He gives a candid account of some of the ups and downs he has faced, while explaining how his business has always managed to make a profit, despite competition from global rivals. Paul Gray is a Research Director for Consumer Electronics and Devices at the analysts, Omdia. With a background in TV manufacturing, he has considerable knowledge on how the business has changed.Brian and Paul offer their views on game-changing - and pointless - TV innovations before considering where companies are investing their money now. Tom Cheesewright, a technology expert and applied futurist, then offers his predictions on what might be coming beyond the current production pipeline. TVs have come a long way in a relatively short space of time and where they are going next might surprise you!Produced by Jon Douglas. It's possible that civilization has run out of ideas for food.  Instead of dreaming-up new dishes… big food is resorting to resizing to make the register ring.   As eating turns to grazing throughout the day… Nestle is now selling what it calls selling smeals.  Smeals.  Small meals… or in their case pint-sized snacks.  Often mashups... Cocoa Puff popcorn. Or Dr. Pepper Cotton Candy.  In business.. they call it brand extension but it's proof we're out of ideas. However. Look what's comin' down the road.  A futurist named Tom Cheesewright… yes… a guy who makes his living predicting the future… says within 20 years… we'll be eating radically different … pizza. He says the lack of water for agriculture could lead to pizza dough that uses crushed-up insects for filler.  Do I need to say “lots of protein?” Your bug pizza crust will be topped by lab-grown meat… the cheese will be charred by laser zapped.  And the craziest part.  Not the first place I've heard this.  The pizza won't come out of the oven…. but from a 3-D printer… that'll squirt tiny bits of ingredients to build a pizza one tiny glop shot from a printer head at a time…. then it's laser grilled. While it's weird a guy named Tom Cheesewright … is making predictions about pizza. For now, I think I'll stick with swiss miss lucky charms cereal… and Slurpee donutsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Change, it's said, is the only constant. And change is an area with which acclaimed author and applied futurist Tom Cheesewright is particularly familiar. He splits his time between future gazing, making predictions about what will impact business and society next, and applying those predictions to his consultative practice. Organisations ask Tom what they should be excited about, where they might need to proceed with caution, and how best to prepare for the coming months and years.  In this episode, Jo Lloyd gets Tom's take on the future of printing. He discusses the impact of the pandemic on attitudes toward print and digital, hybrid working and what he calls the age of ‘high frequency change'.  Tom envisions a world where businesses will have to build for adaptation, not optimisation, in order to keep up with fast-changing customer expectations. He describes a three-pronged approach to future-proofing a printing company's operations, embracing two of our Make It Mantras: Be Different and Be Agile.  The Canon Ascent Programme is a business development initiative, designed to support Canon's Pro Print customers now and for the future. How Great Customer Experience Bridges the Digital Divide

