(Trigger Warning: Talk of EDs & Fatphobia) Dear Mary, How do I navigate friendship with a very fatphobic and generally-judgmental friend? She is someone I met when I had anorexia. A lot of what we bonded over was the understanding of restrictive eating, because she had struggled with that as well. She is former military and has a lot of military influences to the way she views health and fitness, as well as having parents who engrained fatphobia into her. They would literally sit in the car outside grocery stores and make fun of fat people leaving(not to their faces). Her views and the vocalization of them hurt my soul, they are not an outlook on other people I have ever had, nor would want to have. She talks about these things pretty frequently. A lot of the things she says I would never want my younger sister hearing because I don't want those hurtful views in her head. I know you wonder, this person sounds awful, why do you have this friend? She is in many ways a wonderful person and a good friend. She is thoughtful, she and I just click in many ways, she is giving and loving to the people close to her, I could go on about qualities I love. But lately my feelings toward her are not good. I don't want to be around her because inevitably she will end up saying some things that really bum me out. I want her to be a lifelong friend, I want to be there for her for anything, I want to babysit her kids...but I would never want her views to be shared with mine. How do I talk to her about this? Though we challenge each other's views pretty often and are used to confrontation, she is not looking to change her mind on this. For months now I have been avoiding spending as much time around her. Neither of us have many other friends...she is a treasured person for me. What's your advice on keeping or losing a friend because of this? ***Trigger Warning - Talk of Self Harm and Suicide It is common knowledge that alcoholism is a progressive disease in relation to the volume and frequency of consumption. What is rarely considered is that the loved ones of alcoholics lower their own standards in a progressive way as well. In this episode, Sheri and Matt talk about the origins of our baseline standards, progressive deterioration, and how important it is to return to baseline in recovery. Sheri and Matt start the episode by answering a listener's question Do you want to ask the couple something too? if so, send your question to matt@SoberAndUnashamed.com. If you love or loved an alcoholic, and your recovery could benefit from connection with people who understand, please check out our Echoes of Recovery program.
*TRIGGER WARNING : Talk of Religious Ideology & Childhood Religious Teachings* In today's episode, I sat down with Becca to discuss the way that religious ideologies - specifically from a Christian perspective - can impact our mental health journeys. This topic was requested from a listener of the podcast and although it is not specifically related to BPD, the religious trauma that many of us live with can impact the way we heal and understand the role of mental health in our lives. Religious Trauma is a very nuanced topic so I approached Becca with the hope that her lived experiences, combined with her psychotherapy background, would provide a solid ground on how to speak about ways people can learn to rewrite the narratives they were told for most of their lives. Although we do critique the Christian religion, this episode is not meant to sway your opinion or make you feel like you have to step away from your faith; if anything, I hope this episode will show you that healing comes in many forms and sometimes the religious teachings we heard when we were younger might impede our healing process. If you have any more ideas for episodes or simply want to share your own experiences, please reach out on my Instagram @journey.bound

Episode 108 with Robin Zheng. “My family always called me the absent-minded professor. I'd walk into a room and forget what I was doing, and I'd have to walk back to the room I came from in order to remember.” Trigger Warning: Talk about suicide and suicidal ideation. Dr. Zheng is an academic philosopher. She's originally from the U.S. but spent several years working in Singapore and currently lives in Scotland working as a Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. Her research and teaching focus on moral, social, and political philosophy with special emphasis on issues of gender, race, and class. It was only very recently that Dr. Zheng's therapist suggested that she might have ADHD, and she's still in the midst of the long and drawn-out process of getting a formal diagnosis through the NHS (National Health Service). Nevertheless, simply learning the truth about ADHD has already led to major improvements in her mental health. We talk about her experience with anxiety and depression in an academic setting. She notes that she was particularly motivated to share her experiences on this podcast because she's come to realize that ADHD manifests in a diverse multitude of ways and each new personal story makes it possible for another person to feel that self-recognition and potentially start living a more flourishing life. Dr. Zheng and I also talk about mental health stigma especially in the Chinese-American community, as well as some of the barriers to understanding ADHD and neurodiversity within Chinese culture. On this episode I share information on National Prevention Lifeline if you need somebody to talk to they are there you 24 hours 7 days a week they speak English or Spanish the phone number 1-800-273-8255. I wanted to talk about this because this passed week I heard of two people who ended their journey here on earth and one who had an attempt too