Over the past 200 years, theatre has often been a lightning rod for social and political upheaval in the United States. Even the plays of William Shakespeare have been the subject of violent debate. This surprising history is examined in two recent books by James Shapiro: Shakespeare in a Divided America and The Playbook. Also, we explore Bangarra Dance Theatre's first mainstage cross-cultural collaboration, Horizon. Horizon includes work choreographed by Deborah Brown, a descendent of the Wakaid Clan and Meriam people in the Torres Strait, with Moss Te Ururangi Patterson, of the Māori Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe in Aotearoa and the artistic director of the New Zealand Dance Company.

Today I am speaking with the divine Deborah Brown. Deborah is a descendant of the Wakaid Clan of Badu Island, the Meriam people of Murray Island, and also has Scottish heritage. Deborah grew up in Brisbane, learning jazz, ballet and tap at her local dance school, while also dancing around the family home learning cultural dance. It was an eye opener to a world she never dreamt could be her career. But after finishing school, Deborah moved to Sydney, and while working as an usher at the Lyric Theatre she auditioned for Bangarra Dance Theatre and was accepted. It was a love affair that would last 15 years. Deborah was not only a dancer in the company, but as a principal muse, performing in 16 original works that travelled to 14 countries across the globe. She also turned her hand to choreography, creating works for the company and mentoring young dancers. In this beautiful conversation, Deborah talks about her early life growing up in Brisbane, auditioning for Bangarra, the first time she met Steven Page, and the 15 years she spent with the Company. But Deborah talks about more than that, about the importance of culture, the pressure and obligations that come with that, and how she ultimately made the decision to find life after Bangarra as both a choreographer and film director.Deborah continues to work with companies and dancers choreographing and directing projects all over Australia. She most recently worked with Bangarra to bring Terrain back to the Sydney Opera House stage 10 years after it debuted. To work with Deborah or to follow all of her adventures, you can find her on Instagram @abrowndeborahDeborah and I recorded remotely, with Deborah dialing in from Queensland on the land of the Gimuy people, to whom we pay our greatest respects. A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter's past, present, and future has always embodied music. From church Boy choirs at the age of six to the American Boy choir school in Princeton to the University of North Texas on a vocal jazz scholarship, Walter has become a pioneer of improvisation and electronic innovations in the world of jazz. His recording career spans 20 years and his purist progressive approach to jazz music has been recognized worldwide. After extended studies in Amsterdam with Jazz vocal Icon, Deborah Brown, Walter returned to the U.S. and embedded himself in the New York Jazz scene. The latest album, released on February 7, 2020, testifies to his personal progression as an evolving artisan and provides an intimate, inventive collection of standards and originals. “Dressed in a Song,” produced by Walter and Grammy-winning producer and A&R executive Al Pryor, features piano and vocal duets and trios with veterans and up-and-comers alike, including Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marc Cary, Taylor Eigsti, Julius Rodriguez, Ben Wolfe, Obed Calvaire, and Becca Stevens. Over the decades, Walter has performed as a featured artist at numerous American jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America as well as over 80 tours in Russia. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. We are so thrilled to have our resident therapist joining us again this season. This time to talk about navigating family dynamics, especially as we head into the holidays and will likely be spending more time with family. In this episode Deborah touches on all the struggles and divisiveness affecting families today including politics, covid, drugs, LGBTQ, parenting styles and technology use.She offers up 3 choices we all have when we have disagreements on these and other topics:Compromise, Sacrifice, and Agree to Disagree. Listen as she provides insight into how each of these can work to ease tough family situations. One topic that Deborah dives deeper on is technology use and how it is defining our family dynamics. Technology creates a space for bad behavior and creates a space for dependence. It is disrupting the way families communicate and interact and changing family culture. She cites that:66% of children have negative body image and poor self confidence85% of american suffer from low self esteem, an all time highAnd the result is mental illness rates are at an all time high as well.Listen to the episode to hear her advice on how to reduce technology use in your family. Here is a brief summary of her recommendations:Unified approach between parentsConsistency - kids need it to thrive Provide safety and security and reassurance - don't just rip it away. Have conversations about it, away from it, set up acceptable limits and expectationsSet-up windows and amounts of timeKids need routines, responsibilities, expectations, limits, and safetySome more advice that Debotah leaves our listeners with in this episode:How are we modeling behavior for our children? How are we taking care of ourselves? Are we creating an environment in our home that reflects what we value? How are we planning togetherness as a family?About Dr. Deborah BrownDr. Brown is a psychotherapist and holistic health provider working in private practice. She is a behavioral health researcher and writer, examining how we make decisionsabout our health and our relationships.“For years, I tried to change myself to fit into a world that was confusing, inconsistent, and overwhelming. Deborah Brown-Volkman is the Founder of Surpass Your Dreams, Inc. She's a career strategist who provides both career and Executive coaching. She's written three books on getting the most for yourself out of your career and at work, as well as a couple of books about building your own business or coaching practice. She's an expert on all things career and today Deborah speaks to Jonathan about career planning, how to know if you're on the right career path, and understanding the importance of developing a vision for your career. Deborah talks at length about transparency of pay, how to know if you are underpaid and what specific steps you can take to address this critical component of your career.
With production on the land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation. Skipper talks to Sarah Sudhoff about how she works as an artist, her background as a photographer, arts administrator, and photo editor — and how all of that plays into her work today. Recorded late on a Sunday night, Skipper and Sarah talk about her identity as being half Cuban, how she got her first camera in the fifth grade, how being in a military family influenced her world and personality at a young age, being both the science nerd and the jock, and how she studied astronomy in college before she decided to pursue photography as her bachelor's degree — though she'd really like to work with NASA still. Following that, she worked for Citysearch before landing at Time magazine and received a M.F.A. in Photography from Parsons School of Design in New York. We get into how she wears many hats as an artist, how she multi-tasks as a single parent in her home life, how she collaborates in her work with others, and the necessary resilience of applying for as well as receiving/being rejected for exhibitions, grants, endowments, and fellowships. She and Skipper also talk about the notion of making daunting life decisions at 19 versus 29 or 39. We also talk about several of her works in particular: Point of Origin (https://www.sarahsudhoff.com/current-work), her most recent El Recuerdo (https://www.sarahsudhoff.com/el-recuerdo) project which started as a response to Deborah Brown's paintings (http://nancylittlejohnfineart.com/exhibitions/deborah-brown/) but then evolved to be a tribute to her grandmother and Sarah's biracial heritage, The Reading Brain (https://www.sarahsudhoff.com/the-reading-brain), 60 Pounds of Pressure (https://www.sarahsudhoff.com/60poundsofpressure), Will You Hug me Forever (https://www.sarahsudhoff.com/will-you-hug-me-forever), and her upcoming work Labor Pains. Video from El Recuerdo: Rope by Sarah Sudhoff Video from El Recuerdo: Water by Sarah Sudhoff Sarah says that she's finally feeling worthy to apply for a Guggenheim and MoMA this year — to which we say, Break a leg! When pressed, she talks about how art is hard and her advice for her two children if they wanted to go into some kind of artistic profession. Stay tuned for a bit after the outro music where after Skipper rambles on for a bit and Sarah asks simply, What's the question? Special Guest: Sarah Sudhoff.
