Pastor Johnson focuses on clarifying the difference between spiritual gifts and natural talents, a topic he feels he needs to revisit. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing your God-given gift to serve in the body of Christ. Key Points: Time is Short: Pastor Johnson notes that time seems to be speeding up, and God may be shortening it for the elect to better endure. Gifts are from Conversion: Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit upon conversion to Christianity. Talents are from Birth: Talents are natural abilities given at birth, while not necessarily spiritually aligned. Singing Example: Anyone can be taught to sing in key but some have a natural gift that elevates it to a different level. Secular Music and Church: The pastor wrestles with artists who sing secular music but profess faith, and whether God is glorified or the devil is. Double Standard: Pastor Johnson notes the hypocrisy of Christians engaging in activities that don't glorify God and whether those jobs are befitting. Gift List: He goes over a list of seven motivational spiritual gifts from Romans 12:5-8 Prophecy Ministry Teaching Exhortation Giving Ruling Mercy Prophecy: He distinguishes that prophecy as given by God, and often tells what to change and what's coming rather than a blessing. Ministry: He says ministry is about serving, not being served, and is a gift for anyone. Teaching: Teachers of the word are defenders and researchers of the scripture. Exhortation: Exhorters encourage people through the spirit. Giving: Giving to the ministry is a spiritual gift of being a blessing. Ruling: A ruling gift means the ability to lead within a church and its administration. Mercy: The gift of mercy is compassionate and patient with others. Ephesians 4:7 The pastor references Ephesians 4, stating that Jesus himself gives gifts to men. Five-Fold Ministry: He mentions that Jesus gave some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Talents on the Other Hand: He defines a talent as something you're born with that gives you unique skill or ability. Talents are not given, but learned and perfected through practice. Matthew 25: Using the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, he explains that God gives people various natural abilities and expects them to utilize and increase it. Talent vs. Gift: Pastor Johnson ends by saying that while talents can be impressive, they are not to be confused with spiritual gifts, and the spiritual realm outweighs what talent does in the natural. Call to Action: He encourages listeners to discover their own spiritual gifts from God and use it. He says that "when you are converted you get at least one spiritual gift." He encourages Christians to see their talents as skills and learn them, and remember that God gives it all.

Erin & Rick had the pleasure of having a conversation with our friend, Karen Workun. Karen's story is featured in the “Relate, then Educate” book and what a story it is! We discussed the power of reading meaningful literature and how by reading the stories of others, we can step into their shoes and walk around a little bit. We explored some great ways that Karen builds and implements a strong classroom community and culture each year with her students. And this year, Karen is switching things up! She's going to be in the business of teaching teachers… while making sure to visit her first love, the classroom, as much as possible.
We believe it is important that teachers know the role of the school counselor, but as behaviors are changing, our message and training should change too. In this episode we are sharing why teachers need to be trauma informed, and we are also giving rubber meets the road training points to include when you talk to your faculty. And of course we have some laughs along the way.

