
Maggie Moore has been a Speech Language Pathologist since 2007. After graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor of arts degree in Audiology and Speech Science, she attended the University of South Carolina where she obtained her Master of Speech Pathology (MSP) degree with a specialization in neurogenic speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Maggie was accepted to the neuroscience specialization track and completed an optional thesis entitled "Visual Speech Perception in Acquired Apraxia of Speech." This week on Speech Science, the crew return following the winter break. Matt's voice is almost gone, but Luke, Theresa, and special Guest Erik Raj hold the show together. National trends show that Autism diagnosis may not be on the rise. How true is this data? What are some national trends for therapy? The group uses their expertise to try and figure that out. Dementia affects everyone. Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame, is another celebrity that can shine a light on the disease. What are some current therapy models available?
This week on Speech Science, the crew was once again live on Youtube and answering questions during the first half of the show. Matt got hit by cow, Ivan presented on Speech Science, Dr. Sandiford recounts her TSA experience, and we learned Lucas has family ties to professional bull riding. The topics for discussion include a substitute teacher claims a student is a terrorist and how do we prepare our students for the public perception they may perceive based on color, race, or religion. Lastly, the Young family sat down with Ivan this week to discuss their family and the role they have raising a student with autism.
