032: Helping Children Heal: A New Approach to Grief in Schools - with Deborah Brown

Feel Free Again with Cole James

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2025 59:40

In this heartfelt episode, Cole James interviews Deborah Brown, founder of GIFTS (Grief Information for Teachers and Services), a UK-based initiative focused on supporting children through grief using the Grief Recovery Method. Deborah shares her deeply personal journey through grief, beginning with the death of her mother in 2013 and then her sister in 2016. Both losses were profound and compounded by the pressure to “stay strong” for her children, which led Deborah to suppress her own emotions and carry the weight of unprocessed grief. Her turning point came after a colleague gently encouraged her to seek support, helping her realize that staying busy wasn't healing. That moment prompted her to explore resources, though she struggled to find a grief tool that actually helped—until she encountered the Grief Recovery Method. Deborah later became a certified specialist and began teaching the Helping Children with Loss course to educators, health professionals, clergy, and others who work with children. Through her experiences, Deborah recognized that unresolved grief in children is often overlooked—especially when it comes to losses like divorce, terminal illness in the family, or even the death of a pet. In response, she developed the Lessons in Loss journal series to give kids a safe outlet to process emotions. These include guides for specific events such as losing a parent, suicide, imprisonment of a loved one, and more. Each journal is paired with an adult support guide to equip parents, teachers, and caregivers with practical tools to engage with grieving children. The episode emphasizes the urgent need for adults to do their own grief work so they can model healthy emotional processing for children. As Cole notes, “We can't help kids grieve well if we haven't done it ourselves.” Both he and Deborah challenge leaders and parents to be courageous in facing their own pain—because dysregulated adults can't support dysregulated children. Deborah ends by encouraging listeners to reflect on what might be holding them back from healing and to take action. Her final words: “You need to be able to complete with that… Put yourself first, and don't take anything except the absolute best for you.” Connect with Deborah: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Mrs-Deborah-Jane-Brown/author/B0CCZW3KTZ?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true&ccs_id=d7124efd-a0c2-4833-a155-a528ab5481a8   Timestamps: 00:00 – From Grief to Purpose: Deborah's Story Begins 03:35 – The Loss That Changed Everything 06:45 – A Second Blow: Losing Her Sister Too Soon 10:01 – When Staying Busy Becomes a Mask 13:45 – Anger, Denial, and the Misuse of Grief Stages 17:05 – Grieving Children Are Everywhere—and Often Missed 22:00 – The Power of the Grief Recovery Method 25:41 – Teaching Teachers to Heal: The HCWL Course 29:25 – Why We Must Equip Adults Before We Can Heal Children 33:50 – Lessons in Loss: Journals That Give Kids a Voice

Humans vs Robots: Why Are We Even Competing? From Beijing's robotic half-marathon to AI drones clocking 95.8 kmph, humanoids are getting faster and smarter—but let's not jump the gun. This week, Leslie and Shouvik breaks down why it's way too early to celebrate humans beating robots in races. From Atlas to Sophia to autonomous drone leagues, machines are learning balance, navigating terrain, and gearing up for real-world action. But do we even need to pit them against humans? What's the point of this uneven battle anyway? Teaching Teachers About AI: Delhi's rolling out teacher training programs in AI—but is it just for the optics? We dive into the gaps in our education system, why simply layering AI on outdated curricula won't help, and how the real overhaul needs to begin with rethinking everything: exams, teaching styles, even the role of degrees. As hosts puts it, if teachers haven't upgraded their own “hard disks,” no tech layer is going to help. Ray-Ban Meta in India: They've finally arrived in India, but will Ray-Ban's Meta smart glasses really replace smartphones? We're not convinced. From battery life to privacy to the actual usefulness of having a talking, data-streaming screen on your face, we debate whether this is just another smartwatch moment—or if AR glasses will actually stick. And yes, at some point, you've still got to take them off and look at nature. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Pastor Johnson focuses on clarifying the difference between spiritual gifts and natural talents, a topic he feels he needs to revisit. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing your God-given gift to serve in the body of Christ. Key Points: Time is Short: Pastor Johnson notes that time seems to be speeding up, and God may be shortening it for the elect to better endure. Gifts are from Conversion: Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit upon conversion to Christianity. Talents are from Birth: Talents are natural abilities given at birth, while not necessarily spiritually aligned. Singing Example: Anyone can be taught to sing in key but some have a natural gift that elevates it to a different level. Secular Music and Church: The pastor wrestles with artists who sing secular music but profess faith, and whether God is glorified or the devil is. Double Standard: Pastor Johnson notes the hypocrisy of Christians engaging in activities that don't glorify God and whether those jobs are befitting. Gift List: He goes over a list of seven motivational spiritual gifts from Romans 12:5-8 Prophecy Ministry Teaching Exhortation Giving Ruling Mercy Prophecy: He distinguishes that prophecy as given by God, and often tells what to change and what's coming rather than a blessing. Ministry: He says ministry is about serving, not being served, and is a gift for anyone. Teaching: Teachers of the word are defenders and researchers of the scripture. Exhortation: Exhorters encourage people through the spirit. Giving: Giving to the ministry is a spiritual gift of being a blessing. Ruling: A ruling gift means the ability to lead within a church and its administration. Mercy: The gift of mercy is compassionate and patient with others. Ephesians 4:7 The pastor references Ephesians 4, stating that Jesus himself gives gifts to men. Five-Fold Ministry: He mentions that Jesus gave some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Talents on the Other Hand: He defines a talent as something you're born with that gives you unique skill or ability. Talents are not given, but learned and perfected through practice. Matthew 25: Using the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, he explains that God gives people various natural abilities and expects them to utilize and increase it. Talent vs. Gift: Pastor Johnson ends by saying that while talents can be impressive, they are not to be confused with spiritual gifts, and the spiritual realm outweighs what talent does in the natural. Call to Action: He encourages listeners to discover their own spiritual gifts from God and use it. He says that "when you are converted you get at least one spiritual gift." He encourages Christians to see their talents as skills and learn them, and remember that God gives it all.