close to home. My heart breaks for their loved ones and people who are hurting. I wanted to do a podcast to share things that have helped me and resources to seek help. I share quotes like "your value doesn't decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth" by your tango on pinterest https://pin.it/4Pg9qVh another quote "I want to know that you are worthy of the life of your dreams and the love you seek. The truth is that there's no need to seek this love on the outside because your nature is pure love. When you tap into this love on the inside it will spill out into your life and just like a magnet, bring about everything you desire. You are so very precious and needed in this world. Don't ever doubt that. By Latisha Cotto https://pin.it/2kNavnb last but not least "You deserve to feel the same love you give." By Jaqueline Whitney https://pin.it/47RcCQW. I relay on quotes even til this day to reset my brain for me my mother's love kept me alive God's grace keeps me sane and my boyfriend and his son were my motivation 12 years ago to become a better version of myself. I don't know what to say to people I can only share what I have done for myself in hopes it helps somebody or at least give an idea on what you can work on. To loved ones all we can do is pray send positive energy try to get them help but at the end of the day not a lot of people understand the fights they are struggling in their mind. We're diving into different experiences she has been through working in the music industry - but also her personal experience with the #UtahRapists movement and why she decided to come forward and file a report. She is extremely brave for sharing her story and taking the steps needed to protect other women. We're covering a lot of gray areas within sexual assault - and once again this is such an important topic of conversation. Be sure to check out her incredible music on Spotify and follow her on IG to catch a live show :)IG: @sayshamusichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/03xxq7MRuIQclNkrwf2ZJD?si=FVQ8mRLpR1Ky1uFEb-sjJw&dl_branch=1

Are Autistic people more at risk for Drug Addiction? What is Crystal Methamphetamine withdrawal like? Which factors can help addicts live a life of sobriety? (18+ Trigger Warning - Talk about drugs and physical abuse) In this episode of the Thoughty Auti Podcast, Thomas Henley talks to Francesca from @Neurodivergent FranchFries - an autistic creator on YouTube and Instagram, as well as the owner of the clothing brand SickForTrees. Francesca kicks us off the podcast by telling us about her Youtube channel and the difficulties she faced during COVID-19. Snowboarding is something that has transformed her life, giving her a more healthy outlet for stress; she shares her many exciting stories on getting into the sport! Despite its location and situation near the USA, Mexico remains an area with little scientific development and low autism awareness. Diagnosed with ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome (Autism/ASD-1), she was seen as a problem child by her father; her difficulties with social communication left her depressed and a big target for bullies. When her parents left for the USA, she was left for weeks in Mexico where she sought housing at a local drug dealers home - once in the USA she faced workplace discrimination and a lower quality of life due to the poor support/education systems in place. With her unstable family relations, Francesca flicked a switch and started experimenting with drugs. Tobacco, alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, and her drug of choice... Crystal Methamphetamine. Francesca highlights that her addiction was likely a consequence of poor relations with her father and her difficulties with socialising - drug use opened up a gateway to feel valued in a group, an experience shared by the other 'social rejects' in the drug circle. Withdrawals hit hard, self-esteem drastically diminished, and she knew that something needed to be done. Recovery came slow, but these factors helped her get out of that dark place: Changing her mindset on social interaction, ditching toxic friend groups, finding a new a hobby, setting-up her own business, and most importantly... feeling loved and valued by her close peers. I know this is a little different to my usual podcast, and I'm taking a risk talking about such a controversial topic. This video took many hours to edit and perfect, so any support is massively appreciated! *TRIGGER WARNING: Talk of addiction and being the spouse of an addict.Adam and Danielle have experienced both sides of gambling: the fun, exciting side, when winning is an adrenaline rush and getting caught up in the moment feels incredibly fun and exhilarating. But they've also experienced the much more negative aspects of gambling and what can happen when that feeling becomes an escape that starts to get all too familiar and frequent. This episode is really two parts: the first part has a lighter, more nostalgic tone, looking back on how growing up an hour from Atlantic City was a big part of their childhood, and how a portion of the beginning of their relationship was rooted in the more glamorous side of casinos and spending money. The second part delves more deeply into the serious side of when gambling becomes an addiction rather than a once-in-a-while activity. The financial ramifications, mistrust, and spiraling out of control are just a few of the harsh realities they were forced to ultimately face and deal with. How did they deal with it? What were the next steps? Listen to the episode to find out how this regular couple dealt with critical circumstances. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, there is absolutely no shame in getting help.