EXPEERIENCE

In this episode of ExPEERience, it's time to look at the realities of delivering great CX in a digital space. How can you make your customers feel connected to your brand through non-human interactions? How far can you go with personalization before it gets “creepy”? And how do you give customers the same experience across multiple platforms? To help answer these questions, I reached out to some great CX leaders from around the world:Marwan Dimas, Group Marketing and Communications Director for Power International Holding, says that designing digital and physical experiences with universal human principles in mind will lead to meaningful experiences.Jay Baer, of Convince and Convert, believes that brands who claim technology limits their ability to be interesting are just using technology as an excuse to actually be disinteresting.Shep Hyken, the Chief Amazement Officer at Shepard Presentations, talks about the need for the switch between human-powered and digital-powered, to be seamless and frictionless.Blake Morgan, customer experience futurist and author, tells me that in a world where B2B is changing to “B-to-me,” smart brands are using technology to make the lives of their customers easier and better.Tom Cheesewright, author and applied futurist, explains that today's customers are not benchmarking you against your direct competitors. They are benchmarking your brand against the best of their digital interactions. Bruce Temkin, head of the Qualtrics XM Institute, discusses the role experience management plays and suggests brands need to apply even more experience management into their digital activities next year than they've done this year.Anne Morriss, Executive Founder of The Leadership Consortium, says that brands that rely on empathy and transparency can strike the balance between personalization and privacy that customers appreciate.Frances Frei, professor at Harvard Business School, shares a simple litmus test to determine which brands actually have empathy with their customers and which are all about themselves. And that's just a start! On the next episode of ExPEERience, the topic is the future of CX. How will advances in technology change what your customers expect from you? And what will those experiences look like tomorrow?I would like to thank the team responsible for the creation and production of ExPEERience: SAP Executive Producer, Melissa Lange; our production partners at Simpler Media, Evo Terra and Sam Walker; and the SAP team Ana Amman, Tram Anh Nguyen, Tara Sorman, Molly Breene, and Amber Hatfield. On this, the final episode in this season of ExPEERience, we're looking at CX of the future. How is what your customers are expecting from their experiences changing? How can we deliver the experiences of tomorrow? And how will technology like AI and machine learning play a part? Here's who is joining me and just some of the future-forward wisdom they're sharing:Blake Morgan, customer experience futurist and author, tells me that the bar for using customer experience as a competitive differentiator is already quite low and that brands will have to go above and beyond with technology, to build experiences that delight tomorrow's customers.Jay Baer, of Convince and Convert, reminds us that CX initiatives are like escalators in that they never reach the top, but just keep going in a circle; and that customer experience is a process, not a project that will ever be completed.Tom Cheesewright, author and applied futurist, doesn't think AI is going to replace the human experience, but that human interaction will climb up the value chain as artificial intelligence gets more capable.Greg Chapman, of The Pocket CMO, sees a future world where predicting behavior and purchase cycles allow things like chatbots to become more personalized and start to deliver significant value to customers' experiences.Chris Brogan, digital and brand strategist, thinks personalization is not even in its infancy, and future AI-driven experiences will be seen as neither creepy nor invasive when they deliver customer experiences people are genuinely excited about.Bruce Temkin, head of the Qualtrics XM Institute, says the true power of AI-enhanced CX will not be about optimizing the decisions customers make, but about optimizing the experiences they have with a brand. And that's just a start!I really hope you enjoyed listening to this season of ExPEERience, and that hearing my conversations with executives, futurists, and thought leaders from across the world has started discussions in your business about how we can all better serve our customers; today and in the future. What governance structures are you subject to? Restrictions are beginning to ease but for many cafes, pubs, shops, clubs and restaurants, the pandemic could be terminal. Museums, galleries, churches and office developments will struggle to justify their continued existence; should they be bailed out by the taxpayer? Perhaps each of us has a moral duty to head uptown on a shopping spree, take in a show and dine out? Yet this is about more than jobs and tourism; it raises bigger questions about the value we put on cities. If a ghost town is sad, a dead city is surely a tragedy. Since ancient Athens, cities, for many, have been the cultural jewels in civilisation’s crown, creative cauldrons of multicultural mingling and springboards to success. Others cite London, for example, as a social, cultural and economic drain on the life of our country. They believe that declining big cities give us an opportunity to revive towns, to end the suburban commuter crawl, beef up provincial culture, restore lost industries, embrace home-working and cut carbon emissions. Are big cities an unquestionable moral good, worth preserving in their current state? Or, in the new post-Covid world, is there a better way of organising the way we live? With Richard Burge, Paul Chatterton, Tom Cheesewright and Dr Jonathan Rowson. Producer: Dan Tierney.

The young Tom Cheesewright found his purpose in life when his mother bought him a copy of the 1979 Usborne Book of the Future. Now he's an Applied Futurist, focusing not on teleportation or interstellar travel but on identifying what is going to take an organisation out at the knees in five years' time. He discovered that the best way to do that was to create a narrative of the future: 'We've got to be able to tell stories when we're trying to compel change.' (Which is why his book High Frequency Change: Why We Feel Like Change Happens Faster Now and What to Do About It is so readable.)  He also discovered that writing a book isn't like writing a paper, it requires a different approach to structure, and he shares how he overcame that challenge. Pure gold.