Lisa shares the unique challenge she worked on that led her to become a Teacher Innovation Champion in 2022: “How can I help students regulate their emotions to be prepared for learning throughout the school day by using plickers and a choice board?” Lisa talks about how the data from students' plickers influenced the decisions she made throughout her creative project. She speaks on how she was taught teacher creativity and design thinking in the Teacher Innovation Studio, highlighting the personal challenges she faced with not feeling creative as an educator. “That was my biggest takeaway from this program was flipping the script on my thinking about creativity and how I view it. Now, I see that everything I do is creative. Every time I step into my classroom, I am creatively solving a problem.”  – Lisa Saunders Lisa then shares the valuable lessons she learned from being in a teacher cohort and how she's helping her students navigate their emotions and become better problem-solvers. Lisa's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Just go for it! Try something new and if it fails, that's okay. Failure is good! Know that you are creative. Trust yourself and focus on the good. Nobody comes into this world already knowing how to teach—and most students arrive at undergraduate or graduate programs without any teaching experience at all. For those who are selected to be teaching assistants, the prospect of facing a classroom of students for the first time can be terrifying. To assuage those fears and provide pedagogical skills, the Biology department at MIT runs a training program for new TAs; our guest Dr. Summer Morrill helped develop the curriculum for that program, as well as serving as an instructor in it. In this episode, Dr. Morrill describes how she designed the content of the training program to reflect the specific challenges Biology TAs typically face in their first semester. Among the topics she discusses are the importance of empathy and inclusiveness in classroom teaching, how the same habits of thought that make effective biologists can also make especially effective teachers, and ways in which the course materials from the training program (which she is sharing in a forthcoming supplemental resource on OCW), would lend themselves to being usefully adapted for training TAs in other disciplines and at other institutions. Relevant Resources:MIT OpenCourseWare The OCW Educator Portal RES.7-005 Biology Teaching Assistant (TA) Training on OCW (coming soon!)Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions  Connect with UsIf you have a suggestion for a new episode or have used OCW to change your life or those of others, tell us your story. In this episode, Hannah is joined by Alison Wiggins, who is Subject Leader for the PGCE in Social Sciences and PGCE Psychology programmes at University College London. Alison discusses how she works with teachers to remove their own personal experiences and beliefs around sex when working with students, and the importance of listening to young people and providing what they themselves tell us that they need. Alison and Hannah talk about the crossover of anti-racism work and sex education, why Alison believes primary school isn't too early to talk about gender roles, and why Alison tells teachers to watch the Netflix show Sex Education! Hannah and Alison discuss how to create a more LGBTQ+ inclusive space in RSE for students and teachers, and why the RSE you deliver in your school won't have any impact unless the culture of your school as a whole reflects the values of equality and safety that you are teaching. Finally, they explain why we should centre pleasure (not just safety) in sex education and uphold it as an important valid reason why people have sex!CW: brief mention of suicide, mentions of sexual harassment and violenceMORE ABOUT ALISON WIGGINSAlison Wiggins is the Subject Leader for the PGCE in Social Sciences and PGCE Psychology programmes at IoE-UCL and leads work across ITE on PSHE, RSE and Anti-racism. She is also a tutor on the MA Education programme and contributes to the Understanding Research and Feminist Pedagogies and approaches to education modules.  Until earlier this academic year, she was also a part-time Psychology and Sociology teacher in a London Secondary school and sixth form and has been teaching for the last 14 years. She is vocal and active feminist and is passionate about building an equitable Education system and using Education and Social research as vehicles for Social Justice.  Her research interests are focused on issues of Race and Gender equity, and she is currently working with the Equality and Inclusion team in her department to develop our use of Anti-racist practice and pedagogy and is working on the creation of a new module for the MA Education focused on ‘Decolonialisation' in education through curriculum, assessment and pedagogy.  