Send Me A Message!! Discover the secrets of thriving fruit trees with Susan Poizner, founder of Orchard People and author of multiple books on fruit tree care. In this comprehensive conversation, Susan shares her remarkable journey from BBC journalist to fruit tree expert, sparked by a community orchard project that taught her valuable lessons through trial and error.Susan reveals the often-misunderstood purpose of pruning – not merely for size control, but as the essential foundation for disease prevention and quality fruit production. She expertly breaks down the science behind why proper pruning creates a healthier environment within the tree canopy, preventing the damp, dark conditions that fungal diseases thrive in. You'll learn the crucial differences between winter pruning (which stimulates growth) and summer pruning (which controls size), plus how to choose between open center and central leader structures based on your local climate conditions.Beyond pruning, Susan shares practical wisdom on combating common fruit tree challenges like apple maggot, codling moth, and canker. Her innovative solutions include dormant oil sprays, orchard socks for pest prevention, and proper cleanup practices that break disease cycles. You'll discover why soil preparation matters tremendously and how annual compost application supports tree health from the roots up.Most fascinating is Susan's insight that truly healthy trees naturally repel pests and diseases. By understanding and working with your trees' natural biology, you can create resilient fruit trees that produce abundantly with minimal intervention.Whether you're an experienced orchardist or planning your first fruit tree, this episode provides the essential knowledge to form a successful partnership with these generous plants that can provide beauty and bounty for decades to come. Here's a recipe to try. While this spray is all-natural, it can harm beneficial insects like bees, so be sure to spray at a time when bees aren't active (early morning and late evening). Keep an eye out for bird nests and avoid spraying near them. And remember, you wouldn't want to get this in your eyes or on your skin, so handle it with care!Garlic Fruit Tree SprayGarlic is known for its strong scent, which can deter many types of pests, from aphids to caterpillars and even some types of fungi. Ingredients:1 pound of garlic1 gallon of water (rainwater is best)Instructions:Peel and Mince: Start by peeling the garlic cloves. Then, mince or finely chop them to release the essential oils. The finer, the better.Simmer: Combine the minced garlic with water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer (not a full boil) and let it cook for about 20 minutes. This process infuses the water with garlic's active compounds.Cool and Strain: After simmering, take the pot off the heat and let it cool. Once it's cool, strain the mixture to remove the garlic pieces. A cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer works great for this. You want the liquid as clear as possible to prevent any sprayer clogs.Dilute (Optional): Depending on what you're dealing with, you might want to dilute the mixture. A common approach is to dilute the concentrated garlic water with more water. This step is adjustable based on your needs and the sensitivity of your plants.Bottle Up: Pour the strained, cooled liquid into a spray bottle or a larger sprayer for application. It's ready to use!Apply: Spray it on the leaves of your fruit trees, covering both the tops and undersides where pests like to hide. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to apply, avoiding the hot midday sun to reduce the risk of burning the leaves.Tips:Storage: You can store the garlic spray in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in an ice cube tray and thaw cubes as needed.Test: Always test the spray on a small area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't react badly.Reapply: After rain or watering, you might need to reapply, as it can wash off.

