Chris & Kelsey watch some pretty bad Halloween movies, unfortunately. There is yelling. The Classic Film: Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) "Six years after Michael Myers last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd, who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans” (IMDb.com). It happened. We've been mostly forgiving of the Halloween sequels, but 6—with its magic runes and nonsense plot—is absolutely the worst. The Modern Film: Halloween Ends (2022) "The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to a spine-chilling climax in this final installment of this trilogy” (IMDb.com). Despite giving us something we didn't know we needed (a smiling Laurie Strode), Halloween Ends decides to cap off the entire series by being mostly about some brand new character you don't like killing a bunch of other people you don't like. Chris & Kelsey talk to strangers... and dead kids! The Classic Film: Kiss the Girls (1997) "Police hunting for a serial kidnapper are helped when a victim manages to escape for the first time” (IMDb.com). Despite its status as the first film appearance of Doctor/Detective Alex Cross, Kiss the Girls is still just one of a slew of mediocre, serial-killer thrillers churned out by the 90s. The Modern Film: The Black Phone (2021) "After being abducted and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims” (IMDb.com). A recent critical darling of the genre, Joe Hill and Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone is pretty compelling... if a tad overrated. Chris & Kelsey celebrate their graduation by spending the night in a furniture warehouse with a killer! SHOCKING FINAL ACT TWIST: They killed another kid when they were eight! The Classic Film: Hide and Go Shriek (1988) "A group of teenagers spend the night in a furniture store for a graduation party. A psycho killer starts hunting them down one by one” (IMDb.com). An otherwise straightforward 80s slasher with some fun variations, Hide and Go Shriek's sketchy social mores are really where it lets you down. The Modern Film: Dead in 3 Days [In 3 Tagen bist du tot] (2006) "A peaceful mountain lake community is terrorized when a close-knit group of friends becomes the target of a mysterious deranged killer” (Vudu.com). The filmmakers here knew how to make a movie and knew what elements horror movies had, but they really didn't know how to put them all together, leaving the audience generally bored in spite of everything going on. Chris & Kelsey are thankful for two more movies that are only tangentially related to the holiday. The Classic Film: Blood Rage (1987), aka Slasher, aka Nightmare at Shadow Woods "A boy kills a man and accuses his twin brother of the murder, and the innocent brother ends up institutionalized while his psychotic twin goes free. 10 years later, the innocent twin escapes, which triggers his brother into killing again” (IMDb.com). This overlooked gem from the slasher boom era of the 80s has more to offer than you might assume at first glance. Creative effects, ridiculous characters, and a killer soundtrack make us wonder why people don't talk about it more often. The Modern Film: Escape Room (2019) "Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive” (IMDb.com). It may be all kinds of dumb, but the more authentic escape room touches and playful camerawork still make this movie pretty fun. Just don't expect anything profound or life-changing. Chris & Kelsey creep deeper into the Alien Franchise with what some refer to as the best installment. Chris is not one of those people. The Classic Film: Aliens (1986) “Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team after being in hypersleep for 57 years. The moon that the Nostromo visited has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?” (IMDb.com). I mean, come on, it’s Aliens. You know what’s up. The Modern Film: Alien: Covenant (2017) “The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination and must attempt a harrowing escape” (Twentieth Century Fox). With Prometheus and its place in the Alien timeline winding up a little too bizarre and esoteric for the average Alien fan, it seems Ridley Scott and Fox felt compelled to compromise and bring its sequel closer to general expectations. In doing so, they’ve managed to make a relatively good movie that’s the worst of both worlds. Audio Sources: "Alien: Covenant" produced by Scott Free Productions, et al. “Seeing what human compassion could do to an animal gave me a new awareness that I had never understood before, that human actions directly affect the animals that we coexist with.”Harley Quinn SmithOver the last several episodes, I’ve endeavored to shoulder healthy and thoughtful conversations about what matters most right now — the pandemic, racial injustice, systemic racism, police brutality and food injustice.Today we shift from that somber gear for an interlude of reprieve.Enter entertainment’s ultimate plant-based father-daughter duo: Kevin Smith and Harley Quinn Smith. For the few unfamiliar among us, Kevin is an indie film making legend, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author and early podcast pioneer — a voice I credit as a huge influence on my personal career behind a microphone. In 1994, Kevin burst into prominence with his hyper low-budget comedy Clerks, a film he wrote, directed, co-produced, and filmed in the convenience store where he worked. Premiering at Sundance, it was fêted with the festival’s highest award before going on to become an indie cult classic. In addition to countless appearances in both movies and television, Kevin has created