In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood welcome Lisa Saunders, a 4th grade teacher based in Connecticut. Listen in to gain insight into Lisa's experience at the Teacher Innovation Studio (a program facilitated by Matt) and how it transformed her thinking as an educator. Lisa shares the unique challenge she worked on that led her to become a Teacher Innovation Champion in 2022: “How can I help students regulate their emotions to be prepared for learning throughout the school day by using plickers and a choice board?” Lisa talks about how the data from students' plickers influenced the decisions she made throughout her creative project. She speaks on how she was taught teacher creativity and design thinking in the Teacher Innovation Studio, highlighting the personal challenges she faced with not feeling creative as an educator. “That was my biggest takeaway from this program was flipping the script on my thinking about creativity and how I view it. Now, I see that everything I do is creative. Every time I step into my classroom, I am creatively solving a problem.” – Lisa Saunders Lisa then shares the valuable lessons she learned from being in a teacher cohort and how she's helping her students navigate their emotions and become better problem-solvers. Lisa's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Just go for it! Try something new and if it fails, that's okay. Failure is good! Know that you are creative. Trust yourself and focus on the good. You are doing a great job! Remember how many incredible things you're doing every day. Nobody comes into this world already knowing how to teach—and most students arrive at undergraduate or graduate programs without any teaching experience at all. For those who are selected to be teaching assistants, the prospect of facing a classroom of students for the first time can be terrifying. To assuage those fears and provide pedagogical skills, the Biology department at MIT runs a training program for new TAs; our guest Dr. Summer Morrill helped develop the curriculum for that program, as well as serving as an instructor in it. In this episode, Dr. Morrill describes how she designed the content of the training program to reflect the specific challenges Biology TAs typically face in their first semester. Among the topics she discusses are the importance of empathy and inclusiveness in classroom teaching, how the same habits of thought that make effective biologists can also make especially effective teachers, and ways in which the course materials from the training program (which she is sharing in a forthcoming supplemental resource on OCW), would lend themselves to being usefully adapted for training TAs in other disciplines and at other institutions. In this episode, Hannah is joined by Alison Wiggins, who is Subject Leader for the PGCE in Social Sciences and PGCE Psychology programmes at University College London. Alison discusses how she works with teachers to remove their own personal experiences and beliefs around sex when working with students, and the importance of listening to young people and providing what they themselves tell us that they need. Alison and Hannah talk about the crossover of anti-racism work and sex education, why Alison believes primary school isn't too early to talk about gender roles, and why Alison tells teachers to watch the Netflix show Sex Education! Hannah and Alison discuss how to create a more LGBTQ+ inclusive space in RSE for students and teachers, and why the RSE you deliver in your school won't have any impact unless the culture of your school as a whole reflects the values of equality and safety that you are teaching. Finally, they explain why we should centre pleasure (not just safety) in sex education and uphold it as an important valid reason why people have sex!CW: brief mention of suicide, mentions of sexual harassment and violenceMORE ABOUT ALISON WIGGINSAlison Wiggins is the Subject Leader for the PGCE in Social Sciences and PGCE Psychology programmes at IoE-UCL and leads work across ITE on PSHE, RSE and Anti-racism. Jamie Vesenka is a Professor of Physics at the University of New England. He's been using Modeling Instruction in the classroom and leading workshops for over 20 years and was an earlier pioneer in the physics for life sciences world, while also staying active in Atomic Force Microscopy research. We talk about the basics of Modeling Instruction, physics for life science, and his role as a teacher's teacher. Show notes: www.physicsalive.com/jamie Modeling Instruction website: https://www.modelinginstruction.org/ Selected articles, posters, and presentations by Jamie Vesenka Inexpensive Audio Activities: Earbud-based Sound Experiments A Kinesthetic Circulatory System Model for Teaching Fluid Dynamics Connecting the Dots: Links between Kinetic Theory and Bernoulli's Principle Implications of Modeling Method training on physics teacher development in California's Central Valley Jamie's teaching style is strongly influence by research-based "modeling instruction". This approach to physics learning is based on guided inquiry and Socratic questioning, compelling students to confront physics misconceptions and construct knowledge based on the scientific method. Jamie's introduction to modeling came by accident at a half day modeling physics instruction workshop. During the workshop based on the modified Atwood's Machine, Jamie had his epiphany, or "Ah-hah" moment. He needed to know more, enrolled as the only college professor in Phase III of the NSF sponsored modeling workshops at UC Davis the following summer, and has been a modeling convert ever since. Jamie dove into physics education research recognizing the need to cover fluids in a classroom filled with future medical practitioners. He has been part of the "introductory physics in the life sciences" (IPLS) movement that focuses on conceptual physics essential to students interested in life science careers, which is pretty much most college students taking physics across the country. Jamie rejuvenates his teaching by running summer workshops in which he trains high school and middle school science and math teachers in modeling instruction almost every year since 2000. Over the past year-plus, we’ve talked a lot about the challenges our school systems face and how our students are learning and will continue to learn in classrooms both remote and in person. At the heart of all these discussions are the professionals who work with young people across the country. Today, as we approach Memorial Day Weekend, the “finish line” of the academic calendar, we want to talk about those people, our teachers. So, we hope that you join us in conversation, as we ask: who would want to become a teacher?

