Our first proper episode in a few weeks! Welcome back 2Legs Faithful! For E274 we were honoured to have the esteemed Jeff Slate, a New York City based musician and journalist join us! In this episode we cover a lot of ground! Dylan and Macca's late career albums from 1997 on (Time Out Of Mind & Flaming Pie) being the re-launch for a renaissance for both elder statesmen of rock at the time. "A Complete Unknown", The Beatles solo careers, Wings, Dylan/McCartney's approaches to their archival releases; the standards albums that both have done. Dylan's relationship with George/John and the non-existent one with Macca. We even touch on a little bit of The Who! We dish on how they both sound live currently (double standard ?) and the legacy that both will leave behind. Jeff Slate wrote the liner notes to the 50th Anniversary boxset to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017) as well as the Dylan Bootleg Series Volume 14: More Blood; More Tracks (2018). He has collaborated with Pete Townshend on several projects. He co-wrote a biography on Roy Orbison with Roy's sons. He has also interviewed Bob himself! If this wasn't enough he has his own solo career and he's just recently released his 4th Solo album The Last Day of Summer which features Dave Stewart and Earl Slick. Jeff is known for some controversial "hot takes" and you may hear 1 or 2 in this episode! We love and appreciate honesty here on 2Legs! "Time Out of Mind" is a haunting and introspective album by Bob Dylan, released in 1997. It's often regarded as a late-career masterpiece, showcasing Dylan's gravelly voice and poetic lyricism. The album delves into themes of love, loss, mortality, and redemption, with songs like "Not Dark Yet" and "Love Sick" capturing a sense of existential reflection and emotional depth. Produced by Daniel Lanois, the album's sound is atmospheric and melancholic, featuring sparse instrumentation that allows Dylan's lyrics and voice to take center stage, creating a raw and intimate listening experience.Listen to the album: SpotifyApple MusicLinks:Official websiteContactSupport us on PatreonDISCLAIMER: Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to play pieces of the songs we cover in these episodes. In this episode, Joe reflects on his current state of mind and training in between competitions. He discusses his tendency to not drive things to completion in his jiu jitsu game and his efforts to improve in this area. He also explores his aversion to finishing things and the emotional import of feeling stupid and fucking up. Joe shares his experiences of training without an edge and investing in loss, as well as his mindfulness practices and their impact on his HRV -- and how these practices connect back to jiu jitsu. He concludes by discussing the uncertainty in his professional life and the importance of learning to dance with grace through life. Takeaways Reflecting on performance and identifying areas for improvement is crucial in jiu-jitsu. There can be a reluctance to finish things due to fear of failure or the unknown. Investing in loss and exploring vulnerabilities can lead to valuable insights and improvements. Mindfulness practices, such as HRV breathing and seated meditation, can help in dealing with uncertainty and being present. Learning to dance with grace through life is a valuable goal. Author Michael Gray is this episode's guest to talk about the brand new three-part 50th anniversary edition of his highly acclaimed book Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan. The first edition of Song & Dance Man was the first book to seriously examine the work of Bob Dylan, originating the realm of scholarship that put Dylan on the road to the Nobel prize. Fifty-years and hundreds of Dylan books later, many still consider it one of the very best: Rolling Stone called it “Monumental, endlessly illuminating.” The original Song & Dance Man released in 1972 covered Dylan's work through 1970's Self Portrait, but was expanded in a new edition in 1982, and again in 2000 – growing to over 900 pages and covering Dylan's work through 1997's Time Out Of Mind. But Song & Dance Man has been out of print for over a decade, during which time Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize for Literature, continued delivering critically lauded records, and earned a new generation of fans while sustaining older ones in his seventh decade as an artist. The 50th Anniversary Series puts every word of Song & Dance Man back into print, but in an accessible three-volume format. Michael Gray is here to tell us about the all-new format and what's inside all three volumes.Purchase a copy of Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Volume I, II, & III)Episode PlaylistVisit Michael Grays website ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

Scott talks about the musical inspiration for Highlands, the place he describes, the humor, the Neil Young reference, and more. He also took questions and we talk about both posts and Dylan/Time Out Of Mind in general. Scott wrote really interesting posts on 81 different Dylan songs during the 2021 and 2022 - and they've been broadly praised and discussed and even had some impressive hat tips links from the artists involved. All without ever leaving my studio.” In order to achieve the timeless-sounding recordings on Player, Piano, Lanois and Lorenz set about transforming each of the three pianos in the studio, dampening the strings with tea towels and dulling the percussive impact of the hammers by adding small felt pads to the heads. When it came time to record, they used vintage ribbon mics and arranged them behind the instruments rather than in front in an effort to further soften the sound. “I decided that if I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the ‘40s and '50s, back when the piano was soft and beautiful,” explains Lanois. As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of the modern era, he's helmed iconic albums for everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he's composed scores for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games in addition to releasing more than a dozen genre-bending solo records. Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” (think The Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, Time Out Of Mind), while NPR lauded him as the author of his own “brilliant albums of heartfelt songs.” Player, Piano follows the 2021 release of Lanois' album Heavy Sun, which received wide acclaim from outlets such as SPIN, World Cafe, No Depression and American Songwriter and more. Each song on Player, Piano is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains. More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways.It was a joy to speak with Daniel and he shared some great stories from his past work, including experiences with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers and more.If you dig what we're doing with the podcast, check out our Patreon for bonus material related to these episodes, plus additional interviews and other fun stuff. He is the author of Samuel Beckett's Plays on Film and Television, The Self-Reflexive Art of Don DeLello, and numerous articles and chapters on various 20th and 21st century artists. The premise of the book is that Time Out Of Mind represents a series of dreams, and that the songs on the album make up a single connect song cycle. From there Graley finds what he calls three ‘dimensions of experience’ filtered through the songs -- The first is Murder Ballads, the second is Religious Allegory, and the last is Race in America. The bulk of the book is made up of him showing how the lyrics and songs reflect each of these dimensions. Professor Herren’s book goes deep into the possible meanings and motivations behind the songs on Time Out Of Mind. He’ll present thoughts on how ‘murder ballads’ might play a role in explaining the unified message on this album. In the talk you’re about to hear, Graley summarizes and gives examples of his analysis of the lyrics of Time Out Of Mind in relation to Murder Ballads. This is a recording of a talk he gave to our Premium Members a few months ago, and in the interest of time he narrowed his focus to share just a sliver of one of the book’s three theses.