This year, she will also be working with colleagues on cross-institutional research projects focused on the racialised experiences of Minority Ethnic student teachers and is developing an RSE specialism for all PGCE students though her collaborative work with the School of Sexuality Education. Regina McCurdy loved science as a child and also took her faith really seriously, which eventually led to a conflict. But when she was eventually told by a pastor that she didn't have to choose between science and faith, her world opened up. Now she spends her days teaching teachers how to teach science. In the episode we hear her story and then talk about some different aspects of science teaching including the importance of bringing empathy into the classroom and the role race and ethnicity plays in the science classroom. Jamie Vesenka is a Professor of Physics at the University of New England. He's been using Modeling Instruction in the classroom and leading workshops for over 20 years and was an earlier pioneer in the physics for life sciences world, while also staying active in Atomic Force Microscopy research. We talk about the basics of Modeling Instruction, physics for life science, and his role as a teacher's teacher.   Show notes: www.physicsalive.com/jamie   Modeling Instruction website: https://www.modelinginstruction.org/ Selected articles, posters, and presentations by Jamie Vesenka Inexpensive Audio Activities: Earbud-based Sound Experiments A Kinesthetic Circulatory System Model for Teaching Fluid Dynamics Connecting the Dots: Links between Kinetic Theory and Bernoulli's Principle Implications of Modeling Method training on physics teacher development in California's Central Valley   Jamie's teaching style is strongly influence by research-based "modeling instruction". This approach to physics learning is based on guided inquiry and Socratic questioning, compelling students to confront physics misconceptions and construct knowledge based on the scientific method. Jamie's introduction to modeling came by accident at a half day modeling physics instruction workshop. During the workshop based on the modified Atwood's Machine, Jamie had his epiphany, or "Ah-hah" moment. He needed to know more, enrolled as the only college professor in Phase III of the NSF sponsored modeling workshops at UC Davis the following summer, and has been a modeling convert ever since. Jamie dove into physics education research recognizing the need to cover fluids in a classroom filled with future medical practitioners. He has been part of the "introductory physics in the life sciences" (IPLS) movement that focuses on conceptual physics essential to students interested in life science careers, which is pretty much most college students taking physics across the country. Jamie rejuvenates his teaching by running summer workshops in which he trains high school and middle school science and math teachers in modeling instruction almost every year since 2000. A workshop to teach educators how to introduce drones to students, Flirtey is in the news again with another package delivery milestone, and a report on the Hogan Lovells sUAS Part 107 webinar. Guest Princess Aliyah Pandolfi updates us on the exciting projects being undertaken by the Kashmir World Foundation. We last spoke with Aliyah when we covered the DaVinci Build-a-Drone workshop in Episode 124. In order to create a more sustainable program and bring this highly successful STEM program to a broader audience, this special workshop was created for educators who can then teach students at their schools and universities. The first educator workshop is July 11-15, 2016 at Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. Registration deadline is July 8, 2016. Visit www.kashmirworldfoundation.org for more information. Aliyah Pandolfi and David Vanderhoof Aliyah also explains a new project to monitor sea turtle activity with MiSHELL drones. To conduct their research, biologists must painstakingly locate sea turtle tracks on the beach and follow them to the nests. Kashmir World Foundation has partnered with Georgia Southern University at St. Catherines Island to discover how sUAS could be used to greatly increase the efficiency of the process. In addition, Aliyah is conducting a private workshop this summer for girls and technology. This is sponsored by Eagle Ray, a woman-owned business specializing in strategic transformation services.   News Flirtey Conducts First U.S. Ship-to-Shore Drone Delivery Flirtey and a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine doctor have successfully completed the first ship-to-shore drone delivery in the U.S. on the New Jersey coastline. This was at the invitation of Field Innovation Team (FIT), a disaster preparedness non-profit.