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Mandy Yip, CEO and Founder of Acrobatic Arts, Inc. Yip’s company runs training and certification courses for dance teachers in the art of AcroDance — a program that promotes flexibility, strength, balancing, limbering, and tumbling. Acrobatic Arts produces the most comprehensive, researched program available for AcroDance, which explains why the syllabus is followed in over 6,500 dance studios in over 30 different countries. As a lifelong learner, Mandy has attended and achieved certification in countless courses, including contortion, hand balancing, inclusive learning, tap, jazz, gymnastics, and safe coaching, to name a few. And all of these courses have primed her to create her own dynamic training program. On the podcast, Mandy primarily discusses how learning is the key to success in any field — especially dance — and how individuals within the dance industry are particularly keen on being generous with their dance knowledge. Moving Quotes: “I think teachers would be surprised at how much others are willing to share and how generous the industry is with the information that we have. We tend to think of ourselves as a bunch of little islands, and we’re really not. All it takes is a phone call to change that for yourself." “What’s so beautiful about the dance industry and about our industry is that we are so giving… I learned so much from mentors who were willing to let me come and sit." “Mentorship opportunities aren’t just in the phone book or on the Internet. You have to call people and ask, ‘Would you be willing?’" “Our society wants the results without the work. But I think that, as educators, we really need to stay focused on doing the work in order to get the results. That’s in everything." “If we had more women entrepreneurs in the world, we would see a whole rejuvenation of our communities." “I’m just so passionate about making sure that every teacher on Earth has the tools necessary to give safe [acrobatics] instruction. Because it can be very dangerous if it’s done incorrectly." Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:43: Mandy describes Acrobatic Arts, including an overview of its instructional curriculum and how its program has evolved since the pandemic broke out. 9:09: As a trainer of dance educators, Mandy discusses what she believes are some of the most important parts of dance education. 11:53: Yip retells her story — how an early love of dance turned into two thriving self-owned businesses — and discusses the dance industry’s beautiful willingness to teach each other. 17:11: Yip describes the joys and difficulties of entrepreneurship and shares some lessons about starting a business. 22:00: Mandy gives a rundown of the types of programs that Acrobatic Arts offers. 24:28: Mandy, who displays a remarkable business acumen, explains how she received her unconventional business training. 26:28: Yip discusses the importance of women entrepreneurs, particularly in the world of dance. 30:22: Yip shares one key to success for dance teachers, dancers, and general entrepreneurs. 32:31: Mandy explains her company’s road forward, including a look at both short term and long term goals. Today we’re talking to a few of the people who participated in one of Ohio University’s most unique teaching programs: the STEM+ for All Teaching Fellowship. STEM+ is focused on supporting individuals with science, technology, engineering, and math backgrounds — so people who do not already have a background in education — who seek to change their careers to become intervention specialist teachers. Part of the program involves hands-on training with a mentor teacher, and we’re lucky enough to be able to sit down with both two pre-service teachers currently going through the program and the mentor who has guided them throughout the year. Our pre-service teacher guests are Sorpresa Jones and Bailey Lohr, who are both in their third term in the STEM+ for All teaching fellowship, and our mentor teacher guest is Mary Schneider, a master teacher and PAST’s School Design Coordinator. Éanna Ní Lamhna is undoubtedly Ireland’s favourite naturalist and broadcaster. She has served as the president of the Tree Council of Ireland, secretary for the Irish part of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, and as president of An Taisce, the Irish National Trust. She’s worked on the radio show ‘Mooney Goes Wild’ since 1995, and has published a number of books about wildlife and education. During part one of this incredible conversation (recorded in early 2020), hear how an endless emphasis on daisies, daffodils and dandelions led her to writing a book determined to broaden the floral vocabulary and knowledge of young people - “how can you appreciate the exotic, when you don’t know the ordinary?” This conversation heads into a favourite topic for the show - climbing trees, and how children are doing it less and less, and it also