As we begin to wrap up our second growing season here on our homestead this fall, we're grateful for the food we're producing and the progress that we're making. Our property came pretty much “turn-key” for what we were planning to do here, but there is one thing we do wish was already here that wasn't….and that's fruit trees. We've tossed around plans and ideas from the outset, but never got around to planting fruit for one reason or another. They're definitely a long term commitment and, while we know it takes quite a while to get a harvest, we didn't want to make any big mistakes from being too hasty. In today's episode, I get to pick the brain of someone who has been hasty, made lots of mistakes and is now able to teach people like me how to start off on the right track when planting an orchard. Her name is Susan Poizner of OrchardPeople.com who, over 14 years ago got an idea to plant a community orchard in a neglected park in her neighborhood. That decision started her on a journey which, today, finds her using her knowledge and experience as an author, educator, radio host and podcaster. TOPICS DISCUSSED: * Susan's experience establishing a community garden in a neighborhood park * I ask her if I made a mistake by not planting fruit trees right away on our property * The problems with buying what's available at the ‘big box stores' and the importance of selecting the proper trees for your specific needs and conditions * The mistakes that she made when se was in the earl stages of her orchard journey * The pros and cons of raising dwarf fruit trees and how semi-dwarf threes are often preferable as long as you have enough space * The importance of planning for proper pollination * The proper methods for planting bare root trees and how to avoid the most common mistakes * Susan shares her advice for growing fruit trees fast, with minimal effort, as covered in her book “Growing Fruit Trees Fast” * Common signs of fruit trees that are struggling * The many resources available for learning at her website, including a blog, podcast, books and online courses VISIT SUSAN'S WEBSITE: https://orchardpeople.com/ BUY SUSAN'S BOOK 'GROWING FRUIT TREES FAST': https://a.co/d/eAy15Qg SUSAN'S ONLINE COURSES: https://learn.orchardpeople.com/ SHOP AT AZURE STANDARD: https://plansandprovisions.com/azure

Growing Exotic Apples

On this week's episode of Down The Garden Path, Susan Poizner of Orchard People joins Joanne and Matt in the studio to discuss growing exotic apples. Susan is the author of the award-winning fruit tree care book, Growing Urban Orchards. She is also the host of The Urban Forestry Radio Show and Podcast, and offers online courses in fruit tree care. If you're considering planting an apple tree in your yard, Susan suggests thinking outside of the box. Susan delves into apple tree cultivars and how they are developed and explains how to source and order more exotic apple tree cultivars. Cultivars that produce delicious apples may also be easier to grow. In this episode, you'll also learn about the history of apples and how we've transitioned from the hundreds of cultivars from decades past to the only five or six main ones in grocery stores today. We discuss how the best selling Red Delicious apple became less delicious over time and how we can grow even tastier varieties. Susan does warn that this endeavor is not for the faint of heart, as there are many steps involved throughout an apple tree's life. So if you're looking for a low-maintenance fruit tree, this may not be for you. Joanne discusses rootstocks and why they are important, and Susan reviews the differences between Standard, Dwarf and Semi-Dwarf trees and the best ones for your yard. Thinking of planting a fruit tree next spring? Now is the time to place your order! Specialist fruit tree nurseries often take orders up to six months in advance because many cultivars do sell out. You can find Susan’s list of recommended mail-order sources on her website www.orchardpeople.com. This show also appeared as a Facebook Live. View it on the Orchard People YouTube channel.

Not Far From The Tree is a Toronto-based fruit picking project inspired by 3 things: the spirit of sharing, the desire to give back to our community, and a passion for environmentally sustainable living. Lucus Meilach-Boston from 'Not far from the Tree' joins us on this episode to discuss the amazing efforts local volunteers are doing to harvest and protect Toronto's fruit trees. Torontonians with fruit-bearing trees often have fruit to spare – everything from apples, pears and grapes to sumac, apricots and elderberry! Once they register their tree, we’ll pick their fruit and divvy up the harvest 3 ways: between the homeowner, our volunteers, and local food banks, shelters and community kitchens. Fruit Trees bring us Spring flowers, shade, shelter for wildlife, a sustainable source of food. These are just a few of ways fruiting trees and shrubs add value to nature and our urban landscapes. In Toronto however, losing these beautiful specimens and the added value they provide Torontonians is becoming a reality.  We learn how Not Far From the Tree is taking steps to address the health of Toronto's Fruit trees. They are partnering with Susan Poizner from https://orchardpeople.com/  to create a program of educating volunteers and homeowners about Fruit Tree care. Find out more info here:  https://notfarfromthetree.org/orchardstewards/ We enjoy doing Down the Garden path each week to bring you interesting, relevant and helpful topics to help you achieve a great garden or learn about environmental topics. We learn right along with you from each other, from our research or from the guests like Lucas, that join us here.