a litany of films, affectionately and collectively referred to by his many rabid fans as the View Askewiverse, a nod to Kevin’s production shingle, View Askew Productions.Returning to his roots (did he ever leave?), Kevin toured his latest film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (featuring names like Chris Hemsworth and Ben Affleck) to roadshow box office success, promoting it with pre-pandemic live events in over 60 cities across North America. An iconic and beloved character amongst indie film fans and comic book nerds, Kevin has always been immediately recognizable and famous for his hockey jerseys, backward hat and well, his weight. But in February of 2018, Kevin had a near-fatal heart attack.A lifestyle change was needed. Desperately. Enter Harley. An actress, animal rights activist and bass player for the bubblegum punk band, The Tenth, Harley suggested —some might say coerced—Kevin to adopt her plant-based ways. Kevin obliged. In short, he dropped 50 pounds and kept the weight off. His blood work normalized. And the rest is history.Together they recently launched Vegan Abattoir—a daddy daughter podcast affair that provides plant-based answers to the vegan-curious questions they get from a meat-eating and dairy-drinking audience. Dare you enter? If so you can catch yours truly in episode 2.Picking up where I left off with Kevin in last year’s barnburner 2.5 hour Vulcan mind meld (RRP #433), Today’s discussion centers primarily on veganism and animal rights. What led Harley to adopt this lifestyle, the way it has transformed her life, and that of her Dad. It’s about the many projects these two have up their sleeve, from restaurants to non-profits, to upcoming films. It’s a peek into the life of a Hollywood family, and the complicated dynamics of the movie biz and stardom — including a touching remembrance of Stan Lee and the story behind Harley landing a Manson girl part in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The gleeful banter between Harley and Kevin is infectious. And while this conversation is light, I promise there is much to be gleaned — especially if you are new to the vegan world or perhaps contemplating a more-plant based approach to your plate and life.I’ve interviewed a lot of people. Few are as skilled as Kevin in the art of conversation. And Harley just made it all so much better. It’s Shark Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey celebrate their nation’s Independence Day by trekking to the beach to become shark food instead of doing the sensible thing and staying indoors at all times! But it’s okay: they’re fighters! The Classic Film: Jaws (1975) "When a [great white] shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it's up to the local [police chief], a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.” (IMDb.com). I mean… it’s Jaws. This is one of Chris’ favorite movies of all time, so watch it for him, won’t you? The Modern Film: The Shallows (2016) “A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills” (Sony Pictures Entertainment). The Shallows is more survival-thriller than the adventure-drama of Jaws, so it avoids becoming just another Spielberg wannabe. Come to this one for the beautiful landscapes and the badass silliness of the scenarios instead of quality storytelling and you may be pleasantly surprised. Get more at podsematary.com! It's a Mother's Day Double Feature on Pod Sematary as Chris and Kelsey watch one of the greatest horror films of all time! ...and it's entirely superfluous remake... The Classic Film: Psycho (1960) "A Phoenix secretary embezzles forty thousand dollars from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother" (IMDb.com). Alfred Hitchcock's horror masterpiece not only helped define his legacy but also the legacy of horror films as quality cinema. The Modern Film: Psycho (1998) "A young female embezzler arrives at the Bates Motel, which has terrible secrets of its own" (IMDb.com). Gus Van Sant's remake may tell you a lot about the unreplicable je ne sais quoi of great filmmaking, but it's a bad look for the director himself. Get more at podsematary.com! CW: Antisemitism, Racism, Mass Shooting The aliens have invaded Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey discuss two films with radically different perspectives during an alien invasion! The Classic Film: They Live (1988) "A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth" (IMDb). Can a fight scene go on TOO long? Can a man be TOO rowdy? Can a Keith be TOO David? The answer to all of these questions is "Hell no." The Modern Film: Signs (2002) "A family living on a farm finds mysterious crop circles in their fields which suggests something more frightening to come" (IMDb). One of Shyamalan's "Good Ones," this movie proves that, in capable hands, a story about a family in mourning can be more compelling than the alien invasion during which it's set. Today on The Speakeasy, we talk to Paul Finn and special guest William Pineapple. Paul started his career in music and movies, producing his first feature film at age 21 for Kevin Smith’s View Askew Productions. While working on the soundtrack for that film, “A Better Place”, he decided to re-focus on a career in the music industry both as an artist, touring with critically acclaimed bands The Kingsbury Manx and Spider Bags as well as working behind the scenes at the legendary Drag City and Merge record labels. During this time, bills were paid by waiting tables. He began working at Acme, a fine dining restaurant in North Carolina, working his way up from busboy to GM. He later pursued craft bartending at