explores Ireland’s many links to the natural world, through poetry, stories and in particular place names. You’ll hear quite quickly that with a wealth of knowledge and an unmistakable passion comes modesty, as Éanna charts her success down to “an accident”... but we know the truth! Welcome to another episode of the Modern Moron and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty excited about this episode, even though it means changing one of our healthy slogans. We can no longer claim that this program is 100% celebrity free, because my guest is Cheryl Hines from Curb Your Enthusiasm! They just finished their return to HBO and you would think I would want to ask her about that. But… this is the Modern Moron and also, while I don’t know a lot of celebrities, the one’s I do know I’ve known for a pretty long time and Cheryl and I go pretty far back. So far back that I’m splitting this episode into at least two parts, maybe three. I’m gonna milk this for all it’s worth. I may be a moron but i’m not an idiot. Cheryl and I talk about being cooped up in quarantine with seven… count ‘em seven others ranging in age from 16 to I guess their 20’s? Including her husband Bobbie Kennedy who is not in his 20’s… I don’t think, he looks very young for his age though. We talk about Texas Hold ‘em poker, which she is a pretty avid poker player and has played in some tournaments. She has a regular group she plays with that include some (other celebrities)... yeah, they all hang out together. We talk about her sister who is a doctor, thank you very much, working for United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida and the University of Central Florida in teaching teachers to create curriculum for students of all types from gifted accelerated programs to specialized programs tailored to kids with any and all learning challenges . Only now it all has to be done virtually so there are challenges in dealing with that as well. And if I got any of that wrong, I will hear about it and correct it! Then we get into a discussion about her husbands minivan. … Yeah, that’s what I said. He’s a very successful attorney, author… professor… and I’m pretty sure he can drive um… something else. But he genuinely likes driving a minivan. I think that might have been what attracted Cheryl to Bobby in the first place but she won’t cop to it. So, I’m very excited to Have Cheryl Hines on The Modern Moron! Now, let’s see this is the 64th episode with one celebrity so 1 divided by 64, carry the 7… STILL 98.5% celebrity free… Somewhere around there… thanks for listening. CLOSE Hollywood privilege… C’mon share the wealth on the teleporting Hollywood. Bobby, I want you to know that I have a truck if you even just want to try one out. It’s a slightly ding’d up Ford F150, nice enough that it’s good transportation, but beat up enough that you don’t care if it gets another scratch. Aslo, just throwing this out…. There’s Carmax… and I’ve taken the liberty of including a link at the bottom of the description of this episode to a nice 2009 KIA Sedona EX… for $9,998. For a nominal fee we would have CarMax bring it to Los Angeles… or Boston as the case may be, from um, El Paso, Texas… they do that kind of thing all the time, so don’t worry. It’s a single owner, a new pair of tires to meet Carmax standards, it’s got power sliding doors so if you’ve got groceries or you’ve got your hands full of dead opossums and racoons…. Bam! Electric doors. Says here its also had a deep clean on the interior so you can start out fresh. Nice Kia Sedona under 10 grand. Next time on the Modern Moron I will continue my chat with Cheryl Hines which will include a story about buying a car ironically and some hand holding that had to occur for one of us. We’ll leave the details of that for later. Until then stay safe and healthy, get out your sewing kits and let’s all make some masks, wash your hands, all that stuff.. An you know what? Give away at least ONE roll of toilet paper to someone. Seriously, knock it off with the toilet paper nonsense. See you next time. 2009 Sedona EX with 101K Miles - Carmax.com https://www.ucpcharter.org/

Which is harder, being an algebra teacher or a startup CEO? According to Jeremy Rogoff—who has done both—algebra teacher is harder. No contest. Jeremy is the Founder and CEO of KickUp, which is, in his words, “focused on helping schools and K12 districts understand and improve the impact of their professional learning for teachers.” They use surveys and analytics to help schools understand which of the professional learning the teachers are doing are actually being useful—helping to make the teachers better teachers, and improving student outcomes. Listen to Karl and Jeremy talk about a major pivot, and the important insight that “you have to figure out a) what problem you're solving, and b) does that problem fall into the 'urgent and important' category.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