the James Beard winning Lantern restaurant in Chapel Hill, NC. He now lives in Austin where he helped open Garage cocktail bar, winners of the 2015 Official Drink of Austin. It's Wish Week on Pod Sematary! Chris and Kelsey take on a couple of movies that teach you to be careful what you wish for! First is the 1997 campy classic, Wishmaster, produced by horror icon Wes Craven! Don't expect another Scream (which came out right before this), but how this hasn't become a bigger late-night staple, we'll never know. Then it's the much-maligned, modern take on the monkey paw fable, 2017's Wish Upon! We struggle to find the words, but it's as uninspired as you've been told. It's the anti-Wishmaster. Thanks to listener Will for the recommendations! Get more at podsematary.com! CW: Queerphobia, Sexual Assault, Rape The Birthday Extravaganza continues on Pod Sematary! To celebrate Kelsey's birthday this week, the birthday-themed movies just keep coming! First up is the forgotten 1981 classic, Bloody Birthday. Three kids are born during an eclipse by an eclipse (it makes sense, I promise) and shit goes downhill from there. This movie is simply balls-to-the-walls, unabashed murder-by-kid. Where were you people on this one? How have we never heard of this?! Then, unfortunately, it's on to 2016's Happy Birthday... a movie that would have been derivative in the 90's and it has aged even worse. It still has promise in the form of music video-style direction, but that just can't make up for the punching-down, edge-lord humor. It's too bad because Steven Tyler was a lot of fun. Plus spoiler talk about Castle Rock episodes 8 ("Past Perfect") and 9 ("Henry Deaver")! Get more at podsematary.com! Audio Sources: "Chasing Amy" produced by Too Askew Prod. Inc. and View Askew Productions "Clueless" produced by Paramount Pictures "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" written by Julie Brown, et al. and performed by Julie Brown "Happy Birthday" produced by Darko Entertainment "Bloody Birthday" produced by Judica Productions "Pet Sematary" written by Dee Dee Ramone & Daniel Rey and performed by The Ramones "The Story of Everest" (Mr. Show with Bob & David S04E04) produced by Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, et al.
I had a great time nerding out with the Mighty Ming Chen! Ming Chen’s road to the Stash all began in 1995 when the college student, video store employee and avid Kevin Smith follower, developed a fan website based on the movie Clerks. Smith, who appreciated Chen’s work, reached out and asked him to create a website for his production company, View Askew Productions. Almost nineteen years later, not only does Chen continue to work on all of Smith’s online projects, but has also ventured into several other areas within the Kevin Smith empire, most recently hosting a weekly podcast called “I Sell Comics” with Michael Zapcic on Smith’s radio network S.I.R.: SModcast Internet Radio. Chen is not only the technical expert for The Stash, but also the perfect person to ask to do the jobs no one else wants to do. He takes it all with a smile, and is happy to be a part of the team. During his free time, Chen does pro bono website work for two non-profit organizations: Street Poets Inc. and The Kenny Gordon Foundation. Chen has been married to his wife Debbie for 12 years and has two children, Lillian and Harrison. https://www.twitch.tv/coralsword http://www.viewaskew.com/ming/ https://www.twitter.com/mingchen37 https://www.instagram.com/mingchen37/ https://www.facebook.com/mingchencbm/ https://www.youtube.com/user/mingchen https://jayandsilentbob.com/ https://www.birdscoffeecompany.com/coffees/legends-of-tabletop-legendary-brew Use Code Legends10 to get 10% off your order Theme music created by Brett Miller http://www.brettmillermusic.net/

Christian’s unique style makes him a much needed artist in the music industry. He describes his style as supraliminal Hip Hop; “supraliminal” meaning beyond the realm of consciousness, to induce a sensation. That is exactly what he does in his music. Noticing a gap between the positive sounds of underground Hip Hop, and it’s more popular mainstream counterpart, he’s always had a vision to bridge the two. His ability to smoothly put positive words to commercially appealing beats make him that bridge between underground and mainstream Hip Hop. Sticking true to his vision he picked the alias “Thaahum” as his artist name which is a cuneiform word meaning intellect. He has done custom songs promoting projects for some mainstream media such as View Askew Productions, Sony Home Entertainment, and National Lampoon’s. Hearing about his positive music mentor and film producer Don Boyer, placed Christian’s song “A Matter of Choice” in his film The Power of Mentorship (2007), starring Bob Proctor and Marie Diamond from the hit movie The Secret. Shortly after the film was released Christian got the idea to put out his own project similar to the Secret and the Power of Mentorship that would be geared for the Hip Hop audience. He thus came up with the Inspiration on Fire mixtape series, in which he describes as “a musical journey in the subconscious mind to unlock ones’ deepest potential.” For the series he interviewed writers with different spiritual backgrounds asking their perspective on personal development. Their answers are then mixed in with songs he wrote on similar topics. The mixtape series will be available soon on inspirationonfire.com Besides emceeing, he’s also a freelance journalist and has his own column, “Keneteph’s Korner,” on film writer/director Kevin Smith’s site, Quickstopentertainment.com.
